no one knows how that works, but if you say so.

  • +12

This will be sold out quick!

    16GB is almost unusable…

    • +1

pretty much, u have to constantly back up photos and videos (like ones sent from messages), delete most games
its bad, wife has a iphone 5, constantly have to transfer things

      • +1

try Google Photos - free, unlimited, uncompressed

        • +4

I don't think it is uncompressed. They only say high resolution, not original.

        • +2

prfer not to have photo's in the cloud!

        • +2

@hashtagbargain: It is uncompressed for photos taken by iPhones, only photos bigger than 10MB (which only comes from DSLR) will be compressed

        • Google compresses ALL photos stored using the free version, INCLUDING those that are under 16Mb.

The documentation says under the list of options for "High quality:

Size: Save high quality photos and videos while reducing size

and then under "Original" (which counts against your quota).

Size: Stores your photos and videos exactly as you captured them.

To further clarify things, it says that photos under 16Mb "will essentially look the same".

        • @GordonR: It's 16 MegaPixels, 10MB, not 16Mb(Megabit). and no, it doesn't compress "non-high quality" photos and vidoes. Look at CNet and the announcement from Google when they published it http://www.cnet.com/au/products/google-photos/

        • +2

          @cloud226:

Yes, I meant megapix not megabits.

However, it is a common misconception that under 16Mp will not be compressed, and this now has a life of its own and is being repeated all over the internet.

          Using the free Google photos

          • any photo below 16 megapixels will be compressed, but the resolution will be retained
          • any photo above 16 megapixels will be downsized (and then compressed)

So in the former case, you might upload, say, a 3264x2448 picture, they it will stay at that resolution, but you won't get the same pixels back.

I don't know what algorithm they use, but if you imagine something like JPG, then that has a "quality" control and if you set quality to 85 instead of 95, then you get a smaller file and if you set it to 75 instead of 95, then even smaller. (Internally, JPG is doing a discrete cosine transform, then rounding off some numbers to integers and then compressing the integers.)

If you look at http://www.siliconbeat.com/2015/05/29/google-photos-sounds-g… then it explains it more carefully than CNET, but here is the relevant part anyway:

"What’s more, no matter what size photos or videos users upload to its free Photos service, Google will generally compress them using “lossy” compression techniques. The company says that at least with photos up to 16 megapixels and videos up to 1080p, most users shouldn’t notice the difference between the compressed files and the originals, at least without zooming in super close. But the fact remains that the company will be discarding some of the data in the pictures and videos and won’t be storing the original file sizes."

        • @GordonR: You are right. It appears Google does compress smaller photos as well now. I can almost be sure it was different when I first started using it - the settings gave different information back then.

    • 500 unit sold in 2 hours in the previous deal. I think that's quick.

    • App thinning in IOS9 improves things a tad. Couple with something like google photos and it could be ok.

    • Photos are automagically compressed and sentenced to the cloud now. My iPhone is tasked to communications and photography - so 16GB is plenty of space for me.

iCloud Photo Library helps you make the most of the space available on your Apple devices by automatically storing the original high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and leaving behind the lightweight versions that are perfectly sized for each device — taking up only as much space as needed.
      http://www.apple.com/au/icloud/photos/

    • I've only ever had 16GB iPhones but I don't go crazy on pics & games. All my photos go straight to iCloud and I have only a handful of games under 100MB each. All I do is text, browse & place calls and I still have ample space.

There's a use for it, just not for a lot of hardcore mobile users.

    • Depends what you want to use it for. Some just use it as a phone with web browsing capabilities, to store a few songs.

If i wanted a phone to use for business purposes this would suit just fine

  • +3

16gb is criminal, but not bad I guess

  • -2

Positive vote - maybe just for the kind mention.

Don't forget to take the loss of local warranty support, out of warranty support, and two year local consumer guarantee, into account when determining any saving over local price.

  • +10

Warning: don't try force touch on this model, you will break your screen :)

    • Yet to break one myself, or any of the 10+ people i know who have one..
I dont use a screen protector or case either.
I guess if you treat it like its worth good money then your less likely to play frisbee with it.

      • It's a gag :D

        • Oh, lol! :)

        • +1

          @tomleonhart: wow, how obscure???!! 😐

    At least 64GB please….T-T

Since this is a grey import, I suppose heading to the local Apple store for any warranty should there be any defects is not possible?

Sorry that I was not clear enough. Of course I meant this comment that was further 'above' than your comment ->

  • +2

Very tempted. Is the 6S worth an extra $400? Hmm

  • +3

You just negged the other group deal and now posted a deal yourself..

    • I negged because the deal wasn't active. Old ozbargain guidelines stated that inactive deal can not be posted. That has changed so i revoked the neg.

  • +3

Estimated delivery between Monday, Nov. 2 and Friday, Nov. 13. Eh

    • +3

what the hell, thats 2 month waiting time, I contacted Kogan to cancel my order, thanks for pointing that out, I didnt even notice

    • +3

Far out. Might wanna add that to the description OP

      Edit- thanks for the update

  • +1

So how much am I saving by buying from Kogan, waiting for 2 month, lose out on GST claim and local warranty from Apple?

    • I bought this deal last time and did not wait 2 months. 3 weeks at most and I am in Sydney.

  • +3

should be less than this, it was less months ago even before the 6s was released.

  • +1

Any good deals for 6 plus please ..

    • -1

  • +3

Better IMO - Buy from David Jones - price match if haven't updated. Use 10% off egift cards, claim TRS ~$750 AUD for local stock and warranty

    • But claim GST bit is not always an option for everyone.

    • to claim GST you need to have an international ticket. So if you are not going anywhere then…

    • Sorry but what IMO means please? How does it work with price match as this is an online and I thought shop will not do price match with online catalog?
Could you please clarify? Many thanks.

      • +1

        IMO = in my opinion
showing they acknowledge it is just their opinion
Also seen around lately is TBH = to be honest

  • What's in the box:

    Apple iPhone 6
    Apple EarPod Headphones
    Lightning Cable
    Charger
    AU/NZ Compliant Generic Charger
    AU/NZ Compliant Generic Adapter

  • TBH the outright phone prices are much cheaper than what the telcos are offering on a plan. My 24 months plan expired earlier this month and all the iPhone 6 plans cost around $1,000 for the phone. They used to be a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than the outright price.

    • Can you help to calculate? I am only seeing Telco offerings are cheaper than outright price.

      • +1

How about you find me a 16G iPhone 6 that is cheaper than $689 from Telstra/Vondafone/Optus?

        • Oh 16GB ones.

I thought the brand new iPhone 6S ones…..

          Definitely 689 is cheap.

  • +3

16GB is useless as system itself takes few GBs

    • +1

yeah add a few games, facebook, email and whatsapp and its game over!

    • +1

iOS 9 has new feature called app thining. System file takes less than 2 GB and some apps are adapted to take advantage of this. I'm using iPhone 5s 16gb at the time and dont feel it is not enough. Lot of photos and videos, but not a gamer fan.

    • +3

I've got a 16gb iPhone. I have 600 photos 30 vids. 50 apps including lasoo and FB what's app messenger for FB and a few large games and I still got 2gb free space. It's not as bad as it's being touted.

  • I thought Apple now has worldwide warranty

    • +1

I thought Apple now has worldwide warranty

Always have had, on all other than iPhones and iPads with cellular capability.

Some owners have reported getting warranty support in Australia for UK and HK sourced iPhones.

  • Don't forget to take the loss of local warranty support, out of warranty support, and two year local consumer guarantee, into account when determining any saving over local price in Australia.

  • +1

I'm pretty sure its 1 year warranty on grey iphones and 2 for aus stock through apple.

    • I'm pretty sure its 1 year warranty on grey iphones and 2 for aus stock through apple.

      To be clear.

The iPhone that buyers will receive may, or may not, be grey imports into Hong Kong. That is, you may receive a HK market model. However, there is a chance that the phone you receive may have been first sold in a different market/country.

All these iPhones will be private imports into Australia as far as Australian Customs and Australian Consumer Legislation are concerned.

The Apple One Year Warranty on iPhones is valid in the country/market of first sale. This MAY have been Hong Kong, but could also well be another country/market.

There is no two year warranty on Australian Market iPhones. It is a one year warranty. There is also at least a two year consumer guarantee under Australian legislation. I have experienced Apple replacing a MacBook logic board free of any charge in its third year under the Australian Consumer Guarantee.

  • -4

If you read the news, 6s and 6s+ is not pre-selling well in China and Hong Kong, that's why Kogan can get the stocks to rip you off.

  • Not bad deal but 16gb is really rough with the massive camera quality.. i had like 6 gb worth of music as is.. so doesn't leave much for anything else…
Btw, you get global warranty for apple products for 1 year. Which is pretty standard.

Would you please supply a link to this new information? Perhaps I need to clear my cache as I don't see this. Also, Apple Australia and their regional headquarters in Singapore do not say this as recently as last month.

      EDIT:
I just cleared cache and checked again.

      USA Market Sales ->
IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.
Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.

  • Anyone had their's ship yet?

  • +1

    Just shipped today

  • Mine's 'In Transit to Destination'!

The shipping estimates from Kogan (Mon. 2 Nov. and Fri. 13 Nov) were very inaccurate.

I should receive my iPhone 6 later this week or early next week.

Great bargain and well worth the $689 for this model! :-)

  • +1

    Just delivered.
    Model: A1586
    Part: MG472LL/A

    • Got mine yesterday! LOVE IT!!!!

    • Just delivered.
      Model: A1586
      Part: MG472LL/A

      So, a USA Market Model.
      Probably first sold/supplied by SPRINT.
Then re-sold to Kogan HK Limited.
      Then sold to you.
      Was the box still sealed?

      • Yes still sealed box. Added it to my Apple Support profile and comes up with repairs and service coverage active from today till 23rd Sept 2016 which I see as a good thing. Last import I bought from another seller I couldn't even add to my support profile as was registered to someone else.

Does not mean that the warranty will be fully supported by Apple Australia. Just means that the warranty is valid.

        • @A3Australia: Does it really matter who provides the warranty? There's a warranty. Be happy!

        • @muncan:

Does it really matter who provides the warranty?

          Of course it matters.

If the buyer is living in Australia, and the warranty is valid in the USA.

          There's a warranty.

Not for mine. The One Year warranty, that was only valid in the USA, has expired.

        • @A3Australia: I trust you have the ACCC on speed dial?

          WARRANTY:
This product is BRAND NEW and comes with a 12 month Australia wide warranty. In the unlikely event that you require a warranty repair, we will collect your item, repair or replace it, then return it you at no charge. It is a requirement of warranty that you keep the original packaging for transportation.

        • @muncan:

I trust you have the ACCC on speed dial?

I fail to see how the Australian CCC can assist with an American Market device, first sold by an American carrier to some 'middle man'' then sold to a Hong Kong company, before being purchased and privately imported by me from the Hong Kong business.

My iP5s was first sold by AT&T. I thought that I was buying a Hong Kong market model as Kogan HK did not make it clear that they were selling models from the USA. At the time their 5c phones were mostly HK market models. However, almost all their 5s phones were from USA carriers. Some of these were new and sealed, some were unsealed, and some had been used (activated).

I knew the risks I was taking in privately importing a phone from an overseas seller. So far the risk has been worth the saving I made. I know that this phone will bring less than an Australian Market 5s when I finally sell it - hopefully the difference will be less than the saving I made on the purchase.

        • @A3Australia: I sold my Kogan USA iPhone 5S with a $10 profit on eBay when upgrading to the iPhone 6. Timing is everything.

        • @muncan:

          Timing is everything.

Yes. That is what I should have done. Instead I purchased a iP6 for my son at that time.
