    If you plug this into your phone's audio socket, wouldn't it stop sound from being heard from the phone?

        No it wont, as you have to install an additional APP that will take care of everything, but apparently it doesnt work on every phone model. It does work on my galaxy S3 Mini, but it's very laggy and doesnt always work as expected. I have ordered an original Xiaomi Redmi 2 Pro phone that should be arriving next week, so i hope it will be more stable on that phone.

      That's why you need special app to rule that. Have not found proper one, tried 3 different, all buggy. Most annoying, when somebody calls you and you can't hear each other, because your phone thinks it has earphones plugged in.

      So my plug collects dust until I find proper app :-(

    I bought one of these from gearbest when it finally arrived after 2 months never worked properly so I bought another one, same story.

      … so maybe your phone isn't compatible? What phone/rom you on? These work best with custom roms in my experience (or with some xposed modules that allow reassignment of any "button" on the phone).
