    0.05% ? Wow so generous!

The rates are still 4% below XEs. Pretty bad.

  • +5

you should stop posting here now, no one is interested in your rates that are typically more than 5% spread compared to 28 degrees or citibank cards which a lot of people already have to get cash out

    LOL
I guess there's always some mug who uses this group (even at the airport!), but expect to get hammered posting this up on ozbargain!

Sure there are better ways to withdraw but what about getting cash in advance of a trip?
I'm going to upvote it because it's still higher (EUR 0.6147) than AUSPOST (0.6057, Commbank (0.6004) or AMEX (0.6109).

I gave up searching after that so happy for someone point out somewhere with a better rate for cash in hand in Aus.

any no-name money changer will give you better rates.

Can you throw me any examples?

Not trying to be difficult but genuinely want to know for myself.

I don't want to head in to the city and wander the streets if these guys or auspost can get it to me a few blocks away.

        • +1

Which city do you live in?
I'm in Sydney, and quite a few surburban shopping centres have at least one money change stall. for example, there are two places in strathfield that change USD for about 1-1.5c less than the going exchange rate.

          Kingzac,

Unlike most of the posts above, I understand your point and appreciate your research to demonstrate it. I do not like traveling to a country without at least having a few hunderd dollars on me in the destinations currency and CB+ or 28D does not fill this void.

I am Syd based, my local currency exchanger is Supay:
          http://www.supay.com/rateListAction.do?method=website&langua…

I have always found their rates consistently better that most other money changers, but still not as good as the 2 cards above. I am happy for and encourage others to find other specific examples.

        • @biggweilo:

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I meant just didn't have the time to word it properly.
I'm in Brisbane and like to exchange a few hundred before I go anywhere but don't want to waste the money driving in to the city for the sake of saving a couple of dollars that I'll waste getting there.

Any recommdations if I am Brisbane based?
Im traveling to Greece and want to avoid any issues due to the financial crisis from a month ago
          Thanks

        • @sod: I just got back from a little Greece holiday. No problems paying by card at any major restaurant or shop. There were a number of empty ATMs on the mainland but the islands were fully stocked. Defiantly need to bring a little bit of extra cash if you're spending some time on the mainland.

The link I posted for Supay has a Brisbane office. I don't know where ti is and you may need to call them to work this outand confirm if they have currency you need. They are who I deal with as they have a branch relatively close to me and consistently have the best cash rates in my area, but your results may vary.

The only issue I have ever had with them is that they like giving out big notes by default, you usually need to prompt them a couple of times for their smaller notes.

Alternatively, some smaller booths sometime offer to price match. you may get lucky if you show them the rates on a phone (you may even have luck with Travelex - who knows?).

        • @biggweilo: Have a look I think we are actually beating Supay plus you can get our online rate and pickup at the Brisbane airport.

        • @Travelex: Good advice. I did not realise that you could preorder and pick up at the airport. Do you do this at all airports? (more specifically, Sydney airport?)

        • @biggweilo: All airports. Online rate with airport convenience ;)

        • @Travelex:
          Supay 0.6154 to Travellex 0.6147

Not much of a difference so depends on convenience.

For Brisbane Supay is in Sunnybank and Travellex is everywhere.

I'll have to have a look at smaller places next time I'm in the city to see what they offer. It's not the rate as the cards mentioned but really for people like biggweilo and I who like to have a little in cash before we travel it really isn't as bad as some people make it out to be.

        • @Travelex:
Thx heaps for the heads up

Thanks for the research. We compare ourselves against a number of providers that supply cash every day. We try to be the most competitive when we can.

If anyone finds a better rate for cash on GBP or EUR this week let us know so we can add them to our watch list.

Not value for money. Poor conversion rates.

  • In Greece at the moment (Santorini) using 28 Degrees MC daily everywhere but you do need some euros cash for the odd cash only situation like catching the bus .. :-).. !! Got my euros from Travelex in Oz but their rates do suck when compared to 28 D .. :-( .. !!

Grab some drachma, just in case? :-P

      • Now that we've moved on to rural Greece (the Pelopennese) having cash euros has become much more of an issue. Practically no tavernas take cards. Now I ask myself why would that be….😕 … !!

        • Back to Santorini! Or perhaps Mykonos?
