10% off at Masters: 2-8 Nov (MASTERS10)

1510
MASTERS10

Picked up some stuff at Masters today and noticed this on the bottom of my voucher. More convenient in many ways than the THANKYOU10 voucher as it is usable in store. As with any of these voucher codes just punch in the voucher number at the checkout and it will work, or ask the check out people to scan your phone. Both options have worked for me in the last MASTERS10 offer.

Seems that they have another one of these every week, but hey if Lowes pull out there may be no more anyway, so may as well go for gold.

I bet that Lowe's would be flabbergasted at Master's lack of success, and sick of Woolworths telling them they know better because "our local market is different, you wouldn't understand". Despite ownership, Masters has been a baby of Woolworths with only IP drawn from Lowe's.

I would not be surprised if Lowe's bought out the venture and came down to fix it themselves.

Otherwise, prepare for more than 10% discount coming soon.

Here is a digitally generated version of the photographed barcode to make it easier to scan from your phone, or print it off to guarantee a successful scan. I did for the last deal and it seemed to help a few people.

My best bargain from Masters at the moment is the elevated garden bed, $110 down to $55. I have 2 of them now and highly recommend it to anyone that doesn't have a yard to build a proper garden bed.

    • I'm not sure if we are talking about the same Lowes. When I first heard about Masters, a mate of mine in the US predicted disaster for Woolies.

A quick (neutral) search on Google of "Lowes review" shows very low scores and many negative links, eg a score of 1.5/5 from Consumer Affairs. I didn't see anything positive said on any of the first 2 pages of Google results.

      http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/lowes.html

Or 2252 negative reviews at pissed consumer (vs 1183 complaints for Home Depot),
      http://lowes.pissedconsumer.com/
      http://home-depot.pissedconsumer.com/

      • Lowe's alone is bigger than the entirety of Woolworths.

  • lowes are definitely not going to pull out its woolworths who probably will.
lowes get paid out $600m if woolworths pull out from memory.

these patchwork vouchers are annoying. i wont shop at masters anymore unless i have a 10% off voucher so they only get my business every 2-3 weeks. why not just stick it on the front page of their catalogue.

its an upmarket hardware store when most people just want downmarket and cheap. they should have done a trial with a few stores.
their online inventory checking system is awful.

i bet ww do a dick smith and offload it cheaply so they can get back to basics. sell bigw too.

Why is it you can't get a price I show up on their website, until you enter a postcode, then it tells me there there no store near me and there's no still no price for a comparison.

At Least bunnings website is user friendly and simple.

      • +3

True, but Bunnings need to update their website to also show stock levels. Sick of going to my nearest store for something to be told i need to go to one of their 'larger' stores as they don't carry it

      • +1

You need to enter a postcode so it can check stock and pricing at your local store.
If you let me know your postcode and suburb I can forward it on to our online team and they can get it fixed up.

        • -4

once youve entered postcode and it shows no stock then you cant change postcode to check other stores without logging out of browser/ clearing cache. very annoying. almost as if they dont want you to go to a store that has stock. who designed this website?

          @Garagesale:
You should be able to change it a little easier by clicking on 'change store' at the top of the page in the middle beneath the store times

Changing the store is easy. Don't blame the website for your lack of ability.

        • @Garagesale: You could also open a new incognito window in chrome, or the equivalent in other browsers without having to clear your cache, logout, etc.

    • By running 10% off specials so regularly, Masters is just training its customer base to avoid non essential purchases until the offer is back on. I'm not complaining, but it's not really the image Masters would want to cultivate. The last time Bunnings offered X% off to everyone was… never.

      • +2

The problem is that Masters can't get people in the door. By offering the discount, the aim is to establish a rapport. Once the clientele base is established, the discounts can be weaned off :)
They figure that regularly dropping the prices by 10% is more effective than leaving them 10% lower - most probably gets more attention on OzBargain!

  • +1

It will be sad if they close, short term bargains likely, but without a competitor Bunnings will own the market and prices will probably go up.

    • +7

its unlikely, bunnings have such high margins. we need Masters to compete with them

      • +2

Yes, I look forward to the Friday night price beats!

        • It is also good to have HunterOfBargains20 help us with bargains and stock levels :)

      • -2

        "bunnings have such high margins"

… and yet they're routinely cheaper on everything I buy, for the same product?

    • +2

They have for years. Even with just the small independents they were running the hardware store game.
Masters still sucks IMO. I went there on the weekend and it's rubbish compared to Bunnings. Seriously looked like a ghost town. More staff than customers in there.

      • +3

I second this, was there on the weekend, and there were so many staff standing around doing nothing. When I asked for assistance I got the worst attitude from 3 of the staff members because as far as I could tell, I'd asked them to actually do something… lack of repeat business is why this company is failing.

        • Nowhere near as helpful, happy or well presented staff, barring one exceptional staff, Alison (Coffs Harbour). Cashier staff didn't really know what they were doing, either.

        • @Debravity: I think Masters were hoping everyone would just use the self serve checkouts and didn't bother training any of their staff in customer service.

      • +1

Same experience here the previous week when looking at different bbq with the missus.could not get any service despite flagging down two different people. Standard line..i will get someone to help you.. 20 mins later, everyone is just standing around. No thanks.

    • +2

You might be surprised that Bunnings only has about 20% of the Aus hardware market.

Hardware retailing is really fragmented in Aus which is why Luscombe and O'Brien dicided they wanted a piece of the action (after initially trying to buy Bunnings from Wesfarmers).

They really should have just stopped with the Danks acquisition. That business has been continuously turning a profit. Should have learned from "Mitre 10 Mega" that upmarket hardware stores are a FAIL.

      • Why do people think Masters is upmarket?

        • +5

Masters is bright, clean and shiny. Bunnings are trying not to be these things - they want you to touch, pick up and play with things. They feel more down to Earth. Sub-conscience perception is strong. Masters appears to be too clean cut and neat.

        • +6

@ilikeit:They designed Bunnings like that so people feel they are getting warehouse prices. There is a perception too that Bunnings are giving every cent they can to the customer by having prices like $9.88. They also appear to have minimal overheads by putting staff in their ads and not hiring actors. A "we're not fancy but we're cheap" feel.

  • i need one to use instore on Wednesday this week

  • +4

Most brokers are predicting a shutdown rather than a sale of the Masters business by Woolworths as soon as Lowes exercises their sell option. This means that there's a high possibility of a liquidation sale within the next 6-12 months, so if you can hold off, there will be insane bargains ahead.

  • exactly the same code and barcode number as september's 10% off

    • Yes, but September's vouchers included appliances, so much more useful than this one

  • I herd timber is cheaper at Masters vs Bunnings, anyone can confirm this? -_- only ever visit my local Bunning's, yet have a Masters trade centre just around the corner

    • +1

Its a bitsa, depends on the timber and lengths. 70x35 was cheaper in 3m lengths at Masters but 70x45 was more expensive. Either way it was in the order of 5c/m difference, so the 10% off certainly balanced it out.

For me it comes down to convenience. The closest Masters is roughly equidistant from the Bunnings, but a much easier route with less traffic. Nevertheless in my afternoon off today i went to two Bunnings and a Masters…

      • Thanks :) I will go for the 10% this weekend!

    • +4

Then why not drop in and see for yourself!?

      • most folks prefer a convincing opinion than facts

        • Also, some historical experiences might be better than just current pricing :D

      • Most of the time, when I finish work, they are already closed, but Bunnings is always open. I don't really want to head over on the weekend… well, it's my lazy time (more lazy time)

  • My local masters (if you can say that, as its a bit of a hike), has pretty much removed all self checkouts and now you get served by a person. So no manual entering at the checkout, plus they don't like scanning 'phone barcodes' as you have to have the original receipt!

    • +1

I can tell you my local store ONLY has self serve checkouts - and bar-codes are missing from a number of products I've tried to buy - ended up just leaving them on the counter and walking out a few times now - the staff CANNOT HELP in that situation trust me.

      • Mine use to be all self checkouts…. They have changed lately…. it upsets me as I can't use these codes now for items I find when I wonder, only the click/collect stuff :(

        • +4

Don't get me started on Click&Collect - tried that for the first time last week; it was more like Click&Wait - but that wasn't really the problem. The store staff were just absolutely horrible to deal with when I went to collect the goods. Four separate staff members said "Click&Collect is separate company to us, we have trouble with it all the time" and really there wasn't a problem with the system… the in-store masters staff who are meant to pick the items just hadn't done their job - and I was like the worst person in the world for pointing out.

        • +1

@omniX32: Yep same thing happened to me. Stood there for at least 20min (maybe 30min) because they couldn't find stock.

        • +5

@jack4109: Wow, all your Masters suck. :)
Mine has been great so far. I got my Click and Collect right away. Everyone's friendly and willing to help too. It's the Everton Park, QLD branch.

        • +1

@omniX32: Yeah, I did one on Wednesday night, went to pick it up Saturday morning and it still hadn't been picked. Waited around 15mins for a staff member to go and pick it manually then come all the way back.

        • Yeah, and they had the stock! so why wasn't it picked? - clearly nobody at Masters is watching the store Picking time delays.

        • @eug:Same…..didn't have any issues with my click and collect.

I bought one of those Ego 56v cordless hedge trimmers last week. I went in-store first to check it out (and because I had the 10% code for online purchases only) and a staff member came over straight away as soon as I picked it up to run over it with me. He then asked if I wanted to 'fire it up' and went and grabbed a new battery off the shelf and put it in and I had a play….can't do that at Bunnings, you'd be lucky to find any staff.

I love Bunnings, but I really hope Masters can hang in there otherwise we'll all be paying a lot more.

        • @tight-ass: So even after a EXCELLENT in-store experience with masters that was way better than bunnings, you still end the post with that you love Bunnings…… umm ok…..

        • @Level380: I didn't mention anywhere that it was way better than Bunnings, that's how you interpreted it. It really isn't that hard to understand what I meant from my post, but I'll spell it out for you because you're obviously special!

I love Bunnings due to their range and convenient locations, however the staff there don't know the difference between a spade and shovel (if you can actually find any staff). Masters appears to have more staff on hand and they approach customers offering assistance. Masters also seem to have 10% off every second week.

At the end of the day I'll buy from whoever has the cheapest price. Despite the fact Bunnings claim to have the 'lowest prices', they don't and I regularly go to Bunnings with an ad from elsewhere for their 'price guarantee', which is getting harder and harder to do because many of the products they sell are sold exclusively at Bunnings.

If Masters goes under we all lose. Just like if WW or Coles were to go under.

        • @tight-ass: haha I'm the special one here…. yeah sure… Thanks for that, guess special people like you need to take it down to name calling.

Well your complaints about Bunnings not having staff and not being helpful would imply it was a better experience at Masters. But clearly you value the Bunnings marketing over customer service etc So enjoy.

        • @Level380: Let me guess…your other hobby is going around correcting everyone's grammar and spelling? Get a life champ

        • @eug:
Never had any issues at my locals masters either. Click and Collect has worked fine at St Mary's NSW.

Really hope it doesn't get closed down.

    • Landsdale WA has self-checkouts but during the quiet weekdays, they rope them all off so you have to use a human :\

  • +1

30 minute drama to pickup a washing machine I paid for three hours earlier.

For competition sake I don't want them to go under, but they really are terrible.

    • +4

Did you get a email saying it was ready, or did you just rock up?

      • I paid in store, and was told it was out the back ready to be picked up.
When I returned, that person was not on duty, and no one else seemed to know what to do or where it was. Sort of thing that can and does happen anywhere, but sadly, inconveniences and lack of service like this are a regular occurrence at my local masters.

I like the masters near me (Parkinson) , I drive past a Bunnings to go there because I've found the staff to be awesome. They don't carry everything I need, but usually enough to keep me happy. Bunnings staff said flat out said I won't help you when looking at colors, the Masters staff spent heaps of time helping me.

    • +1

Yeah I shop at both Bunnings and Masters. As with most things on the internet, you get a heap of negative opinions vented, and not many positive opinions given.

    • I shop at both as well, Bunnings are sometimes cheaper on various items.
I like their Fasteners and Electrical section, Fasteners have pull out draws for most of the nuts/bolts/washers.
The layout excels over Bunnings by a long shot. And I always go there if I need something specific fastener wise.
I found their staff helpful when I can find one to give me a hand.

My local Bunnings is always chocked with people carpark is always >70% full weekdays and you can't park on Saturdays lol.
Masters has a few people but not a great deal.

  • Best thing I saw in ages, was when Masters opened in a town near us and all the problems with never finding staff at Bunnings suddenly vanished.
Now they had Masters close by, they could not come over quick enough to say "G'day' and "Do you need any help?"
Before that, you'd be lucky to see staff on the floor and the ones you did, were hiding out the back sucking on icy poles on hot days.

Now both stores offer great service and I shop at whoever has the better pricing on the items I want. These 10% off and big paint deals have had me going to Masters more often now though.

  • +2

Is this the place to dump on masters Click & Collect? Because it's as useless as it is frustrating.

1st order, hear nothing for 2 days except for the immediate payment (they're pros at that part). Call them, hold, wait, hold. "Yeah, we're so busy" but we'll get onto it ASAP and call you right back" (this is complete BS, no way anyone in this Masters store even knows what busy is). Wait another day, call them. Wait hold wait "oh your item was in clearance now it's sold out" still in stock at the store on the web. "Yeah sold out of everything except a light globe on your order, do you want to come in and get that?" No, just cancel it.

2nd time (what do they say about the definition of insanity?),
exact same process. Call them after a day or so. Oh we busy, we'll call you. This time they actually call the next day. Only to say we have one item, but not others, do you want to come in and get that? Ok. In the mean time I get an email saying everything is ready. Get there late at night, hour before close. only customer in amongst 8 staff. And it's like I'm a huge f*king chore. 2/3 items ok but it takes 15 for them to tell me they sold out of the last item. Or "I can go and check the store to see if there are any myself" with vague directions to the area I go hunting, find the product and bring it to them. Another 10min to check my ID. Grab another staff member because they can't work out whatever. Eventually leave with the items 35min later.

They need to remove C & C till they can get it right.

The staff are screwing themselves out of their own jobs when this place goes bust. which is a shame, hardware needs good competition.

    • +3

Another 10min to check my ID.

this is my most-loathed part of the whole process. i got a proof of age card done for claiming birthday freebies and picking up orders. places like dick smith, myer and supercheap auto, they just glance at it and hand over my order.

my experiences with masters and the good guys: something about a proof of age card that gets them so stumped. they look at it, go 'huh', flip it over back and forth a few times. not sure what for… it's [government-issued] photo id! isn't that what they want? or do they think it's counterfeit? would they even know how to tell a real/counterfeit card? are they looking for some other info to record?

not everyone has a driver's licence (i actually do; i just don't need a random person snooping at my residential address and licence number) or carries their passport with them everywhere.

  • +1

I've had no issues with click and collect. Although my orders have been small 100-200. Only used due to 10% discount code, would probably spend more if could apply in store without issues.

As a Woolworths shareholder of course i want them to succeed, but to also promote healthy competition, however I'm still spending the majority of my money at Bunnings. Pretty much what everyone is saying is spot on. Range, service, price (not always though) and convenience.

I'd like to add, I've often seen on numerous occasions staff/ management huddling and talking to each other when there are customers, including myself seeking assistance. It's not a good look!

We renovated our newly purchased home this year and we spent over 15k at Bunnings and probably only 1-2k @ Masters.
Small change to lots, but as DIYers I think the percentage speaks volume.

I' will still continue to shop at Masters but will choose Bunnings 9 times out of 10.

  • +1

Not sure why people are feeling sorry for Woolworths. Yes, they are losing $$$ from Masters, the shareholders that is. The CEO and board still walk away with millions in salary and stock options each year, abiet losing their $200k/yr bonus for "bad performance". Furthermore, how many local businesses has Woolworths destroyed in the last couple of decades by monopolizing entire industries from alcohol, fuel, large format stores, etc. I was surprised last week when I notice all the Woolworths around my area started hiring JAPANESE sushi cooks to create fresh sushi and undercutting all the local sushi restaurants by about 30%… They can do this because they subsidize the losses from other money making operations, meanwhile the local sushi takeaways eventually close shop. Let us remember why Woolworths are currently in dire straits compared to Coles.. When WW was strong and Coles was facing falling growth and closing stores, WW decided to increase prices throughout all their stores because they thought they had complete monopoly in the supermarket segment, unfortunately for them, Coles was acquired by Westfarmers (Bunnings) and knew exactly how to out play them.

    • not sure about woolies, but the sushi section in Coles is another company (not coles) that leases space and a % of sales.

Wouldn't be surprised if the sushi business in both stores also shut down, rarely see anyone buy and the prices are not good value.

      • yeah not a big seller

    • I'm with you on this one mate… I really don't like it. But we live in the type of society that breeds this and we all want to join the strong force instead of fighting for fairness.

There are some lower prices which we are happy to take advantage of… but in the long run I don't think we will be better off.

So no sympathy from me… but of course I must admit I shop at all of their shops frequently.

    • I'm pretty sure the CEO got the chop for the bad financial year.
I put it down to the Quilton toilet paper bargain last year.

  • +2

Wow some hate for masters. Only been to one, once. I got a price-diff discount and a date etc with the hot cashy. Place seems alright to me!

    • +4

I think that's just how the internet works. People who have had a bad experience will understandably want to tell the world, while people who have had no problems at all wouldn't go out of their way to look for an internet forum to tell everyone "Masters was great, I found what I was looking for and their staff were helpful".

      • +5

people are also cynical of such positive comments and, as such, too keen to bring out the pitchforks and accuse the person of being a sockpuppet (see avatar lol)

  • We definitely need Masters to stay in Australia, IMO.

After doing extensive and lengthy renovations and buying virtually everything from Bunnings (living in SA there isn't much choice unless you like driving, a lot) I've noticed that Bunnings have increased their prices on a lot of things since last year. Paint, brushes, electrical & tools etc. Granted, the price increases haven't been huge.

If what is seen by most consumers as their main competitor ups and closes they'll have virtually free reign to increase prices as they will assuredly dominate the market.

Mitre 10, Home Hardware & other small hardware chains just can't compete with Bunnings. Masters can, but it's going to take time for the perception of consumers to change that Bunnings is the default destination for hardware.

    • +3

As nearly everything is IMPORTED now the price increases have probably got more to do with the AUD exchange rate than anything else.

  • Let's not forget there are hundreds of other hardware stores out there, and Bunnings will price beat online stores.

  • -6

Someone always used to brag to me how good masters was and how much better than bunnings it is. They are much larger stores and have soooo much stuff.

    How WRONG they were!!!

I can go into Masters and leave empty handed

I can go into Bunnings and leave with things I don't need just because it was cool, or I may need it in a few months

Masters can go out of business for all I care!

    • +1

If there's no real competitor, Bunnings can raise their prices because you'll have nowhere else to go. The stuff you didn't need would cost you more.

  • +1

Personally I prefer Masters. Prefer their website, prefer their look and feel, prefer their prices, prefer their clearance and specials philosophy. But the C&C is hopeless in that a product which you purchase and pay for sometimes will not be picked from the shelves for 3-4 days. In this time the hot items are easily sold out by people shopping in store. And the worst thing is they don't tell you this. I could have easily visited and purchased the item on the 3rd day after the special but didn't because I had already 'purchased and reserved' the item three days earlier, only to find when going in to pickup the item on the 5th day, that it hadn't been reserved and was sold out. Nice.

    • sometimes will not be picked from the shelves for 3-4 days

But why is this allowed to happen? Surely Masters is aware of the time it takes these stores to pick the products?

      • The staff at my local (Canberra) store have actually all been very helpful for the last couple of years I have been shopping there and generally try everything they can to help, but when I questioned them about the click and collect product not being picked/reserved until 4 days later, they simply said they are supposed to do it every morning for the internet orders from the day before but that they are too busy and can't keep up.

        • lol too busy, i see 10 of em just sitting around.

    • almost as if they dont care less.
the sign of a company about to close.
reminds me of service at myer.

      • Different stores are different. Not all their stores are full of lazy people. Mine isn't. If anything, they're just a little bit too eager to help!

        • Its funny isn't it. I find my local Bunnings staff to be hard to approach. Every time I need to ask a question it always seems as though they are busily going somewhere else, and when I try and stop them they either say they are busy going somewhere or come across like you are interrupting them by asking them a question.

Also another comment… I ended up filling my trolley with $150 worth of stuff from Masters on the weekend… all sorts of little items. I just wish I had a way of getting a 10% discount… but I had left all my reciept vouchers at home, and the code 'Thankyou10' doenst work in store! I asked really nicely and the register chick was kind of feeling bad for me… but there was nothing they could do. Oh well, it doesnt hurt to ask

    • +1

go to self checkout and enter the numbers in the barcode, on the screen there is an option to manually enter an item code.

  • Just tried using the code on this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/217887 and it didn't work.. :( Just bought the woolies gift card too damn it.. i'll have to do some groceries at Woolies

  • +2

just tried to use this on a washing machine but cannot get it to work. has anyone used it lately?

    • Failed for me too, also buying a washing machine. Excludes appliances, maybe that's why.

      • you are right. odd it worked the day before when i was deciding what to buy.

  • Used this- went through Cashrewards and used my WISH giftcard for additional discounts. It only works on some items- I bought a bbq and it gave me the full 10% then when I added stuff, the final discount wasn't really 10%. I don't think it worked on the grass seed and soil I bought… or maybe it was the carpet cleaner solution. Anyway, MASTERS10 does work online.
