Hopefully this means the $1 telstra $30 packs are in the following weeks

    • +8

      Too right. Fingers crossed.

    • Exactly my thoughts as well. Can't wait for $1/free Telstra $30 starter packs to show up again…

      • So many hearthstone cards :)

    • It didn't show up :(

  • +3

    Nice one TA.
Pretty decent inclusions for $5. Unlimited calls/texts, 1.5GB data and a little extra credit for extras like overseas calls etc 30 day month as opposed to the annoying 28 day thing some are doing now.
    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/Pre-Paid/plans
    Not bad at all.

  • +1

Can you send activate them and send the credit to your main number?

    • +1

No, the credit is tied to the sim.

      • OK, thanks for the reply.

  • +7

The process for the $1 Telstra packs at Woolies last time was to scan your EDR rewards card when buying $30 groceries. There was then a statement at the bottom stating you were eligible for the cheap starter kit. When purchasing the starter kit afterwards, scanning your EDR dropped the price.

Pro tip: there are temporary EDR cards at the front of the store amongst Woolies flyers. You can split your weekly grocery shop in to $30 transactions and scan a different EDR card each time. This is because each EDR card is only eligible for a single discounted starter kit.

    • +1

i knew there was a reason i got one for my wife and son (and stored them all in stocard)

    • Thanks for the info. So you don't purchase the sim card in the same transaction as the groceries? And if not does it have to be purchased on the same day at the same store?

      • Different transactions. It can be different stores and different days.

      • The cheap pack entitlement is linked to the EDR card so doesn't have to be done at the same store or immediately after the qualifying purchase.

    • You can only use this reward with registered everyday rewards cards, so paper cards will not work. @sween64 could you please edit your post to reflect this!

      • Have you tried boxoid? Last time it worked with paper EDR. Oh and comments can't be edited once they've been replied to.

    Any Bargain??? (Sarcasm)

  • +1

Can you use these credits for the Google Play Store, like Telstra's?

    • Nope. Only available on post paid accounts.
      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/apps/Google-Play-Store-B…
"Terms of use for Google Play Store Billing
As an Optus post-paid mobile customer with an Android device, you can choose to buy non-Optus products ("content") from Google Play using your Optus post-paid mobile account"

  • Any advantages/tricks with using optus versus telstra? Is it worth stocking up?

    • If you stock up on Telstra and optus starter kits when they're cheap, port between each one when it expires.

The $30 prepaid plan on optus has better value than the Telstra one.

      • As far as call and data allowances are concerned. Telstra has a better network overall but YMMV depending on your common usage locations.

        • Only if you live in the middle of the desert. I live in a city and Optus 4G+ is incredibly fast and has good coverage.

      • yes, i'm very familar with Telstra and have over a dozen sim cards up my sleeve.

Just seeing if Optus has any benefits. In what way is it better value?

        • Be careful, there's an expiry date to activating them…

        • +2

The $30 Optus monthly plus prepaid plan vs the $30 freedom plus plan with Telstra:

Unlimited national calls vs $250 national calls

          1.5gb data vs 1.3gb

Includes $5 extras credit for international calls/text, premium service, roaming

          30 day expiry vs 28

        • @neos:

Agree on all except ”$250 national calls”. The $250 includes international calls as well. So might be for someone considering better network, don't make lots of calls but do make quite a bit of international calls.

        • @wildstone: oh yep my bad

        • @neos: Telstra has Unlimited Text and Telstra Numbers + $30 Google Play Credit

        • @ccwwayne: Wait so the $30 credit can also be used on Google Play Store? I thought on the freedom plus the $30 credit is used to purchase the the plan with the 1.3gb data, $250 national calls, etc.

So does this also mean if you use up the $250 call credit, you have a further $30?

        • @neos:

          Yep!

  • Can you port your existing mobile number to optus using the starter kit ?

  • Is this SIM activate as Mobile Broadband $30 Starter Kit

    • @ koakun

      No.

      (wish it did)

      • +1

        Thank you ,snappy1234

    • I mean it shouldn't be a problem using it with your mobile broadband modem, which is restricted by Vodafone, but you can use it anyway.

      • No problem using this sim in your mobile broadband modem. I've had three so far (from previous offers) and will stock up again to do just that. 1.5GB for $5, too easy!

$30/4Gb Mobile Broadband starter kit for $5 would be insanely awesome, but 1.5Gb is good enough.

        • +1

I activated this sim as $2 daily plan which include 500MB of data.
This sim include $30 of credit , so you can get 500MB*15=7.5GB .
          better than 1.5GB?

        • @koakun: Yep, more data but less time. I only use a bit over 1GB on my mobile wifi device each month so the My Prepaid Monthly works better for me than the 15 days of My Prepaid Daily.

  • Are you able to buy a $30 giftcard?

  • Now that the catalogue is out it says "Limit 1 per customer for $30 SIM EDR Promotion. You must scan your registered Everyday Rewards card at the time of purchase. Limited to registered Everyday Rewards members. Must be redeemed by the 1st of October. The offer will be automatically linked to your Everyday Rewards account.".

Would that mean in total or 1 per shopping trip?

      sween64 said this above:

Pro tip indeed. You Ozbargainers are somethin' else!

        • We've made cheapskates a cool thing! :)

      • Your pro tip is null and void as the cards need to be registered to get this offer. The only way to do that would be to register each on your phone at the register as you wait.

        • Yeah, this is what happened to me. Asked the service desk if I could use a paper card and she said it was only available to registered cards.

        • @Nomic:

Did you try a paper card at self checkout?

        • @sween64:

Yeah I recall reading this has to be done via self-checkout.

Never tried myself so only going off memory

        • +1

@sween64: Nope - grabbed a temp one, registered at home, came back and did the deal. You get a little notification on the receipt that the deal is available. You take the receipt and your card up to the service desk and then you're done. This time around she actually signed the receipt which seems a little nugatory if they're tracking it all through the EDR card.

        • @Nomic:

Was there a lag between registration and activation? Do you get a notification regarding activation?

        • +1

@sween64: Registration / activation of the EDR card was immediate so you could do it on your phone while wandering around the store I guess.

  • Can you transfer the Optus credit to an existing Optus prepaid? Thank you

    • I want to know this as well. Can someone enlighten us?

      • Nope - it's a new sim that you can activate either on the My Prepaid Monthly Plus, My Prepaid Daily or My Prepaid Daily Plus plans.

  • +2

I must say the online Optus activation process is a dream. You even get to choose a number out of a dozen options.

    • You can keep trying for a better number, for as long as your patience holds out.

      1. Enter you SIM number; [next]
      2. select a title (MR, MRS, etc), enter a single letter in first and last name, enter DOB, check the privacy policy checkbox,
enter street number and street name, then either wait a moment for the suggestion box to pop up with the complete address, or enter the rest of your addy; [next]
      3. if you don't like any of the 8 phone number options, refresh the page and repeat process.
if you like one of the number options, then click [change] up at your details and fill in properly.
      • I'm using my free $10 kits for data so I don't care about the number. Nice to know though.

  • Hi, anyone tried it this time and can confirm whether the Optus Prepaid Starter kit is to be purchased as a second transaction (rather than purchasing the kit together with >$30 groceries in single transaction) please?

  • Wow! Activated and online within 3minutes! Amazing..

Great deal using this sim until my Spintel sim arrives.. :) I ran out of data with my current provider and don't intend on spending $0.50 per MB yes.. thats correct! lol..

Looks like you can't register an online account with a prepaid service tho? https://www.optus.com.au/customercentre/myaccount/registrati…

    • You should be able to register an online account. I've been able to tie my three sims to my account.

  • Am I able to port my existing Optus prepaid number to this sim?

    • No. Port to another carrier first if you want to do this.

  • Bought $40 Opal top up in town Hall today,
but didn't get the offer on the receipt.

    It used to work before.

    Can anybody else confirm that
Opal top up is not counted toward the $30 spend anymore?

    • topped Opal up at TH as well - it's on the receipt, above the drink specials (that's as long as you used your EDR card as well ??

Just states 'you are now eligible to purchase Optus $30 starter kit'.

In any case - I tried at 10.30ish - there was no $30 kits on the 2nd level of WW TH - no point going back there.

  • +1

For those who want nano sims, make sure they have the stock before spending your $30 — as some stores never stock them eg Woden, Weston Creek and Mawson ACT.

    • +1

what you can do is activate a micro sim…then buy a $2 nano from an optus store and they can transfer your number and credit across

      • the nanos are like Hen's teeth - tried two in The Shire - ended up with grabbing a micro sim (last one) - will take it sealed to an Optus store in the city tomorrow.

      • Thanks. Just got some 50 cents optus nano sims from Target and they come in handy for the swap.

        • Honestly- what the hell ??

Take it to an Optus CBD store - and they want to 'activate' the card, then swap etc etc.

Does Optus really want new customers - or just annoy you ??

(sorry - but Optus are doing my head in today - i've ordered online a new $50 SIM ONLY, sent back ID today, only to get some 'cancel' email within one hour, with no order number in the email header. I'm wondering if it's worth changing to a company that doesn't want business ??)

  • Got one today. Weirdo's at my local Woolies didn't bother about ERC, but insisted on ID check before they handed it over. ?!?!?!

  • Normally what's the expiry date for those SIM cards?

    • I got one yesterday and it expires July 2016

  • Anyone know if Woolworths will let you buy 2 sims for $5 using one receipt???

    • I really doubt it (I have tried once and failed) but worth a try you might be lucky :)
I am having trouble finding a woolworths with stock!

  • my 2cents on this deal

4GB data broadband 4G for $5 enticed me to go for it.

    EDR Voucher - $30spend get $10 off
used this for my monthly Boost recharge $40 unlimited (cost $30bux)

    Then bought this $30optus sim.
(hoped it was as easy to transfer it to broadband sim just like telstra…. no luck… optus's system does not automatically let us set mobile simcard starter packs to broadband sim only)

After 5mins of live chat…. "purchased from certain retailer for $30; now i cannot return to them; and stuck; please help"
The Philippine team is pretty good at what they do for Customer Support.

"No problems leave it with me; should be sorted in the next 60mins"

Thus; to add - potentially 4GB data for 30days on Optus 4G network for $5 (NB: dont forget the 5% off egift card from cash rewards)

  • Still stock at WW Carnegie, Vic
