cant be ARSSD to buy but have a +

Waiting till they are sub $80

    • +15

Then you'll be tossing up between it and the $160 480gb.

      • I'm waiting for them to be $50 to $60 so I can buy 6 units (upgrade my PC, my laptop, mum's PC, dad's PC, brother's PC, brother's laptop).

They're mostly older Core 2 Duos bought at bargain basement prices, they surprisingly run completely fine ~8 years after manufacture. Don't need an SSD for them, but such a performance leap at low price would be hard to pass up.

Though I myself may skip SATA/AHCI SSDs and upgrade my desktop to an NVMe PCIe (or U.2) SSD in the next 12 months.

    • EDIT: Removed.. beaten to it by Thrift

      • +1

Id then probably get 2 X 240GB so i can RAID them

        • Sure, but you will also increase your failure rate chance by 100%, and unless your QD is >4 you won't be seeing a great deal of real-world performance gains. Better going with a larger capacity or getting a drive that supports NVMe instead

        • @arc4ne: urrr… what?

        • -1

          @arc4ne:

          100%?

          Are you smoking drugs??

        • +3

@tendollar: You double the risk of data loss if you stripe 2 single drives for performance (if one dies, you won't be able to rebuild the data)

Also the speed gains for running 2 in raid are minimal at best in real-world. Most people are better off with a single drive with larger capacity.

        • @arc4ne:

Sure, but you will also increase your failure rate chance by 100%,

lol .. you talking about RAID 0

I would be running them in RAID 1

        • @easternculture: Then you would be losing half the capacity ;)

Either way, I'd rather wait for the Samsung 950 Pro m.2

        • @arc4ne:

id rather have my data backed up . Data to me is more valuable

        • @easternculture:Cool. I still buy SSD's for speed myself. My important data is backed up via other means :)

  • Is this a 2.5?

  • +2

Man, I only just bought that 120GB one off MSY for $60 a little over a month ago. Now there's this better value deal
How are they managing to push these prices with the crappy AUD exchange rate?

    • +4

because the cost of storage is decreasing. it's like when 10mb drives were $500 back in 1990 or whatever

      • +1

In 2002/03, I was selling 1gb sd card at $999!

        • +7

how do you sleep at night

        • +10

@inose: on a bed of money

        • Yep, i used to sell media at $1 per MB.

This was back when most cards were between 32 and 128MB though.

        • is that deal still available?

    • I also bought the 120GB model. Two days ago. :(((

  • Arguably the best code to date. Great post and good bargain.

  • +1

Yay! Bought my first SSD. Thanks OP

  • Bought one. Let's hope nobody comes up with a better deal for at least a few months or I'll be punching myself…

    • +10

      "…or I'll be punching myself…"

Just punch yourself anyway. You know you want to. :D

  • +1

Dumb question, but how hard is it to install one of these things? I have an existing 128gb SSD and wouldn't mind upgrading it.

    • +8

Make sure your SSD is not an mSata SSD (they are smaller).
      Not a dumb question.
Depends on your laptop. If you have an ultrabook, most of them have their SSD soldered on, so it means you won't be able to upgrade, some even have proprietary SSD connectors, so the appropriate answer is: it depends on your laptop.
If you have a normal fat laptop, there's an access panel on the bottom of your laptop, you could swap this in under a minute if you have one.
Post your laptop's model number and other OzB members should be able to answer if you can upgrade or not, a picture of the bottom would be helpful too.

      • thanks mate. I have a desktop. argh….I think it's just too much of a headache to reinstall windows and everything else. I'll probably just pass unless I can set this up as a 2nd SSD for the PC.

        • +2

The good news is that there is no reinstall involved. You just trim the fat by moving the stuff that does not fit into the SSD onto another drive and then migrate the operating system over. It's less time consuming than a full install of windows.

        • +2

I think it's just too much of a headache to reinstall windows and everything else.

          WHY would you do that?

You have a 128GB SSD and you want to install a 250, so it's as easy as piss to migrate the OS across.

Open Google, search for the term "migrate SSD".

          @scrimshaw:

You just trim the fat by moving the stuff that does not fit into the SSD onto another drive…

WHY? You are replying to somebody who already has a 128GB SSD and wants to upgrade to a 250GB… I can assure you that the new 250GB drive will fit everything from the 128GB without any trimming.

        • @scrimshaw: thank you for your help. Greatly appreciated. If the deal is still o.k. I'll grab one. 😄

    • +2

      depends on your setup/PC..

  • Just got one, hope shipping is fast. It was $0 and up to the seller right?

      • Any offers on wd 6tb reds?

    • That's right, you choose the free option. There's plenty of praise on OzB for PC Bytes' delivery times. If anything does go wrong, they are really quick to fix the problem.

  • thanks

  • +3

You need to do your arsemagic on some of those ~500GBs.

  • Absolute steal. The price per GB now of SSD's is awesome! Great work as usual TA…

  • +1

Is cheap, but is this reliable? Always hear Samsung ones are more reliable.

  • +1

Dang this is nice but I need a good deal on 120 gig ones so that I can 'upgrade' my dad's ancient computers he keeps at home

    • Have to agree. For many people 120G is more than enough and just as fast in the real world.

I've bought 240G drives on special and still have 2 lying around unused whereas all my 120G on found homes in hours…

So, any 120G specials would be much appreciated….

  • Thank you OP, got one.

  • Is this 7mm?unable to find it on pc byte portal

  • +1

im in the market for a 1tb ssd any deals?

  • +2

Same price at MSY $106 for those who would like to pick up locally

    http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/new-products/15902-sandisk-s…

  • +2

TA, time for a 480gb/500gb deal please ;)

  • I am going broke. I keep buying all these bargains only because of the catchy TA themed codes.

  • yes yes yes 480gb SSD !!!

  • *ARSSED (SSED = Solid State External Drive)

  • +2

A deal on the Samsung 512MB pro or something would be awesome

    • +3

Not much you can do with 512MB nowadays ;)

  • Does the Samsung Galaxy S5 support the 240GB SSD?

    • +1

Not sure if the question is a joke, but in short, this 2.5" SSD (usually for laptops) would not be supported by the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone.

  • Cheers OP, got one.

Now, is this faster than my Samsung 840? Or slower? I'd rather have Windows and Programs on the slower one and Games on the faster one.

  • +1

Did I need it? Nope. Did I get one? Yep.

  • Coupon code "ARSSD" is not valid.
Showing as $115 but with free shipping.

Can't bring myself to buy one when others have bought for $106….

  • Not yet sold out? Thought only 100 left

    • Still valid!

  • Any chance of a deal on the msata drives? Often requested on here, but rarely deals - i'd take one for sure.

  • Good price considering the 120 is around $70

  • Great way to breathe new life into old laptops— or on a desktop, to run your OS/programs, w/your user folders shifted out onto a HDD for larger/cheaper storage.

    Good deal, thanks TA.

    :)

    • how do you install one? sata usb cable only option?

  • Hi Guys I am completely confused about this thing. I have no clue in technology. I thought it was an external hard drive where I could store stuff on it and bought it lol.
I have a Macbook Air 13 Inch 2013. Do I have to open my macbook up and install it? Is one already in there?
Thanks guys any help will be appreciated lol.
Pls pity my stupidity on this stuff

    • Uhm… the Macbook air doesn't use SATA drives. You could use it as an external if you get an enclosure for it though. Do you normally buy stuff with 0 research? lol
