I have one of these running the latest iOS, and it's almost painful to use. For the price, no deal.

yeah even my ipad 3 is getting a bit sluggish, I think most apps wouldn't even install on this. Better off spending $240 on a new windows tablet.

      • +1

Yep, I wouldn't touch an iPad 2 these days

      • My ipad 4 is very sluggish for browsing

        • A relative has an iPad 4 with the latest update which I regularly help them with and browsing isn't sluggish on there's. Seems pretty much the same as before the update. The good thing about the latest update was it freed some space so the iPad has a few gbs extra space now.

      • Can anyone suggest a good "new windows tablet"?

same size screen but with better resolution, more storage and can accept SD cards, much faster and runs windows programs.

        • Check out the Chuwi Hi8 mine cost $US82 Android 4.4 + Windows, fast brilliant res, takes 64G SD card. I love it. There's a few diff Cinese suppliers competing on price

      • $240 for a new windows tablet? Where are those? Most of the ones I've seen are around double the price with a low 1280 screen resolutions.

You can find android tablets and iPad under $500 with HD 1920 resolution or above (there's an android one for $300) but windows hardly exist and at around 700 is overpriced.

        • Chuwi Hi8 1920x1200 Win 8.1 + Android dual boot $120-130 AUD

        • @damong:

I'm not sure if going down the china path is right for everyone. From reading tech tablets website I get the impression that there is an element of risk as to what you get on import and it probably doesn't help at the moment that there has been delays on the cherry trail tablets because of overheating issues.

The way I see it is you might save some money by going down the china import route but if its not right product or has issues it may end up costing you more if you can't return and still have to get something else. May be ok for someone who has spare cash that they don't mind writing off but may not be for someone who's on a tight budget.

Hmmm… I have an iPad 2 (though it's the 64GB or 128GB model - don't have it with me to check) and since putting iOS 9 on (9.1 that is), it seems to run nicely.

With iOS 7 and iOS 8 I found it was getting slower and slower but iOS 9 seems to have brought it back to life.

I use it for web browsing, Clash of Clans and a few other apps.

iPad 3 4G 16Gb is selling for around $200 on eBay (just sold mine in mint condition).
      This is not a deal.

  • I was just about to investigate the going price for these.
I have an iPad 2 64GB cellular to get rid of. Was hoping for $300 (after fees if I go through eBay), but likely to use Gumtree.
Will track the ratings of this post as a gauge.

    • don't gauge things like that on ozbargain.. loll sites has the word Bargain in it for a reason! .. just put it on gumtree for whatever other people have posted theirs up for.. hehe that's a better gauge than bargain hunters here! :P

      • I know what you mean. We're a lot more savvy/thrifty here :)
Filtering the eBay "previously sold" list might be a better gauge.

      • +1

        indeed
as an example I bought a Kenwood Kmix from COTD purely to get one of the four attachments that my wife didn't have (as ours was imported from Italy a couple of years ago and that attachment didn't exist).
Removed the attachment from the box and sold it new (without that attachment) for a profit even after ebay fees. Was an auction so my starting price was less than what I paid and the 'buyers' decided what it was worth (despite they could have googled the exact model and some of the quoted text, found the current COTD listing and paid less for a completely new one)

Hmmm dont know about a tablet from 4 years ago… might be decent for the kids but rather just a $100 droid tab in that case.

    • Great kids tablet for sure. Heaps of quality games still.

I bought 1 of these with 3g from the recent Target clearance stock and it is running fine on iOS 7. Make sure you don't update to the latest iOS, it is very slow as I have one at work running on iOS 9. It's is hell slow.

    • so when you turn it ON the first time, it does not start updating the latest software by itself ?

      • +2

No. But it has a reminder of newer version of software is available. Same as my Son's ipad mini. It's still on the original version of iOS it was shipped with. DON'T UPDATE.

        • Thank you for that. So it was on iOS 7, when you first turn it ON ?

        • Yes and it still is.

Waiting for a deal on iPhone 3G

    • Can sort you out with an iPhone 3G, iPhone 4S, or two 1st gen iPads if you like? :-)

    • 1day did actually have some refurbed iphone 3g's for sale last year lol

  • Oh no! selling antique?
I sold mine at $180 earlier this year already.. and this model is not using 64-bit CPU which the app developer may stop the support very soon.

An iPad 2 is good value if you want to make the person using it hate Apple.

    • I hate Apple and I've never had the displeasure of owning an iPad .. :-) .. !! Down, Fanboys .. !!

  • Still runs okay but not as fast as it did on iOS 7. 7 was best and fastest for iPad 2. To get it faster on 9 you had to of jail broken it and removed a whole heap of processes using icleaner. Made it a whole lot quicker and very usable. Those on 9 should wait for the optimisations with later updates. It would make it quicker and much less laggy

    • Interesting to hear about the optimisations planned. Any further info on that? I couldn't find much about it… though I see lots of people having issues with it.

My iPad 2 seems to run well on iOS 9.1. Maybe it's just because I don't use it all the time.

  • The screen resolution on this is not good enough nowadays. Even on a 7 inch tablet this screen resolution is horrid. On a 4.5 inch phone is barely usable. :P Sorry you have to mention the poor screen resolution on these deal on Ozbargain.

wow, sad to hear human eyesight has devolved so drastically in just 4-5 years

      • -2

If eyesight was getting worse it would be good, a crappy screen like the iPad 2 has would be bearable. Humans standards have improved with screen tech and now anything with less than 300 ppi is noticeably a pixelated pos.

  • Wow. I am sure there are arguments why this is a bargain. Even if normal humans can't understand them.

These are completely unusable with the latest OS

  • +1 the sentiment above. I have a 16GB Wifi & 3G iPad 2 and it is s-l-o-w.

Suspect the 16GB storage space is the main culprit. These days that's not a lot of space.

Them internets have so much 'advanced' media-rich content now in websites that it can be unbearable to surf the web these days.
Especially if the little ones have lots of photos or Garage Band recordings.

My personal workaround is to keep the apps to a minumum and delete anything that hasn't been used in a while or has already been backed up.(photos videos etc).

  • I'm after an iPad 3 or later, wanting it mainly for running The Age newspaper app.

Anyone got any idea where these may be sold at a good price? (Tried the recent Target sell out but no stock anywhere near me - outer SE suburbs Melb)

(Age app Runs well on daughter's 3, seemed a bit sluggish on a 2 that I'd tried recently - unsure of OS being run which could have been a factor reading the comments here)

    • get an ipad air 16gb from the apple store in the refurb section $439 delivered…they are basically new (screens/cases, etc)
Then take it overseas withing 60 days and get 10% back.
      New ipad for $395.10….hooray!

      • Not heading OS anytime soon, but looking into the Apple refurb option - thanks adamp.

Can't believe I'm close to buying an Apple product…the Age app / reading Today's Paper on the Ipad is killer tho' for a news junkie.

  • My wife has an Ipad2 running iOS 9 - I wouldn't pay $10 ! Almost unusable it is that slow. Apple really screwed owners with older iPads.

  • i have 2 X 32gb ipad2 running IOS 5 - still operating as new. only used for browsing and little kids games these days, but doing that job well.
school needs means new versions to be bought soon. about to bite the bullet.

If you don't hate Android - which you shouldn't - then give Nexus 9 a shot. Telstra is currently selling them for $299. They will hold much longer in terms of service life comparing to this pile of old s**t.

    • Plus telstra gives you warranty and after sales service. Where this company is dodgy and will avoid helping you if you have any issues with the product. You are right spend the extra $60 for the vastly superior new product from a decent retailer than a second hand out of date pos from a dodgy retailer.
