ALDI LED Motion Sensor Night Light with Colour Change $5.99

150

Starts Saturday 3rd October.

Plug in night light with colour change and white light or motion sensor and white light.
I took another photo from the catalogue here to zoom in on the settings.

There are 2 different models.
1 - Colour change (Comes on when it gets dark) has circle of colours on box and is not a motion detector model. It can also be turned on & off manually.
These are just night lights - low light output, to reassure young minds or find our way around.

2 - White Light (Motion detector) has "with motion detector" under "LED nightlight". Switch selects between always on / off/ 30 / 60 / 90 second on after motion detected.
Thanks to Infidel for your help.

  • Bought one last time and the motion sensor doesn't work

    • Did you return it and get a refund?

      • No, I lost the receipt..

        The motion sensor is crap…

        • +2

Was it this exact model? You should of bought another one and returned the 1st one with the new receipt.

        • @luke73:

          yes, exact same device

          what you don't believe me

        • Yes I believe you, just want to clear up which model it was.

        • @luke73:

I tested it in my bathroom.

          Turn off all lights

          Walk in front of it,
Even waive my hands right in front of the sensor
          and it never turns on…

So if u want to use it as a night light
You need manually turn it on each time
and the side switch does not make it as convenient as front push button type.

The sensor does not work, so only use for it is a manual night light

          ==

Thanks for the review, but I will still buy one and try it out for myself as Aldi have a 60 day return policy and we are also covered by the Australian consumer law if a product is not fit for purpose.

        • @luke73:

          do u own one?

        • @luke73:

cool, if it works, let me know

  • +1

i have one these for awhile, have had no issues, will buy again

    • +1

do u leave it on auto
      and turn off the lights
so the device is in the dark

      then u walk past it
      or waive your hands
      the device turn on?

      • i have motion sensor model "casalife" Product No 91676.i have set on 30secs.

        • +1

          got the same model

I put it on auto, but the light never turns on when I waive my hand in front of it..

how do u set up for 30 second?

        • -1

          @tyler.durden:
Yours will be different model, lacking the timer settings on the switch. Auto just turns your model on in dark.

But yours has colour light the motion sensor model lacks ;-)

        • @Infidel:

Auto does not turn on in the dark..

Auto turns it on now, but it cycles through the colors..

          The sensor does not work

          ===

I being reading the manual and it seems this models does lack motion sensor..

Not sure what is the point of it turning on all the time at night, but even so..
          that function is not working

          ====

does the one with the timer have color changes or only white?

        • @tyler.durden:

I was just guessing about the term 'auto', not having seen your unit :-(

Ah, so auto is auto cycling of colour, rather than 1 constant colour.

So just a mesmerisingly colourful display ;-) Stoners might love it, I wouldn't.

Should switch off during the day / when light is turned on. Sounds like that feature has failed in yours.

See review of Motion Detecting model below

        • @Infidel:

Just put it in your bathroom and turn off the light.
          And then walk pass it.

I think motion sensor one might be more useful..
Though it might be annoying during the day
when it turns on as you walk pass it.

          What does the timer do?
Does it dictate how long the light stays on?

          ===
The color dark sensor one does not work properly..
You need to shine a flashlight on it, to turn off the light.
So I think this will be turn on all the time
          which would waste electricity.

        • @tyler.durden:
See review below. Motion sensor only turns on in low light, so quite useful.

Timer is length of time light is on after motion detected.

I have had $10 Aldi motion sensor torches in kitchen for years. Much brighter light, better motion sensor, auto on if power fails, removable from charger base to use as bright torch. Very useful.
Only real downside of those is 20 second fixed time of light on after motion detected. Have to do the lights on dance every 20 seconds ;-)

Mounted this unit beside torch unit to give initial brighter light with duller light from 20-90 seconds if no further movement detected. Seems best of both worlds.

        • @Infidel:

do u have a photo of the torch?

        • @tyler.durden:
          From May Aldi Sale
Noticed it comes up for sale about once a year.

    • +1

I have three running just fine from last year, even bought extra for my grandkids homes.

Aldi had three different versions last year, you needed to check the boxes very closely,
or you may end up with a non motion sensor version.

Hi OP, hope you can put this link into the description too as a reference http://www.lasoo.com.au/catalogue/special-buys-wk-40/544i4zn…

  • +1

we got a few the last time they all work fine for us.

  • +1

Why would you want multiple colours? Someone enLIGHTen me.

    • +3

Total monster protection. Each colour repels a different type of monster.

    • Actually, in most of the world a light that changes colour is completely repellent to humans, (unless it is some kind of nightclub and everyone is somewhat intoxicated). The Chinese seem to have a very peculiar appreciation of rainbow-colour changing lights, lamps, taps, showers, appliances, souvenirs, toys, etc — the logic appears to be that if some is designed, made and sold without specific complaint, you keep making things the same way until no more people buy your stuff — until that point you just keep making the same crap without any kind of consumer testing/feedback to see what is effective and what isn't.
That said, if you are using a night light, a white, full-spectrum light is the worst kind of light to use in a sleeping area — blue light is the part of the spectrum you should avoid most before and during sleeping — red light is the best light for sleeping, and of course for night-lights.
It's ironic that red lights are used for brothels — blue would make more sense, and supposedly help to keep junkies away at night.

  • My last one from aldi was crap and didnt work correctly.. not this model though.. then i hought some from bunnings and they work fine.

  • I have the slightly older model from 2 years ago and love them. Great for setting up so that you can move around the house at night without turning on all the lights.

  • +1

    Title is probably incorrect
Sorry luke73, as you're usually spot on ;-)

2 models shown in photos with different features, not 1 model with both features, as in title. That was the situation in previous sale.

Description from Aldi catalog & deal description…
Plug in night light with colour change and white light or
a plug in night light with motion sensor and white light

(If all features in 1 model, would use 'and')

Tried motion sensor model last year - wasn't impressed.

Have few $10 Aldi motion sensor torches & find them great illumination for finding way around the house. Those sit in charger base, acting as motion detecting light with good illumination, turn on with power outage, & have choice of 2 lights as torch when taken out of base - standard beam or broad illumination.

    • Yes that does make sense, I'm a bit confused now as my photo here shows all the settings in the description.
There is 5 settings - Auto Colour Change, Colour Change, Off, White and Auto White.
We will have to wait and see.

      • I got one here

        I think

Auto color change and Auto white is for the motion sensor
but it never works on mine..

The other settings turn the light on permanently or off

        • The colour changing one does not have a motion sensor. Only the white model does.

Auto just means it automatically turns on at night.

        • @pood:

          No

          I got one here,

          -auto just changes the color..

It has nothing to do with "automatically turns on at night"

        • You must have an older model then. The manual for the current colour change model says auto turns on at dusk.

        • @pood:

No I think they don't come up with new model for these lights
I think it is more likely the sensor is broken

I wonder why they don't make the color one also have motion sensor?
There's no point keeping the color one on all the time at night…

          Did u buy any?

        • @tyler.durden:

Yep got one of each. Colour for the kids room so if he wakes up there'll be light straight away, and the white one for the toilet area as that has the motion sensor.

I thought the colour one was motion sensor too until I got home and read the manual!

        • @pood:

          yeap my mistake

I thought they all had motion sensor..

But I think the color dark sensor does not work properly

I just tested it, and it only turns off, when I shine my phone flashlight directly on the sensor

Even the white light from my Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFLs) long tube at the top of my ceiling does not turn off the light.

So this thing will be on all the time which waste electricity.

      • +1

Yes, we'll see. But I'm pretty sure there are different models with the different features described.
Another dodgie description from Aldi :-(

If you look closely at the 2 models in the small photos, the markings on the switches are very different!
One shows a long description for the upper switch position (Auto Colour Change), the motion sensor model has a very short text at the same position.

"Auto" usually refers to auto on in dark. So settings usually would be to have light on/off/on in dark, with choice of colour or white light.

Motion sensor model last year had different switch settings for selecting how long light remained on after motion sensor was triggered, & selecting between sensor / light on / light off.

(As DU99 stated, the motion sensor model has time setings on the switch, eg 30secs)

There was also a battery version last year, so check the description on the box. (3 models as pointed out above)

Hope that resolves the confusion. Choose wisely.

        Easy return if not happy.
I've done return after losing receipt, but knew date & type of purchase. Manager did a search & gave refund.

      • I think for that model the auto mean to turn on when it dark and there is no motion sensor. For the while only it has motion sensor and will turn on when it dark and there is a motion.

        • the color one does have a sensor
but it is a photoelectric sensor to sense darkness..

It seems mine is not working for the darkness sensor

I also thought this was the motion sensor model, which is not..

        • @tyler.durden: Then you need to go back ASAP along with your Receipt. As long as they still has the stock then you'll got a new one, otherwise all they can do is to offer you the refund.

Just back from Aldi with the motion sensor model.

As I predicted - 2 different models. Colour change has circle of colours on box, motion detector has "with motion detector" under "LED nightlight". The models perform different functions.

    Motion detector:
    Switch selects between always on / off/ 30 / 60 / 90 second on after motion detected.

Only turns on by sensor at night.

These are just night lights - low light output, to reassure young minds or find our way around.

Waiting for dark to test fully… light output is from 3 LEDs, just adequate enough not to bump into things.

Motion detector triggers 3m away when approaching from side, but only 1m if approached straight on.

So suited to power points in passage ways with traffic passing across sensor at almost 90 degrees.

Thanks Infidel, I have added some of your info to the description.

  • Just modded the motion sensor model. Now turns on a 240V light 30/60/90 seconds in kitchen when motion is detected in dark.

BUT only do this if you know what you are doing. The circuit operates at mains voltage, just rectified to DC & voltage dropped via a resistor! So thoroughly insulate any modifications.

The NPN power transistor J3Y (max
500mA output) that powers the 3 LEDs (around 4.7V) can be used to switch external devices. Also could power a different low power LED (eg from 3 battery LED torch), power transistor, SCR, etc.

I soldered 2 insulated wires across the transistor's C & E & fed to a powered Remote Relay Box. (Silicon Chip May 2006 - bought for a few dollars when DS exited kit market.) It's just a relay with power supply. That turns on a 240V light bulb mounted on top of the Remote Relay Box.

There are better solutions, but only cost me a few minutes & $6 sensor, as rest was already set up.
