Apparently head office is clamping down on price lists being shared publicly. Lots of new price drops after the initial lot last week.

Thanks for sharing TA, if you come across any other lovely lists like your screenshot please share :)

    • +2

today I was in DSE at Camberwell and overheard a customer and DSE employee discussing price lists being shared publicly. interesting conversation.

      • What did they say?

        • +7

          the jist of it-
Customer "where are the deals for this clearance? such poor range of stock."
DSE "people have been buying up big"
Customer "what do you mean big?"
DSE guy "people have been getting price lists and coming knowing exactly what they want and how much it is"
Customer "where do they get this price lists?"
          DSE guy "I don't know"
Customer "that's not fair for the rest of us"
          DSE guy "sorry"
Customer "you should give me a discount on another product"
          DSE guy "can't do that"
Customer "this is ridiculous, what about a discount on that product?"
          DSE guy "can't do that"
Customer "what is DSE doing about this?"
DSE guy "not much we can do, those are the prices."

Customer seemed irate. DSE guy was extremely patient and polite.

I might have heard the word "professional" in the conversation but that may have been wishful thinking

          @altomic:

          Customer seems like a dick.
Without the product list on me I managed to find some goodies. You just find what you want and check the price. No big deal. Yes price list can help but at the end of the day what he wanted probably wasn't on special.

        • +1

@altomic: Customer seems remarkably calm given that they've never walked into a DSE and found a special they saw advertised and now it's happening again lel.

DS has always tried to maintain the secrecy of its in-house stock price lists. It's a confidential business document. Nothing new.

In the past, I cultivated good relationships with store managers to see stores 'quit stock' lists. Some would ring me when a list arrived, or they wanted to clear equipment that was almost unable to be sold (due to loss of components or damage). Now there's Ozbargain ;-)

      • +10

DS has always tried to maintain the secrecy of its in-house stock price lists. It's a confidential business document. Nothing new.

So the Dick is having a "mammoth" clearance sale (interestingly, an extinct species from the ice age after the dinosaurs: http://www.adnews.com.au/adnews/kogan-blasts-gerry-harvey-as…), but customers actually have to ask hoarding tight-lipped staff what the price is because it's a secret…

That is such a weird mentality - does the Dick actually want to sell anything? I don't see how it would be confidential if people can price match anyway, and the fact that their prices are currently "unmatchable" (to the point where Gerry Harvey is whinging about competitive suicidal pricing: http://www.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/dick-smith-ki…).

        • -5

I resent your comment, it's neither helpful or relevant.

        • +1

DSE is about trying to take as much money as possible off ignorant people - surely the ignorant are even better for DSE if they have no low prices as a reference point when they carry out their tranasaction.

        • Its an unusual strategy, but it worked for Dick in that it moved a lot of stock that would not have easily moved. It gained them a lot of free publicity.

Stores are now receiving 'mammoth' amounts of new stock. A manager of a minor DS said to me yesterday he'd never seen so much stock arrive in 1 day - 130 cartons. Stores needed the space to sell the new stock that was sitting in warehouses - that's a huge investment tied up costing money to store.

For the customers & staff it was often a frustrating experience. But lots of us got something.

Quit Stock varies with stores & is old slow moving product that no one really wants. It does not appear in sales catalogs.

Its only the store Quit Stock list which is confidential (people could be taken to court for providing or reproducing it) - the price is not secret once the sale starts. Price tags were printed for a lot of stock, but seems there wasn't time to put up before we hit the stores. If there were few in stock, printing & attaching tags probably is not worth it. There was so much quit stock, new temporary staff, lack of communication,…

In the past, DS usually did not display Quit Stock price but price was reduced at counter. Quit Stock was marked with a yellow sticker on price tag. Was a common practice in many retailers. Staff then could offer a cheaper price. So same old, same old.

  • Reckon any s5 stock anywhere?

  • Was just in a Dick Smith 20 mins ago to pick up my weather monitor and was looking at the phones/sims and there was NOTHING on sale at all arrr

    • Ask for a price check, I picked up at $200 D-link wi-fi camera for $40.

There was other stuff too I'd imagine, you just have to check.

      • Can you provide the model please? I'm looking for one myself.

  • Huawei Mate 7 for $149 is great price for a last gen flagship if found.

    • Is that 2GB ram or 3GB ram??

      • It's on that list, did not see one personally. Most likely the silver 2gb ram version based on previous DSE deals. Even then it's a steal at $149.

    • Is it gold amber version with 3gb ram or is it the white version with 2gb ram.

    • Just found a mate 7 in warringah mall, but it's scanning at $450, and there's nothing the sales rep can do about it. He said it was probably cheaper last week but they've changed the prices since its been ozbargained…

      • Why would they increase price for a clearance item…

      • Was still showing as $149 on the dse price list yesterday when I went looking… Vodafone version, NOT the unlocked one.
Was only a few left in NSW and were country areas… 1 at albury from memory.

  • Includes 3GB of data, I believe.

;-) It will be good to have this after Amaysim's $5 month with 5GB expires.

    • We are thinking the same thing.

This is clearly an uneducated, but legit question. Why are starter kits so popular? Surely everybody already has a SIM already? Isn't the hassle of changing mobile numbers too big to be worth getting a new SIM? I must be missing something here - can somebody educate me on this?

    • +6

some people's profession needed them to change n dispose sim card frequently.

      • +1

        Heh. "Profession".

    • +1

I think you can keep the number, but have to call up the customer service to do so.

    • +1

you authorise to port your mobile number across to the new carrier

      • +1

Seems like a lot of messing around. Is there anyone here who regularly takes advantage of these startup kits? I'd be interested to hear why.

        • +8

I have a dual sim phone i keep one number for incoming calls and the other i switch sims every 15 days i buy heaps of $30 optus starter kits at $5 each and use the my prepaid daily plus $2 daily so for $10 a month i get unlimited calls and 500 meg a day.

        • not for calls, you get so many calls now you can be doing better things with your time than swapping sims to try and save money …..

I sometimes get the 5GB data sits for $2 and give them to my 8 year old so that has data when on school holidays using his wifi modem ….. tell him to use use and throw when empty.

The last plan I'm on is $40, unlimited calls and 10GB data, with a data sharing sim, even my sons needs seem to be covered now.

I guess some people drive 100km to buy a $2 item on Gumtree to try and save money …..

        • +3

@paulaus: I do similar but i dont use much data so change every 30 days with whatever is cheapest (Free Optus Sims From Coles Express at the moment). My main sim is a very old Telstra sim on a very old plan that allows me to transfer $10 credit to it from a Telstra $30 sim each day (at a cost of 25c per transaction). So 1 month using Telstra as my second sim gives me 48 weeks on my main sim.Present expiry on main sim is 2018.Just checked my stock of sim cards 14 with 2 more on the way none of which i have paid more than $5 for.

        • It isn't - tick a few more boxes when you activate.

You can also send the credit to your existing service with new starter packs.

        • @paulaus: I also use for calling gf in Philippines $5 for $30 starter pack gives me 136 minutes to call her mobile phone.

        • @paulaus: What phone do you have thats dual sim compatible?

        • +1

@twig: Many phones have dual sim i have 2 an asus zenfone 5 and a mlais mx base a china phone. But Motorola have dual sim phones and many others.

        • @paulaus: With a $30 starter kit (Telstra), can you transfer the $30 to another SIM?

        • @prhino: Yes. To another telstra sim via CreditMe2U.

        • @tianyujojo: And that credit can be used to recharge? Eg. A $30 starter pack could be used to pay for a $20 recharge the next month?

    • +2

I don't know if I get you clearly. But we don't need to change numbers.

    • +5

Starter Packs are often much cheaper than recharges. So people activate these instead.

Vodafone are good to stockpile as there is no expiry date. (There are cheap deals on SIM that are about to expire - avoid unless you can use them fast.)

For mobile data, the phone number isn't important.
For calls, you can port your existing number between telcos.

Of course, if you want to roll over existing credit, a Starter Pack is of no use, so use a recharge.

It's been years since I've used a recharge. A long time back I wrote about the use of Starter Packs in the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki.

    • This is from a Voda fone whose long life ($40) option, entitles you to something like 20 mins/ 20mb as I 've now reviewed. I expect very little makes sense.
      (What's this, 1mb per month?)

Likely some will just throw the combo inclusion (3GB) on a USB stick for a few days/(28).

Most may not bother if TA's list is exhaustive. Stock availability appears about as keen and as widespread as Telstra's effort: gonna be slim pickings anyway

    • +5

      get a dual sim phone.

have your "regular number" in slot 1 - to receive calls.
have the "starter kit sim" in slot 2 - to make calls - add #31# to the front of your calls to block your number (the receiver gets confused when you call them on a different number)

      • not many dual sim phones that have 4G including 700mhz.

    • +1

You can always port back and forth with your own number. PS be original geez :p

    • If this is the case how did I end up with 0 extra telsra $30 when they are priced to $10 in the last few sales.

      Harvey Norman Missed out
      7-11 missed out
      Woolies missed out.

Office works… Gonna try there ><. I'm down to 8 Telstra $30 starters so I need to buy more.

    • +1

I assume people with dual sims could get a lot of value from this without having to remove their old card.

    • Besides the monetary aspects, some use disposable sim cards to bypass SMS verfications for legitimate or nefarious purposes.

A common quasi-innocent example is the desire to trial a service without using up a legitimate phone number (or exposing a personal number to phone spam).

    • dude I got no access to NBN,ADSL,dial up etc beacause I live in the innovation nation. The government basically won't fix the infrastructure, they walked away from the NBN. FFS my fixed line phone just about works as the copper is so old.

My only choice is to be a sim-monkey, I swing from sim to sim feeding off the data as I go.It's a pain but I wouldn't have internet access otherwise.

So at the mo I have gobbling down "cashrewards Telstra" and then port over to a Vodaphone……..ad infinitum……….or until a new deal comes up. As a back up I have Optus which is like 1995 dial up speed. But it's better than sending letters!

I have a modem with two external aerials.

I'm liking the Telstra as I get free music via Google Play. For $5 a sim I can get 7.5Gb data plus $30 of music.

      • Sending letters is going to cost $1 and take up to six days soon.
Should form a Sim monkey club for those that rely on 3G.

      • hehehe, Im a sim-monkey apparently…hahaha, like it.

  • How does one use this to acquire a mate 7, dick smith website doesn't list them.Is it s matter of ringing stores?

  • +1

Is the Huawei mate 7 unlocked? from previous post, it seems like it is unlocked even if VF branded.

    • +1

I think this one is the vf version, 16gb + 2gb ram. Anyway you can unlock for free with vf.

    • Hi, can anyone confirm it's unlocked straight out of the box? I've purchased one and don't want to open it. IMEI that's on the box comes up with unlock error on the VF website. It says on the box there's a fee to unlock too?

      • Apologies, was an input mistake. Can confirm it is NOT LOCKED to vodafone network.

        • Thanks for the info - Bought one of these for the wife for Christmas but only saw your comment. Now that you have opened yours, how are you finding it? Is it dual SIM by any chance? I haven't opened the box yet in case it gets wife veto….

  • +1

If I pop in tomorrow morning, will the staff have hoarded these in the back and respond with blank stares if I ask for them?

    • Stock levels are almost never accurate. Stock is transferred between stores & the system may not be updated. Stock is lost, stolen, damaged, returned unsalable, & sometimes used in the store, etc. So stock may not exist even though it shows on their system. For example, stores showing 1 Starter Pack above probably have none.

      • So there's a reasonable chance they'd have them if the list says ~30?

        • Depending on the age of the stock, yes. The longer its been sitting around, the less likely the accuracy of the stock report.

I was in a Kmart a week back - someone had pinched the SIM from a $2 Optus pack on sale for 5c. In retail, it's hard to accurately keep track of stock.

  • For my help tomorrow, does anyone know if the starter kits are the new design (as in the related products column) or old sqaure small packaging?

  • +1

TA is it possible to get stock levels of the Mate7 ?

    • +1

      +1 SA starter kits?

Anyone please help me with a receipt for the $149 Mate 7. I bought not long ago for $449, i think i will be able do a price protection on it.

    • +2

I think the Mate 7 you bought is the 3GB RAM version (Outright - Non VF branded) from the Dicksmith website (Gold Colour with Dual Sim Capability).

The $149 one should be the silver/grey colour version (Vodafone branded) with 2GB RAM (Dicksmith stopped selling this version way back earlier this year).

I would assume these two cannot be price matched.

      • +1

No, my one is the 2GB vodafone version.

  • -3

How much is the galaxy note 4?

  • Curious to know whether anyone has seen a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge for sale in any of the DSE franchises.

I think DSE Miranda (NSW) had a couple of units in black but either no-one ever picks up the phone in that store or it's left off the hook.

Regardless, is $500 a good price for the Note 4?

    • Oh yeah, also wanted to know the price of the Note Edge at DSE should anyone actually have it on sale.

    • Did you try Karingal and Hastings?

      • At least their system told me. At glen waverley.

        • OK I was told 2 at Karingal and 1 at Hastings, but I can't get to either of those places.

        • @unity1: Victoria is now sold out because I got the last ones at those stores. While I'm at Hasting, I notice that they have unlock Nokia Lumia 520 Yellow colour EM5199 for $53.70. Many toner cartridge for Brother printer for $10 and Canon Toner for LBP3000 for $5. BTW, staff at Hasting store being a d*ck, I just don't understand why some store staff trying to make it a big hassles for you to buy clearance stuffs.

  • +2

Apparently 0 $40 voda in store at Blacktown bought out.. Maybe by staff????

  • How much is the non-vf branded s5 going for at the moment? Is in-store different to the online price?

  • Just got back from local DSE.

There was 1 X Mate7 left so I grabbed that.

There was probably 15-12 Vida $40 sim cards in the drawer. He only let me take 5.

    Cheers TA.

    • can u please send me your receipt for the mate 7? i will be extremely grateful for your help!

      • No worries, do you just need the part that lists the phone and price and store?

        • Yes with the date as well, please.

        • @rdcool:
