Honestly though AU$370 for a 2yo 3G only phone, I wouldn't even consider it. The Zenfone 2 that has 4GB of ram and 4G was just about the same price with ebay's 15% off.

Does the Zenfone 2 come with a pressure sensitive Wacom pen? No it doesn't!
Some of us that like Note series for this very feature alone.
Sometimes it's not just horsepower of the phone. And really an ASUS?

      • If that's the only thing you care about, then fair enough - go ahead. I personally haven't seen any of my note friends use the pen but obviously it's there so people who need it would buy it. Just don't whinge about no 4G in the future though ;)

You're clearly not a writer or an artist XD
My Note 1 is working just fine as I speak this would be a good upgrade for me.

        • @stormyllama: Also what's wrong with an Asus? It's much better than laggy Samsung. I'm selling my crappy note 4 because it's lagging to a point that it's unusable.
I would say typing is much faster than writing though, at least for a writer. For artists yeah I do agree having a pen helps a lot.

          @clse945111:
Have you tried doing a factory reset since loading any new major software updates?
It may make a world of difference to your device's performance.

Also worth noting that it's not only Samsung devices that may suffer from performance issues following a major software update.
You may also want to try an alternate launcher such as Nova or Smart Launcher to replace the Touchwiz UI that is preloaded on most Samsung devices.

        • @Cobalt_: Yes I factory reset the device after it got the update of 5.0 lollipop, at first it was pretty smooth but then after about 2-3 weeks it not unusable laggy for some odd reason, restarting would help for like half an hour but it goes back to lagging. Thought it might be the apps I installed but then I've had so many android phones with the same apps installed so that shouldn't be the problem.
Tried nova launcher and it didn't make a tiny bit of difference… all my other android phones don't seem to have this problem though, so bye bye touchwizy samsung. Didn't want to root the phone because I want to resell the thing.

          @clse945111:
I'd actually put the blame square on Lollipop. I found it to be extremely unstable even on my Nexus devices. You could hold out for the next Lollipop update (5.1.1) which was supposed to be out for the Note 4 last month or you could hope that Samsung gets Marshmallow out soon, but don't hold your breath on that one.

          edit:
It appears 5.1.1 has been released for the SM-N910F (Europe) and SM-N910C (Asia) Note 4 models. Release for SM-N910G which is the Asia-Pacific model should be out soon hopefully.

        • @clse945111:

New update for 5.1.1 being released today for Australian Note 4. Not up yet. My note 4 is laggy too, it usually when switching apps that it's at it's worse. The zte fit that was selling for $45 actually outperforms my note 4. :( But then 5.1.1 is suppose to be a huge improvement, however touchwiz still has memory management issues. That's why I decided to try the G4 instead.

        • @Ronnnie:

The update for note 4 is up now. Hopefully 5.1.1 resolves the lag issues.

The Telstra one is out, link here:

I'm sure the rest will follow soon

        • @Cobalt_:

On Whirlpool voda and optus users are reporting getting the update.

          I have unbranded phone.

      • If you want a pen, get a proper iPencil.

          @KaptnKaos: $1000 a page.

After using Note3, I switched back to old S4 since Note3 has serious GPS issue.
It will be very hard for Note3 to get GPS signal, and even if you can have GPS signal, it will lost frequently during navigation. I got mine replaced and still has the same issue. I asked Samsung service centre and they said Note3 has hardware issue with GPS. I love the stylus, however the I also need GPS, and I can live without stylus anyway, since I have wacom stylus in my laptop.

    • Zenfone? LOOOOOL XD

    • Does the zenfone 2 have a tougher screen than the zenfone 5. I dropped my zenfone 5 one time and cracked screen..Waited nearly 12 months and sent away and bought a new screen and digitizer and installed them. Dropped it one time and again screen cracked.

      • +1

Don't think zenfone 2 has a widespread screen cracking issue (but then neither did zenfone 5), but honestly there's just no guarantee the screen isn't gonna crack if you keep dropping the phone, it's glass after all….

        • I put it in top pocket and sometimes falls out when I bend down. Thing is the edge is very thin and if it falls and hits on the edge it's goodnight screen and it's in a case. I have a Huawei g526 and lost count how many times it's hit the ground never broken it's bulletproof. I do like the zenfone 5 though so I will probably send for another screen and LCD digitizer and frame it's $27 delivered from China just a bit fiddly to install.

  • What's the difference between this and the SM-N9005?

  • +1

Only real downside is no 4g.

Are you sure? The N9006 seems to support LTE-A.

    http://www.sammobile.com/2013/08/15/galaxy-note-iii-with-mod…

    • It shows no 4g on the sites technical specs for the phone.

Is there a reason why we may believe that is incorrect?

    • +1

Official Samsung pagefor the N9006 variant (In Chinese, use Google Translate) only shows
      3G WCDMA 850/900 / 1,900 / 2,100MHz
      GSM / EDGE GSM 850/900 / 1,800 / 1,900MHz

  • Note 3 still rocks hard! Not discounting its age, it has the specs of most of the current phones, a screen that is still awesome considering its 2 years old, removable battery, expandable memory, accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, temperature, humidity, gesture an IR sensor, And.. S-pen. Plus when rooted and running bloat free with new rom, it's a great daily driver.. (clearly I own one). Good price!

    • Totally. I bought a mint Note3 for $360 after persevering long and hard with a Windows Nokia phone. Glad i made the switch and sought a Note3 rather than the Note5. The ability to swap out the battery and MicroSD is pretty important to me.

I got in quick before they become really sought after and prices rocket up.

      • I hope prices do, I want to sell my note 4 soon. :D

  • "Still a good phone"

My note 2 is still a good phone! I flog the hell outta this thing, use it for remote PC repair/access and allll sorts. Recently swapped to the 4g version, since my sister got "sick of how buggy/slow it is" (but never did updates since owning?!) and got herself a note 4 on contract.
Both have broken screens(ergh!!)… but surprisingly hard to spend money on. This deal might be the solution. But what-then for this fast & capable note 2's?! LOL.

  • What is LTE?

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, and isn’t as much a technology as it is the path followed to achieve 4G speeds. As it stands, most of the time when your phone displays the “4G” symbol in the upper right corner, it doesn’t really mean it. When the ITU-R set the minimum speeds for 4G, they were a bit unreachable, despite the amount of money tech manufacturers put into achieving them. In response, the regulating body decided that LTE, the name given to the technology used in pursuit of those standards, could be labeled as 4G if it provided a substantial improvement over the 3G technology.
Immediately networks began advertising their connections as 4G LTE, a marketing technique that allowed them to claim next-gen connectivity without having to reach the actual required number first; it would be like the U.S. claiming they had landed on the moon because they got pretty close and the spaceship that got them there was a lot better than the previous ship. It’s not entirely trickery though, despite inconsistent speeds depending on location and network, the difference between 3G and 4G is immediately noticeable.
    Speed
So the real question is, can you feel a difference between 4G and LTE networks? Is the speed of loading a page or downloading an app on your handheld a lot faster if you have LTE technology built in? Probably not. While the difference between slower 3G networks and new 4G or LTE networks is certainly noticeably faster, most of the 4G and “true 4G” networks have upload and download speeds that are almost identical. For now, LTE is the fastest connection available for wireless networks.

I still dunno where I stand, on 4G.

I never saw the point. I recently swapped from 3G to 4G Note2, and did a speed test at the same place we've got ~40Mbit NBN.
40Mbit, and 60Mbit speeds over the air!!! Each test used 125MB of my 1GB monthly allowance! And made we wonder again…. for what??

      • +1

I think 4G is all in the mind for most users. If you have good reception on 3G it's satisfyingly quick for browsing, email, YouTube, and social networking on your phone.

        • For me Optus 3G at peak times became very slow, Optus 4G still slows down at peak but still very usable.

  • Yeah 3g is pretty bad if you are barely getting reception. 4g only needs weak reception and still load webpages fast. I'm guessing people who are happy with 3g reception have always a strong signal in an area where their tower doesn't get congested. When you can buy phones nowadays for less than $50 with 4g reception it seems silly to put up with such a compromise.
