DM USB OTG Nano Adapter (USD $0.85/AUD $1.19 Delivered) @ AliExpress

170

This is a small OTG adapter you can use with your USB flash drives and other things. As you can see, it's really small, the adapter actually goes into the USB connector.

You do pay a little bit extra for the form factor, but this is cheapest I've seen so far on this particular product (I've seen cheaper OTG cables from Aliexpress, if anyone is interested in getting something cheaper).

Credit goes to prince22 for the link to the deal with cheaper price.
The seller has 2 diamond rating, was on Aliexpress for 3 years. AliExpress unfortunately do not take PayPal.

Even cheaper one at:

    interesting

  • One thing I should mention is, it might be just my USB connectors, but the adaptor does not go in completely like shown on the page. I prefer it that way (at least even if it breaks, I can use the bits that are sticking out to pull the adaptor out), but that might be something people wouldn't like.

Though, now I think about it, it's possible that I have a fake one. I didn't buy mine from this vendor.

Anyways here's a photo of the OTG in the USB flash drive (it's mine).

Why not search before posting ?

I did, should've done it more thoroughly in hindsight.
This is by far the cheapest price I've seen and searching on AliExpress with OTG adaptor, DM adaptor didn't come up with any deals that were better than this one.

  • Can someone explain what this product does exactly. Is it for transferring files without using a computer to your phone or adding storage from a usb drive to your phone.

    • It's an OTG cable without the 'cable'.

    • +1

The OTG adaptor basically allows you to use USB peripherals with your phone.

      From wikipedia:
USB On-The-Go, often abbreviated to USB OTG or just OTG, is a specification first used in late 2001 that allows USB devices such as digital audio players or mobile phones to act as a host, allowing other USB devices such as USB flash drives, digital cameras, mice or keyboards to be attached to them.

Though, it really depends on the device and what you are trying to connect; drivers, power supply etc etc influences whether the USB periperhal would work. i.e. I can use XBOX 360 controller on my phone but not on my tablet (even though both of them are from Samsung and were on KitKat), because the tablet didn't support the controller. I usually use OTG adaptor for USB flash drive and mouse. It probably is possible to use my portable HDD with the powered USB hub (tablet recognised the USB mass storage), but NTFS formating prevents it from being recognised by the phone or the tablet.

OTG is a bollocks stupid thing.

USB drives and the USB interface does EVERYTHING that OTG can do, plus more.

        OTG uses the USB interface

So, if they just used the USB Port as a USB port, there would never ever be the need for a OTG adaptor.

        • +1

And the phones will be thicker just to fit the full sized USB ports on them.

        • @Oversimplified: I just purchased a tablet that does not have a standard USB plug on it, are you telling me that I can attach a flash drive into it using this adapter? How do you know if your tablet will recognize the adapter? Will it show on the tablet as another storage location? Sounds like a great item if it worked.

        • @My Possum: OTG is a standard format (it's not a propriety stuff, I think) and I think it's supported by the OS (For Android, it gets slightly messy since I think it was introduced like at Jelly Bean and the manufacturers could block it).

          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.app.usbotg…
This is what I found on Play Store.

Yes, at least on mine, it gets recognised as "USB MASS STORAGE" or something like that. You have to format it to exFAT or FAT32 though.

        • @Oversimplified: Thanks, but while waiting I found this app. in google play that tests your equipment to determine if it is supported. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.u…

So after running the diagnostics, the Tab 3 LITE which does NOT support OTG. DAMN!!! going to have to depend on my lappy from now on. lol

        • @My Possum: If you are fine with playing around with your tablet, there are few kernels that you could flash on XDA that claims that they support OTG function.

        • @Oversimplified: that was so cryptic to me… you got to techy for my brain..

few kernels…flash on XDA? might as well be speaking German lol

        • @My Possum: it shouldn't be that hard. If you really want it, just go onto xda. Xda is a forum with developers developing stuff for android like custom rom or kernel and more

        • @Oversimplified:

And the phones will be thicker just to fit the full sized USB ports on them

          UMMMM…. derrrr?

The phone companies can use Micro USB Ports. Oh wait….

And wire them as USB ports, rather than "transforming them" into an OTG port that needs an adaptor.

        • @llama: Here, here is an extract from the introduction on "MicroUSB Specification to the USB 2.0 Specification, Revision 1.01", by USB Implementers Forum, Inc, April 2007.

USB has become a popular interface for exchanging data between cell phone and portable devices. Many of these devices have become so small it is impossible to use standard USB components as defined in the USB 2.0 specification. In addition the durability requirements of the Cell Phone and Portable Devices market exceed the specifications of the current interconnects. Since Cell Phones and other small Portable Devices are the largest market potential for USB, this specification is addressing this very large market while meeting all the requirements for electrical performance within the USB 2.0 specification.

I've bolded the bit for you.

        • @Oversimplified:

Yes, OTG uses absolutely stock-standard USB… MiniUSB or MicroUSB ports, in fact.

Then it wires the standard USB Port in a way so that stock-standard USB devices (that EVERYONE wants to plug in there) will not work. So OTG is electrically proprietary (not "propriety"), despite physically plugging into a standard USB port.

So, to get it to work then we have to buy an adaptor - the adaptor converts a stock-standard USB Port (usually MicroUSB now days) into stock standard USB Port (often full-size USB). Of course, it also adds the one single connection (between pins 4 and 5) that "converts it"
          http://cdn.head-fi.org/5/5e/5e2c04eb_500x1ABLE.png

However, it doesn't work with all phones - some need to be "rooted" and some need special drivers or apps or services running. Of course, it they simply left the STOCK STANDARD USB port as a USB Port, then it would work as one, with no special apps or adaptors required.

        • @Oversimplified:

Well, derrr - and so what?

Do you actually understand that OTG uses a STANDARD USB Port? Mini or Micro, not full size.

I've bolded the bit for you.

          Why?

Q1. Have you actually ever physically SEEN an OTG adaptor in real life?

Q2. That charger cable that you plug into your tablet or phone - you know the "OTG Port"… can you explain to us all why you can plug a standard USB cable in there and connect to the device and charge it?

        • @llama: I probably shouldn't have tried to help someone on something that I don't care enough on. You are probably correct, you sound like you have more knowledge on the field than I do. I thought you were talking about the MicroUSB ports and why they have MicroUSB ports on the phone (the extract is from microUSB specification blah). Clearly, I was under a wrong impression.

        • @Oversimplified:

I thought you were talking about the MicroUSB ports and why they have MicroUSB ports on the phone

I was talking about OTG, and the stupidity of manufacturers wiring the MicroUSB port on he phone in a non-standard way (OTG) so that you need to use a OTG to USB Adaptor, rather than just plugging a standard USD device is there.

that's my point made below. that aliexpress searchs don't always yield the lowest price. I gave aliexpress a good 5 minute search to get the 41cents delivered price but yet couldn't find Battlers 28cent delivered price.

same seller also sells OTG cables for 22cents each

battler, how did you find that?

        • copied text "USB OTG Adapter 2.0" of your 41c item (which has now gone to $5), searched, selected free shipping, sorted by price, waded thru till I saw this guy.
EDIT: weird, not showing up in search now!!

also, your OTG cable link is mini USB, not micro USB

        • @battler: >EDIT: weird, not showing up in search now!!

yeah, that seems to happen as well.

My AliExpress fu is not good enough :(
Dang it. I will edit my post to include your link on the description.

      • No worries :)
Just my extra 2 cent contribution to your good effort…

        • +1

I am seriously curious, how do you guys find such a good deal? My Ali-Fu stops at "OMG cheap stuff at Super Deal, search few things, looks like cheapest".

        • +1

@Oversimplified: aliexpress acts really weird sometimes. e.g. I posted a deal for OTG cables for 34cents each delivered. someone else found them for 7cents delivered. even though I had typed OTG and listed by price (low to high) that 7 cent OTG cable wasn't listed in my search.

when I ever search for stuff (on PC) I pick out a few of the cheapest items and then look at the linked/similar items from other sellers that are listed near the bottom of the product page.

Often they will show up as being cheaper but simply don't show up in the search. despite having the same keywords in the title and being in the same product category, etc, etc.

e.g. my daughter wanted a hello kitty suitcase. did a search and the cheapest appeared to be $105 delivered. Pulled up some of the listings and then clicked on the "similar items" listed at the bottom of the page and found the same suitcase for $75 delivered with a bonus carry-on case.

similarly, if you're looking for multiples of the same item then always adjust the search number of items. but even if individual items seem a tad more expensive than the bulk items then always try inputing the quantity amount and see if that adjusts the price.

e.g. saw 5 pack of micro usb cables for $2.25. however cheapest individual usb cable .50c . however when you add 5 of the 50c cables to the basket the price drops to .40cents each.

also searching and putting something in your basket on a PC and then buying through your phone app is usually cheaper.

TLDR - cheapest items don't always appear in search.
          (1) find cheaper products by looking at similar items/items from other sellers listed in the product pages
          (2) if buying multiples then sometimes individual items bought in bulk (changing the quantity in product page) is cheaper then a "bulk pack"
          (3) buy through your phone app.

        • @altomic: case in point - see above with Battlers cheaper micro OTG adapter that I couldn't find. and still can't in a search.

  • I saw this exact one posted a few days ago for $3-$4 and I really liked the design but it was more than I wanted to spend. This is perfect, thanks OP.

  • Just bought it and went to check the delivery time. I am shocked.

    • +4

the benefit is you get a nice surprise when it arrives after you've forgotten about ordering it a month ago

      • +2

oh yeah, the "what is this package that I've just signed for as I haven't ordered anything in the last month?" feeling

  • Cool idea, never seen this before :)

  • Delivered

  • Thanks. I got 3 @ 83c each. Hope they work with my Lumia 1320.
Hoping to get wireless logitech mice/keyboard to work in Windows 8.1 Mobile.

    • Probably wouldn't work (tested with my Lumia 925, Windows 10 Mobile 10.0.10512.1000). Also, mine didn't fit into the unifying USB dongle, had to use the OTG cable I own.

  • Just got mine, works like my other cables, but afraid I'm going to lose it!
