Updated- Best Deal You *Haven't* Shared on OzBargain

Hi all,

Recently bought a bargain that was unable to be shared and it had me wondering: how many deals has there been out there that were consciously withheld on this site? With the seemingly cut-throat nature of some contributors here I fear that some genuinely good deals are being missed because of fear of rejection. It could also be that the bargainer did not have the time or convenience available to share.

These would be deals that would fit normal posting criteria (e.g. not clearance/one off lines). In the interest of encouraging an open and honest discussion I would encourage all to refrain from persecution. If you have one to share please add:

Deal:

Reason for not sharing:

Other relevant information:

If we get enough data we could start a poll and look at reasons as to why this happens and resolve to take our bargain sharing to the next level.

Update

Thanks for all responses so far; it seems as if the main reasons for not sharing are (in no particular order):

Fear of down votes/negativity
Lack of stock
inconvenient to post
complexity of deal aquirement
price error
Want to keep deal for self/don't want to spoil deal for continued use
Concerned about work repercussion
I think it would be good to continue this discussion about ways to overcome these reasons (e.g. give an option to post anonymously) to create a more inviting environment to post.

Primary school graduate degreelevel research maybe…

        • -2

          What a lot of pricks!

        • +1

          @Bargitrage:

You shouldn't just post whatever you find on the internet, and you hardly need a "graduate degree research". If it's not something straightforward, you should at least read the T&Cs

        • @ozhunter:
          Hi Ozhunter
I didn't post on OzBargain did I? As I was too rushed to check it out as mentioned! Unfunded Debitcard was used. Sheesh.
It IS legit apparently, and I may well get the Ipod shuttle for $1. So all is fine for me, just ozbargainers missed out dont you agree?

Anyway, it's all 100% fine. Thanks for comment above.

    • +1

Surely this is a joke missing /s

    • "About a week ago I entered a promo competition for a free Ipad, but for $1 signup you get a free ipod mini posted. Not sure about these details."

"Mind you I did get it wrong (ebay microsd scam)."

This is a joke right :P

Once found fairy platinum dishwasher tablets discounted to something like 5 cents per tab. Didn't post because I bought the entire stock. (And I've still got 3 bags left).

    • +1

      Broden 2.0?

      • +9

Nah, backpaqer didn't resell them at a 9000% mark-up, therefore he/she is not Broden.

        • Good point. That's a nice haul though.

    • +1

Great score bp; Fairy are the best tabs I've ever usesd.

  • +1

Anything to do with Telstra pre-paid not including the cheap starter packs…..the starter packs lob on the front page from other OzBargainers almost immediately. Telstra pre paid deals get absolutely smashed on this site and the bargain soon vanishes, so I lay low on those :/

    Remember, refrain from persecution, lol

  • +25

I no longer post any deals (or even comment on deals) related to my work as I would have to identify as an employee (per OzBargain rules) and I am not authorised to identify as an employee here (per company policies). I see plenty of good deals come up but it's not worth losing my job over.

      • +7

You're saying you want donga to jeopardise his job? Nup.

        • +4

Just make another account and disclose the situation to the mods? Or perhaps submit the deal to the mods, so that they can post it. If its a good bargain, be nice if people knew about it.

        • @gamechanger: I tried that once (disclose to a rep)…..didn't get posted by the mod, fair enough.

      • +2

        @nahi11: You are indeed.

      • Ha ha, I got 16 negs for my innocent well meaning comment, you only got 10 for your jovial comment. I am proud.
Jeez there's a lot of neglodites lurking about lately. My neg count in past few days for no good reason, is higher than the past year I think.
Cool down the negs unless there's a good reason.

        • We should meet up, I have similar schemes that you invested your money into.

        • +3

          I'm winning now

        • +1

          @nahi11:
          You bastard, you are too.

    • +1

I could post some deals from my store too, but likewise, I just cannot be bothered to declare myself as a store employee, as well as answer any questions on Ozbargain.

I don't want to come home from work to do more work :)

      • +1

U could send links of the deals to the mods

        • +1

Or to any other poster who can post on your behalf

    • so you used to then?

    • Just out of interest, who would know that you worked there if you don't declare it here? Why not just post the deals and not say that you work there?

      • +2

My company knows my username here. It's not worth the risk creating a new username just to post work deals because if they found out I would most likely be fired.

        • +1

Ah ok, I was thinking more along the lines of who from ozbargain would find out, but I understand now if your work know who "you" are.

I like your avatar btw, my kids all love anpanman.

        • +1

can u email links of the deals to the mods?

        • @[email protected]: I'd rather not. If anything showed up on here that my company didn't like I would probably be the first person they investigate. I originally thought I was doing them a bit of a favour by generating some extra clicks/business but that's not the way they see it so I now just stay well away from having anything to do with work outside of the office.

        • @donga100: How did they find out about your ozB account?

        • @gamechanger: Not sure. Probably wouldn't have been too hard though.

        • -1

What if you sent a private message to a random user in case they might want to post it?

        • @inherentchoice: Well that's extra effort too. He already explained that it would probably be investigated and traced back to him anyway.

Donga are you allowed/willing to share what company you work for? Or what industry if not willing to share the company name?

        • +1

@illumination: No, I'm not allowed to share what company I work for. It's transportation industry.

    • +1

Good idea. Better to keep your job secure

  • +2

I see some stuff in store every now and then, take a photo, then forget about it when I get home (it's easier to x check if it's been posted, if it's actually a good price from a pc rather than phone). I saw a curved 65 inch Hisense 4k tv at JB a few weeks back for ~$2000, but never got around to posting it. The picture wasn't much chop compared to the panasonic next to it either, so I'm not sure if I'd recommend it anyway. I've only posted 3 things so far, as I thought they were genuine bargains that others would appreciate.

    • +1

I do this all the time too, my phone's half full of photos of seemingly good deals that I saw and then forgot about.

  • +1

I have a way that takes off a $20 of my regular monthlty bill. It works every time. Knew it 4 years ago and I am still doing it (saved so far +$900). Didn't share it because I am afraid the company knows about it and loss it. Sorry guys :)

    • what type of bill - phone, insurance, power??

      • its for internet broadband

  • There's a random time on the weekend at the local Coles when the staff walks around with the discount sticker. This is a random time and I've only caught it a few times. Some times they put a 80% discount on items in the meat section. Can't post things like these cause it's random.

    • +3

And not enough quantity to benefit a large portion of people.

    • +2

That totally reminds me of playing certain RPGs.

  • +4

Some people on here really need to stop whinging and acting like a baby. How can a neg affect someone so much, unless you're incredibly insecure. "I'm not posting a deal because of negging and comments"… wow.

    • +5

What's your reason for not posting a deal?

      • +4

Many of us don't find any good deals/ don't shop that often.

If I came across a bargain, most certainly would post it here.

  • Kids all blacks jerseys all sizes for $20 ea delivered, and adult All Blacks jerseys $55 ea del. was selling kids ones on ebay and facebook buy sell, gumtree for $50-$65 ea. and adult ones for $110-$135 on ebay. still going strong

    • -1

Luckily no one cares about the All Blacks, broden.

  • +1

I think we should make everyone post at least 1 deal/year if they want to be able to click on deals and links. That would make so many people get off their butts (including me lol). I work 6 days a week but if I wanted access to some of the great stuff on here I sure would find something to post - neg/bad feedback or not. Furthermore, any deals people choose to keep to themselves because of hassle/fear of rejection/laziness might go up.

There's only a handful of members who post regularly and it's not that their deals are great all the time, but because they post so frequently someone somewhere finds use for one of their deals.

Its seems Ozbargain has grown so large that there are now 100's of unseen leechers/brodens/abusers. I have colleagues who have never contributed yet would snap up 5 or more items from amazing deals. If I can think of 2 people like that I can only imagine how many there really are.

And think of the number of potential deals there'd be!

    • +2

I think you'd find that would just lead to a large portion of very bad "deals" for the sake of posting making it harder to find the good ones.

  • +2

    flybuys points for Agl survey
Didn't think it was much of a deal until someone else posted it and received over 400 votes

    • +1

I don't think many people actually got the points just by using the link in the post.

  • +2

I usually see a lot of discounts at the supermarkets (safeway or coles) and don't post them here because I don't live in a main city and don't think many would go out of their ways to just get that discount or if they did it may have run out and would just cost them the trip since the savings I see valuable aren't the type that are store wide, its more restricted to single stores.

Some recent examples that I've seen in the last couple of months(from Woolworth and coles) include :

    • fill a bag with any fruit and vegetable you want (can fill it to the very top) for only a $1. This was great because they had some amazing cherry tomatoes and other great items to fill the bags with.
King prawns for $7/kg, seafood mix for $5/kg. a large cup with any salad of choice including seafood salad, greek salad pasta salads etc for a $1
whole chickens for $3, different types steaks and lamb chops that were 90% off the original price etc (many other deli products that were at leas 75% off and still fresh)
Mushrooms that were still very fresh and $2kg and you had different types to choose from including oyster mushrooms and some other fancy ones etc
  • Saw a couple of deals but didn't post because I'm not sure whether it is actually a deal for other people. What is good for me, is not necessarily good for other people was my thought.

Plus I've never read the rules on posting deals so I don't really know what should/should not be included in the post. In the end I saw other people posting the deal here though :)

    • FYI, Deal Posting Guidelines.

The mods and power users fix/tweak most of the deals for better clarity so as long as you know what the deal is and can explain it in basic English, we'll figure it out.

Everyone is welcome to contact us for an opinion or a question prior to submitting.

By doing market research, I have managed to get enough petrol to run my 2 cars, lawn mower and also fill 6 20L jerry cans, couple of times a year.

    • +1

      what?

      • +3

I think ariann means he/she does paid market research or got it for free from doing surveys etc.

  • +12

I find it amusing the people who say variations on "you are thin skinned if you don't like the negs". It takes effort to find a bargain, determine it is something other people might like, and then fill in the forms. It might also require follow up editing if people want further clarification etc. If the post ends up with a bunch of people "negging" the idea then "why should I bother" kicks in.

There does appear to be a core of people who post here, and I am grateful for their efforts, but there are a number of times I've thought - "I'll post that" and then, frankly, not bothered because I don't want to deal with the fallout. I have no problem with my comments being "negged" but I am annoyed that I'm probably missing out on good deals because people are too intimidated to post.

The thing to remember is the OPs are doing us a favour.

  • +1

I have found a few deals recently that I have also not posted. Unfortunately the first thing that comes to my mind when deciding whether to post it or not is the fallout from actually posting it and wondering if I am going to be abused or not because the deal may have been slightly cheaper a while back.

I can only assume I will get a "this was 11 cents cheaper in August 2011, no deal. Neg from me!!!!"

  • +21

I once posted a deal to get Battlefield 3 Limited Edition from the EA Mexican server for $17 AUD. At the time this was pretty bloody cheap. Some people pissed and moaned about having to go through a VPN and the post went nowhere. Still I reckon it was the best deal I ever posted.

On the other hand, one time I posted about some expired Squeeze and Stir soup and I got like over a hundred recs. My first and only popular deal badge.

I nearly got another popular deal badge for posting a Peppa Pig app free on itunes. JV bitched about it and it got moved to the forums because it was always free. So I lost my ferking badge. Up yours JV.

    • Well, free apps are usually not allowed (just because there are so many of them, and the site can be easily spammed with them) but I do agree that it is a bit silly moving stuff when there is so many votes for it already, because it shows that people do actually want to know about it and appreciate you for posting it.

I have posted some VPN required stuff before and I think most people have warmed up to using it nowadays (esp. with so many free and decent vpn deals floating around), and those who complain do tend to be negged and buried in the comment section.

        Deal Posting Guidelines.

Always free software, apps, videos etc. shouldn't be posted as a deal. The moderators need to be consistent with acting on these otherwise it creates confusion. The deals don't disappear, they just get moved to the free software/websites forum where all comments and links remain.

        • +1

I understand from the mod's position. Better to be consistent or else it might become easy to play favourites and such.

          Thanks for your reply :)

  • +7

    TL:DR

    • Point 1 Be nicer with your comments
    • Point 2 Stress less about negs
    • Point 3 Don't hog / try monetise from deals as it spoils it for everyone
    • Point 4 JV, sort your life out

  • Some things here and there. Usually because I am not sure whether there is enough stock (and it is unclear)

eg. Squash racquets (they are really cheap from sportsdirect! and they were fast with shipping too)

However, I do tend to not bother posting some deals that I believe isn't front page worthy. (Not that I post many..) Hence, average votes for my posts are 42.6, but I average less than 0.1 posts per week

Arbing online bookies "first deposit"/"first bet" promotions.

Reason for not sharing: quite complicated, limited to certain states, risk involved both of contravening Ts & Cs and also becoming online gamblers if not strong willed.

  • I bought the Samsonite 72 hours 55cm cabin bag for $179 (RRP $329). The next cheapest price I could find online was $195. Not really a bargain I thought because it was only $16 in savings but a good deal for me because I had been wanting to buy it for a while.

  • +4

I think the most audacious bargain hunter I ever came across was Rene Warmuz. Back in the early 80's he spotted an advert for Magna Disks (5.25" floppy disks) at 50% in an Australian Personal Computer magazine. A pack of 10 cost $29.95. He bought 2000 copies of the $2.95 magazine, paid his brother 50 cents per magazine (might have been less) to cut the adverts out and then fronted up to the outlet with 2000 coupons and bought 40,000 disks. They tried to put him off but he stood firm and they relented as there was no limit stated on the coupons. He then resold most of stock for about $20 a box which to most was an absolute bargain back then. Sadly I just googled Rene and was sad to find that he died of cancer only a couple of years ago. :(

  • +2

Now I'm wondering how many of these "best deals you DIDN'T post" will NOT be posted on this forum topic for the same reasons that they haven't been posted as bargains.. ;)

coca-cola colour your summer instant win competition, iirc I won about 12% of the prizepool(70/550 prizes) for the NZ side of the promotion. Call me a broden but it was the easiest 6k of stuff I've won within the set rules and competition timeframe(4 months).

  • The mods just had a discussion about some users not wanting to post a specific deal.

I guess the issue comes down to 2 camps:

    • Those who are associated with the deal such as employees or some other relationship. I can empathize as my previous job had a couple of deals which I would have liked to post however it would have opened up a can of worms. While rare, we have had to deal with a couple of situations where an employee posted a great deal for the company they worked at, only for the management (or different management) to catch wind and order the employee to remove the deal putting their job at risk.

    • Those who can't be bothered, not sure if it is a deal, don't have time, lazy, worried about feedback etc.

We may trial creating a thread, like this one, where people can post a comment/link about a deal they found. We can also create an email address (or use existing contact form) so people can forward the deals to OzBargain. One of the mods will then redact any personal information and post it as a comment.

Any user can then post deals found in the comments as a deal. We have a similar situation with Udemy. Deals from Udemy instructors/reps are banned due to the influx of SPAM, so we created this thread where instructors can post their deal in the comments. TA and others go through the comments to pickup any good deals and then post a Udemy deal with a bunch of free courses.

    Thoughts?

    • +1

It wouldn't change my mind but sounds like a good compromise for others.

    • I had this idea back in 2010 7 years ago but I only noticed now 2 years after it was implemented about it. It needs more visibility.

Why has it time come in 2015 and not 2010?

For me, this website is a source for bargain. I have not find any bargain anywhere else. The community of bargainers working really good to save us $$$.

If I shall find a good deal… definitely share it though. Sometimes, i find a good deal and by the time i come home and ready to post it….it has already been posted with XX likes.

eBay auctions - if you are patient enough, you can get some items for significantly less than the 'Buy It Now' price. I've picked up brand new items at 20% of their normal price, just because it was on an auction ending at some weird time in the night. Can't post those as they are hit and miss.

Thanks for all responses so far; it seems as if the main reasons for not sharing are (in no particular order):

    • Fear of down votes/negativity
    • Lack of stock

If it's lack of stock or price error, I don't think it should be posted. Not much point when there's a small chance you can even get the item.

Anonymous posting is asking for spam.

Looking at recent deals posted, neg votes make up less than 1%.

With the complexity concern, most products just need the product, price, and website/location. If you do post a complex deal, it should be detailed as there isn't much point posting it if a lot of users don't even understand how to obtain it.

      • Bingo :)

And I really don't think many get put off so much by any negativity. I'm seeing less and less of the "first post be kind" line (even before mods get to it). And jv doesn't seem to be first to comment on as many deals as he/she used to.

  • Best deal I found was 2015 hyundai i20 5d auto active brand new for $12,888 from a car dealer 3 months ago. They had 4 left after I bought mine. I just needed a car at the time and wasnt sure if it was genuinely a good deal or not, just bought it.

But i recommended a few friends who went a few days later and the best they could do was 14,888. So sorry guys :(

    • Here on Ozbargain we don't forget or forgive.

  • The other reason for not posting a bargain is because of the risk that if you do post it, the rest of the industry (either competing retailers or suppliers) effect a backlash on the place you can get the awesome bargain. You might be doing a great favour for us being able to source something way cheaper than normal…but it could stuff up someone's supplier agreement and find they either get shut out or sanctioned.

A mate owns an Apple franchise and he can give me a modest discount on stuff…but he's quite paranoid about making sure I tell no-one of the deal I get because he would be open to repercussions from Apple for undercutting the status-quo.

  • +1

    Good thread!

    • I've found a few free product sample offers online, but haven't posted them because they appear to be small businesses and I didn't want them to be inundated with thousands of requests for samples.

    • Another reason: Targeted freebies/samples/resources. I previously posted a freebie - it was some free resources targeted to military and ex-military personnel. I thought it would be useful to some of the people here who are ADF or know someone who is ADF, but a few people reported it and so I requested that it be removed.
I've since found similar free resources but haven't posted them because they are specifically aimed at people in certain groups eg. those working in certain occupations (eg. teachers), people who have their own business etc.
It's difficult because I know these offers would be useful to a handful of people, but if I post them they'll possibly (probably?) be abused and the offer will be withdrawn/unavailable for those who would benefit.

    • I also found a couple of great bargains (clearance items) recently at my local shops, but didn't post them. I live on the Bellarine Peninsula and thought that there might not be many OzBargainers down this way compared with the major cities. I work in Melbourne though, and if I saw a bargain on my way to work, I'd probably post it because I figure it'd benefit more people.

  • Well, its no surprise to see rationalisation is still in fashion.

I don't post deals, because most of the deals I find are 'meh' and I don't want to clog up the site with things that might be a deal. Other times I'm not familiar enough with the product to tell whether its a deal (like this lens https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/Lenses/samsung/samsung-nx-…. Normally $400, now $150, seems like a good price, but how many people here own a samsung camera?) or I'm trying to decide whether I want to buy it first before unleashing the hordes upon it. Then theres the (admittedly small) work of crafting the post, formating, uploading photos, checking dupe status etc.

Alot of the deals I don't post, end up already having been posted earlier in an obscure post, and I'm not sure if its worth highlighting.

    • but how many people here own a samsung camera?

I own a samsung :-)…. (although that was the kit lens with my camera)
