Second post from me. I had to separate it from Game UK. That post was getting too long. Moderators, I am putting this in a separate post as this is from a separate website. If that is not okay, please let me know and I will merge it into my other post.

  • thanks ragflan, I'm about to get a PS3 so this will come in handy :)

    • +5

No problem man… I can honestly recommend the PS3 as the overall better platform but the Xbox is better for gaming. I got a PS3 way back when MGS 4 was released and it cost me a fortune at $699. Back then, many of my friends had an Xbox 360 but none had a PS3. Online gaming was really lonesome =( haha… Even now, more friends are purchasing an Xbox than a PS3.

There's just something about Xbox gaming that's more awesome. Plus the controller is a man's controller. When you hold the Xbox 360 controller, you automatically feel a little more awesome. PS3 controller I can't even tell if I'm holding it. It's so bloody weightless and extremely plasticky..

But it's a bluetooth controller so the range is unbelievably good. And it's frickin' rechargeable. MICROSOFT!!! STOP BEING GREEDY! Make a rechargeable controller out of the box and for crying out loud, even a PSP has inbuilt WiFi, why can't Xbox? Too greedy. They charge for everything. I'm actually beginning to wonder why I favour Xbox… haha..

Also, the PS3 is way better at multimedia capabilities. It's got the BluRay player, gaming is almost just as good as on the Xbox and it plays more video and audio formats (especially HD formats that Xbox doesn't even detect unless it's WMV HD). Theme-ing is much more easier and mostly free unlike Xbox where I have to pay frickin' 240 MS Points for a damn Celtics theme from NBA Live. It's easier to get your content onto a PS3 hard drive than onto an Xbox one.

Speaking of hard drives, PS3 uses the same as a laptop hard drive, so you can get a 500GB hard drive and swap it over for less than a 100 bucks. Xbox, well xbox owners can proudly say our hard drives are futuristic or something specially awesome because they cost like 3-4 times as much as a hard drive of that capacity should. You know, just how Mac users feel awesome for having a laptop that costs twice as much for the same hardware specs… that kinda pride.

PS3 is already wireless (yeah gaming is better on wired connections, but its just nicer without cables running around or spending like a 100 bucks getting a Microsoft WiFi adapter) and it's got a browser so you can surf around and stuff. It's got the Music Videos application where you watch all the latest music videos for free (streaming with playback controls). And the ABC iView player as well.

But despite so many advantages on PS3 and disadvantages on Xbox, I heart my Xbox 360. I just love the Xbox for gaming… And maybe because of Gears of War. I just use the PS3 as a media player now. A really really expensive multimedia player. Sorry long post…

      • Yeah I definitely agree with you, I picked PS3 due to the overall value as a media server/blu ray player etc. At the moment I am trying to decide if I should go the pre-owned PS3 (to get an old one that is backwards compatible) or just get that new slim version…

What sort of TV do you recommend for consoles? At the moment I am trying to decide on the whole LCD/plasma HD/1080p etc stuff and i'm entirely confused.

        • Get an LCD TV with 100Hz. The 100Hz is better for gaming and HD videos that have a lot of fast moving images. LCD because they consume far lesser energy than Plasmas do but Plasmas show black levels in a richer manner.

I have a Samsung 46" Full HD (1080p) TV that I bought on a really good deal in 2008 from Catchoftheday. Haha. I recommend Samsung. I've never had any problems with it and the settings it includes greatly affect the video and audio quality including HDMI blackness and that sorta stuff so you get great picture quality.

I mean, if you ask me which TV I would buy if I had the money.. Sony Bravia for sure man. Look around Ozbargain, there were a couple of good deals from Big W for Bravias in the last week or so… Make sure you go full HD (1080p). PS3 does an excellent job of playing almost any format you throw at it (except, mostly commonly MKV which is the preferred HD format for downloaded content. But you can use the free 'mkv2vob' software to convert files to PS3 format really quickly.

Get a brand new PS3 dude. They're going for really cheap nowadays. No feeling like owning something you're gonna love for a long time and knowing no one else's grubby hands were all over it before. And plus, if you do decide to go with Sony Bravia, there are many Sony Bravias going with free PS3s. Make sure you look at them…

          • @ragflan: It's only the backwards compatability that I want with the old version, but you're right a shiny new one is hard to pass up!

Great minds think alike I am leaning towards the Sony Bravia at the moment. 50 inch if i get my way :D

            Thanks for your help :)

PS acidburn is a dudette :P

            • @acidburn02: The backwards compatibility is great. Mine has it but you know how many times I used it? A grand total of 0 times. I have a PS2 as well, and it's now in a box and not used since the day I got the PS3. You'll be playing too many new PS3 games to want to play PS2 games.

              WAIT. 50" Sony Bravia?

Ummm… Do you have a spare room for rent?

              • +1

@ragflan: lol i'm using the whole "if we buy the biggest/best/awesomest tv there is now, we won't have to upgrade again for years and years, which will actually SAVE us money" line on my partner.

                • @acidburn02: Then go 52". Sony Bravia Z Series. It's got 200Hz. That'll be good for a really, really long time…

                  • @ragflan: The original "duke" controller for the original xbox was a man's controller. The 360 one is more akin to the "s" (foe sissy;).
As for the better console, games aside, the PS3 is a better deal these days (which is why I held off till now) unless you snaggle the occassional 360 bargain. All of the 360's extras come included in the standard PS3 as well as bluray.

                    • @bargainhunter: Wait hold the phone, 360 has extras? In the box, there's no 'extras'. All the bare minimum necessary. Out of the box, the PS3 is superior in every way to the Xbox. Xbox's edge is the games..

                      • @ragflan: Just got a PS3 and need a bit of advice. Do I just need to install the PS3 media server to stream stuff to the PS3? Also, is there any way to stream iTunes music to the PS3?

                        • +3

@ShortyX: my housemates and I used TVersity (free download) to stream our media to the PS3…

                          • +1

@acidburn02: Yeap acidburn02 is right. TVersity is probably the best choice. Whatever videos are not compatible with PS3, it automatically encodes them on the fly so you can watch them on the PS3.

But there are tons of options for PS3 streaming. You can even do it with Media Center or Windows Media Player.

TVersity is the best option though. Just install it, run the program, make sure the media server is running. Once its running, add your folders and files to the Library.

Once done, make sure Media Server is on in the PS3 options under Network settings.

Once you do that, you can see all your files and folders (Photos, Music, Videos) through a Media Server called TVersity. It'll automatically show on your PS3.

Once your TVersity is setup, you can even stream to Xbox 360, PSP, iPod Touch/iPhone… even other computers can stream stuff off your TVersity media server. If you're stuck, just check their FAQs section. It's more than enough.

                            • @ragflan: If youre on Linux or Mac, then Media Tomb works well too. Im assuming media tomb will work on a mac. It worked on a few linux distributions i tried…

                            • +2

@ragflan: i beg to differ, id say that 'ps3 media server' is much better and just as easy to setup

                              • +1

@dahurldog: I gave PS3 Media Server a try before but at that time, it didn't support any other UPnP devices aside from PS3 like Xbox it does now, and neither did it support live streaming to other computers or iPod touch or PSP. In the last area, Tversity does a better job, since you have an accessible web interface listing of all your files for other computers and iPod Touch.

I just tried the new version, and it's every bit as awesome as Tversity for the PS3. Especially what blitz said below about the rescan part, because Tversity does and so does Windows Media Player…

And to top it off, it's available across the 3 major platforms, Windows/Mac/Linux, so its great for people like me who dualboot between Windows and Linux…

Good call. Thank you to dahurldog and blitz.

                            • +2

@ragflan: ps3mediaserver (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/) walks all over Tversity. It's more stable, easier to use and plays many more file types (e.g. mkv). Plus, no install needed: unzip and go. I started using Tversity and persevered for about a month before switching over to PS3MS. Good forum here:

                              http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/

                              • @blitz: thanks blitz, I might give that a try instead of TVersity

                            • @ragflan: oh, forgot to mention that PS3 media server doesn't need a rescan when you add files, either, so you can just drop them in and go.

                          • +2

                            @acidburn02: +1 for tversity.

                            • @pais: it's so easy to use I set it up for my mum to use :)

          • +2

@ragflan: I took your advice and just went and traded my Wii in for a new 120gb PS3 :D

            • @acidburn02: Im glad. You wont regret it. My ps3 is one of my most beloved possessions. I never once regretted having bought it. Its awesome and im sure you'll love the feeling of taking it out of it packaging for the first time as opposed to opening a preowned one. The feeling makes you all warm and fuzzy inside… Enjoy!

      • Not to start a debate, but I own both systems and would easily recommend the PS3 as a multimedia machine as well as solely for gaming (over the 360). I love Gears of War (1 and 2), but with games like Uncharted, Killzone and MGS.. 360 games don't compare (GoW was bloody short), particularly in regards to graphics.

        • +2

No problem dude. Everyone has their own opinion as to which console is better. Multimedia, hands down PS3 takes it. I think the best option is to have both consoles because there are always gonna be 'exclusive to platform' games.

Gears of War was short, yes, but the online gameplay is unbelievably addictive. Gears of War 2, especially. And the gameplay was really inventive, like the cover and fire concept was awesome and it's used in many new games today. Plus, there are some really good Xbox Arcade games that PS3 misses out on like Trials HD and Shadow Complex. The latter of which is a really awesome game.

There's DLC that PS3 misses out on as well. Like the 2 addon games from GTA 4 (Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and The Damned) were both Xbox exclusive. Forza 3 is Xbox exclusive as well and that is the best racing games to date. So is Fable II, one of the best RPGs of all time. Splinter Cell: Conviction will be Xbox exclusive as well.

On the other hand, Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, God of War III (yet to be released) are exclusive to PS3. But some PS3 games are going to be released for Xbox which I never thought would. The new MGS will be released to Xbox 360 as well as Final Fantasy XIII.

So, I guess in the end, having both consoles is more advantageous than having any either one alone. Anyway, it's all up to the person playing as to which console he/she prefers. I personally enjoy Xbox gaming more. Faster load times and the controller feels right in my hands…

"You know, just how Mac users feel awesome for having a laptop that costs twice as much for the same hardware specs"

        Downvote for cliched urban myth.

        • I like how defensive Mac users get… Relax man. I was joking around. By the way, the part about Xbox users feeling proud about having expensive hard drives is also a joke, just in case you missed that…

        • Downvote for veblen good ;)

          • @pais: Veblen?

            • +1

@ragflan: It essentially means you think something is good because it is priced highly; you're not paying for the value of the product, but rather the status of owning the goods.

    • +1 For the effort put in this post
      well done

      • Thank you thank you…

  • +6

A plus from me; not only because of a good deal, but for the effort the poster put into his post.

    • Thank you thank you…

  • There's a couple of decent Blu Ray specials in the sale as well.

    • the dvd box set of The Mummy movies with board game and book for 15 AUD is not bad either.

      Are Blu Ray region coded?

      • They are. But some players can play all regions apparently. I can't confirm this, but I can confirm the regions stuff.

        • And we're in the same region as the UK for Blu Ray.

So no problems there regardless of your player (so long as it isn't from Asia or the USofA).

          • @[Deactivated]: Anyone know what regions PS3 will play?

            • @acidburn02: What regions of what?

              DVDs, it'll play all.
Games, it'll play all but DLC is only available via certain regions (create a new account in Asia or wherever to bypass).
Regions of bluray are divided into 3. We're region B.

              • @pais: sorry ignore that I misread/didn't see your last comment
                cheers that clarified for me

              • @pais: I was under the impression it only played region 0 or 4 DVDs.

                • @[Deactivated]: I just did a bit more research and everything seems to be saying "region B"… I'll check it out a bit further

                  • +1

@acidburn02: Region B (or 2) is for Blu Rays. As I state above, it's locked to this region.

  • Can vouch for zavvi, the stuff takes a while to arrive but the games/DVD's do arrive and all good. I'm personally not that keen on the games from the initial post but seem good deals regardless. I see X-Men 2 on blu ray is still going verrry cheap. http://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/x-men-2/10032785.html

  • Hey could u help me find a really cheap price of psp? ;) mwah

  • lol too expensive for that price. 199$ or less good price ;)can never get for that price $220 is cheapest i cann get with discount ;(

    • I'll check wait.

      • The latest PSP is 3000 and I doubt you can get it for 199 or below. I got mine for 299 with Resistance UMD like a half-year back haha… You can try getting PSP 1000 or PSP 2000 preowned from Ebay for less than 199, but for PSP 3000, I don't think you can get it at that price unless it's some Boxing day sale or something.

  • good stuff on posting the uk deals !

    • Thank you thank you… I hope of these sites will have an awesome deal on the one game I want for now.. Tales of Vesperia…

  • +1

lol they have lets tap on the wii for $5 !

update - borderlands for the ps3 is soldout ! :(

    • Yeap saw that, and updated.

  • +1

dont forget every item costs £2.35 to post.

lips #1's is going for £15.95 which is about $30, its $60 in shops here.

    • Oh thanks for reminding me about that. I'll include in the post.

    • yeah that surprised me I didn't think to check if the free shipping included overseas orders. I still placed my order though, prices are still cheap enough to make it worth it!

  • WHOA! I just realised Zavvi has the official play and charge kit for 8 pounds. Half price. DAMMIT!! Sold out…

  • +1

Seems a lot of the UK retailers are having big sales. I've also recently purchased from gamestation.co.uk and mymemory.co.uk (360 games) and both orders arrived in about a week (awaiting another order from gamestation for Lips #1 hits and Fable II GOTY).

    • Dammit. Even Gamestation don't have a great deal on Tales of Vesperia. I was hoping it'll be part of the 17 pounds deals. I mean, games that were released way after Tales of Vesperia are having big discounts…

  • +1 for posters effort

but would rather not deal with zavvi as its a shame these guys dont offer pyapal.

This was the only site I used my internet only CC with and it just so happens that same month my CC deatils were illegal used somewhere in the UK….might have been cause of zavvi might not have been but strange CC fraud occured after zavvi transaction and in UK.

    • Thanks man. Yeah, I prefer using Paypal any chance I get rather than a credit card… but I'm a student and I only get like 400 bucks on my credit allowance and it's usually maxed haha..

  • How long does this place take to deliver to aus?

    • Most comments suggest in 2 weeks.

    • bout 1.5 - 2 weeks from dispatched date

    • Yep, I ordered Batman Arkham Asylum for like $35 AUD a few weeks ago — it took 19 days to arrive :/ Worth it if you don't mind the wait… In fact, haven't even had a chance to crack into it yet :)

  • quality informative post, I'm not even into gaming but straightaway I can see this is a bargain. Had to chuckle when I read the guys first comment too, it was longer than his original post…

    • haha thank you thank you…

  • A +1 for good info and such a thorough post!

    • Thank you, Blitz!

  • So I want to get a product but when I add it to basket it says "Temporarily out of stock | This item will be dispatched as soon as it arrives" Should I still order it? I don't want to endure months of waiting…but it's so cheap

  • The price is in UK pounds.. So, do the Wii games works on Australia console…

  • +1 To ragflan, for posting above and beyond the call of duty. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

    • +1

      No problem dude… Thank you

  • -3

Why link to games that are sold out?
You initially forget to add the postage charges aswell.

    • The postage, my bad. But ease up man. It's only my second post. And even if you factor in the postage of 2.45 pounds, you still save more than 50% than buying from the 3 local stores I listed.

And the games weren't sold out when I linked to them like 14 hours back.

      • +1

sorry ragflan i accidently - you instead of the comment above. how do i get it off!!?!?! argh

        • +1

I dont know haha, im still new to the rating thing.. I dont even know how to check who gave me a '+' or a '-'.

          • @ragflan: there, a vote on this post should even out my karma :P

    • Clearly they weren't sold out 17 hours ago when this was posted.

Postage was also clarified a while back.

ragflan did an excellent job with this post, and deserves his +1's.

      • Thank you, acidburn02…

  • Nice post. I missed Borderlands which was about the only thing I was interested in.

    • Moondog, yup that's disappointing… Borderlands was sold out pretty quick and neither Gamestation nor Game UK have that price..

    • Strangely enough, it didn't sell out for Xbox 360. I thought it would sell out for all platforms at that price…

    • If you really wanna get Borderlands, don't bother getting it from either Gamestation or Game UK. Game AU has it in stock for PS3 at $69 delivered (http://www.game.com.au/borderlands/playstation-3/1252PS3). That's 10 bucks cheaper than Ebgames which is at $79 and 20 bucks cheaper than JBHifi which is at $89.

    • Moondog, http://www.thehut.com/games/platforms/ps3/borderlands/100481… (The Hut has it as well. But it's not sold out, just out of stock. You may wanna bookmark that link and check back now and then to see if they have stock as opposed to just placing the order and waiting forever). They have it for 17.73 pounds.

Just ordered PS3 Red Faction Guerrilla for around AU$22 inc postage…Can't find it anything closer to that price except GAME sale few months ago at $34…Guess still a good deal at that price.

  • I updated the post about a Bluetooth headset. The official bluetooth headset for PS3 costs between 70-80 bucks locally. $74 at JBHifi. $79.95 at Ebgames. And $79.95 at Game AU.

Zavvi has the Modern Warfare 2 edition of the PS3 Bluetooth headset for only $31 bucks (Delivery included). That's half price as well and since it's bluetooth, you can use it with mobile phones as well. I know you can get cheap headset from DealExtreme and Focalprice for 14-20 bucks but for 10 bucks more you get a higher quality product….
