    Can it be unlocked?

    • Yes it can, but I don't know how much. The manual says to contact Telstra.

I haven't tried this, but worth a go.

      1. Activate SIM.
      2. Call Telstra
      3. Mention you are going overseas on business
      4. Ask them to unlock so you can use the modem with a local SIM.
      5. Say thank you.
      6. Hang up phone.
      • Thanks bro!

      • Did they mention about charging?

      • +2

No mercy. I called them. Tried via chat too.
        Less than 6 month $80.00
        6-24 months $25.00
Free unlock after 24 months only.
If anyone tried and worked please let me know.
        Thanks .

damn i bought it for 39$ last week

  • +5

I bought this today at DSE in-store which was also $29 in its catalogue - I'm assuming OW is just playing catch up today!
    To answer some posts -
    1. The modem is unlockable for free under kinda scrupulous methods.
    2. I just activated a couple of hours ago and got 3GB included. YMMV as I linked it with an existing Telstra acct. The box didn't have any included data specified.

    • Thanks man! :)

    • Whats the expiry on the data - 30days?

      • Yep.

    • I'm hoping to do this, what telstra mobile plan/account have u linked? Data share possible? Cheers

      • I linked it to a year old inactive prepaid mobile broadband acct from a previous deal. i haven't tried data share, though - i'm not that well versed in it but I don't think it's applicable to mobile broadband?? (probably wrong on that)

  • Anyone know if it's possible to get a data sharing sim when you are on prepaid freedom plus and use it with one of these?

  • Odd, I got refunded as soon as i placed an order for pickup. Is anyone else having the same problem?

    • Not here. Though I did order a few hours ago.

Might be worth calling the store.

      • hmmm, I think it's a problem with officeworks accepting paypal payments. The invoice I was sent via paypal was blank.

Sooo I just went and picked up at OW, good thing they had it in stock.

  • Might get DSE to price match O/W on the 4G USB modem of Telstra's…$24.50 instead of $50. Don't need it to act as a shared internet device like pocket wifi, as it works out best for my backup home internet scenario - and also allows me to use my aging gift voucher.

  • Any one had any way to unlock?

    • Check the comments above.

      • http://tools.texby.com/unlock-codes/zte/ This did not work at all as it need 16 digit code. But the link provide 12 digits.
"unlockable for free under kinda scrupulous methods." Most of the google result end up the dc-unlocker version ending 460. That did not work at all. New version required which I could not find in net. But if you download from dcunlocker website, it detect the modem but you need to pay some $$$.

        • How much $$$

        • the 0460 version actually works. tried it myself.

        • @GaelicAU: I did not try. Need to buy 7 credits for that, and its more than 10USD.

I unlocked thro Ebay. (International seller) It worked be. Cost $5.51 (Still showing as pending amount. Could go up little bit) But as per the Allenhori, it works for 460 version. Not sure What happened to me.

  • Searching on eBay for 'MF90 Unlock' shows a few results for around $6.35 AUD.

  • What's the main differences between this and something like the Advanced 4G II?

  • Anyone been to the QV store ? Or know what limited stock means? Does it mean they have more than 1 or could it mean they are completely sold out ??

    • Could very well be, best to call and check.

    • DSE are selling for the same price if you have no luck at QV

Warning - Please do not use DC un-locker, it instantly damage the modem driver file right after i started the dc program and ended up my computer is not detecting the modem as a drive ( if you have inserted micro sd card )

And the driver files they provided are unable to fix the error too.

I did an exchange for this modem and faced the same problem now.

    • as soon as you install the driver provided by telstra you will not be seeing the "drive" again. you can however put a micro SD card in and use it as a drive.

      • Unfortunately this is actually the problem, the micro SD card is in and cant use it as a drive though i have managed to unlock the network.

  • +1

ok i fixed the problem. Disable diagnostic port and the removable drive will be detected. Cheers.

  • finally got it unlocked using 0460

    • Please share with us how you do it. Just bought one. Many thanks.

younmay use the "special" version of dc-unlocker. You will probably need the latest version of it tool just for installing the drivers.
        Generally you will need to:

        1. Download dc-unlocker, you can google "dccrap" to find the downloads. I got mine in a google drive link on the first page.
        2. Download the MF90 driver from dc-unlocker's website in the tutorial section. Tutorial can be accessed by click the grey button on their home page. The driver download link is on the top of the MF90 tutorial.
        3. Insert a non-Telstra SIM card, turn on the device and connect it to the USB. You should at least see a new device under Network Adapter in your windows device manager.
        4. Open up dc-unlocker and click the magnify glass icon, you should see the Network Adapter thing disappear and a new "modem" and 3 other devices showing under "other devices" in the device manager.
5.right click the "ZTE WCDMA technology msm" and manually update the driver using the driver you have downloaded. If you encounter error saying the driver's corrupted, Google "disable driver signature enforcement" for your version of Windows and restart your windows with "driver signature enforcement" disabled then install the driver.
        5. Once installed you should be able to auto detect the device in dc-unlocker. Try using the latest version if the auto detect not working in the cracked version, write down the application and diagnosis port numbers.
        6. Paying dc-unlocker to buy 7 credits or using the cracked version of the program, choose "Unknown ZTE modem" the select the port which you have just written down, do a scan, it should detect the device now. Under the unlock section, click Unlock, it takes a few seconds to do the task.
        7. Your device should restart once done. Disable the diagnosis port in dc-unlocker. Unplug the device, open up battery cover, hold the reset button for over 10 seconds, I did this because I couldn't log in after unlocking the device.
9 connect the device again, open 192.168.0.1 from your browser, enter default password "password" to log in, the device should not ask you to enter unlock code anymore. Congratulations you have unlocked it.

I'm not responsible if you brick your device or got any loss by doing this, but happy to discuss if you encounter any problem.

        • Didnt manage to crack it using cracked version. It needs to logon the server. Should have saved 7 euro.

        • Many thanks for your detailed instructions.

        • @TheMatrix:
          Welcome mate

        • @spedohero: Sorry, I don't understand what you're saying. How did it cost money, when you didn't pay for the software?

        • @realfamilyman:

Because I didn't manage to unlock it using cracked version hence I paid to buy credits using the service.

        • @spedohero: Oh ok, thanks…

I thought people were unlocking it that way.

Now I have another dilema, which I'll post at the bottom \/ if anyone can help.

        • Thanks…took me a while but finally got this method to work

        • Just coming back to this thread to say that I eventually was able to unlock my device using this guide for the most part. Thank you very much.

        • I would like to share my experience. In first place it did not work for me. So I end-up paying to an ebay seller around $6.00 for unlock.

I bought another one for my brother. Most of the google result says DC-Unlocker wont detect if it is WIN 10. Then I tried with an WIN 7 PC. At first attempt it didnt work.

          1. Windows will identify as a storage. And you cant change the driver.
          2. Install the DC-unlocker from their website and try search as Manufacture: Zte modems, and Model: MF 90, press the search button
          3. Now in device manager, 3 unknown devices will show. Update with the driver which is downloaded from DC-Unlocker website.
          4. Now try with DCCRAP software.

          It worked for me.

  • Would this work with Aldi mobile?

  • Just bought one and activate today. It give you 3Gb of data with 30 expiry. Telstra also offer a recharge of $50 for 5Gb with 1 year expiry and unused data roller over as well. I am thinking if I recharge this with a $50 (5Gb), I would get a total of 8Gb (5+3 roll over) with one year expiry. Is this the best way or anyone has a better idea? I mainly use it when we are out in the country where Optus has no network coverage (I use my phone for my daily mobile data need).

    • yes, same here… i was either thinking:

      1. telstra $140 for 16gb (2 yr expiry)
      2. unlock modem (ebay) and go on optus $130 for 22gb (2 yr expiry)

unless there are some better deals… i dont mind if its just 3G data

      • what do you mean by unlock modem?

        • its a telstra wifi modem, will need to unlock to use a non-telstra sim

  • Can anyone please confirm, if this will need a Standard, Micro and Nano SIM card? I have a corporate service with Standard size SIM and I'd like to use this device without cutting the SIM card to a smaller size.

  • Kind of new to all this. Can someone please tell me…

I have a USB wireless modem/dongle with an Optus SIM card inside. If I put that SIM card into this device instead, does that mean I can access the internet, using Wi-Fi on my smartphone?

    • That is correct. This device supports upto 10 wifi connections, so multiple devices can access the internet via this device at any one time (i.e. wife's tablet, your laptop, kids mobile phone etc.)

  • Kind of related to my question above…

You can use a second smartphone to do the same thing this modem does, right? Because I'm looking in my Android phone settings, and there's two options I can activate:

    1. Portable Wi-Fi hotspot
    2. Bluetooth tethering

So if I understand this correctly, what's the benefit of having a pocket modem?

What I'm thinking is, why not buy a cheap second smartphone instead… They are 2-3 times thinner so it's less bulk. And it means you have a spare phone. e.g. If your first phone only has one SIM slot, you now have two. Or things such as the Hungry Jacks Shake & Win app. i.e. If you don't like what you get on one phone, try on the second one.

    • could be more, could be +ves and -ves for both, but

      • this thing is smaller than a smartphone
      • battery life (however i havent tested battery life of a smartphone used purely as a hotspot)
      • cheaper than a smartphone
      • Hm, ok. Thanks.

I was thinking of the $40 phone that's come up a couple of times in recent months. Y550, or something like that.

I only looked at the measurements quickly - but thought this sounded 2/3 times thicker than a phone. But it's only 5mm difference to the Y550.
