[Expired] Free Glasses/Spectacles (Lens and Frame) . Only Pay Shipping ($15) . Melbourne Only

871
MELBOURNE

UPDATE: EXPIRED. Only valid on 2 Feb 2010.

Hey all,

My first deal.

Apparently limited to first 500 people only. MELBOURNE only. ONE PER HOUSEHOLD.

Pick your glasses and put in your prescription and use the MELBOURNE code to get the frames and lenses free.

You pay shipping which ends up to be $15 ($9.95 + $5.95 insurance).

If you don't know your prescription or simply want the frame, just put 0.00 for the left and right lens.

There are some nice designer frames there (Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein).

Cheers! Enjoy!

  • Is the deal for Melbourne-residents only?

    • OP: what are the exact terms and conditions.
I ask as I just ordered a pair and had it shipped to Sydney. I was still just paying for the normal amount. It went through but I am not sure if it will go through entirely once they actually come to process the order.

Also the good thing with this website(use them for contacts) is you can order and pay later.

      • Please see TITLE. It says Melbourne ONLY.

Do what Ranagade did…get frames delivered to a mate in Victoria!

        • Can't wait for SA as I need to recheck my eyes.

  • Just tried to put through an order now. Came up as $65 (single lense btw)

    • I think the deal is for first 500 pairs only. So get in there quick.

I ordered and paid for mine earlier this morning (right before I posted the deal here).

  • I live in Sydney, but got frames delivered to a mate's place in Brunswick, VIC.

Was looking to get new glasses… excellent deal!

  • is there a limit to how many you can order?

i just ordered a pair - might try and go for another…

    • Sorry, I should have said this in my OP. Deal is ONE PER HOUSEHOLD according to email I received!

  • I've made two separate order (different names) to the same address in SYDNEY..and already paid for both order,

    and got my confirmation email..

Hopefully they will send it through..

    =)

    • how u can get free ?

      • put MELBOURNE in the promotion code on the Check out

  • i gave them a call
they said its for melbourne only and it will be cancelled by the admin team if your from sydney

    bah

    • So my credit card payment will be cancelled?

  • how come the price is $100++??

    • Its basically free frames discount promo code. So if you get, say, an $88 frame, and the basic (Free) lenses, it works out as free (plus P+H and ins).

  • -1

Fingers crossed for a Brisbane-only version one day, then. Racists! ;)

  • oh i just found out, with the code, discount is only 88$. so make sure you choose $88 glasses, not $100+

    • Strange, mine worked when I ordered frames which cost more that $88. $98 from memory…

      • +1

Mine too, was more than $88.

  • Got a free pair of Levi's frames with the Sydney promo code about a month back. Great deal!

  • This is the best deal I've ever seen.

  • Darn wish this was in Perth. How often do they do these deals?

  • Just got some even though I don't know a bit of the information from my prescripton. Figured I can get proper lenses later, didn't want to miss out!

  • Thanks great deal…

  • Great Deal. Paid $15.23 for the order

  • +1

    Spectacular deal!

  • wohoo. ordered some too. finally i wasnt too late for a deal like that. :)

  • Great deal, just ordered one myself :)
    Thanks for letting us know.

  • Very nice indeed!

I decided to cancel it at the last minute.
No idea how it would look on me and whether it will fit.
I just cannot justify spending $15 just to find that out.

    • Probably a good idea, if I had some time I'd check them out at a shop first.

    • +1

i just figured if they don't fit or look crap, i'd just ebay them!

  • Got mine too :) Great deal, definitely worth the buy.

  • need a Perth one… pleaseeeeee

  • I don't think where you are in the country matters, "melbourne" is just a coupon code.

This company seems to a Canadian company, the glasses are probably shipped direct from Canada.

The domain name is registered to Coastal Contacts, a Canadian company. Another giveaway is the contact phones numbers, the available time is listed in Pacific Standard Time, and it ain't this side of the Pacific. Also the non 1800 fax number is 1 604 669 6855, a Canadian number.

    • You're right, mine were shipped from overseas. Still, only took just over a week to arrive from the time I ordered them. Came with cleaning cloth, mini double-ended screwdriver, and protective case. Mine is a hard, denim covered zip up case to go with the Levi's frames. All very cool for $15!

  • Great deal - thanks!

  • thanks so much. i cant wait.
for those already wearing glasses i just used my measurements from my own pair as a guide. normally on the inside somewhere will have 3 sets of numbers.

  • i just put an order through, i live in qld but added the melbourne coupon

how do i access the buy now pay later scheme? hehehe

edit: they called me back, apparently the order has gone through, i just have to wait for the glasses and then i pay for the glasses :D

also for those on health funds, some are already able to claim these on their funds like NIB, but MBF is not available yet, they are in talks with MBF at the moment

edit: they called me back, apparently the order has gone through, i just have to wait for the glasses and then i pay for the glasses :D

LOL…You will pay for full price as it clearly for VIC only.
I just rang to get them ship to SA but they said the discount will not apply.

      • heheh if i have to pay full price, i'm returnin it :P

        • Then you pay the postage fee! :)

          • @POWERevolution: hehe true true, i only got cheap frames, so if it's good, i'll keep it :)

  • Just made myself an order. will arrive within 7-days according to customer service, as i called.
    Total cost $15.23 delivered.

    Can't wait!!

    • Just on the phone with them, nice customer service girl said…

Around 5 days to process and 10 days to ship from Canada so total could be around 2 weeks.

      • Ship from Canada , hmm my spidey sense is tingeling . Would this be fakes from China ? how else could frames & Lenses be free ?

Plus the shipping we are paying might just cover Canada to Melb the local Melb

Has anyone ever used or heard of this business before ?

  • I can't get the 'Virtual Mirror' to work. Anyone else having issues with it?

    • +1

Works for me. Using Google Chrome!

    • Same here. I tried both picture upload and webcam. It always stuck in uploading the photo. Firefox and Chrome are doing the same thing.

  • Just ordered. Let the wait begin!…

    Good deal. Thanks, OP.

  • Just ordered but the total cost is $17.63 (Handling $7.68 & shipping $9.95) ???

    • If I'm not mistaken, the handling charges increases depending on the price of your glasses. If you choose one $88 or below, it will be $15.23 or so, as stated by the OP.

  • Should i try with a Sydney Address????

    • call them up and ask

  • Thanks for the heads up Shawn_low, this looks like a great deal!

  • For those who wear progessive lenses (rather than single vision) I just tested it out for my mum and you have to pay $79 for the special lenses but you still get the frames for free.
eg. A $98 pair of glasses with progressive lenses ($79) ends up costing $89.62 (includes a handling and insurance charge of $10.62) - the discount was $98 .

  • Did anyone get it to work with the sunglasses? I could have sworn it cut the price of a pair I selected, but I l changed my order and can't get it to work again now… I'm just wondering if it was my imagination!

    • Just tested it and it works if you are tinting prescription glasses.
It charges you for tint and the shipping + handling charge - discounts the cost of the frames.

If you are buying regular sunglasses I don't think it works.

    • +3

People like you make others wonder why they bother share information. You are negging the poster.

  • -3

What happens if you get the Glasses and refuse the pay the Invoice?

In other words, if a person just ignores all correspondance and just keeps the Glasses.

These must be "run out" models of frames, worth less than $10.

No business is going to lose potential money on $100 frames!

The potential for fraud & bad debt is just not worth losing their money over!

What Debt Recovery company do these use for people who do not pay their Invoices?

    • Since they have your address probably send a debt collector around.
Also have a interest fee for everyday you don't pay the glasses off after 30 days its around 13% i think.

      • -3

Since they have your address probably send a debt collector around.

I put my PO Box down as well as the fake name I use on Ozbargains ("Alex Portnoy").

Pretty useless sending a debt collector to a PO Box, especially with a fake name!

Do they use a Debt Collection company at all? If Yes, what is the name of the Debt Collection company to they use?

I believe they just rely on peoples' honesty; most people ARE honest.

Also have a interest fee for everyday you don’t pay the glasses off after 30 days its around 13%
        i think.

What's the point of charging interest to a bill that will never be paid?

        • +1

I think I read (whilst glancing through) that they don't deliver to a PO Box address.

        • +3

ohsnap is right, they don't do PO Boxes. Also alexportnoy, what you have described is a) highly illegal, b) not welcome on ozbargain.

          • +1

@DaveCharlie: Just had a quick look at the help section and I found this: 'We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are not able to send Courier deliveries to P.O. Boxes, Rural Routes, campsites and general delivery addresses.'

I noticed they have two shipping options -
•Priority Delivery (4-10 business days after 2-day processing) is $9.95
            •Courier Delivery (2-3 days after 2-day processing) is $29.95

So I'm wondering if PO Boxes are O'K with the 'priority delivery' option?

            • @chichi:

So I’m wondering if PO Boxes are O’K with the ‘priority delivery’ option?

Only one way to find out!

Try it & report back ;-)

  • Awesome awesome deal! Well done for your first post. Thanks shawn_low

  • I ordered the glasses… and I'm in sydney and the coupon worked. so I don't know what will happen. If they credit card order went through the its suppose to work! Postage to Sydney was a bit extra, $17.03! We'll see.. maybe I just threw $17 down the drain. Maybe they are fake? surely not though.. but when I'm in Vietnam, I stock up on frames from a government owned optomertrist that sells gucci, raybans for less than $20AUS, mostly around $12. I'm assuming they're fake! but still.. great quality frames that last me a few years for the plastic ones!

    • -2

If they credit card order went through the its suppose to work!

There is no credit card required.

If you put one in, you got scammed.

Apprently, they send Invoices by postal mail, which they rely on your honesty to pay.

I say "Apparently" because no-one in Australia has received one of their glasses, yet.

      I’m assuming they’re fake!

      Could well be.

I actually think they are legit, but "run-out" models.

      They are sent from Canada.

      • Just curious how you know that 'no-one in Australia has received one of their glasses, yet' ? A few people here have said they have ordered from them and received their items - and a quick search on google shows quite alot of people who have purchased from them and have also received their glasses or conact lenses.

        • -3

A few people here have said they have ordered from them and received their items

          Who?

          • +2

@alexportnoy: Have you read the other comments on here? The ozbargain user junior_thrift for starters. Also a number of users have mentioned the good customer service they received when contacting them.

          • @alexportnoy: Look up.

junior_thrift 12 hours 20 min ago "Got a free pair of Levi’s frames with the Sydney promo code about a month back. Great deal!"

junior_thrift 7 hours 52 min ago "You’re right, mine were shipped from overseas. Still, only took just over a week to arrive from the time I ordered them. Came with cleaning cloth, mini double-ended screwdriver, and protective case. Mine is a hard, denim covered zip up case to go with the Levi’s frames. All very cool for $15!"

    • Soo you sent it to a Sydney address and the transaction went through? It should work then. Surely they can't charge you extra. Worst case now is probably just a full refund.

      • Read the other comments above people. They have stated that they will cancel all orders outside of Melbourne. You won't be charged for the purchase, but you also won't be receiving the product.

        • I hope the post to ballarat!!

    • Nah, it worked out to $17.03 due to the price of the glasses you ordered and not postage to Sydney. If the price of the eyewear was $88 for example, the shipping will be $15.23.

  • Best deal on ozbargain since my short time viewing the site. Please post if theres ever a Sydney deal!!

  • By the way, their actual address is in SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA:

CLEARLY CONTACTS - 78 WILLIAM STREET, SYDNEY, NSW, 2011, AUSTRALIA

I got this in their Order Confirmation email to me.

So feel free to visit them and try the glasses out for yourself!

  • +1

Yep, you're probably right, it's just a dropbox.

This is 78 William Street in Google Maps which is nothing but a massive Skyscraper:

    http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=…

Next to the famously dodgy Kings Cross!

  • Thanks for sharing shawn_low — Fantastic offer.

  • +1

Don't buy contact lenses from these guys. Last time I did (in 2006), they lacked a provider code - so you can't claim from Australian health funds.

  • Thank you for this,

I was in the market for some new glasses! ad this deal has saved me about $300!!

  • +1

GREAT DEAL!!! How comes cheap like this, the frames cost more than $200 in store, anyone knows the cost of those FENDI, ARMANI?

I know how it is work, just free for t frames, I choose the $0 glasses, then it works, order a Armani frame cost 16 postage, GREAT! Thanks.

  • +4

This deal makes me wonder why we are constantly being OVERCHARGED by opticians here in Melbourne. Sure, guys like Specsavers and BigW are coming in with cheaper specs but seriously, how many times have you been charged like $300 for a pair of glasses!

  • +7

As an independent, self-employed optometrist based in Melbourne, be careful what you are comparing. All of these frames on this clearlycontacts website are runouts. They no longer have any official warranty, and they are poor international sellers. Clearlycontacts.com.au (based in Canada) would have gotten these frames for either nothing or $1 to $5 each. This is not to say they are not good quality, just they never sold well. How can this be? Well, just like fashion that is sold at a loss at the end of a stocktake sale, these frames are the last of the runouts. The manufacturer (eg Guuci or Armani) is happy that the frames will end up on someone's face rather than thrown out.

Similar situation with chains like Specsavers, and Merringtons before it. The frames are usually (seriously) substandard in quality, most of them are own-brand (like home brand) frames, cheap knock offs from China. Like many chinese imports in EVERY product category, they LOOK good but won't necessarily last.

Same with the lenses. There are VAST differences in quality of lenses, especially when you take into account coatings such as "anti-reflective" coatings. SOme are simply brilliant, some are a disaster waiting to happen.

And FINALLY - why do clearlycontacts.com.au run these promotions? As a loss leader to try and get you comfortable dealing with their company, hoping that many spec wearers will also try them for contact lenses too, which is Clearlycontacts' core business. 500 x $20 or $30 actual cost (and that is MAX) = maximum $15000 , which is a very small amount of money for a promotional campaign.

I hope this "insider's look" has shed a few ideas on this promotion.

Disclaimer: - I bought a pair during this promotion (cost to me $17) to test their service and quality of product.

    • +1

Thanks for the comment. Looking forward to hear your feedback on their product (esp the lenses).

      • No worries, I'll put it on my blog.

        Oh crap. that's right, I don't have a blog!!

But I will search up this listing and reply here. I also post some comments at www.whirlpool.net.au in their discussion forum, under the name "shmahoo"

        • +1

Shmahoo, I get your points but I can get similar 'in style' brand name specs in Singapore for example for much less than what it costs here (sometimes half price or so).

Also, as much as you bag the quality of cheap China knock offs at Specsavers, etc, you didn't actually tell us WHY regular chains like OPSM etc are SOOOO darn expensive.

Now give us THAT inside story please!

          • +1

@shawn_low: Firstly, I apologise if I'm taking this comments thread off topic. But to answer Shawn's question, OPSM are "SOOOO darn expensive" because of two reasons. One - They are the market leader in Australia, and they can do what they want. Two - they spend so much on promotion, they almost "need" to charge so much because they spend so much on advertising (similar to Coca Cola, Microsoft, McDonalds, where you are not just paying the cost of the product you end up in your hand).

Independents like myself have a markup on goods similar to most other personalised products. We don't buy things as cheaply as OPSM do (they OWN most of the big brands and pay on average 30% - 50% what us independents pay for frames and lenses).

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm bagging all the big chains and defending independents like myself, I'm just trying to explain it as I see it.

As to why equivalent products are SO much cheaper in other countries (best examples India, China, Vietnam etc), I believe this is more a reflection on living standards and workers' wages.

Happy to hear other's points of view.

PS - Shaun - how did you find out about this deal in the first place?

            • +1

@shmahoo: Hey Shmahoo, thanks for letting us know.

I understand that labour/wages and overheads are higher in Australia than in places such as China and India.

As much as I'd like to 'buy local', I just can't justify paying double what I'd pay when I visit family in Singapore! And I'm not talking double compared with OPSM prices.

Well, good luck with your business!

As for the deal: mates of mine buy contacts from these lot and they forwarded me an email. Apparently, if you sign up to the mailing list, they send out deals like this from time to time!

  • What the hell man. I ordered one on the 2nd. Transaction went through. I paid them the amount ($16). Just checked the online tracking on their website and it says my order is cancelled. Thats bull man. Waiting on there reply.

    • Shipping address to VIC or NSW?

      • VIC man. Still waiting on there reply.

        • Mine was cancelled too. But I think it was because I ordered two pairs to almost the same address
