  • Should have got 54"

  • Bloody bargain!

  • nice deal!

  • Any way we can go in store and maybe haggle it even cheaper? :P

  • +1

I agree - cant believe how cheap brand name 1080p sets are getting - this is a great deal for 50".

In case anyone missed it, you can get the 54" bigger brother to this TV for $1999, but to pay 25% more ($400) for 8% larger size (4 inches) you must be keen on the additional screen real estate.

    • +2

if you double the diagonal size of a screen, the area of it is multiplied by 4. => i think its more like 20% larger…

      • +1

        16% bigger

        • heh I stand corrected :)

I had a look at Clive Peters website but there is no Wii??

  • great deal, and its a good set to-boot

  • It's a nice price but some people are getting the Panasonic 50G10 for that price, although they did buy a couple of other things.

    • i saw u pay extra for extended warranty. just for your information mate. the good thing that having credit card (gold / platinum), some of them offer free extended warranty for items that you purchase with your credit card. example if the items come with 3 years warranty, the cc also extend with another 3 years. my one has maximum up to 3 years free extended warranty and no annual fee charge on my cc. very good deal, isn't it?

      • this will depend on the credit card company. Most credit cards which offer complimentary extended warantee's require that for you to make a claim, you must pay a certain amount of money.
For citibank, i believe it is "200$" per claim.

With extended warantee's you buy at the store, these don't require that you pay a "claim" fee.

So depending on circumstances, it may be cheaper to get it from the store, or via credit card.

        • citi has $100 per claim, but my nab velocity doesn't charge me for excess

    • 2yrs extended warranty can be had for 129 at jb with a bit of bargaining. maybe lower.

  • How about that Viera 50" 100Hz HD plasma TV TH-P50X14A only $1288

    • Lower resolution though

    • Yeah, there is a very noticable difference between 720p and 1080p screens, and well worth paying the difference.

After having a 1080p Panasonic (the 54") for a week, replacing my old Panasonic 720p screen, I am still surprised every time I watch something how clear and detailed the image is. Almost surreal.

I can also confirm that these Panasonic 1080p units look FANTASTIC as a PC monitor. As well as being hooked up to my home theatre system, my 54" is also connected to my PC as a secondary display (via DVI to HDMI cable) and works very happily at full native resolution of 1920 x 1080.

      • how bad, if it still exists, is the burn-in issue when a plasma is used as a pc monitor?

our first tv was a hd plasma, but i seldomly used the pc on it due to the burn in being pretty obvious. an lg unit if you must know.

got an lcd now mostly because of the burn in problem.

        • I use a panasonic plasma got it back in 2008, I personally find burn-in a real non issue and I use my 50" as 95% of the time as a pc screen, various makers have introduced things such as pixel swapping to reduce burn-in but here's a tip on the house if you play the snow show for a few minutes it will rid the TV of any images, if I ever need to do it and that's rarely I put it on the snow show before I head to bed, my TV will turn itself off after 15mins if a channel isn't tuned in.

      • @systmworks - not necessarily…depends what distance you sit from the TV.

        See this graph - http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.html

Depending on how far you sit from the panel, 1080p content on a HD and Full HD panel will look the same. The closer you get though, the Full HD panel will obviously show better clarity.

Agree with you on the PC side though. My HTPC overscans at 720p via DVI > HDMI (my Panny plasma is 1366 x 768). Bit of a shame but ended up using VGA which looks good anyway.

        • I noticed my Panasonic has the option to turn overscan on and off.

I left it on as it removes the fuzzy lines that sometimes appear at the very edge of DVD's etc.

    • Lower res, no bonus Wii pack either (iirc).

  • +1

Looks a good deal but poor energy rating. Price of electricity is going to go up quite a lot in the next few years.

    • +1

Its true Plasmas do use more power than LCD.

To put it into perspective, a 50" LCD might use a steady 250w per hour. Thats about 4.5c per hour (at 18c/KW) or $49 per year if used 3 hours every day.

These 50" Plasma's use a "typical" 270w per hour but can be lower or as high as around 500w depending on the image displayed (black = less, white = more) so lets round up to an average of 300w per hour.
Thats around 5.5c per hour, or $59 per year if used 3 hours per day.

While $10 per year is a consideration.. its not a huge increase over the cost of LCD.

  • Is this an older panel? I see its not one of the new Plasma Neo panels.

Still, for 50" Full HD its good. Especially where no haggling/price-matching is required to get this price.

    • +1

New panel 12th generation it is their eco panel uses less energy than neo panel but same generation

  • Im happier spending the extra dollars on the more 54" realestate.

    • +2

thats cool but you are paying 25% premium for 15% more screen its up to you if you want to pay it

  • Little issue here: this is S series, worse than G and V series of Vieras ..
I reckon Samsung is going to go hard on their next deal for 50"

  • +1

My aunt bought the V series - considerably more expensive, but much improved video quality. If you get the chance, watch the S, G and V series side by side with some fast moving video content and you'll notice the difference.

And as for the bigger screen costing more (and the "25% premium for 15% more screen") - since when does any reasonable consumer expect to see a perfectly linear relationship between price and product, especially with something like TVs? No doubt the larger the screen size, the lower the yield in production, hence the nonlinear increase in price.

    • +1

The V series has excellent motion interpolation, to me the S & G series look nearly the same and the V is in a league of its own (though not as good as the 650 series Samsung for motion, still, the V has its own perks).

To me, I see these sales as a cheap way for consumers to get their first large flat panel TV at a good price. It's a quality TV, but enthusiasts and those maybe looking for a second or so TV would be considering a bit of an upgrade, something like the V series or any other telly with good motion interpolation.

    • +1

Sure, like most technologies, you get diminishing returns near the upper end of the technology.

I saw a 120 inch Plasma at HN for $70,000… 4 times the screen size, at 35 times the price of a 54" unit. A poor size:price ratio given the same size image/resolution can be achieved with a $2000 projector.

Given the small difference between 25% (extra price) and 15% (extra size) I think both the 50" and 54" are excellent deals depending which item (price or size) is more important to someone.

  • What's worse about it coz I'm keen on getting the
s series 54" but got to find the right place to
    haggle

  • -1

hmmmm plasmas .. sounds really outdated now .. especially after our plasma at work gave up the ghost after 7 yrs of operation and just as many repair call outs.

    • +2

Hell, a Plasma from 2003 lasting that long, I say that's a testament to the quality!

The old units were very touch and go. Reliability, cost and quality were huge problems. Even with a few service calls, to last 7 years isn't bad at all.

These days the failure rate on LCDs and Plasmas will be extremely similar. Outdated? Well, LCD technology has been around longer than Plasma has :) Truth is, you can get good LCDs, you can get good Plasmas, and you can get bad in both.

Right now you'd be hard pressed to find a 54" LCD for $1999, or a 50" LCD with bonus Wii pack for just $1599. In larger sizes, I'd go for a Plasma (and I currently own an LCD), but for smaller sizes (40" and under) I'd stick with an LCD (very general rule of thumb).

  • I have recently gone from a 720p pana plasma, to a 46" sony 1080p…..pana I believe to be a better set. I prefer plasma to LCD

  • I couldnt find this on ClivePeters website.
I went to CP - Bella Vista earlier today and they were not willing to go lower than 1899!

  • update,

i bought one yesterday, bing lee, jb hi-fi, good guys and harvey norman would not price match on this unit. the best they could do was $1999.

i called up clive peeters the salesman advised me that the deal was due to expire in a couple of hours. ordered it over the phone with 4 years additional warranty. was told it would be 10 - 14 days before i would receive it.

  • +1

It's actually $1799 now on their website. Only problem is most stores are out of stock apparently its around a 2 week wait.

  • Did anyone manage to get a screen grab or have a receipt for this offer?

Would love to pick one up for that price.

    Cheers
