    LICENSE

    • License deadline: redeem within 30 days of purchase
    • Minor updates included
    • Activation included for 10 computers
    • Length of access: 30 years

You also get a free, optional VPN account to encrypt all your traffic

    • +3

      Activation for 10 computers.

      How many simultaneous IPs?
      How many simultaneous devices?

    • +1

MINOR updates means once you move off windows 10, or possibly earlier if they have big feature changes, you're done for. This is not a lifetime licence in any sense of the word.

      • +5

What big new features would you need for a DNS service? There is no software to install so what's the reference to Windows 10?

        • +1

          What about IPV6?

        • @scupper:create a routing table

        • @scupper:

Interesting, but what do you reckon the timeline is for them to force people off IPV4? Or possibly ISPs only offering IPV6 as they've exhausted their IPv4 addresses?

Probably before 30 years you would guess but perhaps we'll have a global mode or a holideck.

        • +1

Usually programs that get updated for a new OS get a 'major' version upgrade. Regardless of not changing features.

With windows 10 out you'll probably be ok for a while, with a likely major version change when win11 comes out.

For example, I've been debating if I'll commit to netlimiter again due to their pricing policy. Major version change just due to win10. On some software I want true lifetime expirations, even if the initial cost is greater.

PS: Comments below - if it's just lengthening your subscription then I find it hard to know whether 'major upgrade limitations' are enforcable.

I'm also not saying it's a bad price - it's good, really. Even if it only lasts 3 years.

        • @neil: is a "holideck" a holodeck that just plays holiday-themed holograms?

        • @justtoreply:

Plussed you just for mentioning NetLimiter

      • It doesn't even have a client, there's nothing that's going to get dropped when windows 11 comes out.

What might happen is that one day this might be rendered useless because of something netflix does to stop it

  • +4

    OP, turn your pm on

    • +2

I read it 3 times to make sure it's not "OP, turn your porn on" …oh my mind

  • Work with Chromecast?

    • +2

only using Static routing on router or using a rooted Chromecast

    • +1

I don't believe you can set DNS on Chromecast unless your router allows you to set custom DNS. For example : BigPond Modems don't allow it , unless you bridge it to another router.

      • A TeamEureka rooted Chromecast will allow you to change Chromecast DNS settings. Unfortunately if you have used your Chromecast it cannot be rooted, you need a brand new Chromecast and it must have a suitable build number (most do).

        • -1

Blocking google dns is a hit and a miss. It is not set and forget kind of thing. Android apps sporadically lag.

        • @777: Mine has been blocked for a bloody long time at the router without issue.

Multiple devices, and no one complains of lag.

        • @OzJD:
          Same Same

        • +1

          @777:

No, it's not. Google DNS is always 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. If you've blocked those, of course it's set and forget.

        • Interesting. I have an unused one sitting there. Pm me a link with info on what to do?

        • @dazweeja:Yes I know :p
What happens is some apps with geo location and adds rely on the Google dns. Kinda hard-coded like chromecast and if you have auto update on apps the initial sync buggy . That's my investigation do far but I do have multiple firewalls within my internal network. Happy to be wrong

        • Will be looking at it but I know my chromecast every now and then will throw me geo location error even with the Google dns blocked, my proxy dns enabled on router routing done for the Google and optus dns. I do have a optus cable modem. Also tried the getflix dns same thing.

      • Same with Optus cable routers even though Optus swear they haven't modified the firmware..they have. Only way to do it is as your said by bridging another router.

        • You could also set up a separate router on a subnet specifically for the CCast.

  • Tempting - mine's expiring later this year.

  • -3

This is so tempting.. But the fact that two people can't use it at the same time is annoying.. (Two households)

    • Yeh so true wish I could share with friends and family and other people…

    • No idea why people would neg me rofl

      • +1

Because you can buy it now, enter the code on your account and 30 years will be added onto of your current subscription. 30 years for 52 dollars, pretty hard to argue with that.

  • +7

Recall that there are other free smartdns services out there for those who want the same thing for less… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198448 - I use this service with my fireTV stick and it works a charm. Still I guess this deal is one for the mass's as everyone seems to go crazy over smart DNS deals :)

    • +2

I have made a shell script for Windows to auto update that for my friend, happy to pass if anyone needs it. Basically clearing cache and cookies, restarting browser after certain interval and open their force ip update page
Or the other one I created was a bat file and scheduled that executive file every fortnight
Btw there are a few free one out there on a similar principle

      • PM'd asking, ta!

      • PM asking too, thanks 777

    • Thanks for that. Will give the free service a go as keen to get off the paid one I am currently using.

    • +3

The benefit of Getflix is you can choose the region you wish to appear as…. so you can access content only available to Netherlands or Japan for example

  • Bugger I still have 356 days on my current subscription remaining

  • +4

Ending up buying it anyway, redemption was quick and here's where I am now:

    Status: Active (11031 days remaining)
    Subscription Expiry: Dec 6, 2045

    • So is it like normal getflix they can be added to the router.
What does the 10 device activation means, that they add the Mac address if each device in database sitting behind the router using it?. Would be a flaw if associates each browser as a a device

      • So the 10 devices I haven't figured out yet … AFAIK it only lets 1 IP address in the portal.

        • one ip per session is their restriction on normal accounts as well. Wouldn't be much of a deal for me if add each Mac/uuid for each devices as I would personally need double than that :p

        • @777:

There isn't anything in the manage section or help about devices.

          • 1 IP address at a time
          • 3 VPN connections at a time
          • 1 DNS over VPN at a time

I'm trying to remember my networking knowledge but I don't believe MAC addresses of internal devices are sent outside the router? Only the MAC address of the router would be seen by the DNS server.

        • @neil:
          No it does
There are different ways to it. Like at work we use Tr069 protocol and then we also use the browser uuid via vindicia like the information being sent as headers. They might use TCP not UDP periodically to check the device .

The bad part it if you access using three browser on a same device the not the app, some dms will register as different devices, which in my opinion is a (some for some it is advance feature.)

Damn Google, they took my DNA proxy server down after they knew what I was doing. Personally using AWS trails month to month. This would be perfect If they don't register devices

        • @777:

All of that is easily solved on a router with DD-WRT/Tomato/Merlin/etc. Nothing on my network can make an outgoing connection on port 53. The router intercepts and forwards all DNS requests.

        • @dazweeja: so your browser headers are not passed ?
We intercept the browser header and create a unique identifier for them which gets updated in the dms as part of subscription and identity management

    • Was it just a promo code that you had to add to the account?

      • Correct - used mailinator to get a 10% discount code as well. Took US$3 off the price. Then click on redeem and get a promo code to apply in GetFlix account.

        • It's it a random promo code? or would it be Generic for anyone to use?

        • @Catalystic: Unfortunately not - I tried it on another account and said 'too many uses' - so just bought two instead…!

    • +3

      Does it predict your lifetime?

  • +1

Wait a moment… Is it one off payment?
It used to be an annual subscription…

    • +2

Sounds like it adds 30 years to your subscription, which is basically a lifetime in tech terms

      • +2

Yeah … and lifespan of companies. How will they make money for the next 29 years? :)

  • Great deal. Thanks fozzie.

I originally used UnblockUs but switched to Getflix because it was much cheaper. I haven't had a single problem with either service.

  • +1

Good deal, still keen to know what they mean by "Activation included for 10 computers".

  • Got 2 - thanks OP

  • +3

    Length of access: 30 years

To bad we'll be on Mars by then :)

    • But Mars content sucks, so you will doubly need this.

  • I just purchased a year :(

    • Same here for $17

      • +1

You can still purchase this and apply the lincense code as promo code and it will add 30+ years.
My account expiry was June 16 and now it is June 46.
        :)

        • TERMS

          • All sales final
          • Instant digital redemption
          • If you have an existing subscription, this lifetime subscription won’t apply to it. Please cancel your subscription, if you already have one, before you activate this one.

@ShaneT Interesting to know that you were able to apply the promo code to your existing subscription as the terms says to cancel subscription first before applying.

        • @Fernley: Worked for me as well.

        • @Smigit: Thanks. Hopefully it works for me as well when I apply it.

        • +1

          @Fernley:

I had 168 days left on my existing subscription. Cancelled my CC to apply the promo code and it looks like it stacked, as I now have 11125 days remaining to March 10, 2046.

I don't think I'll know how to work any technology in 2046.

        • -

      • howd you get it for $17?

  • +1

Sweet. Subscribed now until July 2046. Worth it just to not have to worry about it again.

  • +7

I am so lost among these conversations. But seems good deal so will buy one any way.

    • ^^ true ozbargainer here guys ^^

  • +1

Noob Comment - what do I need this for? If it is for US Netflix / Hulu etc - can I purchase thouse services with AU Credit cards? Also, can I use this service on my game consoles? Thanks for your help.

    • +1

Yes and Yes. Netflix provides content based on your current location, not the billing region. This service detects when you are authenticating to Netflix, Hulu etc and routes the traffic in such a way that it appears to come from the US, UK etc and in turn Netflix, Hulu etc will show content from those regions. Services that aren't supported will be treated as local traffic still.

You can configure the DNS either on a device (PC, console etc) or on your home router as a catch all (in which case all devices using the default network settings will inherit those settings). Personally I just use the router.

The one thing to note is that if you have unmetered Netflix, Xbox Live etc, then that may no longer be unmetered by your ISP if you use the GetFlix DNS instead of the ISP one.

  • +1

•If you have an existing subscription, this lifetime subscription won’t apply to it. Please cancel your subscription, if you already have one, before you activate this one.

Can you cancel your subscription and apply this to your existing account or do you need to cancel/close existing account and effectively start again as a completely new customer?

  • +4

Minor update included … what is a "major update" in Getflix Terms???

Do we not get access to fast servers in the future? No IPV6? Do I need to worry that the service gets flooded by users and gets unusable?

I have a subscription which expires in November … so good timing. But when a company starts offering lifetime services it's for me always a CAUTION sign … worth a gamble but the service needs to stay active and usable for around 2.5 years to break even.

    • +1

Does it really matter. Getflix has been a wonderful service and I hope that buying a lifetime subscription will keep them in business for as long as possible. Who knows what will happen in the coming years. At least we can have this while it lasts as long as possible and without any further cost. The VPN service also works great and it costs around $50 US per year from many other providers like PureVPN.

      • +3

Mhhh … it matters to me (but I understand where you are coming from). I like Getflix and it's a wonderful and great service.

But I would not like subscribing to a lifetime service just to find out some (short) time late that it's not usable anymore. It sounds like a great offer (2.5 years is not that long) … but the yearly fee is also not too bad and you keep the flexibility.

        • +6

Agree the offer doesn't add up. Either they have been charging excessively or they expect to be out of business in near future.

        • +2

@gamechanger: I think the same. Makes me think that when a company dumps the price and offers 'lifetime' for a price then could they be out of business soon. They may get a blast of revenue now, but how do they then sustain a business that costs money to run when the annuity revenue stops.

        • @nonpop: It is a promotion but through a third party. Their own site isn't offering any lifetime plans. I don't know for myself, but I'd have though that once the initial setup was done that maintaining GetFlix wouldn't be overly expensive either, particularly due to them not being dependant on shipping clients to different platforms (Windows, Macs, etc) since it's all backend network trickery that'd connected to by standardised config on the client side.

They have started to dabble in other areas such as VPN's etc, so there's potential avenue there.

It actually wouldn't shock me if they or other similar services ended up partnering with other companies producing hardware so that devices could use region switching as a saleable feature on the box.

    • I just read that about 3 days ago, america ran out of IPv4 addresses to assign. Seeing how getflix currently seems reliant on IPv4, I wonder if this has anything to do with it. Would this affect service in the future? I'm torn on whether to get this.

  • +1

What are the benefits of this?

    • +1

      What is Getflix?

Getflix allows users from Australia, New Zealand and all over the world to easily access global video and music streaming services. Getflix uses Smart DNS technology to bypass the geo-blocking and open up this amazing world of entertainment.

Watch the latest movies, TV series, children's shows and classic titles from multiple devices including PCs, game consoles, mobile phones, tablets and more.
      https://www.getflix.com.au/

Let you watch shows online from other countries, Hulu, USA Netflix, etc. It also has a VPN feature, which will hide where you are, so that you can download without anyone knowing who you are

      • +1

last time I tried the getflix trial and tried watching BBC Live during an F1 race, it was unwatchable - a slideshow

        • iPlayer is definitely the most flaky for me too.
Most of the time it works well, but you need good connection speed.
During school hols when my net connection speed halves due to congestion on the RIM, iPlayer is useless, outside those times it's usually OK.

        • +3

What makes you think Getflix was responsible for this? If you are only using them as a DNS proxy (and not in full fledged VPN mode), speed will be unaffected.

  • +1

You can watch BBC Iview/US Channels and a whole bunch of Geoblocked stuff without having to mess around all the time, I wonder if uptake is slow for GetFlix which is why they are literally throwing away subscriptions… What gives…

  • Thank you!!! I signed up for my 14 day trial last week and would have been subscribing anyway. :)

  • Would love to know how this differs to a regular subscription?

  • Thanks, my one year subscription was due to start at 08:02 today. I got into my PayPal account and cancelled it, and bought this one instead. I'm ahead even if getflix goes under, as I had already committed to a higher price.

  • +1

could be silly question, but will this work as a VPN for torrents?

    • +1

Good question in terms of the extra VPN they mention.

      • Yeah exactly, also a a bit confused on the 10 devices it says you can use

    • +1

Interested to know too and how it relates to 10 devices. I'm not understanding as when I used the trial, I had to change the DNS settings on my router. If I do that, where does 10 devices come into play as there isn't really any software installed on each local machine?

I presume in a household all running the same public IP (internal IP's would be different obviously for each machine) then there is no device limit?

Is there additional software for the VPN feature? Supported operating systems?

    • +1
    • +1

I've used the VPN for a few small torrents

    • Yep it does. I've been using it for a few months now

      • How are your speeds.
