Wow, they've finally beaten the old $50 Cap Encore 3.8GB deal!

    • +1

I'm confused. The new Freedom Plus gives you 8GB Data (4GB Day + 4GB Night). I'm still on Cap Encore and I have started getting 1.3GB = 3GB (Bonus).

  • +4

This is a great deal for new customers, I just wish Telstra would offer existing customers something worthwhile (for a change).

    • +1

I think it says you can recontract (even if on Telstra) but check that

      • +11

        "Offer is for new customers"

So you'll fall into one of 3 camps
1- the person says you can't do it
2- the person which says you can do it but bothces the order and takes months for the data/billing to be fixed
3- the person who says you can do it and it's successfully applied.

It's a lucky dip betwen those three.

Great deal the, I'm going to port the wife and my phone away to come back as new customers.

        • +3

I got #2 last time! They still can't add my bonus data, so I get $20 credit each month instead! Haha..

        • I think your approach is best (port away and return) guaranteed result that way.

        • My 24 month (Telstra) contract finishes in less than 30 days.

Plan to cutover to a BYO arrangement immediately after.

Wonder if I would be considered "existing" or "new" in these circumstances?

Worst case I can go onto a free prepaid for a day, then go back onto this I suppose :)

        • Well i made the livechat rep clearly say i'll be receiving the 9gb data no matter what

with him repeating what i said and also saying im correct.

then made him add notes onto my account and i emailed myself the transscript from the convo.

Im an existing customer, already on the L plan But just "re-ordered" it again.

        • Can you pity us the English learners and explain what "bothces" mean? Not found in my dictionary:)

        • -1

          Deleted to be civil…

        • @enveloped: botches typo

        • @kcbworth: Nope, you are an Existing customer. Port out then come back to be sure of success.

      • Says "Offer is for new customers only"

        • +1

If you are currently out of contract ring them up and tell them you are going to cancel unless you can have this deal. Certainly worth a shot.

        • @try2bhelpful: Feb 16 for my current $45 BYO

        • @scottb721: I still think it is worth talking to them. You are upgrading your plan so they might be agreeable. Would be interested to find out if they let you do it.

        • +2

@try2bhelpful: The Rep said her computer said no unfortunately.

        • +6

$2 voda sim… port away and then come back….. Worth the hassle for $200 saving alone!

      • +1

What you can do is go to optus or Voda, transfer your service to pre-paid. Keep it for a day then transfer it back to Telstra. This will get you the deal but obviously has a bit of work associated with it.

    • Is prepaid considered to be new customer?

      • Porting if it's not.

      • Talked to online Sales. Confirmed prepaid customer is eligible for bonus data and $200 welcome credit

        • +2

Just talked to a different sales rep and a customer service rep. they both confirmed Prepaid is NOT eligible! It's not the first time that I had conflicted information and unhelpful service from their staff. They really need to have a proper training system

        • @cloud226: Depends if prepaid was with boost? We took ours from boost to post paid byod in sept to get dbl data offer for new customers (applies to the number only. I have a post paid service in contract and it didnt stop the other number under my name from being considered NEW)

    • They gave me a $10 increase to $59. Thanks Telstra.

    • I'm an existing customer and i got a call about 3 weeks ago asking if i wanted to get on this plan. Didnt want to sign a contract though. Also i dont recall them offering the $200 credit.

    • i wish they didn't charge $10 per moth for data sharing with extra sim …… I have a mi fi modem so i don't use the phone battery when tethering …. optus is $5 one off for data sharing across sims.

      :-(

but this brings it close to Optus $50 deal if all you want is a sim for your phone and data.

    • I'm switching to voda for a day and switching back. called telstra and they said that qualifies

  • "All to use in Australia (excludes use overseas)"

    What does that mean exactly?

I think I'm using Cap Encore prepay still and ring NZ a fair bit.
Wondering if theres anything for me in this deal?

I was just about to go grab a vodafone sim as on their $50 prepay deal it appears I can make unlimited overseas calls to certain countries.

    • Your Monthly Call Allowance and Monthly Data Allowance can’t be
used overseas. Your Monthly Call Allowance doesn’t include calls,
SMS or MMS to international numbers, premium numbers (eg 19xx
      numbers) and some satellite numbers, 1234, 12 455 and 12 456
numbers or content charges (including third party charges). Charges
for all calls, SMS and MMS not included in your Plan can be found at
      telstra.com.au/customer-terms

      • Thanks for trying.
I tried having a squiz at those customer terms.
Its like trying to read a book.

Too many words makes my mind go numb.

Just want a simple service I can ring my sister in NZ.

Your saying I can't do on this one?

        • +1

You can but its on top of the $1000 as far as i can see.

        • +2

Gotcha - thanks for the info.

I just managed to get hold of Telstra on their 1800 number after giving up on their 1300.

They inform me that as I have a Telstra prepaid I wouldn't qualify as a new customer anyway.

No worries as I'll stick to my Cap Encore prepay and grab a Vodafone sim for my other phone to take advantage of their prepay with unlimited calls to NZ

If their service seems ok, I'll dump Telstra and maybe one day I'll be considered for a new customer deal

      • +1

Really? No international call credit at all? That sucks big time.

  • Is Telstra now into psychic communication with this "Medium" Plan.
Or is this just a Halloween deal?
Maybe I'll call a dead relative.

    • +3

      +1 effort

    • +6

The Medium is needed when you have a problem and need to contact Telstra, they in another world

  • $200 about covers paying out my old contract, time to switch.

  • +4

Why not go with the Freedom plus? You get 50$ real credits for Google Play,Itunes,Microsoft Stores. $1500 Bonus credits including overseas calls plus 4gb of data and another 4gb of night bonus data to use between 8pm and 8am. Must charge before January though.

    • I don't use Google Play,Itunes,Microsoft Stores.
$1500 to spend on overseas calls sounds good as does the 4gb of data.

      Thanks for the heads up

      I'll look into it.

      • No worries,

BTW calling to New Zealandis $3.49 per minute and it's coming out of your $1500( that's 400+ minutes).

You can also use your $50 real credit to buy Line calling credit(Can be used to call normal phone numbers, including locals and overseas). $1.28 gets you 100 Line Credits( about 10 minutes call depends on the rates). You probably can get about 8000-9000 Line credits with that $50 real credits. Just activate Telstra billing on Google Play.

    • Thats a good option too. I don't really use night credit (as home wifi) so doesn't suit but for many people it would be great.

Also remember, with the $200 welcome credit, this effectively works out at approximately $33.40 pm.

      • where does it say $200 welcome credit for Freedom Plus?

        • Hes talking about the medium plan

    • How do you use recharge credit for these things? I thought it's only for "Plus Package" which is international roaming on "freedom plus"

      • It seems for Google Play only. Bad news for Apple users

    • Does this mean I can use the $50 recharge credits every month to buy something for $50 off itunes every month for free?

      • Yes, $50 to use with Google Play and in Apps purchase.

Cureently Works with Google Play when Telstra billing is used. It should work for iTunes Stores also.

      • +1

Doesn't work for iTunes/App Store, Telstra only does carrier billing for Google play and Windows Store.

    • Hi I'm new to these ozbargain deals, would you have links to this Telstra freedom plan and how I would get there bonuses? or is that am expired deal? I prefer prepaid, I hate bill shock as with postpaid, cheers Ed

    • +1

I agree going to Freedom Plus $30 prepaid for 3 months now after so many years of being on postpaid $49 was best decision I ever made.

I only just realized now that my credit accumulated($90 worth) can be used on Google Play too. This plus Google Opinion Surveys has made me never spend a cent.

Here is some more handy hints

    • Agreed but the credit can only be used on Google Play and Microsoft Store, doesn't work with iTunes/App store purchases on iOS. Is there a way to use your pre-paid credits for the iTunes/iOS App store purchases? Please enlighten me if you are as I would love to get that going.

      Cheers.

  • 24x7 Chat is being hammered right now. I suppose that happens with a deal like this.

    • +1

We have until december 31st :P

  • On chat with them now to see if they will credit $5 a month for an extra sim to data share with the tablet (Optus provides it for a one-off fee of $5 whereas it is a monthly $5 for Telstra)

    • Let us know what they say, I'm in the same boat.

      • No luck. The deal still seems worth it though.

        • aaron
can i get a $5/mo sim credited on to data share with my tablet
          rep
You can get a data share sim as long as you have Go Mobile plan on your account.
          aaron
and how much would that be (or is it free)
          rep
          Any Go mobile plan will do, then you can choose on the data share sim plans;

          $5 - 100MB
          $15 - 1GB
          $35 - 4GB
          $55 - 8GB

    • if they do the sim I'd switch from optus to telstra …… I've never hit 8GB of data but better 4G coverage would be nice.

  • +6

Better than Boost $40 plan. There. I said it.

    • Totally agree

    • +1

I'm on the boost plan and I'm porting!

  • So glad I held off from their previous double data deal. This is exactly the extra incentive I needed before signing up :)

  • Pity they dont include international calls. Otherwise very good deal for me.

  • +1

Can't decide between this and $40 boost deal posted the other day…

    • Dont go there (Boost), the sign up is horrible. At least with Telstra, ya with the main provider.

    • Boost is fine however international calls is not included and you don't get any credit to use on Google Play unlike Telstra.

  • +1

It's a very very attractive plan, but is there perpetuity for the bonus data? From what I understand, after a 12/24 month period the bonus inherently expires and you're left with 2.5GB per month.

    • +1

Possibly, unsure. I'd say it will probably expire and you;ll go back to 2.5gb. However more than likely you'll be able to find another good plan then.

    • +1

      Telstra site says…

Bonus Data: Available to new and recontracting customers on selected plans. Bonus data will remain on your account until you recontract, cancel your plan or move to an ineligible plan. Unused data expires monthly. Offer ends December 31, 2015

      • I asked Telstra and they said you will continue to receive the bonus data as for as long as you stay on this plan, you must have to sign up by the end of the year

        • That wasn't what they told me. The lady on livechat said it will expire after the contract finishes, being 12 or 24 months. And I tend to believe this answer is more reasonable.

        • +3

@evatron: Just keep chatting to different reps until you find someone who says you will continue to receive the bonus data, then save the transcript / ask for a reference number and quote it when they don't give you what you were promised.

Then, demand extra compensation to compensate for "lies endured" and "time wasted" with Telstra.

        • Of every plan I've been on with Telstra (and I'm up to about 5 or so now) this has been the case, I get exactly the same benefits/bonuses until I re-contract.

  • +2

Does this deal mean that you would get 7GB of data every month or is it just for one month?

    • You get 7gb data every month

  • How does the $200 credit work? Does it just give you the fist four months free?

    • +2

You'd pay the first month or two with cash, and then you'll get 4 months free. They won't credit it straight away.

      • Alright, cheers

    • +4

It gives you the fist alright!

      • +1

Gonna be a long 12 months!

  • Doesn't say. Normally 2nd and 3rd months

  • dayme contract expires in March next year..

  • +1

It's a good deal, if you are a "medium" user.

For my wife and my 19 YO son, I still think that the $40 Boost Prepaid is the best. I don't have to worry, like, when my son spends hours and hours on the phone. Internet speed is as good, and so is the coverage.

    • I text a lot, browse a lot, and call a fair amount. Having said that, I've never used more than ~$300 of my current encore $950 credit.

    • +2

Internet speed on boost is not as good. While boost does use 4g, does not use 4gx as if on telstra direct. I don't think this matters as 4g plenty fast enough but just correcting.

      • depends if you have a phone with 700mhz 4G band support or not (samsung S5 does, iPhone 6, etc).
Telstra prepaid is down to $79 and has 4GX support

  • As an existing customer I managed to resign my contract to a $60 with 7gig and unlimited calls and text through talking to online chat.
Whilst not as good as this offer, beats my old contract and the hassle of changing providers.

    • -1

Which phone does that include ?

  • -1

So why would someone choose this (other than OS calls) over the the $40 Boost plan? (Unlimited Txt/calls and 3GB + 8GB of data)

Edit: Sorry, Effective monthly cost of $33. I misread the $200 as being $200 call credits.

    • +1

Boost bonus data is only on weekends also

  • +2

Excellent. Just ported over my wife's mobile from TPG (old T3G plan) as they were just dragging their arse in their offers to existing customers. Even so. for only $3 more (for first 12 months) I get a stack more data and won't be on a Vodafone network. Win win.
Just for those going through the order process. They give you the option of 2 $40 Data Share sims which are essentially free for 3 months. Then they will hammer you as I don't think the $40 plans are that great. You can change the $40 to a $5 sim only plan if you want to use the 7gb data on something else like an iPad or other mobile broadband device. While you can change the order initially to the $5 sims I just confirmed on Telstra chat that you can do that once the 3 months expire. So bonus 1gb for that share device for 3 months.

    • This is a bit confusing to me, but sounds important, as I definitely would like to benefit from free data sharing

      • +1

Basically what it means is that you get your main mobile service (Telstra Medium Plan $50) and sim with 7gb data. Then you can get extra mobile service sims (data share) which share in the data from the 7gb of the main mobile service. Telstra has confused things because there are about 5 different options of Data Sharing plans (sim). The most basic is $5 and you only get to share data of the main plan (7gb). The there 4 other Data sharing plans up to $55 which let you share in the main plan (7gb) but also have between 1 and 8gb of their own data as well. THEEEEEN there is the $40 Data sharing plan (which is what Telstra tries to sell you when you join this Telstra Medium $50 plan) . Its in the first or second page of the plan registration. Actually the default is TWO $40 Data Sharing sims. The $40 Data sharing plan shares in the main plan data (7gb), has its own 1gb data and unlimited amount of calls. This is probably ideal for a second member of the family with their own mobile phone. Not ideal for just a mobile broadband device like ipad or mobile broadband modem. One of the $5-$30 Data sharing sims would be better as you don't need voice for those.
The only thing you have to be careful about is that after 3 months the $40 Data Sharing plans are NO LONGER FREE. And so you will end up with $40 or $80 added to your $50 main service plan depending on how many Data Sharing sims you got in the inital offer (thats assuming you activated them both). So if you are happy with paying $40 in top of them $50 Telstra medium service plan then fine (probably ok for a second mobile phone in the family). Otherwise you SHOULD either cancel the Data sharing plans (sims) or downgrade to one of the cheaper options. I will probably go for the $5 which will be great as its for the ipad and could easily share in 7gb of monthtly data. Lastly, the 7gb Medium plan is a 12 month option (or 24 month). After that it will revert to 2.5gb unless you change plans again. So then be careful with the data sharing as you might easily go over.

        • Ok so the free $40 ones are good for the first 3 months, but must be cancelled before this as they will no longer be free, at which point go for the $5 one.

          Cool ta

        • @kcbworth:

I think you can ask them to change the plan on the Mobile Data sim to $5 as then you don't need a whole new sim if you completely cancel the service.
