  • The $35 plan is actually pretty damn good…

    • I think for the $35/$45 Optus only has 24 month plans?

In that case TPG is a better deal at $40

      OPTUS: Year 1 = 402.5; Year 2 = 540 - TOTAL 942.5 (and bound for 2 years?)

      TPG VODA Offer - $39.99 x 24 TOTAL $959.76 (no contract?)

So for 72 cents a month extra; I would like that extra one GB thank you plus I am not bound by a contract and can switch when I like :)

EDIT: Big difference for me: No international calls or SMS with TPG :( I will have to look elsewhere.. the 150 mins from Optus are good but 24 months :( (Funny Voda is giving this inclusion for its own post paid customers)

  • +1

Looks a great deal… Just trying to work out whether I can move to this deal on multiple sim for the family….

  • +1

Hell yeah, all ya can eat calls SMS, 4 gb and some international

  • How do they know if we're porting from TPG?

    • porting internetwork will automatically port the number provided the details are correct. with respect to intra-network, the company will have to get that number specifically released from the carrier. hope that helps

      • can I get this the same deal if I am porting from vodafone straight away ?thanks,

        • i have no idea. i assume not, but i'm only associated because my partner works for optus and it won't let me unselect it.

        • @chaibones:
          Thanks.

Does this mean leave anytime for free? or I am missing something?

    • Silly question :)

      • +3

No such thing as a silly question

        • +1

          So silly me then :)

    • so $2 voda sim from Coles and then port yes? Would that serve as TPG?

  • +5

Ok, u do realise tpg will be porting all current services from Optus to vodaphone as part of the new agreement…

That's why there so desperate to keep these services with them..

    • +6

Ok by me, they should all fight more often. And tried Voda before, completely useless, they could give me all the data in the world but ya need coverage, Optus online offer seems to be the best right now, no contract anyway

      • My issue with Voda has rarely been coverage, I would get 4 or 5 bars but drop outs and slow data. The idea of them getting some serious back haul is appealing.
This Optus deal looks good though ( I am on Telechoice which uses Telstra).

    • +1

thanks, I didn't realise that. But I already get heaps of random dropouts on TPG/Optus (maybe 3-4 a week), so I'd be intereseted to know if it's an optus network fault, my phone or the sim.

Plus I'm on grandfathered TPG plan that is $30 that does everything I need. 4G might be nice, but I rarely think my data too slow.

      • Never had any issues with TPG. Knew them as B mobile!

  • +1

how about any deal from tpg to keep existing customer with them? i heard they will move customers by batches, and offer increase data if we agree.

oh i wish this optus offer another plan like $25 with 2GB.. 1 too small, 4 too many. and no need unlimited calls/smses

  • So what if we don't agree to move?

    • +1

Then you won't get the benefit of this Optus deal? You will stay on your existing plan until TPG withdraw it. They haven't said how long that will be.

      • +1

So basically with TPG it is who knows when!

        • Sure, but if you are an existing customer you are on the same deal as last month so no need to do anything if you like it - unless this Optus deal is appealing!

  • +13

Title should read "…for TPG Mobile customers…"

I am a TPG (broadband) customer, but don't qualify for this deal.

  • When I'm looking at the website it seems that it's only for 12 months not 18 months, am I missing something/

Also How long do we have to stay in this contract for? What if I want to leave straight after the tpg period is up. Can I?

    • There is no contract if you opt for sim only. Where did you get the 18 months from?

      • I read it for a year and a half but it needs a comma.

  • Damn I'm with TPG and my bill cycle only started yesterday for the month. currently paying $19.99 for $500 talk/text + 1gb data (3g)

    • +1

you should switch asap. once you go black, i mean 4g youll never want to go back to 3g and you get unlimited calls/text

    • Im with the same plan, wut do?

      • +2

I'd wait and see what TPG offer you to switch over to Vodafone.

The new TPG on Vodafone plans are public for all to see and they're similar value to what you're currently getting so worst case is you end up with pretty much what you currently have which is a decent deal. There aren't many plans with 1GB data + voice/SMS included for $20/month.

        But potential upside:

        1. TPG wants to keep you so they may well throw in some bonus to entice you to migrate.

        2. Optus also wants to keep you as evidenced by the current offer. As TPG migrates customers to Vodafone Optus may get even more desperate and improve the offers.

320,000 customers is a huge revenue hole for Optus. Consider if those customers are on average $20/month, and $15/month of that goes to Optus. That's nearly $5 million/month or $60m/year worth of revenue that's potentially walking out the door.

      • Exactly.. I wonder how many would be dumb enough, and take the "first month" bait.

  • +2

Same price as TPG. No international calls. I can make international calls with TPG. Normally every month I make approximately $350 (out of $500) woth of international call.

Dont make local calls more than $150 a month so unlimited calls isnt worth for me. HOwever good deals for others who make lots of local calls.

    • +1

Well TPG will be kicking you off if you don't get off.

    • +1

the $35 plan includes 150 mins a month to selected countries

  • should also mention $5 is for optus broadband customers otherwise its $10

  • I would say vodafone network after recent 4G expansion is much better than optus network

  • +6

but TPG charges 11$ porting fees AND the prepayment amount of $20 will be forfeit!
is there another way around it?

    • +2

Prepayment of the $20 deposit WILL be refunded, but expect to have to first refer the matter to the TIO after initial refusal. Whirlpool had discussion about this when I ported out a couple of TPG numbers when they upped their prices. The refusal was reversed very promptly when the TIO was brought into the mix (and in hindsight, it MAY also be possible to avoid the porting fee if they are forcing changes onto you).

      • i had to forfeit 20$ when i port my first number from TPG to Vaya. Now I'm thinking of either canceling my second number or to transfer to Optus. Will i be able to get my $20 prepayment back if i was to cancel the service? because I've been advised that i won't get it back (not even use it to pay off my ADSL bill)

        • TPG will probably refuse to refund the $20. So do what you want to do, ask for the $20 back and assuming they then refuse, make a complaint to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman.

TPG will then refund the money.

        • @ozguy: they said it was in the terms and condition when signing up and also on the paper that was sent with the sim card. he also said to make a complain if i wish.

        • @tonyhuang981:

Depends when you signed up. When this happened to me I happily still had my original paperwork which showed the T&Cs at the time didn't say that, AND I hadn't signed any updated T&Cs since.

  • Thanks Op.
Should I get the Note 5 or Sony Z5 ?

    • -2

Sony has yet to catch up in mobile phones area.

      • +1

Have you seen their new Sony Z5 premium? Includes a 4K Screen with a 23MP camera

        • All well and good to have a 4K screen, but it can only be used for viewing video. Won't be supported outside that. I'd recommend the normal Z5.

      • For what it's worth my 3 year old Xperia Z1 is already on the latest version of Lollipop (5.1.1) while all my friends with various Galaxy S4, S5, etc. have only just received 5.0.x not long ago.

I'll take a Sony over a Samesong any day.

  • My number is currently with Telstra prepaid.
Can I port to TPG (not contract) then take on this deal?
    When does this deal expires?

    • I don't see why not, but your minimum charge for the first month would be $30.

    • +2

I don't think it worth the hassle to do it !

      • You save $10 per month for 24 month?

    • Or you could call Optus ask if they will give this offer even though you are with Telstra. They might honour it.

  • My family been with TPG for year but they no Vodaphone Coverages. Went is the move???

  • There's nothing in the terms and conditions about actually having to be an tpg customer…

  • +1

What happens after 12 months? Do you lose the $10 discount?

  • Both the $20 and $35 plans are great value for unlimited calls

  • There needs to be a link to the CIS that applies to this plan.

I can't determine if the data is 1MB or 1kB increments. This makes a BIG difference.

  • +1

I have been with TPG for the past 5+ years on their $15 per month plan that gives me $500 local and $500 international calls along with 1.5gb data on 3G. They stopped offering this to new customers and changed it to $20 per month with $500 talk/text + 1gb data but since we've been on the original plan since the start they let us stay on it. However they also brought out data down to 1gb per month from 1.5gb and in this day and age 1gb is simply not enough. I've been looking around to switch but wasn't too keen on paying nearly double of what I'm paying now but the $35 per month one with 4gb data and unlimited calls/texts looks bloody fantastic.

I was planning on waiting for Optus to release their Nexus 6P phone + plan but this offer seems too good to pass up. I'm now leaning on buying the Nexus 6P outright and go with the $35 plan. Not sure which would be better, any advice?

    • +2

I would suggest waiting a few weeks and see what the market brings. Optus would surely keep their TPG offers out for at least a month…

Post the iphone launch rush, leading into christmas, we should see some good deals for all the carriers.

      • Below taken from the member facilities page…

"Existing TPG Mobile wishing to switch to the new TPG plans?

Please remain patient as we will be sending you a special invitation and bonus offer to move over to our new plans on the Vodafone network.

For those customers who don't wish to wait for our special invitation and bonus offer, a change of plan facility will be made available in the next 2 weeks - please check back later."

    • I was in a similar boat to you. Been with TPG for 4 years or so and was on their $20 plan and it was nice that it included international calls but I was going over the 1GB limit.

Recently switched to Lebara and I haven't had any issues with it since. I'm talking about the $29.90 plan (unlimited talk/text, 2.5 GB, KB billing) that is currently half price for the first month (http://www.lebara.com.au/30-day-plans). They also offer a 2GB bonus if you top up on a 6 or 12 month. The 12 month plan is $300 so effectively it works out to be $25 per month.

So unlimited talk/text + 4.5GB data (3G, KB billing) for $25 month. That's incredible value to me. YMMV

      • -1

        But no 4G

        • Indeed, as indicated in parentheses.

    • +1

How did you manage that? I was on the same plan as you but then they automatically put me on the $20 plan with no choice of staying on the $15 one. I have been with them since '09. Damn I feel ripped!

      • I think it was because our home broadband was with TPG along with 3 mobile plans (me and my parents). We've been with them since 2009 as well. I guess they thought we'd leave if they changed us to the $20 one (which we would have).

        • I was in the exact same position as Pizdets! everything has been with TPG since 2006 (well started out as soul and then they got bought out circa 2008). They said they moved everyone, plus they changed us to MB billing. Either way leaving TPG for my broadband and mobile as well, they are too sneaky and requires diligent monitoring of their bills. Sister and parents moved over already just myself left.

  • Is the 4G better than Telstra 4G? AFAIK no Optus 4G in Canberra outer suburbs

    • get yourself a vodafail sim card and check 4g coverage around canberra where you go. You will be surprised where is better than oparse and hel$tra. but not all areas

  • +5

My first post here… just thought id share i moved from optus to vodafone a few months ago (had a few network issues followed by poor helpdesk experiences) and all i can say is it has been fine except for when i go through st leonards/waverton/wollstonecraft stations in sydney it can stuff up, the train goes lower than the surrounding geography i think and they must not have a tower reaching down there for 4G as it drops right down to 3G or even 2G…something anyway…… i can only say for me their bad wrap is a thing of the past and no reflection of reality today (inner sydney). if you see whirlpool forums you'll see there is no more loathing of vodafone than their is of optus either. so as far as networks go i would say vodafone is easily on par with optus, some places better, barring specific areas if you dont have a tower covering you or whatever. i actually found out the hard way too that vodafone do regional roaming onto optus network. for me it didnt switch over automatically for some reason, which was highly annoying at the time, but once i selected Optus R or whatever it is in network settings it attached. this was in northern qld but might help someone.

If i was you TPG guys i would stay put, see what offer TPG gives you, try voda 4G network for yourself and if you aint happy then im sure Optus or Virgin would snap you up with a deal to get a little TPG revenge anyway :D

    • +1

Try a holiday in Tasmania where places like Strahan, Port Arthur and the whole east coast have no Voda coverage at all. Voda have 700 employees in Hobart, bet the majority of them have Telstra mobiles.

      • Yep, but unless things have changed drastically there's not much optus reception either. Through the major towns down the east coast you'll find reception but it's definitely patchy. Tasmania isn't exactly representative of most of Australia though..

You'll find most people in regional area will have Telstra because of its increased coverage but you do pay for that.

  • +1

I know a couple of people on the grandfathered TPG PAYG $1/month plan . Anyone know what will happen to these plans? I have looked around but can't seem to find an answer. Maybe it hasn't been decided yet.

    • I've got 2 SIMs on the same $1/month plan. Keen to find out as well…

    • That's what I'm on too. I'm kinda nervous they'll boot me off it.

But also I think they were dodgy and overcharging me. I get warnings for using up 50% when I never turn my data on. I have a second sim for all data, and the data usage register on my phone confirms I have used no data on the TPG sim.

  • +1

wait with this, TPG is likely to give us 4G right? to hell with this offer, I'm sticking with TPG cz I already have a lucrative deal there :) Thanks though op :)

  • Is only $5 when you are an Optus broadband customer which brings it down to $10, hence $5 after the 50% off first month. Otherwise is $20 monthly and $10 after the 50% off first month offer

Please make a note of it in the first post

Is this offer.optus.com.au site being hijacked or something, click anything on the site will jump to a survey site then mybitwave.com

    • +6

site looks clean to me. sounds like your browser is jacked, give it a good scan with some malware scanners.

    • +1

Does indeed sound like your PC has malware on it.

  • Jump on this or wait for better deal from competitors?

  • I am on some TPG plan. I think i pay $20 a month. I rarely use the phone.

    This $20 optus deal:
    1gig data, unlimited talk/text.
    Is 1 gig data typical?

  • it is an extraordinary bold outcome, clearly. An industry revolution! It's like all other plans were 100MB before this offer came along. /s

  • I have an old phone with my TPG plan. Would Optus give me a good phone to change over?

  • Just confirmed with care the TPG discount is actually after the 50% off

So the posters original price is actually correct (for the first month)

    $30 plan /1gb /unlimited sms& calls = $5 for first month then $20 month for next 11 months

    $45 plan /4gb / unlimited sms& calls /150 mins int calls= $12.50 for first month then $35 month next 11 months

The $45 plan looks pretty good……wonder if Telstra will do anything?

  • Which phone is best value for money?

    • Not iPhone

  • +2

For average phone user & reliable coverage, my vote still goes to Boost $20 Ultra Telstra 4G, 1GB data / unlimited sms / 100 mins talk + extra 500MB data on Sundays.

  • +1

Although tempted to switch to another Optus service provider (or even optus) to avoid changing to many factors the biggest issues we have had to date with TPG are:

    1) The worst customer service, where they push the view that the customer is wrong no matter what the problem or how obvious the cause is. The number of incidents we are having with TPG (both mobile and Internet) also seems to be increasing so customer service is becoming more important these days.

    2) Faulty cell towers in our area (configuration or other issues) with three towers in my area having known faults logged against them. They have not been addressed by optus and have been lodged for months or longer. These faults appear to impact not just network service but also costing due to the impact on data session disconnection / re-connections cycles.

So my question: With a focus on issue 2, as Optus provides the underlying service for this ozbargain deal how would moving directly to Optus be any better than just hopping off to another network provider?

  • Am i reading this right?

    As a TPG customer, I will pay $30 - $10 optus tpg 12 month discount - $10 optus home broadband customer discount = $10/month.

    • I think only if you have not claimed the $10 broadband discount yet

  • So $10 saving per month for 24 months?

    • 12.

      • Locked in contract for 12 months.
        That is pretty good :-)

  • +1

Just be aware going into this that if you're expecting anything beyond scripted responses from staff for any issue, you will be sorely disappointed and mighty frustrated at the lack of ownership of issues by Singtel.

    • +1

      @ 086

Singtel (optus) really need to realise that this lack of customer service is costing them big time.

In the last six months i have had issues with Telstra and Voda and both have been sorted without major dramas.

Speaking to Optus CS is the epitome of frustration. (unless by some miracle you can get someone in OZ)

Only way around it i can see is do the facebook/twitter bizo to shame them.

Keep records of all convos !

      ah thats better…
