    • You shouldn't have waited. You needed to be connected BEFORE the 10th by the sound of it.

      • I received the bonus 5GB data as the starter pack behaves like a $30 recharge. Wait 1 day and get 5GB bonus. I reckon it is worth it.

  • Is this credit on play store available for the recent Telstra deal with the 7gb? I've never heard of this, sounds amazing!

    • only prepaid

Is there any reason to stick with Boost after this change then? Seems like it makes Boost basically pointless as you get more of everything at 40$.

    • Exactly my concern, I moved to Boost last week due to their weekend data (I'm on their $20 to see how I go).

The weekend data is a good thing though - I find myself on my WiFi at home so not too fussed on the evening data credit.

      • Yeah, I've been with Boost for a while but I just recharged yesterday. Oh well, one month from now I'll switch to Telstra.

    • My thoughts too - I was thinking about moving to Boost, but this will make me stay on Telstra - which explains the logic of the new pricing if many people where jumping ship.

  • Another person still on Encore. A quick question for you Freedom peeps, does retrieving missed calls from message bank cost come out of your call credit or recharge credit? (It's a pain to have to call yourself to get it to come out of call credit on Encore…)

    • +1

Just program it in, that's what my wife did, and it's dead easy.

      • Sorry for being dense, but how do you program it? Say your number is X, and your password is Y, do you just set up a number in your address book like X#Y and dial it?

        • +1

          04XXXXXXXX,#[6 digit PIN]#

    • What? How do you call yourself to access your messagebank?

    • +2

It comes out of call credit. There's als the free number you can call to access VoiceMail: 1800 135 102

  • How does it compare to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/217715 ?

Almost the same price, but the latter has much more data etc. But maybe not any google play billing?

    • Correct. No Google play on the 12 month plan and it also doesn't include international calls.

      • And I presume not on the 24 month plan either.

Stupid query perhaps, but does Telstra sell different levels of service quality? Eg: Business accounts > freedom plus > telstra resellers?

        • Not sure, but judging by the fact that they open their 4G to both their postpaid and prepaid customers since day 1, I guess they provide the same service quality to their own customers.

For resellers, however, it depends on the agreement. Their new agreement with Woolworths, for example, only has 3G connection, but Boost has 4G.

  • i was about to do it today, thanks will do the porting tomorrow and switch back to amaysim after this :)

  • Does the $40 recharge not include any data?

    • 3Gb, the link only show call changes, data wont change.

      • actually 3GB/day/3Gb night from Telstra " recharge before 25 January 2016 and get Bonus Night Data to use between 8pm and 8am AEDT"

      • Wow so this deal is better than Boost and Aldi now.

  • Either Telstra is looking at cutting some of the extra bonuses from their prepaid plans, or too many people are switching to Aldi/Amaysim/Boost. This is great value.

This may just make me switch from Encore

    • I just did…

      • Did you just switch your plan? Or did you recharge too to activate it?
I think you need to wait until after the 10th for the new plan to be in effect?

    • I just did…

  • Unfortunately it looks like you have to spend $30 of real recharge money to get the 5 GB bonus.
You never know what glitches there'll be though.
I'll activate one of these $30 SIMs on 10 Nov and see.

    • This offer is available to all existing Freedom Plus customers who activated or switched to the offer before 10 November.

  • What's the expiry date of the 5GB bonus? 1 month from date of recharge?

    • 28 days usually… but never a given with the "glitches" ;)

    • The bonus will be applied to your service number up to 48 hours after you recharge, is all for use in Australia within 28 days and does not roll over.

Or we may find an easter egg in December as stated by snappy

  • This is not a deal if you make a lot of international calls due to the credit limit for such calls.

My wife's still on the old Freedom Nights bonus offer, with about 15 days left until credit expiry. To get the 5GB bonus sounds like she needs to be on the new Freedom Plus offer before 10th November.

So do you think it will work if I switch her offer before midnight, then do the recharge after midnight in order to get the new call inclusions and 5GB bonus? Unless of course, the system screws up and I'm unable to recharge for a few hours.

    • Changed my wife's offer before midnight and recharged at 12.06am. Got the new call inclusions, but did not get the 5GB bonus. Reading the recharge confirmation, it said recharge was done on 9th November. Maybe a glitch since I am on DST.

      Following up with 24x7 chat.

  • Finally switched from Cap Encore. I'm guessing that's the main motive behind the recent deals - to move as many of us off that offer.

For the record, I do not appreciate Telstra changing the terms of an existing offer without giving customers the choice.

  • credit expiry is down to 28 days, meh.

    • Apparently 31 days if auto recharge is setup

  • Recharge credits, was one of the reasons I wanted to goto telstra prepaid, after my contract expires.
First I learned of it, was that u can top up ur data using those credits (this was a while back) Now u can use on google play, that's even better.

I'm assuming there is an app to monitor, these recharge credits, like u do with data/call credits ???

Activated today. The starter pack behaves like a $30 recharge so you get the bonus 5GB data (6.3 GB in total). I'm glad I waited a day. Thanks OP. Thanks OZB. Thanks Telstra.

    • 7.6 GB from $15 starter kits, below $2GB before even adding data packs for nightime viewing. Treatment off-contract starts to look very good. \o/

  • Noob here, just wondering whether when changing from 1c text to freedom plus, my credit will be kept or whether it wipes itself and you start at $0

    • +1

Dial #100# on your phone. The main balance you get to keep (assuming you recharge before the service expires). Most likely all the other bonuses will disappear when you switch over.

      • Thanks mate, appreciate it

  • Keeps getting better and better, Telstra wants our business desperately….😂

    • It is interesting yes. My offnet telco could have easily included in my cap new provision for infinite calling, for one. I'd have used 10%. Instead, it just chose to taunt me with Combos at~ 1/3 to 1/4 the data compared with freedom's plus [2-3G vs 6-11G]. - Out-of-date-..wickedly tiny addition packs + $0.00 for digital content,..{*BORRRING}.
Occasionally, tel-cos make making up one's mind extra-easy stuff. :>

  • Just a warning - changing your prepaid offer resets all bonuses, credits, plus packs - everything.

I still had a bit left so went to chat to them online and the agent ended up crediting me with the equivalent of $30 cap - very happy :-)

    • Just a warning - changing your prepaid offer resets all bonuses, credits, plus packs - everything.

Yep when you change offers switch your mobile off and data too ! then when it reboots check that you are on the correct plan by doing the #100# from your dialler (then recharge if ok)

-saves arguing later with Telstra. ;)

  • Just completed my transfer from Virgin. Loving the speeds and had no problem getting the advertised deal. Bonus was I picked up a multi fit sim starter kit for $9.50 at Target so pretty happy (don't need the nano sim , but that pack was only $15 too).

  • Can someone please confirm you still get to keep your recharge credit amount of $30, $40 or $50?
The reason I ask is that it's not listed as an individual amount when I look at the details of this new offer. On my current Prepaid Cap+ offer its listed as $40 recharge gets you a total of $550 ($40 Recharge and $510 Cap+ Bonus Credit) This $40 I can then use on the Google Play Store and don't want to switch to this offer until I've confirmed you get to keep this recharge amount.

Phone billing for google play has been around for years . Hell even windows mobile

When are we going to have ITunes iPhone store ????

I am guessing Telstra know a lot of user have iPhone or they are pushing user to use android for better commission

    • no, it's one of crApple's many limitations. they don't allow carrier billing. nothing to do with Telstra.

  • Hi, is the Telstra Pre-paid SIM Starter Kit for Tablets the same? Can the Tablet stater kit be used the same way as a normal starter kit? ie use in Mobile Phone, and also activate the Freedom Plus plan?
    thanks.

  • So as someone new to Oz, let me get this straight.
I pay Telstra Prepaid, say, $30 per month for services, and then, they give me $30 a month of credit to spend in the Play Store? Just like that? What's the catch? Isn't this too good to be true? :D

    • +1

      Yep.

Isn't this too good to be true?

Nope. Not many people outside OzB/Whirlpool know about it I think.

      • Pretty awesome information. Cheers!

      • Switching to this Telstra freedom plus plan for the starter kit I have here.
Is there any set uo5 required for the Google play credit, or just selest to charge cost of the apps to the Telstra phone?

        • Yep, when it asks for billing details you should be able to select to bill Telstra account so long as you are using the device that the SIM card is in.

      • It says Telstra billing is not activated to contact provider. Telstra claim I cant use my phone credit for Google play purchases.

        • Well, that's just plain wrong. It's on their website and in their Our Customer Terms.

What process have you gone through so far?

        • @magicmoose:
I've tried online chat x2 and also speaking to CSR.
Both have refused. Both claimed as it's not post paid, I can't have it charged to my Telstra account, and my ore paid credit does not count.
Since it doesn't work, apparently my phone is at fault. LG G4.

Next step is to actually quote the Ts and C's to them.
(Can you help with a quick link)

        • @albanyson: Google Telstra Google play, the first result clearly indicates it's got prepaid as well. Maybe show them that?

        • @magicmoose:
          Yep. Finally got it sorted.
Only taken all day to finally get someone on the chat that understand it correctly.
So frustrating being told information that was clearly wrong

        • @magicmoose:
          Just bought my first app……

          Payment by Telstra credit.

        • @albanyson: Do you know how they sorted it out?

        • @m13: I was eveblntially put through to a prepay CSR,who intially started describing how to log into Google play, then how to select the Telstra billing, thinking I didn't know what to do….
Then he twigged that it wasn't working as I had been continuously saying and then he quickly activated it.

Once at that point it was easy. Up until then, it was so frustrating.

  • Never used a pre-paid before. Can it work like a post-paid plan? I mean direct debit same amount each month and essentially don't have to worry about much? Sorry for the dumb question.

    • Yes, you can set up automatic recharging, which is basically set-and-forget.
