Considering the current model is selling at Officeworks/Harveys for $43 AUD I think this is a pretty great deal.

Dont need one but good deal.

  • sweet picked up 2 of these and 2 chromecast audios that also sell 2 for $50.

    • yeh picked up the 2 audios as well this morning, even before seeing this post. Why are we denied these in Aus for the time being?

  • +3
    • Shipping seems a bit high?

      • $12 is high?

    • +1

Thanks willoz! I just got a couple of 'Audios' to play around with. They look good BUT they don't seem to be 'all there' at this stage but hopefully will be with a near future update: http://www.digitaltrends.com/media-streamer-reviews/google-c…

      • Oooh, my 'Audios' just arrived. Can output L/R Analog but also Optical Digital via the 3.5mm socket: http://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/C… I had no idea! Nice move Google :)

        • Anyone else get their 'Chromecast Audio' setup OK? My Chromecast 2s were setup in seconds and work perfectly but the Chromecast Audios can't even set themselves up :( Maybe they're geo-blocked!?!

        • +1

@SteveAndBelle: UPDATE: Not sure why but no matter what I did I couldn't setup the Chromecast Audios via my Samsung Galaxy S4. My mate got his setup in seconds on his Mobile so I tried my cheapie Acer Android Tablet and it worked perfectly. So yeah, if you can't get them setup on your device try doing it on something else.

  • +1

Might want to make a note that the power adapter that comes with this is the US adapter, might be an additional cost for those who don't have any spare adapters/USB wall plugs around

    • +4

Don't people use TV's USB to power their Chromecast? However it appears that the 2nd gen needs 5V/1A which might not be supplied by TV.

      • +2

… if your TV has a USB port :) One of mine is an early model and has HDMI but no USB hence the need to run with the supplied Adaptor.

        • Omg this is the best protip I have read in a long while. Can't believe I haven't been doing this.

        • @watwatwat: Just saving the world… one obvious comment at a time :P

        • +3

@watwatwat: The only problem in doing that is that you can not select that TV to start to stream unless tht tv is already on, therefore providing energy to its USB port.

Not a big deal if you are using chromecast in just one TV but when you have more than one, for example in the kids room also, you can set the program to be running there before turning the TV on and consequent crying while you set up the program…

        • +4

          @Richard Axe:

Oh god it kills the power to it. goes back and plugs back in to the wall. Not worth the inconvenience for me because I like to resume things regularly.

        • -1

@watwatwat: what have you been doing? Parking your pc next to your TV and using that usb? The adapter comes in the box with the chromecast

My colleague has just told me that a lot of the casting apps aren't working in Australia with the US 2nd Gen Chromecast, Has anyone else come across this?

      • +2

One of our customers had purchased them to use and they could only get netflix to cast. Supposedly the chromecast loads some apps from the internet so it may have some sort of geo-blocking issues.

    • Interesting. We're keen to grab a second casting device for the house, something purely for Hulu/Netflix/iView (and other local streaming apps). Currently use an ATV 3. Was going to grab one of the $43 chromecasts, and see what they're like, see if we could live with their innate cast-dependency rather than built-in apps.

      Hmmmm.

    • +3

Ive got a Chromecast2 and I've had issues. Very hard to blame it directly on the chromecast.

Stan, casting from iPhone and laptop. Video freezes while audio continues fine. Similar issues with iview.

However I've also run into problems streaming chrome tabs from the laptop. Which definately isn't related to the Australian specific apps like Stan and iview.

Have tried factory resetting, tweaking the wifi, changing the powersupply to the chromecast etc

    • +1

I actually heard this about gen1 US Chromecast being used in Europe. It won't work. Saying that I've Gen1 US one here in Oz works great

  • Would this device mirror my Tab S or android phones screens without need to connect to local WiFi? (would be handy for kids on holiday motels) Thanks

    • If you have another device, what I've ended up doing was using WiFi hotspot (with another device) to form a WiFi network. I think it demands internet connection at beginning (I am not too sure, it was my first time using it, so it might've been that Chromcast required WiFi for updates first).

      1st gen btw.

  • +1

If only they let you change DNS settings, only reason I got one was for US Netflix, returned it soon after

    • +3

You can get around this by setting up a static route in your router. I've done this and it works. PITB though.

      • I returned mine for the same reason. Pardon my ignorance, but can you have a static dns/vpn on your router, but also, like, nothing on your router? I use hola unblocker atm which I like because I can easily switch between US/AU netflix. Also would setting up your router in this way slow down your connection?

        • +5

          DO NOT USE HOLA!!!!

Hola make their money by selling your connection for use as a VPN endpoint for people willing to pay. The same mechanism that allows you to use someone else's connection to avoid geoblocking allows a paying customer to use your connection to do whatever they want (send out spam, route questionable content, etc).

You can get geoblockers for a couple of dollars per month, for a couple more you can get a VPN connection. It's worth it.

        • -2

@macrocephalic: Considering that I'm not paying anything for it I am not surprised that my connection is being used by other users. I've tried out a couple of VPNs but they've all been deathly slow. I don't have any opposition to paying, I just haven't found anything as good as Hola.

        • +2

          @ilikeradiohead: Zenmate

        • @ilikeradiohead: Getflix, around $24/35 a year based on what deal, super quick and they offer a proper VPN as well, but I've not tried it.

HOLA was used for a DDOS attack recently, which is bad.

      • Except some routers don't support that.

  • +1

I bought a single one for full price earlier this week from them! 100% my fault but still salty.

    • +1

I just bought 2 last night full price on ebay. I'm mad real mad michael jackson

  • +7

    FYI,

The only difference under the hood (i.e. aside from the updated look) is the updated WiFi support.

If your WiFi's 802.11 N signal in your home is weak for whatever reason and you have a newer router supports 802.11 AC then this might be worth it.

For everyone else, the old Chromecast is just as good

    • +3

5ghz support instead of 2.4 would be huge if you have congested Wi-Fi in your area

    • +1

Bummer, I thought the second version would allow us to get past the login splashscreens at hotels

    • +1

I had absolutely no idea this was the case, thanks for the info.

My Gen 1 Chromecast is working fine so I'll just save my money this time.

      • Yeah I was hoping they upgraded the CPU a little because I find the chromecast struggles with high bitrate movies from PLEX (My plex server is running a CPU which gets a >2600 passmark score)

Unfortunately this new version wouldn't change that

    • This is not true, the new chromecast does have a quicker CPU which most user reviews suggests speeds up the app loading/app switching times considerably. http://liliputing.com/2015/10/chromecast-2-has-a-cpu-thats-2…

  • Great deal. Gonna get it for sure, was waiting for a good deal on the 2nd gen.

  • Great deal, Bought one for self.. :) Thanks

  • -1

holy shit the price is twice as much. i thought it'd be in line with the last generation.

    • +2

This price is for 2 of them, same price as buying a first gen from jb or harvey

      • Thanks, didn't notice - makes sense.

  • +1

THanks for this OP. WOn't jump on it yet as I see some people are experiencing issues. Lucky enough to have 100/40 speed in the new area I live and the $200 AC router is going to waste on the 1st gen Chromey which can only pick up the 2.4ghz. Ah well it's still fast enough to stream Youtube and Netflix sufficiently (when not using UHD on Netflix). Will wait until little ol' Australia at the bottom of the world gets some scraps.

    • Same here mate, can't wait to get the bad boy down under

  • How much better is this than original Chromecast?

    Worthy upgrade?

  • Nice find. Just ordered it.

  • Looks like my family is getting a chrome cast each for Christmas :-D
For reference, shipping was $20~ not too bad.

  • I want them but it appears not workable in Australia judging from the posts above as yet….

Anyone else having problem with them?

  • +1

Bundle also works when ordering one Chromecast and one Chromecast Audio. Cart updates automatically to 50 USD (35 and 15).

  • +1

This is a kit. In box is 2 chromecast, only 1 micro usb charging cable and one US adapter? Won't use US adapter anyway. Would buy if 2 separate chromecast boxes each with its own micro usb charging cable.

    • +2

I'm not sure that's the case. It's definitely not clear but I think the specifications are just a copy and paste. Would be silly if it only had one of each when the premise is to enable you to use the chromecast on 2 TV's.

    • Nope. You get two complete full units from B&H. I received mine today.

  • Good deal. But I'm leaning to the Amazon Fire Stick in the other deal.

  • +1

If I have a TV that has a HDMI and USB, would I be wanting to get this Chromecast deal or the Amazon Fire TV stick (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/221906) for US$42+ for one Fire stick delivered?

I have 3 TVs in the house but will probably be using 1 or 2 (TV room and bedroom) mainly.

If the Fire stick was the better product, should I get two Fire sticks, or one Fire stick and one Chromecast (I think I could get a Chromecast 1 from my local Harvey Norman for A$43 anyway)?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

    • -2

The chromecast is way more flexible in what you can do with it…

      • Thanks for the quick answer. How might I find out the details of what you are referring to? What flexibility does Chromecast have that the Fire Stick doesn't? After all isn't this about displaying you phone screen on the TV? What more does/ should these devices do?

      • +2

What the hell are you talking about… The Chromecast is great however it has nowhere near the features the Fire Stick.

The Firestick is pretty much Android TV while the chromecast is just an interface.

  • Bought one kit. Now to use the other for kris kringle!

  • What's the different between the 1st gen if anyone wouldn't mind to explain briefly?

    • +1

      new one has wifi 802.11ac

  • jumped the gun and split with a friend :) cheers!

  • Consider upgrading to the Nexus player if you're looking for a more feature rich upgrade*. It's Android TV plus a Chromecast. It's about $40 more however but I personally find it well worth the price difference.

    • The only difference between the new and old Chromecast is the new one has AC support.
  • Ordered a kit.
    Thanks OP.

  • +1

    Thought that is a wok or fry pan….. Until I read it's a chromecast..lol.

  • Thanks OP. Checkout is currently closed due to the sabbath or something :( Hopefully they still have stock when it opens again.

  • You haven't got much time left but the eBay 20% Tech Discount (expiring midnight tonight) allows you to buy from Bing Lee - pick up at store for AU$48 less 20% = AU$38.40 (and you can pick it up tomorrow) or the Good Guys for A$37.60 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GOOGLE-H2G2-42-Google-Chromecast-…)

    • +1

appears to be first gen chromecast from Good Guys

      • oops thanks, my bad

  • Only wanted 1 as already have 1st Gen, looks like 1st Gen's gotta go

  • Wonderful OP. Booked the pair, after a week of picking up the deal for the CC1 from the groupon Sale. Now wondering if I should upgrade my router as well to make full use of AC !!

I took the DHL Global mail option (USD $14) overall the paypal cost me was A$92.20.

  • just got an email from B&H telling me that they've over sold and no longer have stock available.

  • +1

    Anyone received it yet?

    I picked DHL saver:
    on DHL
    En Route
    Processing Completed at Origin
Wed, December 2, 2015 at 3:49 PM ET
    Secaucus, NJ, US

    and on USPS
December 2, 2015 Pre-Shipment Info Sent to USPS

    No updates since then.

    • +1

Try a tracking service like www.trackitonline.ru. I think the cheaper DHL tiers don't have end to end tracking.
They probably pass it on to another company to get it to Australia, and then Aust post for final delivery.
The linked service will attempt to track it through all carriers.

    • +1

same here, no updates since dec 2.

    • Same here. Nothing so far. Was meant to use it as Kris Kringle but looks like I have to make a voucher for the recipient now!

    • Ordered mine on 27/11.
http://www.trackitonline.ru & http://webtrack.dhlglobalmail.com indicate it was handed off from DHL to US Postal service on 2/12 and is now in 'Transport to Destination Country' as of 4/12. Still no sign of the package.

      • Australia Strike Actions
Greetings! Please be aware strike actions of Customs officials will cause delays in Australia. The strike is expected to last from December 7, 2015 to December 14, 2015. Significant backlogs are expected which may cause delivery delays of one to two weeks. DHL eCommerce will provide updates as they become available.

        from DHL website

  • +1

Seems like it's back in stock but now 2 for USD$55.

DHL Saver adds $12.26 bringing the total to USD$67.26

  • Still haven't received them. It says there is a customs strike and it might hold DHL items up to a week. So really have no idea when it will arrive.

    • +1

Mine just showed up, on a Sunday! I am not one to question why. It is pretty awesome, I bought the Android Plex app and am casting my content. With the second one I will attempt to wean my parents off Foxtel.

      • Where you at? SYD?

        • Melbourne. Been using it already for a week and it is pretty cool. Any issues I have had are the fault of crappy routers like the Optusnet one.

  • Received mine today. Two complete units.

    • +1

      I'm still waiting…………….

      • Me too - it's been over 3 weeks. I have received heaps of stuff by other carriers that was ordered after so I wonder why the strike has affected DHL more than others…

        • Me three. Bit ridiculous. I've ordered mine on 26/11 and no update since it left Brooklyn on 4/12. I've ordered multiple of other items in December through Amazon and all have arrived before these Chromecasts. Called DHL last week but they had no update to give other than it should arrive this week. I'm hoping it does arrive otherwise will have to think of another Kris Kringle present.

        • @julz15:

Ok mine has arrived. I guess the customs strike is over.

        • @Vieira4:

That's awesome news for you. Was there any updates in the tracking link?

        • @julz15:
Only after it was delivered. Previous entry was Dec 4, saying it was handed to USPS.

        • Still waiting in Adelaide… last report was 3rd December. to the people who have received it, was it delivered by DHL or by auspost?

        • @dorz:

I believe it's Australia Post. That's what DHL and BHPhoto keep telling me. I doubt it will arrive by Christmas now…

        • Just got off the phone with auspost, apparently my item has been scanned into sydney this morning after passing through customs. i had to call and check with the USPS number. at least i know it is in the country, but i was advised operations slow down between 24th and the 4th… indicating mine would probably be delivered on the 4th Jan =/

        • @dorz:

Sadness. I guess WA will get it even later then!
