Apple MacBook Pro MF839X/A Retina 13" 128GB SSD $1620 @ Officeworks (RRP Now $1999?)

280

Ok so haven't actually checked the news but I'm guessing Apple just increased the price of the base model 13" Retina? I checked last night to do a quick comparison and it was $1799 online - making $1620 about 10% off. Just checked on the Apple website and it seems like the base starts at $1999? Google shows $1799 as the price

http://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro?afid=p238%7…

https://www.google.com.au/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=…

Haven't seen any adverts showing 10% on Macs at Officeworks - I've only checked this model. Maybe these are now the normal prices now? just like 20% of iTunes gift cards (excluding $20)

Popped into Officeworks yesterday, no sale stickers but price was the same as online.

UDPATE - Seems Harvey Norman have been the first retailer to put their prices up to Apple pricing.

UPDATE 2:20pm AEST Now unavailable online. Need to check in store for stock.

Also since the post I've a had terrible time with Officeworks Customer Service. very very poor. Had two cards be declined, due to reasons unknown bank said the transaction went through fine and the second one because OW staff couldn't get my Expiry date right and they blamed my bank. Yeah awesome work guys!

    Same price at TGG http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/apple-macbook-pro-with-retina-…

Would be nice if TGG listed it on ebay so people could get a further 20% off.

    • Was just about to update my post with the TGG :) thanks. Seems like Apple hiked up the price last night. Was actually looking to buy this as it was like the price went up on the Apple website.

    • i believe i read somewhere that Apple controls the discounting of their products, and i think its set at around 10% … so i wouldn't be surprised if they just aren't allowed to discount it by 20% .. :)

      • -2

Gotta keep a premium price for a "premium" product, made by premium chinese kids

      • +1

No, that is not correct. That kind of corporate behaviour is actually illegal. They way they work is to provide very small margins for the retailer to start with, so discounting more than a certain amount will lead to a loss. Stocking Apple products is seen as a premium drawcard for an electronics shop, so the retailer accepts the smaller margins.

        • you just said the legal way of what i said…. :) . Either way it explains why apple stuff are NOT in this sale.

    • Thank you very much for sharing this info. I did not know about TGG before. I actually wanted 256GB one and from your link I found that TGG had the best price $1889 for 256GB version until Monday 19 Oct. Since prices went up in Apple store very unexpectedly, I decided that I will buy one today from TGG.

Yep Apple released new 4K iMac's, Apple Magic Mouse 2, Magic Trackpad 2 and Magic Keyboard early today morning, in doing so they have increased all their MAC's by $100 to $300, if you are after any MAC's hurry up and go buy them ASAP from TGG, office works harvey norman or JB HI FI before those guys increase to RRP prices

    • +1

Thanks for the update :) Not really into the Apple tech news so it was more so a coincidence that I was looking last night and just this morning ahha

  • +1

Yep - new iMacs today - so excuse for Apple to ramp up some of the other products as well unfortunately….
15" MBPs have gone up too - at first glance its seems they all have an extra $200 on them.

So to see how the pricing is here is the conversion on the top range 15 MBP:

    AU Price: $3799
    Less GST ($319) = $3480

Conversion to USD at ~0.722 = $2513 USD

Apple US price = $2499 USD

Difference = $14 USD more expensive here then in the US after taking into account GST and US sales taxes that would normally be added etc…

Oh well - I'll hold onto my 2014 model a bit longer then…

    • my first gen retina is still going strong, has had a battery replacement and lcd replacement and doesnt seem to want to give up.
im holding onto it too, no point buying the same machine with just a slighly faster CPU

      • +3

wow that's not an attitude apple would be happy with… they'll be sending someone around to your place to fix this issue. (he will likely be dressed in what looks like expensive homeless clothing and may have a beard - if he can grow one)… just joking apple ppl take it easy!!

Also your definition of going strong its a bit diff to mine..hehehe having to replace an lcd on a laptop kinda disqualifies it … hehehehehe (battery i understand :P)

        • had the ghosting issue which was common in the first gen LG screens

        • @tuzii: :) i was joking! understood.

    • Did you really pay $3799 for a laptop? I thought $2K is expensive. Got my HP Probook 470 from ebay for $900 and it meets all my requirements, I guess everyone requirements is different.

      • Well that's the most expensive model. I think most people would buy the macbooks that are around the ~$1500 mark.

  • +1

    Wow!

Glad I brought this very same model a couple of weeks ago at the old price using 10% at DSE in addition to paying with DSE giftcards with an extra 10% loaded on to it. Considered it a fail because I didn't get the TRS GST discount as the line was too long at the airport and I would have missed my flight but this makes me re-evaluate the whole thing.

    • Ugh, same thing happened to me 2 years ago. I'd just bought a new macbook and ipad, but the queue through both security and then TRS meant that I missed out on ~$180!

AND THEN the plan sat on the tarmac for 90 mins! UGH!

      • +1

I guess a 26.44% discount just wasn't meant to be at the time. Happy with 18 and now 25%. By co-incidence my jetstar flight was delayed 50 minutes while waiting for catering to arrive. I sure its a conspiracy by the Border Force to deny us our rightful GST refunds.

      • +2

FYI, when the line is really long you can fill out a "GST & WET REFUND" form and leave with TRS. They will process it a few weeks later rather than on-the-spot. They don't always make it known that you can do this, so if you're in a rush or the line is long it's worth asking for it. I did this in April and it saved me about an hour in line at Sydney.

  • Awesome!

Thanks mate. Not sure if I got that good of a deal but got the macbook air 13inch for $1197 by getting office works to pricematch. Going to claim GST back as well!

Oh forgot to mention, I got them to price match the good guys. Get in quick guys!

  • i've got one i need to get rid of (downgraded(slower) to 12" mb), how much would be a reasonable price to sell 2nd hand? looking at either ebay (high fees) or gumtree (insulting offers)

i found 128gb to still be enough, everything else is perfect in terms of features (sd card, ram, speed etc.)

    • How old is it? Location and condition? Reciept etc. Putting it up in the classifieds might work well here (people are always after Macs and you'll get LESS insulting offers here than Gumtree I would say)

      • ah didnt realise we have a classifieds here.

but yeh, SA and <1yr. perfect condition not a scratch i can find anywhere. only bought because i needed a portable lappy for an overseas trip for <1 month and the 12" wasnt out yet. used it sparingly since then but it's now been months since ive touched it.

i might try ebay/gumtree for a higher price, if desperate sell on here.

    • That 12" mb is so ugly

      • +4

actually i think its the most beyootifull model yet

        • I have one.. i think its great for what I need it for..
But at $1999 now its a bit pricey :/

        • +1

@ezza: yeah thats absolutely ridiculous. it's not worth 2k. its a bit slow (13" is faster but not as slim).

        • @insular:

I got mine price matched for around $1560 with office works… i think it was office works who had it priced at $1619 (or so some months ago)… really happy with it for general browsing/email/travel.. amazing piece of tech! except the USB-C annoys me at times given that's the only input port.

        • @ezza:

And today its $1620 at Goodguys, so $1539 with Office works price match!

Created a deal for all to see - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/215248

        • @ezza:

I would have to agree at that price, but for the price I would rather a Retina Macbook Pro haha

        • It looks good on the outside, but the inside? When i saw it in store, i couldn't believe apple made it. And that keyboard is the worst I've ever used

        • @mnermner: i thought the keyboard would be terrible, but it's not too bad.

as for the inside, the case isn't transparent. and all laptop internals are ugly. chips and transistors, yuck.

  • Not sure if I can help you there, but saw them yesterday at OW for around 1600 as well? so give or take a couple hundred, so maybe 1300?

    • what you mean 1300 its advertised as 1600 plus

      • I'd like to know which OW has them for 1300, I would get one for that!

        • Sorry guys that was meant to be a reply to insular's post about their used MB. Would be quite silly to post 1600 then comment with 1300 haha

  • +5

Seriously? The low end 13 Macbook pro costs $2k? The Surface book looks even better now.

  • Anyone understand the strategy of increasing the prices of their Macs? Usually when it comes to computers/phones/electricals when a new range comes out the older range are discounted not increased by 10%…

    • +4

It's an adjustment for the US to AUD price fluctuations. Apple updates their pricing once or twice a year and given our AUD isn't looking good, the prices have gone up.

App Store prices will also be going up by about 15%.

      • Yeah, so lucky for us to have gotten Apple gear for lower than the US dollar value when the Aussie was at 1.10. No, wait…

        • Prices were adjusted in those times, but still took into account GST. The App Store in particular was at parity for many of the pricing tiers it supports but hardware give or take a few percent was also basically equal to conversion rate +10% GST.

Certainly my 2011 MacBook Pro came out relatively well priced at the time.

  • DickSmith gonna have 10% off again this Tuesday (told by DSE staff), hoepfully their price not updated by then

    • Why wait on Tuesday? if you want the 5% price beat just go to OW and price match with TGG

      • because I still have the DS gift cards purchased from Coles with 10%, thousands worth. now if they jump the price of Macbook I would consider iMac 5K series since the prices are not much 'overpriced' plus newer keyboard and trackpad :)

      • looking at to get one. am i missing something when you're saying to price match with TGG? from the site its showing 1620 same price as OW

  • price went back to A$1,859.00 at apple store

    • +3

You are probably looking at the education pricing ("au-hed" in URL)

May I ask if they come with 1 year or 2 year warranty?

    • Would come with the standard 1 year Apple Warranty by default I would think, unless its changed?

    • +1

They come with a 1 year warranty from Apple, however under Australian consumer law, it is basically extended to 2 years.

I've had the same problem with OfficeWorks as the OP. Put my order in first thing this morning, two credit cards declined - Customer Service suggests I call my bank. I don't think so, different banks, cards have worked elsewhere - nothing wrong with the cards, still waiting for officeworks to call me back. They never contacted me to say there was a problem, no email to confirm the order even, nothing. Money has been debited off both cards, supposedly it will be refunded, and my order? I still don't know its status.

    • First time orders will take time as they go through security check. Hope u receive ur order

    • Yeh same problem here, had taken 3 attempts but finally got it! I have spoken to the bank and what was wrong was there had been recent fraud issues with people using stolen credits cards to make purchases at OW so it automatically blocks it in the first instance. They can temporary remove the block but if you try to use the same previously blocked credit card with the transaction, this time OW will block you cause they registered the previous block! So I was stuck in the viscous cycle of either the bank blocking the card or OW (I've tried 3 different cards but same result!). So what I did was to call up the bank in advance and remove the "merchant block" for OW PRIOR attempting the transaction, coz otherwise the whole cycle begins again. Oh and OW would refund u the amount, coz it happened to me twice for me. Hope it helps!

      • Once after banck removing the block, how to remove the block from OW to get the previously used card work? Thx

        • Call the 1300 OW number and tell them the situation. They should be able to remove the block from their side and provided you also remove it from the bank's side to prior the transaction, should go through.

        • @jaycee:

Actually complained multiple times about their service and lack of communication to the customer regarding rejected orders, didn't realise so many people on here experienced the same thing.

Anyways like above apparently once a card is blocked is cannot be used again, even through the phone.

I mean it takes like what a couple minutes to take money from my account yet it takes 24 hours to get it back. What is this, I was expecting some interest on my money! jokes!

  • TGG is now back to normal price. :'(

    • Officeworks is still at $1687.

  • I just hate OW, price matched a macbook 2 weeks ago n they rejected 2 of my cards twice each n i still waiting for the credit department guy to contact me, i doubted they do that to dodge price match, wtf!

    • Don't worry had the same experience. Absolutely BS - I gave up cause they don't seem like they give a damn.
