GoTalk Mobile SIM, Cheap International Calls on Straight Talk Pre-Paid Plan SMS's ($0.125c)

21

Just picked up a GoTalk Mobile SIM card from Crazy Johns. Activated the card on line and began calling overseas. Call Rates are cheap, however there is a reasonable flag fall of $0.30 per call. The international rates are very attractive though. India 2.5c , USA 4c UK 4c South Africa 4c Japan 0.5c, (per minute) all these from a Mobile Phone. The SIM card also comes with a Calling Card if you want to call from a Land Line an it seems like the flag fall rate changes to 0.15c per call. The phone card usage charge is debited to you mobile pre-paid account. Service seems to work OK, checked my account on line and I am being charged the correct rates.

International/Domestic SMS's are also cheaper than most at $0.125c each. Domestic calling rates are 20c per minute.

GoTalk to GoTalk Pre-paid calling the website states as being free and Data is 0.10c per Meg, a little expensive, but not bad for the odd casual use. Credit on the Straight Talk plan lasts 90 days.

I would be curious about the GoTalk to GoTalk being free 24/7 as I have not used this.

PS when you recharge they give you a 20% BONUS credit

    Flag-fall of 30¢ is this offer's downfall.

Based on the cheapest advertised per minute rate on this product of ¼¢ you could talk for 2 hours to these countries for that 30¢ if that flag-fall wasn't there.

    • I agree, but lets get realistic here, you are talking from a mobile service, you cant have everything for nothing. Also the ultra cheap calling rate is only available during their happy hour which is 2.00 to 3.00 am

So, even more restrictive than I first thought.

  • I call to Hong Kong few times everyday on mobile (using calling card) and 0.5c/min looks really attractive for me, but 30c flag fall may just balanced out the saving.
Does anyone know the quality of international call with this?

    • From what I can gather the call quality appears to be as good as any calling card service.

      • Thanks. If the quality is just as good I think it worth a try.

  • You might want to clarify a few prices there:
    $0.125c? 0.15c? 2.5c to India (per minute?)

Seriously though - VoIP thru Pennytel or equivalent is much much better value at 8c untimed. For those who insist on using a mobile phone for international calls, there is PennySIM.

    • I may have missed something in the PennyTel SIM offer,

      a) The credit only last 30 days, GoTalk 90 days, 20% bonu when recharging.

International calling rates at Pennytel SIM are not cheap at all, yes local is cheaper but I would not be looking to GoTalk for cheaper Domestic services.

PennyTel using their Mobile Sim card UK Rate 0.27c flagfall plus 0.432c per minute India 0.27c Flag fall plus $1.476 per min. ??

Am I missing something here or am I on the wrong page at Pennytel

      • Yes, you are missing the point here.

The rates you quote is mobile rates (charged by optus), but people buy pennySIM to get VOIP Rates (via pilot number or smartdial)

        • They are not charged by Optus, they are charged by GoTalk.

    • Updated my comment the rates are per minute

Their international rates also similar - give or take couple cents!

They also used to have bonus when recharge - recharge $15 get $5 , recharge $30 get $15, etc.

    They network is Vodafone.
