  • 2nd hand 18-55…

    50mm 1.8 if you're pro

your favourite offbrand 18-50 f2.8 if you wanna spend up

    • The mentality of Primes == Pro.

      • Primes = u have to move closer to target using your feet instead of zooming with your fingers, hence Pro

        • +1

How about, making money from photography because it's your full-time job == Pro :)

Edit: Try taking a portrait of a girl as well in both 16mm vs 85mm maintaining edges of subject the same. You'll see why you can't always just zoom with your feet.

      • +1

no, primes = more light, more shallow def, lower iso = better image quality

        • Fast Primes.

    • I thought 50mm 1.2L USM if you are pro.
Having said, 50mm f1.8 is the best value imo

    • 50mm on a crop sensor is too long for most applications. A 30mm is much better suited IMO. May as well get the 28mm pancake instead of the 50mm.

      • 28mm is too pricey. Maybe you meant 24mm f/2.8? You loose in Aperture though.

        • I did mean the 24mm - sorry.

        • @macrocephalic: yes, 24mm on a crop sensor will give ~39mm effective focal length, which is what human eye sees. I'd recommend getting 100D with that lens, to have the smallest+lightest body and lens combo. :)

        • @bargainaus: although the 35mm effective focal length is most used, it is also the most boring focal length. You will find it in most smartphones anyway. I would prefer longer focal length for portrait (nice bokeh and better looking), concert etc, or if you like to shoot landscape, choose wider focal length.

      • +1

Yeah I have a Canon 50mm f1.4 and it's a nice lens but it's utility is hampered on a crop sensor unless you're able to put some distance between yourself and the subject. I'd recommend starting with something closer to 24 - 30mm, or a zoom lens that covers that range.

18-50 is way too limited and not very good. Try 24-105 or more. If you are not sure if you really want to get into photography, get a second hand 18-55 for $50 (or whatever they are) and try. Otherwise go straight to a good lens. I would definitely not recommend a prime at any price. Ask a photographer friend because there is a lot of bad advice out there.

      • First substanceless comment in this thread. You are recommending a 600$ lens (24-105mm) with an entry level DSLR for a newbie, also bashing Prime lens in the process, seriously bro??

        • Yeah, I was expecting comments like yours, that's why I told the person to talk to a photographer. I have taken hundreds of thousands of photos professionally. The lens is much much more important than the camera. The 1200 is basically a dumbed down 70D (or whatever they are up to) and on the same setting both cameras will give you very similar photos up to 1600 ISO. You cannot take a group photo and then an individual photo with a prime in most cases. Yeah whatever.

        • @abacus:

You cannot take a group photo and then an individual photo with a prime in most cases.

24mm f/2.8. Take the group photo from distance, then walk over to get close for individual shot. There, easy fix.

I'm newbie (not professional!). I used the kit zoom and hated it, now I use the prime and life has never been better.

Anyway, it would have made much sense to me if you had suggested the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.

        • @bargainaus: if you have a wall or people behind you, you can't do that and your subjects are not going to hang around while you go walkies. Hire a 24-105 and let me know which your prefer.

        • @abacus: I'll take f/1.8 over f/3.5-5.6 anyday of the week, thank you :)

        • @bargainaus: 24-108 is F4. If you have four people lined up and you try to take a photo at 1.8 at 90mm, three will be out of focus. It does depend what you are photoing. Primes are great to take one photo or photos of the same thing. Then to carry two bodies and lenses around is a pain, unless you are a professional, who carry two bodies and the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8.

        • @abacus: Yes I know. I'll apply smaller aperture with the footwork I mentioned. :)

F/1.8 is for control, not necessarily I'll shoot at 1.8 all the time!

"18-50 is way too limited and not very good"

I wouldn't say that, but it may not be appropriate depending on what you want to take photo's of. Currently I have my eye set on a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens and I suspect once I have it it'll spend far more time on my camera (650D) than my existing 50mm f1.4 or 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 lenses. That said, I wouldn't necessarily recommend that Sigma to the buyer of this camera given it's a $750+ lens.

Good choice of lens. I would rather buy an expensive lens than a pricey camera. Camera always drops in price. Lens price usually more stable. I hardly changed lenses, but I changed camera about once a year.

        • @cheapo999: Why would you change bodies so often? Very little improvement in a year.

        • @abacus: most of the time i bought on special prices thanks to ozbargains. If I sell within the year or before new model is announced, I always get at least the cost I bought. Many times I even made little profit. Digital camera tech is changing very quick.

        • @cheapo999: A true ozbargainer :) Well done.

  • This is insane cheap…

    • Haha that's why I posted it. Good to see the prices of DSLR coming down.

  • How much is the standard lenses that normally came with it?

  • Canon is taking over the DSLR market share with these cheap cameras. Get the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM for your first lens, although I doubt you'll ever want to put it down/replace it. :p

    • Yeah this camera used to retail for double the price. Good to have a range of lenses or would you just stick with the one?

      • I'm sticking with just this one, will add the EF-S 10-18mm in future if I can get a bargain. This 50mm can be used as everyday lens, albeit with bit of effort with your leg. :p
The image quality is stunning, considering the price. And the Bokeh is good!

    • It depends on the situation you're aiming for. I think something closer to 30mm might be a better choice for a crop sensor, given the 50mm on this camera will be closer to 80mm on a full frame. Certainly they are usable, but 50mm on the crop sensor gives a pretty narrow shot so you might need to do a fair amount of back peddling to frame your subject. I've had issues doing this indoors at times with my 50mm on a 650D and would hit a wall before getting the shot I wanted. I don't mind using my feet, but sometimes the space doesn't allow for it. If you can frame the shot these do have fantastic bokeh but.

I think as a starter lens, something closer to 30mm would be more versatile, or go with a zoom lens.

  • Good price, but Canon 100D got a lot better specs and worthed the premium price at $369 free shipping from kogan.

    • It's Kogan, enough to put down the interest. Bear in mind, Canon offers 2 years of warranty if you buy local stock.

      • Yeah comes down to how much you value local warranty. If it is the first DSLR you are purchasing, local warranty would be very handy to have.

    • can I still claim the $75 cashback from Cannon if bought from Kogan?\

    • The 100D is slightly better, but it's still using the same seven year old sensor - so picture quality isn't much different.

      • Selling point of 100D is being world's lightest DSLR, but it has less knobs and buttons than other models to achieve this feat. Bear handed people beware, it would be too small to grip.

      • Slight doesn't cut it. The processor is DIGIC5 instead of DIGICS4, Burst Rate 4, instead of 3, Screen 1040K instead of 460k, and much lighter.

        • Forgot the touchscrren LCD?

        • @bargainaus: yeah, and also external mic jack, necessary for video, and ISO all up to 25600 instead of 6400

        • +1

@cheapo999: I was looking to get one (body only) in last months eBay 20%, but teds f'ed it pretty well.

        • +1

          @bargainaus: teds is hopeless sometimes

  • Not the best lens however a used 28-300mm Tamron can be had for less than $100 on ebay. This is not the best lens you can buy but its a great all purpose travelling lens. If you are a purist than it is not the lens for you - general purpose beginners lens only.

  • How do you get it down to $223? I got $243? 348-30-75 = $243
Do I have to buy the gift card first then use it??

    • An extra $20 when you use the gift cards purchased from Coles (Extra 10% value)

  • Nice price for this unit. Still very happy with the competing entry level Nikon D3300 from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/183898 which compares favorably accross the board to the Canon D1200.

SLR cameras are almost like printers now. The makers almost give you the entry level camera body to lock you into their brand and get you buying their more expensive lenses and camera bodies down the track. It's worth considering if the cost / range of lenses from a given manufacturer are suitable to your future needs / wallet.

    • Yeah that's the way most things are heading. Canon and Nikon are both great brands so you can't go wrong.

    • +1

Canikon is getting much pressure from mirrorless competitors. It's good for us bargainers.

  • +2

Get a Sigma 17-50 f2.8. With some bargain you can buy it for $380 easily. I was able to get the Canon 70D at $650 after cash back and that lens for $350. Then I don't use it much now as I'm learning to use a single prime (24mm pancake). Not happy with the 39mm equivalent. It would be perfect for me if its 35mm equivalent but couldn't find any cheap lens for that focal length.

    • But that's just 4mm difference bro??

    • +1

got the sigma 17-50 f2.8 myself. awesome take anywhere lens! i got the lens for $343 less TRS too. Pity the dollar is quite weak atm with most aussie stores selling for >$400

i got a Canon 10-18 f4.5-5.6 STM + Canon 50mm f1.8 II too. hardly ever use the nifty fifty tbh. the 10-18 is really convenient for landscapes, tight spaces and dare i say it, selfies with an SLR lol. but yeah it's not as versatile as the Sigma.
