      • Seems as though a genuine dum dum question is a no-no :/

    • +1

Yeah there's some idiot down-voting folks for no apparent reason.

So back to your question, yes an SSD will work fine with the XPS 8500.

Here's a similar thread on Dell Support:
      http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t…

I'm assuming you would want to run Windows off it?

      • +2

Thank you omgwtfbbq, the computer has slowed down a bit so wondered if this would help.
Don't understand why genuine questions get negged, I thought communities were supposed to help each other.
        I don't understand computer workings - that's why I asked.

        Yes, running Windows.

        • You could either do a fresh windows install or try to clone your current drive.

    • Teach a man to fish etc…

The most common standard interface for connecting hard drives etc to motherboards since the mid 2000's has been Serial ATA (SATA). Learn more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

So if your mother board was produced between 2004 and now, chances are it will be compatible. If you're still not sure open it up and look for connectors like this somewhere on your motherboard http://bit.ly/1NUV7mX

Your current hard drive will be plugged into one of them (one cable will be SATA, one will be for power supply).

Ended up getting the 250GB version for $145 and stacking my cart with other click and collect items until it hit $200. Used my $50 voucher so essentially got those items for free and my first SSD!

  • Great deal! Would prefer a 1TB but since I'm going to pull my iMac apart for this with a high chance of failure, not over capitalising is probably best.

  • anyone created multiple accounts for multiple items?

  • +1

Whats the criteria for getting the $100 credit? Is there a minimum spend?
edit: Also, can I purchase 2 things from Futu or SE that total ~$280 and still receive the $100 credit?

Any links to T&C's would be great please, I can't seem to find them..

  • Sort of was waiting for a deal on this, I knew TA would come up with something sooner or later. Thanks TA.

  • +5

Wanted this one for a long time, this is a great deal but bad timing as I can't afford it right now.

    BRB selling my kidneys.

  • tightarse…you won't be offering pickup and shipping services to WA from Melbourne by any chance do you… =P

  • How long does it take to get the voucher?

So do we get emailed the $100 ebay voucher after we pay? Sorry still an ebay voucher virgin here…

  • Thanks TA! You're a legend!

Finally pulled the trigger on the 500GB EVO…still have 80GB left on my current 256GB Samsung PM830, but more storage headroom is always welcome, not to mention the higher performance of this drive

  • +1

Futu and shopping express same company?

    • +1

      Yes

    • Sure thing, they use the same domain .AU you see!

  • -1

Can i purchase this, then use the $100 voucher on this router: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/216014.

And then get another $100 voucher?

    • no and no. read the t&c

      • -2

Wait so i cant even use the $100 voucher on the router??

  • Thniking about getting the new XPS 15 ultrabook with HDD, then replace it with SSD.

Dell staff told me the laptop only support M2. Does this mean 850 Evo won't work in XPS 15?

    • +2

This SSD is SATA, im pretty sure there is an M2 version of this SSD but its not the one in the sale.

  • +1

Any known issues with evo 850?

    • +1

i think googling it will be the best choice for you mate!

  • Dang, no SA for the voucher. Boooourns

  • Aih sucks when these deals come up but i cant buy…as no use at all…using rmbp…

    • Slap it into a Thunderbolt / USB 3.0 external drive?

  • does the eBay credit automatically appear on your account from the 1st of Nov?

    • +1

It appears under your "my eBay", in a section called "vouchers".

      • Oh thanks buddy

  • What's the likelihood of actually getting this at the estimated click and collect date? For me that's this friday at my local BigW… if Futu is, in fact, shopping express… sometimes they take ages to even process the order, let alone ship it.

  • Bought one. Click and collect even though i dont have a use for it.

    Must be the ozbargain effect.

Buy now ask question what i can use it for later.

Definitely getting me a microsd card with the $100 ebay voucher.

  • Nice deal OP! I picked one up.

    • how long it takes to pickup?

  • 261 sold in the past 24 hours just for Futu. Proof that OzyBargain works.

  • Encryption on this one but not the SanDisk Ultra 11 or crucial BX100?

  • How long does it take before you get your free voucher? Can you use it in the same transaction?

    • Read the OP

  • Thanks TA and ShoppingExpress/Futu!

  • I see the windows 10 pc on a stick is available click and collect for $205. does anyone have one? or think they would be worth while?
Want to run office and stream xbox one games to lounge room tv…

  • Rookie question: new to the SSD world…will this hard drive work for a desktop because i'm planning to get it for my macbook, and if my macbook dies planning to build a new desktop using the same SSD. Thanks!

    • +1

Yes. As long as your motherboard has SATA, this will work.

  • -1

I hope I don't offend anybody on this forum by asking
if I can use the voucher in the same transaction?

Having never used a ebay voucher before I call upon the
experience and expertise of the forum members because
I certainly would like a hundred dollars off, this transaction,
not on my paypal credit for next time.

Can anybody who has actually done this please share their comments.

    Thanks in advance:)

    • The voucher won't be issued until November 1st mate, so no you can't use it in the same initial transaction as this deal expires before then.

What will happen, is on November 1st, you'll see a voucher for $50/$100 appear in your Ebay account, to be used on what you will on Ebay.

It'll expire on the 30th of November though, so make sure you spend it within the month.

      • ok then, thanks, an actual user.
Can't I just then, pick the item up after the 1st of November?
        And how do I pay:cash?
Or can I wait till the 100 voucher is accepted by paypal
then pick it up - saving the $100.
        ?
        I don't get it…

        • +1

You could, but the transaction has to be completed by the end of the 26th of this month, for the purchase to qualify for the voucher.

Also, you need to pay via Paypal to be able to get the voucher.

It's clarified within the Terms and Conditions, which you can see by clicking on the link below:

          http://pages2.ebay.com.au/Buyer_coupons/clickandcollect

        • @Baltoski:
Is this a marketing "gimicik" or do i really save 100 in the same transaction?
          Thanks

        • @billyjesus:

You don't save $100 in this transaction, you pay whatever you spend, but get a voucher for use next month.

So if you spend $200 in one transaction, you'll receive a $100 voucher to spend on Ebay in November. So in effect, you'll get to spend $300 for $200 outlay.

        • @billyjesus:

you don't save any money, because u still spend full amount.

but by using the voucher u can make some other purchases on ebay to offset the cost of those other item

        • @Baltoski:

it's a win for ebay though, cos u still need to spend the money or you lose it.
and if u make purchase that cost more than $100, they will get a higher fee back.

        • @tyler.durden: Oh for sure, Ebay are very clever here. Great promo for both us and them.

  • Thanks TA, this finally pushed me over the edge to join the SSD community.

Gonna put this bad boy into my lappy (Dell XPS L501X).

It's 5 years old, so should breathe new life into the beast…..if I can work out how to install and ghost the hard drive that is ;)

  • Awesome ! thanks!

  • OK, now what I need is a new laptop which I can upgrade with this new SSD.

  • Well there may be some saving but every business has put the prices up, so they are getting a bigger share and customers may be getting some value back. YMMV.

  • i just bought this too! thanks TA!!! lets all look forward to a faster computer computer and the $100 voucher :D

  • I'm trying to find what SSD size a couple of laptops take. Dell models E6440 & E6540. I can't download one manual for some reason. The other online manual just says 2.5" - no mention of what physical size. Google isn't helping today either (at least, not helping ME). I'm just going in circles, getting nowhere.

    • Does anyone know how to find what physical size SSD the laptops accept?

    • There's a couple of SSD deals going… Which brand/type is better?

    • I have a 6530 with a Samsung PM830 SSD, and it takes a standard 2.5" SSD. All you need to do is undo a screw, slide out the hard drive holder (on front left edhe of the machine in my case), undo one more screw fixing the plastic bracket to the SSD, remove the rubber damper rails and put them on the new SSD, and put it back in reverse steps of how you took it out.

Of course you'd want to clone your older SSD/HDD on to it first.

this is for 6440 model. It shows what hard-drive you can buy for it and one of them is a 1TB 2.5 inch SATA 7200RPM Hard Drive. So the samsung 2.5inch SSD should fit in it :)

and you can do the same search for the other model. Otherwise give them a call or open it up and check :D

    • I have two 500gb 840EVOs running in my E6420 — one in the regular drive bay and one in an aftermarket modular bay carrier (where the DVD drive used to sit). 8 months so far and no problems yet, knock on wood. It's certainly extended the useful life of the machine by another year or two, because it's THAT much better than the slow spinning drive it replaced. You DO have to be somewhat careful putting it in the HD bay of the E6420 (don't know about the ones you have, but telling you this just in case). Because it's thin, there's room for it to not completely line up with the connector. Make sure it lines up.

If you haven't yet, you could do worse than click buy now on this sammy. I know a few others who've installed SSD's on former company laptops, and I think ALL of them have been Samsungs. Ordinarily, I can't stand Samsung products, as they seem to be all bling with very little quality engineering. But these drives are good. My coworker just bought their old work laptop when it was rotated out, and I'm going to swap the old slow drive for one of these SSD's for them.

  • Just a quick question for the folks who've used the Woolies click n collect system. Auspost tracking says that it was delivered yesterday at around 10am. However, I'm yet to receive the confirmation code/pickup SMS/email from Woolies. How long does this take? I'm just a bit concerned that there may be a glitch in the system.

    • You've got to remember that orders aren't just going to be magically flown into a shelf behind the desk for you to conveniently pick up.

This woolies click n collect system is really just an extra leg in the existing logistics system; woolies stores will be receiving 1000's of consignments of which all will need to be handled and processed before they're ready for end user pick up.

      Give it time.

      • Yes I get that. I just didn't expect the turn around time to be anything longer than 1 business day.

Considering this is a service that is in it's relative infancy and that they're trying to sell this feature by awarding $100 ebay vouchers; I doubt my local Woolies is receiving 1000s of consignments that take 3-4 shifts to be sorted out. :)

My question was more around how long does it take for these guys to send out the notification (from the time the consignment has been delivered).

  • Can anyone recommend good software to copy you OS image? heard it's hit and miss?

    • EaseUS partition master

Ive used it on all my PC;s at home and work

      Pretty easy to use too

  • +2

THE best way to take advantage of this deal.

Step 1: Inform coworker who wants an SSD drive for the old work laptop they just bought for pocket change, about the deal.
Step 2: Have coworker ask, $245, is that a good price for this drive? Me: Yes, it's always around this price, a bit under 50 cents a gig.
Step 3: Have coworker ask, Can I go walk in to a shop like Officeworks or Dick Smith and get one for that price? Me: Not really. But this place IS local, they're in Alexandria, they have a real web site I've bought stuff from before, so I know they're reputable.
Step 4: Have coworker ask, I don't like ebay, if I give you $245 will you buy it for me? Me: Sure.
Step 5: Ask coworker, "Can I keep the ebay voucher?" Coworker: I don't care about ebay, you can keep it.
    Step 6: Profit!

    • or coworker say

no you can't keep the voucher, or pay me $100 in cash

      • No, coworker just say: I'm going to need your help swapping my old drive out. So in reality, it's compensation for time spent running drive clone software, making sure TRIM is turned on and swapping the disks.

  • Grabbed one for the desktop pc.
Just in time before it expired!

  • +1

Just received my 850EVO to C&C at Woolies.

This time they seem to have ironed out some of the kinks. Auspost showed delivered today, and this time instead of putting it in the internal mail bags, they rightly brought it to the C&C desk first up.

The Samsung data migration software took all of an hour to migrate everything over. Removed the older SSD, slotted this one in and it's business as usual. Samsung's software is quite good.

  • Anyone got their ebay voucher from this purchase yet?
I have nothing in the checkout to say there is a credit on my account and my only purchase during the promotion was this HDD…

    • Yep I received my SDD last Thursday and the voucher yesterday. Got the voucher through email notification and also should be in your accounts section of ebay that says you have a credit.

Did you buy it through click and collect store and not sent to your home address?

      • Yeah buddy Click and Collect, I might have to call them:(

        • +1

damn :( hope it's just an error on their system

    • Edit: oops just read your follow up.

  • Same boat mate.
Only purchased this ssd and still no voucher. Yes I did C&C.

    Anyone else have same issue?

    • +1

I'll call them tomorrow and post the outcome.

      • +1

CYOUR100 is the voucher code, use that at checkout and you'll have the $100 voucher apply

        • What do you mean, it's a generic code? And does that mean I have to use it all on one order?

        • +1

@quarrymaster: if your account qualifies then you use that feneric code.
          And not sure sorry

      • What number did you call? I could see the discounted price as post by simulacrum below. Cheers.

I typed in a query in the Search field and web-mailed them last night. Just waiting on a reply. I have nothing to buy that's more than $100 yet, but hopefully there'll be something if everything works out!

          Cheers.

        • @quarrymaster: any time :)

        • +1

          @ozy:

Just an update. Moments ago I received a response, confirming I have the $100 voucher applied against my account. I was asked to hover my mouse over "My eBay" near the top right and indeed it showed the info there. I further checked against an item as suggested and beneath it was the advice I could purchase it for exactly $100 less.

          So time to go shopping!

    • Same. I collected it on Sunday, not sure if the $100 is meant to be automatic when the item is shipped, is collected, or whatever.

      • +1

I think they were all issues on 1 November.
I never get any notifications for these. You can check by logging in on a pic and looking at a listing. If something's going for say $154, if you have the coupon there'll be a little link under the price that says something like "buy this for only $54" I'll do a screen grab later.

If you see that then you'll be able to use the CYOUR100 coupon to get $100 off a single purchase this month.

      • +1

If you've been issued the coupon, this is what you should see when you look at a listing: http://i.imgur.com/uhRhD2t.jpg
