  • grrr blocked from work :(

you forgot to mention the: "*with any other non domain product" bit.

they have promotions like this all the time. basically it turns out any "other product" isnt ever cheaper than 5 or 10 dollars so im not sure if it works out better.

personally i just google "godaddy coupons" and i can usually get $6.50 domains/renewals most of the time which is cheap enough for me.

    • I think the "with any other non-domain product" is for the front page offer (1.99USD domain) — not for the coupon code??

    • +2

You don't need to buy a non-domain product with this promotion.

      • +2

Ok I just tested it out and it does work. Damn that is cheap!

This definitely deserves a vote ive never seen GoDaddy domains so cheap :)

  • Definitely a good price. Renewals are typically just under 9USD with a coupon code.

  • +1

Don't get confused with the $1.99 deal on their frontpage, its a different promotion.

  • Renewal code at the moment: 749aprmo for 7.49USD renewals. You can add a year to your domain's expiry now. (Also sourced from the forums)

It's also noteworthy that you'll probably want to switch registrar in a year's time instead of renewing whois protection through GoDaddy. Name.com offer it free in their 9USD or so renewal fees.

    • Could you explain the whois protection a bit?
Isn't it included with USD 7.49 renewals?
Also can you apply both codes at the same time?

      • Whois protection, removes your registration information from the whois and substitutes it for go daddys. So if someone does need to contact you, they will contact godaddy who will forward it to you.
I think its unecessary. Ive had my .com registered to a fake address, phone etc. Only valid detail is email and name. Technically, you are not supposed to do that but there is no way to verify.

Don't think you can have multiple promotion codes on the same order.

        • Thanks neil.

        • And if you are caught/reported for providing false information ICANN has the full right to remove your domain. And yes, I have seen it done before.

          • @Munnday: Right,
but if I put 30 Queen Street, Melbourne, Australia there is no way they can verify or would want to verify that is where I live, work, play. As long as you have a contactable email address, you should be alright in practice.

        • That's your prerogative to fill out false/fraudulent information that can/has/does lead to your domain being removed… I just think it's worth the peace of mind to go with a registrar who automagically offers the whois protection. Why bother filling out fake information if you can get better service elsewhere?

          • @pais: People have also had their domains in peril by making the registrar the legal owner of their domain. That and losing your domain to fake WHOIS info are very remote possibilities though and shouldn't be major factors in decision making.

But specifying a real name can be significant because if you make one up, that fake name will be the legal owner and transferring ownership will be a pain. You'd need to say, find a dodgy registrar that'll let you edit the name field as easily as your address, or produce fraudulent documents in the name of the fake person to provide to the registrar.

            • @Jabba the Hutt: The whois/registrar system is flawed. I'll be damned if I'm going to put my real address (Note: I use real name) in for a personal site. Sure, business site, no problem but personal site I don't see why whois needs to show address information. While private registration is available for a couple of bucks, its against my principles. I don't want to have to pay for something that should have been built in to the system in the first place.

As for transferring domains, as long as the names/emails are the same you should have no problem. You could always change your whois info before transferring then change back after. At the end of the day, these guys want to make money off of you, and are not going to give you trouble. They'd be hard pressed to say prove your address on your whois. That's all I'm saying.

              • @neil: Yeah, I understand that and fully agree with what you're saying. My personal information shouldn't be revealed and readily available to just anyone, which is why I go with a registrar who provides whois protection free of charge. (NameCheap) I also don't think that'd go against your principles as it's bundled in with the price of domain registration!

  • I'd say the price is finally about right for new registrations based on what's left.

Finding a decent domain name nowadays is as tough as getting a good username on Hotmail - either pick something really crappy from the start, or spend half a day running through ideas you find mildly appealing and getting a knockback on each, before finally scoring a hit on your 379th preference.

    • .com.au is the way to go if possible, much more choice in names, getting a decent .com is ridiculous.

      • +1

more expensive, need an ABN, require 2 years

        • +1

          Oh no, not $20!

          ABN's are free.

One of the company names I originally wanted, the .com.au domain was owned by an individual (not a business) and he had an expired ABN years out of date - and even with the company name I couldn't get it off them, even though they didn't meet 1 elgibility criteria. There was no site up, nor had there ever been. Eventually after hounding, the "best" Auda could do was tell him to register a business name relative to the domain within 30 days or hand it over.

So really you can buy whatever you like, all the dribble about it being restricted is nonsense. At worst, you'll have to register a business name if you want to keep it, that's only if someone really wants it.

      • +1

I actually managed to register something reasonably appealing for personal use.

However if I could retract my positive vote, I would. GoDaddy's account interface is a mess. Took me ages to figure out how to set up the free e-mail forwarding. Not to criticise neil for submitting an otherwise good deal though.

        • click votes in the top right, find your name and select "retract vote" :)

  • Hey guys,

GoDadddy says they accept Payapl but when paying for the domain name I only see quick payment options and credit card. No Paypal? Help is greatly appreciated :)

    • There should be an option for Paypal, that's how I buy all my .com's through them. At the end (final checkout page) it should have a few payment options, paypal being one of them.

If it's not there, try making an account first, then registering the domain.

      • Wasn't for me either.

  • Great price, but godaddy is one of the most frustrating company's I have ever dealt with. Be careful about adding any cheap anonymous registration services or anything like that. Come renewal time you will be charged full price and the only way I could get rid of the service was to move my domain registration elsewhere.

    Isn't 99 cents + 18 cents closer to $1.17 than $1.19?

Doesn't work for renewals, but dos for transfers. The best bet for cheap domains is to move them out of GoDaddy when the renewal is due, and then churn them back in when they have one of these specials going.

    • Whoops. Yes, $1.17, I'll adjust the title.

  • wow, I just purchased a domain and within 3 minutes I got a call from commonwealth bank confirming a transaction from godaddy. O_O"

do they have a bad reputation or something?

    • +1

It's a legitimate company, I've been purchasing from them for years.

Credit card companies run programs to look for transaction patterns that look like fraud. Yours could've been flagged for any number of reasons, like maybe you've never made a small US purchase online before (just an example). It's standard routine.

      • Awesome, Thanks!

    • I get this all the time when buying stuff online from OS especially if its under $3.00AU

The banks mark these are suspicious transactions. I normally get it when i buy stuff from itunes.

Have had it happen to me with westpac and citibank.

Dont worry about it. Its normal for them to check and its actually good thing not a bad thing!

  • Just be careful when registering domains, especially with GoDaddy. Google "godaddy steals domains" for more info.

    • Search for "any domain register steals domains" and you will also get a million responces…..

Just a heads up on something I noticed buried in the domain settings - it's set to automatically renew by default. So find that option and uncheck it if you want to avoid getting billed a year from now.

    • I was concerned about that, thanks you! :)

  • +1

no matter how cheap godaddy is, i am always put off by this: http://nodaddy.com/

    • Hey thanks for this. I was going to register but after seeing that - I think i'll give it a miss.

    • Register for 1.30AUD -> transfer to namecheap. Big deal.

    • Im sure you still use paypal even after seeing this paypalsucks.com

    • -1

Yeah from my dealing with web site support Go Daddy's services has been questionable. Negative for me. Also most hosting deals I know of include the domain name registration for free.

If you're not getting your domain name registration included for free, change hosts.

  • Any idea how long this promotion lasts?

    • Well, the code refers to the Superbowl which is on the 7th of Feb, so at least until then I would have thought.

  • dammit, i just bought a domain 3 days ago!

  • Just transferred 2 domains from namecheap.com wont let me do 2 from the one godaddy account looks like its limited to one coupon per account so i used a friends account and then later i will get them to push the domain to me.

It wont work with .info domains but it worked with my .com and .net

  • Need. To. Think. Of. A. Domain. Name. To. Register…

Maybe OzBargainSucks.com — register it before anybody else does :)
