pm me with email for code if by any chance you want this overpriced pos.

    • +4

In that case, you should be discouraging others to purchase it, instead of offering the code.

  • +2

A 25% discount makes it a reasonable price for one of the more capable portable gaming machines out there.
I'm not going to buy it, so PM if you want a code.

    • It's not 'more capable', just capable at best. There are many 'more capable' gaming laptops out there. I'm also worried about 4-cell, isn't it usually 6?

      • +5

Does it matter how many cell it has? No laptop can survive gaming session without plugging in.

        • It does. When you aren't gaming, 2 hours and 4 hours battery life is a big difference

  • +3

    So much hate on Alienware.

Can anyone give an alternative for similar pricing?

    • +3

Metabox, Clevo are well liked in the Ozbargain community. Good value for great specs :)

      • +1

could you recommend a particular model?

        • +6

@inusure: Thanks. Just found that page.

Only reason I asked is I nearly didn't buy my Alienware Alpha last year because of peoples opinions but it's one of the best purchases I've made IMO.

        • thanks

        • @inusure: That clevo model only uses a 950m. Performance wise the Alienware 860M is better in every way.

        • +2

@inusure: I don't disagree that Alienware is overpriced, but that's not a fair comparison. 15" vs 13" and a worse GFX card.

        • @inusure: Thats a 15", huge by comparison.
Not that it makes any difference to me, I just bought a 17.3" for my gaming needs.

You guys can try to ask for a small discount at Metabox, i heard they are pretty nice.
But of course, I'm not saying my recommendations are better than Alienware option (espcially, when its on sale, like this). Just want to give u guys options and choices.

        • +3

          @inusure:
          Missing OS
          Similar GPU
Quad (although Haswell) instead of Dual CPU
          Extra 8GB of RAM

Costs roughly $200 more when you add in Windows

Alienware is actually good for the price, there's just a lot of bias because of the brand name

        • @bentan77:
          Thanks, bro.

Like i just mentioned( Maybe 10 seconds before u posted ^^), its just more options for us.

        • +1

          @inusure:

          Nice specs,

I just picked up a refurbed (though for all intents & purposes it is brand new - not a blemish anywhere) Toshiba P50t, the only difference being not having an SSD and an R9 M265X DDR5 2GB graphics set up…but it only cost $780.

        • @inusure: How is the warranty service and do people usually buy extra warranty?

        • @inusure:

Just a FYI, the build quality on this machine, especially where the hinge on the LCD panel screws onto the back LCD cover is terrible. 100% failure rate. The hinge in general on this machine is extremely weak and will be damaged within the span of 6-12 months and will require replacement. Add that the W230 is constantly loud and hot, and the paint fades away quite easy; you have a poorly built machine that I absolutely do not recommend. Alienware is the easy choice in this matter.

    • Don't forget you can save $75 buy buying JB gift cards at woolies using discounted CasRewards woolies vouchers to bring it down to $1423.

      An alternative for $1514:
From the Dell website with the Cashrewards coupon you get the new version of this laptop for $1602 with the new 6th gen processor i5-6200U and the 960M video card using the cashrewards 15% coupon.
With the 5.5% cashback that comes down to about $1514 (possibly $1535 if the cashback doesn't include taxed component). Even cheaper if you don't need the 256gb SSD upgrade.

  • Last gen GPU? Aren't they up to 900 series?

    • +2

Yes. I think this is clearance. Updated 13in on Alienware website has 960m and Intel 6th gen CPU.

      • Do you know how much the updated model is?

    • This should still be Maxwell (current)

    • yea but from what people are saying the gtx860 and gtx960m are the same cards just the 960 is overclocked a bit you can read articles on it.

  • Anyone know if there are other brands out there that have something similar to the Alienware Graphics Amplifier port? I like the idea of a laptop that can also be as powerful as a desktop computer.

    • Yes, many more got announced recently, the only other one on the market is one by MSI

  • +1

Don't buy this, the gpu is old, cpu i7 5500u only score 7.1 at cpu boss, there are heaps of other brand out there cheaper with better spec.

    • In a 13"?

    • +2

Link another 13" laptop with better specs for the same price?
The GPU isn't old as GM107 is still used in the 900 series and it's a 13" laptop, most manufacturers will put only dual cores in them because of heat/power.

      • See below. Newer Dell version for about $15 more.

  • +1

I agree this model and spec is slightly overpriced. If this is 1000 then it is acceptable but 1.5k there are plenty of other machines that can perform better

    • +1

Not really, not in a 13" with 17 and 860m / 960m Maxwell GPU for the price.

You can certainly do better (I recently bought a 17" version with 970m and i7 quad core refurb for $1800), but for a small gaming machine, this is pretty good.

      • Also to note, a big thing is venting/fan cooling design. A lot of gaming laptops look nice and slim, but just overheat and dont last more than a year. Alienware and Asus G series at least have some good ventalation design which can help with these issues.

  • +2

    The Good:
    i7
Maxwell (current) GPU (not 100%, but the 2gb version usually are)
The size (if you like small)
The ability to add an external GPU

    The Bad:
i7 is a U version, not quad core
Its likely to throttle on many games, the 17" versions do and they have a lot more space for proper heat management
Why get a laptop with a good GPU, only to strap it to a desktop GPU? I would want no GPU for weight and external amp with lower price tag…

Alienware are not as overpriced as they used to be, but I think the quality is diminishing.
i happened to buy a 17" Dell refurb last week, I bought it as Dell refurbs are often well priced, I don't love or hate the brand.

  • Is this decent enough for video editing? Still looking for a decent video editing laptop for travel. What's better? Alienware or Asus ROG?

And finally, does anyone have the voucher they can email me as I'll most likely make the purchase.

  • This certainly isn't too bad a price for those specs. Be aware of course that it has a performance disadvantage compared to the 15" and 17" Alienware models, which have a GTX 970M graphics card and are quad core rather than dual core. (My own laptop is an AW bought for a discount, and I'm happy with it - probably the best laptop I've owned. Alienware is great if you can bring the price down from RRP by 25%!)

  • +1

As an Alienware owner I loved my laptop pre Windows 10. Post upgrade is a different story. It's a mess

  • Question is really, what is the point of a 13" gaming laptop?

I can understand 13" for work or uni, but otherwise I really don't understand. You can get a 15" or 17" laptop with much better specs, and it won't have all the issues a small laptop is going to have such as how the (profanity) does such a slim laptop deal with its gpu heat properly

    • only thing I can see is maybe ease of portability and plugging into TV in loungeroom for Steam games on the couch…but then Steam Link is only a few months away so…

      • haha, in that scale, a 15 or 17 inch laptop is just as portable

    • +1

I wonder what the point of a gaming laptop is period. ITX builds are much better, assuming size is your interest, and come in at cheaper or similar prices with much better specs. You could probably buy an average work/Uni laptop & build a decent ITX gaming rig for the same price as some of these gaming laptops.

  • The GTX 860M is probably 2 years old now.

  • I constantly stalk gaming laptops (guilty pleasure of mine) and as with all gaming machines, the graphics card is the key. If you are seriously considering this you might find this comparison useful. The difference between 960M and 860M isn't that dramatic drastic if the 860M uses the updated architecture (Maxwell). If it uses the Kelper then I'd avoid this deal spending this much money on relatively dated tech.

    Graphics card Overall performance (Ultra-preset)
    GeForce GTX 980M +104 %
    GeForce GTX 970M +64 %
    GeForce GTX 965M +15 %
    GeForce GTX 960M Base
    GeForce GTX 860M Maxwell -8 %
    GeForce GTX 860M Kepler -17 %

    • yea its maxwell you can easily gain that difference by overclocking depending on heat

  • This was $1199 on the DELL outlet yesterday, I didn't post it because I didn't know if it was a good deal or not? Heres a link to the specs.

    http://doutlet.xyz/Devices/DeviceInspector.aspx?DeviceID=DFO…

They are refurbs… but DLEL refurbs are apparently very high quality, and $300 cheaper! (They're all sold now, this is a historical snapshot).

(Full disclosure,I own and operate the above site, they were catagorized incorrectly into the OptiPlex catagory). If I see any more for that price I'll be sure to post a deal :)

  • Got this a while back, with the i5-5200U a while back (probably 6-7months) for around $1300 I think. Pretty happy with it, performs every day tasks with ease, battery life is pretty good (easy 6 without using the nvidia gfx). Gaming it gets pretty hot and very loud (fan seems to go to max and never stop).

  • Can anyone get onto JB website?

It's just not loading at all for me. Used two different machines and got nothing.

    • Try a different web browser, I used to have the same problem.

      • Tired that and didn't work.

Eventually was able to get on about an hour later.

        Very strange.

  • +1

This is a clearance product with the old CPU and video card.
For an extra $15 I would rather get the newer faster model given this is gaming laptop.

That being said I believe you can use the 5% JBGift cards through woollies from CashRewards to bring it down to $1423.

    • +3

Can someone please explain why you are down voting my comment.
I have shown a much better alternative for $15(1%) more and have given a way for people to save $75 if they choose to go ahead with OP's deal

      • +1

i dont know why u were down voted, so i up voted u.

        • thanks, I appreciate it. I thought I was doing something wrong.

      • +1

        +1 from me :)

  • Check Dell website. old 15 models are free upgrade to GT980M until Thursday.

  • Does anyone have a spare code that they're not using?
May be getting a new laptop from JB in the coming weeks :)
Please send me a PM! Much appreciated!
