Free $30 Telstra SIM w/ 7GB Data George St Sydney

830

In the middle of the closed off section of George St, outside Dymocks, next to a Christmas tree on the road. NOT the Telstra store nearby. A guy comes out every few mins with a few $30 SIM card packs.

Apparently you need to activate it on the spot - probably to prevent reselling.

Just got one & they are pretty laid back about giving them out, no need to register on the spot, expiry 2017-11-02.

No idea how many they have or how long they'll be there.

    Free popcorn as well?

That competition is something separate. I think it was for 6 months of something, including home broadband - didn't really pay attention to it.

        • +8

So if i give something to you for free, but i don't give the next person something for free…. Did you get something for free or not?

        • +3

Well, if you want to go in and ask there's a good chance they'll give you one. I just happened to walk past a couple times. Looks like there wasn't much interest from passersby, so maybe he just didn't bother hanging around outside?

(No, I didn't take them up on it - was in a bit too much of a hurry to activate now. Had it in my hand and all :( )

        • @elusive:
          Was it santa ?,mister.

  • What are the terms? Free for life? First month free?
    More details please OP.

    • +3

Looked like your standard $30 prepaid starter SIM (that goes for $10 or even $5 on special at times). So should be 30 days. The data, etc., are a standard Telstra offer.

    • +8

After the first month they will take your soul.

      • +7

        Nope,that's amaysim.

    Merry Telstry Chrismas!

    • that was terrible lol

New spin on the old speaker in a van deal? :)

  • +1

Or probably the SIM card activation expiry is at the end of the day which is why it needs to be activated right away. Explains why it's being given out for free any way if it's almost past the activate by expiry date.

  • +4

This just reminds me of The Simpsons, of Homer going in and out of the bushes repeatedly.

  • Free is free. Good work. Is he dressed as Santa?

  • +1

I confess I don't understand the economics at play here. I thought data prices where going up? Is that why all the telephone providers reduced the data allowance on plans 12 months back? Now it seems they're giving it away. What is going on?

    • They now have more bandwidth and with more users on LTE the spectrum is used more efficiently. Competition has also ramped up.

Got one, just the right time, thanks

  • +1

just got one… and two boxes of popcorn.

  • Free?!? Crazy.

  • Thanks. Just got one as well. Combine it with the Telstra Air offer! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/225435
and yes, there is a free popcorn stand next to the booth. Great while you're waiting!

great way to steal all someones petsonal data.
give them a sim pack you bought for $5 then force them to use your tablet and type in all their petsonal details using the optus/ telstra website and copy/ screencap it.

people trust any random handing out free ies.

I think your tin foil hat is on a little tight..

You'd say that if you were his accomplice…

    • +4

It's not all that different from signing up to a post-paid plan in-store. Basically comes down to whether you trust that these really are Telstra employees.

Now, it's possible that some randoms set up a booth disguised as Telstra, but unlikely. If you're really concerned you can call Telstra or maybe even pop into the store a bit down the road and ask (assuming they have some idea of what's going on).

      • +1

Telstra reps are often oblivious to their own well publicised deals.

I suspect if you actually asked, it would take a few calls to find the number to call. Then it would be wrong. Then they would have to check with their supervisors supervisors. Then they wouldn't be allowed to give that info. Etc Etc Etc

In 90 days time you might get a random call back saying the offer was legit, but expired 89days ago.

        • hahahaha so true

    • Yes. It could be any one using his own tablet possibly with a key logger installed on it to capture every ones drivers license and medicare details enough for 100 points of ID to steal peoples identities to sell off to criminals. I mean who would be stupid enough to go up to a stranger on the street to hand over these sensitive 100 points of ID details to. Stupidity. It's a very real possibility.

And you people are handing over these sensitive details to a stranger on the streets.

Are you even getting any identification details from this person?. It could be any one.

      • The actual sign-up is inside the booth. Take from that what you will.

Also, last I checked prepaid activation doesn't require as many details as postpaid/a proper credit check.

        • -1

Prepaid activation still requires 100 points of ID.

        • +1

          @hollykryten: no it doesn't.

        • @mousie:

This begs to differ, you need to provide ID (Drivers license, Medicare etc) to activate a Telstra pre-paid service. It's a legal requirement:

To activate your Pre-Paid service you’ll need:

A valid form of ID, either:
Australian Driver Licence or Learner Permit
          Medicare card
          Australian passport
International passport with valid Australian visa

          https://www.my.telstra.com.au/activate?ti=TR:TR:june12:ppaap…

        • +1

@hollykryten: Yes. You need one of those.

One of those does not make 100 points of ID.

That's why I said "doesn't require as many details".

(Note: I'm just going by memory of when I activated some other services, which had similar requirements. Prepaid Vodafone, Boost, Aldi, etc., were happy with just drivers licence number. Vodafone postpaid required the 100 points of ID, so I had to pull out the Medicare… It's possible Telstra requires 100 points for prepaid, and I have no experience with them, but that would be different from every other provider and also doesn't match the page you linked.)

          Here you go: https://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2013L01844

Section 4.4, as long as you have under 5 prepaid services you only need one category A document. Schedule 2 Part 1, that means a single drivers licence or even a single student ID card is legally enough. That doesn't make up 100 points of ID, obviously.

      • +1

I mean who would be stupid enough to go up to a stranger on the street to hand over these sensitive 100 points of ID details to.

The same people who permit the door staff at licensed clubs to scan their licenses.

        • +1

I wouldn't believe that is even possible until i saw it first hand. How, in 2015, can folks be so "care-free"?

        • +1

          @Charity:

          1. They're idiots.
          2. They don't value their privacy.
          3. They're far too willing to submit to authority.
        • A Telstra shop is a stranger now?!
          WTH!?
Maybe its Bin Laden and his 40 thieves
          stealing your Identitiy….

        • @Scrooge McDuck: 4. They want to get in

  • Thanks OP, theres a Queue now and popcorn was very soggy :(
Had existing pre-paid account I just hooked onto. using this for our trip, hopefully good reception.

  • +3

Was in line when they told the people behind that they were all out yesterday, and they said they'd be back today at 9am. So AFAIK it should still be on today.

    • Can confirm they are still doing this today — Just picked mine up!

Just got one & they are pretty laid back about giving them out, no need to register on the spot, expiry 2017-11-02.

    • Thanks, updated the post.

  • Went there today (Wednesday 16 Dec) and got one easily. Very friendly. No need to register on the spot. Got free Skittles too

  • Thanks OP. I just went there this morning and the guy said they aren't giving out the SIM cards anymore. They are sill giving out popcorn though :-)
