I was looking at the specs going hrm, 1080p instead of 720p, that's weird!

And then went whoa at the 4500mAh capacity…

Then I saw it was the tablet, not the phone.

    • +5

yeh , it is easy to get confused as they all look alike with the omnibalance design of Sony

given that , Z3 compact phone (OZ stock ) at this price would be awesome !!

  • +1

I have this tablet, it's quite good. Battery life is nice and the size is great to use.

    Waterproofing is a significant bonus.

    • How big is the screen? doesn't tell me on the specs page on Telstra or Sony.
Update: never mine found it. 8"

      • +4

        never yours?

    • +1

Perfect to use in a bathtub? :)

    • I have this tablet and I like it. But I wouldn't count on waterproofing much. Sony xperias have a bad reputation for failing at this

  • +1

Z2 has been available at this price a couple of times recently, if your after a bigger screen (though still very light and micro slim) then that may be the go.

  • I owned one I paid $640 for from JB. It lasted 2 months before the screen cracked while in pocket for no explainable reason, as the digitizer is part of the glass this leaves the phone useless. I was unable to claim warranty and had it repaired. But it was never the same (darker screen contrast and no IP rating). Check out the Whirlpool forums it is full of peeps with the same issue with no support from Sony. My 2 cents…. While is is a fantastic phone. It was not worth the heartbreak and the money lost.

    • +2

warranty and support from sony sucksssssssss, those extra s don't come for nothing.

with that kinda price i would rather go for the ipad mini retina, although i am a solid android user.

      my 1 cents.

      • +1

Sony support is garbage, I won't buy another thing for them!

    • +11

This is not a phone. It's a tablet

    • +23

You put an 8" tablet in your pocket?

    • -1

The screen cracking issue is a widespread issue across all Xperia devices since (at least) the Z1.

Clearly Sony do not care that they're selling devices that break too easily.

There is an additional potentially much worse screen issue that causes touches to occur (usually referred to as "phantom input" or "phantom touches") that also affects all Xperia devices since (at least) the Z1 and at least to the recent Xperia M. Sony went for 3 generations knowing about it and not fixing it.

      Noticing a pattern here?

I recommend against buying all Sony Mobile devices for these reasons.

    • +1

This is a good point. However, I think the problem is a lot more prevalent in the z3. I have the z2 and its fine. Theres just a lot of reports of this problem with the z3 for some reason

  • what is this led ips screen, its just a lcd right not oled screen?

    • -3

Not OLED. No phone or tablet is OLED currently.

IPS stands for In-Plane Switching, an LCD tech.

      • +1

OLED displays have been used in phones since 2008…

        • -2

I stand corrected. My Note 3 is AMOLED in the first place.

        • +1

@JaxSantiago: Yeah uh so was my Note 1. And most of Samsungs devices since 2008 or 9.

      • Galaxy Tab S (tablet) mate… uses AMOLED.

        and I"m loving it :D

…ALso the Galaxy S line (phone) has been using AMOLED since 2010 :D

    • IPS screens are also very good. Anyone with a good PC monitor can attest to that.

  • -3

for this price you can get galaxy tab s or pro and the spec will beat the hell

    • Nope, not really. Tab S and Tab Pro uses similar SoC (Samsung used 5420 along with Snapdragon 800 in Note 3) if not worse, since Snapdragon 801 is more or less considered a overclocked version of Snapdragon 800 by many people.

QHD might be plus for some people, I personally found it to cause too much performance issues. I frankly think QHD do not go well with Snapdragon 800 or Exynos 5420. It does show when you play games and such (I've rooted my Tab Pro just to have ability to change the resolution).

      • I found my Tab S a little jerky. My Z2 Tablet, which is just a bigger version of this Z3 tablet, was much smoother.

        • You do need fair bit of tweaking for it to run nicely. Magazine UX launcher feels very resource hungry and so does the QHD.
I think even without rooting, you could free up fair bit of RAM, just by changing the launcher.
Doing few tweaks with animation speed on developer option does make it feel more responsive as well.

I used to use debloater, that thing's amazing. That thing made my tablet feel very responsive and it didn't even require rooting.

Though I don't deny that the tablet does have a too high resolution screen for its hardware.

        • @Oversimplified:
          I've got a Nexus 10 with a 2560 x 1600 pixels screen, Chipse exynos 5250 , CPU Dual-core 1.7 GHz Cortex-A15 and a GPU Mali-T604. It's Samsung made and flies along.

        • @terrys: Eh, everyone knows that Samsung bloats their products (I think their software team is just god awful). That said, I am not sure whether you and I have similar definition on what's responsive and what's not. I've never used a nexus 10 before.

The comparison I could find on the youtube was just citing the difference in spec (I thought it was pretty stupid because it completely ignored the fact that 5250 has very high TDP for an ARM SoC).

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZvQtEeDauc

Stock Android doesn't have as much functions as TouchWiz does, so I think it's slightly hard to compare. I know everyone would go, they are all bloats, but there are some useful features in there like Multi-Screen and SideSync (and I tend to disable any that I don't use). Mine runs fine with generic usages after changing the launcher to Nova Launcher. It starts dying with games like Star Wars: KOTOR hence why I think the resolution is too high for the SoC.

5420 was comparable to Snapdragon 800, it shouldn't have any problems with games. I am hoping that ART will alleviate that (Samsung blocked ART developer option on KitKat, so I've never tried ART on my device).

        • @Oversimplified:
Yep - the 10 was 2012 lol, but being for Google, missed out on the Touchwiz. I'm sure you can imagine my tears and feel my pain. Without the NBN tho, I'm a bit stuck for media.
The high res seems a bit pointless on a 10" screen, but seems to make a difference when reading texts, so maybe it's only use is for Grandads like me to read the paper. Wanting 2560 X 1600 to play games on a small screen - that's just spec porn.
The Xperia Z phone runs fine with a Hi res screen, but it doesn't have quite as far for the little imps inside it to throw the pixels…

        • @terrys: I think tablet running that kind of resolution is only good for movies and ebook reading. I had to reduce resolution by rooting for games. That said, I personally think the problem is more of Snapdragon 800 and Exynos 5420 is not good enough for QHD to perform like a flagship tablet, Tab Pro would've been so much better with FHD screen, in terms of performance.

  • I bought this on eBay two nights ago, after requesting Telstra eBay put it on their eBay store (it was in the Bourke Street Melbourne store for $399 also). Total out of pocket expense for me was $305, after all discounts and cashback.

    • 305???

      • after all discounts and cashback

I got a special offer on the purchase (you can see it in the item purchase history link), in addition to using a $50 voucher earned on a previous promo, then cashrewards.com.au

I didn't post it because the average person can't get it. Plus the $399 has been available for a while, as mentioned above.

        • +2

Hiya, any tip on how I can mutate myself to be a non-average person (to get the Special Offer price? :)

        • I'm curious as well about how you could get a "special offer" on a Tablet purchased from their ebay store?

        • @DonIsGood:

Try the following link and if you can see the offer, then it "might" work (for 5% off) but the original offer page is gone and you also might need to wait for the email confirming you will get the offer.. Though I don't see how the email will trigger.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/sme/telstra/Extra-5-off-when-you-spen…

here's a pic of what it will look like, if it works:
          http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/77537/33548/xz3tc.png

Look at the price on the right hand side, before saying that it excludes tablets, I'm already aware of that exclusion & it still worked for me

        • @robertm:

          Pls see above

        • +1

          @nismo: Thanks Nismo ;)

        • @DonIsGood:

Did it work for you DonIsGood ?

How's the GoGGomobil these days? ;)

    • Answered ^^

  • Does this have the back/screen glass shattering issues like the other Sony phones?

    • Been answered above https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211535#comment-3053235

Yes, if you keep it in your pocket

      • I would carry my tablet around, so it would most likely get cracked then. Damn.

        • He was talking about a phone. The tablet isn't known for cracking, like the phones.

  • +1

    No 4Gee for 399???

  • -2

Does it come with automatic glass cracking?

  • +1

The glass cracking problem is bogus.

If you drop it from head height onto a concrete floor, or even from a car doing 100km/h, yes it will have "cracking problems."

    • -3

It's a widely reported issue and every single report seemingly mentions it's in someone pocket. Sony are selling poorly designed hardware and have been since at least the Z1. You seem to be in denial.

      • +3

you seem to believe everything you read. Widely reported by who? You mean by idiot clickbait journalists? "Most people" watch Kim Kardashian - does that make that a smart choice?

I've owned Z1 and Z3 and tablets. No issues.

Also had iPhones, didn't have "bendgate" either.

I guess i didn't read about the problems I am supposed to have enough.

Do you know what "clickbait" is? It knows you.

        • +1

          Same, no issues here..

Had a Z and two Z2's, 3 friends with Z3's and one with a Z3C that haven't cracked (without them actually damaging it)

        • +1

          @XeKToReX: Same here, my Z3 and Z Ultra didn't crack. My friend's Z2 didn't crack, and his Z3 hasn't cracked yet.

  • +1

How is this a deal? It's just a WiFi tablet right?
You can get the Samsung Tab S for this price on a good day.

    • I frankly think Tab S has a processor that cannot handle the QHD properly.
I own Tab Pro (Same processor, 2GB RAM) and used Tab S for a bit when my dad wanted one (and I bought it before I left the country).
FHD probably would give you better experience.

If you have a PS3/4 you can set up remote play and play your games on the tablet anywhere with a PS3/4 controller (as long as you have fast internet connection). This is why I love my Z2 tablet. Whilst others are playing Candy Crush on their tablets, I'm playing GTA V on mine.

    • Does it run smooth on the Z2 tablet?
I think the 8" would be too small, would prefer the 10" for remote PS4 play.

      • It really depends on your internet connection speed. When it works, it runs flawlessly. My Z2 is on the Telstra network and plays my PS3/4 games perfectly 90% of the time, the lag is almost unnoticeable.

        • Wow, for PS3 too? I thought the stream play (or whatever it is called), only works best on ps4? Also, is it only working on specific game? Or could be anything, such as diablo 3?

        • @televisi:

Remote Play works on PS3 too, and yep it's only game specific. Most AAA titles are already supported, not sure about D3 but it's very likely supported too.

        • Thanks. Will wait for the Z2 sale then :)

        • +1

@Erkel: Remote Play works on PS3 too.
How did you get the PS4 remote play app to connect to the PS3 when the app only searches for a PS4.
I don't think your tested PS3 remote play. With CFW PS3 and a PS Vita you can remote play any game.
