@ms: there are no travel warnings from governments about Melbourne. I posted clearly about the travel warnings for FEMALES TRAVELLING TO INDIA.

it's a massive problem that people need to know before they think about travelling there.

        • +1

@Makoto: Mate… I grew up in a family of majority of females in India for 21 years and I have female friends from a few different parts of the country through my studies & work. And I have travelled with them

So when you say it happens all over India, all of the time, please make sure you are not talking to someone like me.

I am not denying that it doesnt happen. It certainly does.

Also, when you refer to Philippines, the govt issues travel warnings for a reason. It doesnt matter where it happens.

I believe you are on this motive to go on and on without any consideration of what people are sharing about their experiences first hand.

        • +2

          @ms:

So do you have some data on how many females get gang raped in melbourne and how many in India. Not many females in Australia are raped in 1 year as how many get raped in a month in Delhi (capital of India)
Yes people can die anywhere but you would know you have high chance of being killed/kidnapped in Syria then anywhere else in the world. Would you agree?

I am indian myself and that is why we know India better than anybody else. We hear more news reported and unreported about what happens in India. If God forbids something happens to you, Police will simply ask X amount of money. Being indian we are highlighting truth for your awareness. There is no happiness in telling the truth but that how it is there.

        • @amsaini15:

          LOL.

        • @amsaini15: haha.. I think you're referring to Makoto mate :)

I am really starting to see the funny side of this whole thread.

Nothing against you. I am simply having a laugh with people like Makoto

        • @amsaini15: agree

        • @ms: it's not funny. It is a reality

        • @Makoto:

          happens all over India

So rapes and murders don't happen in other countries?

Are you sure you don't want to retract that statement? Because common knowledge would infer that rapes and murders happen pretty much all over the world.

So, although the scaremongering might work with some ill-informed members here, doesn't win me over sorry.

        • @ms: hahaha… Mate.. IGNORE :)

        • @aspirepranesh:

Pointless scaremongering when illegal activities happen all over the world…

          Ignore.

        • @KaptnKaos:

          @OzSikhs:

And I bet when you're in India you'll advocate that Australians bash all Indians and instil the same useless fear into them, the same way you're attempting to discourage genuine visitors to India here.

          Guess what?

          It's not working.

        • @amsaini15: Its your personal opinion.
Huge country with billion plus population. depends again which region you travel. The deals are for Thiruchirapalli and its safer there.

  • +3

People, talk about this deal and stop fighting on to visit India or not. If you don't like to visit India, go somewhere else. If you like to visit then go and enjoy.

  • +6

Enough of bullshit I have read today from people trying to portray India as "Not safe at all". What country are you comparing it with?

India is safe, yeah not as safe as countries like Australia obviously. Just hire a reputed tour company or go in a group and you'll be alright. You'll be amazed at how much this country has to offer in terms of diversity and everything - it'll be a different experience for sure.

All these non resident Indians (NRIs) who are whinging about India being "not safe at all" have an option of completely disassociating them by renouncing Indian citizenship and not applying for the OCI.

    • -2

I agree with diversity and everything India has to offer. Excellent place to see and taste different type of food.
Also as you said, if you hire reputable Tour company, there would be no issues. But dont think about going around as a backpacker. It will again be different experience but nice one. If you know what I mean.

The only reason we non resident Indians (NRIs) still have OCI and still go to India is not because of India but because of our close relatives, near and dears ones still stuck there. If our parents can get easy migration in Australia (we will bear cost of health insurance), I will announce on Ozbargain for you that I have renounced my Indian citizenship. I promise.

      • +2

Mate.. please don't generalize everyone as WE :)

    • +2

What country are you comparing it with?

      Ummm, safer countries… Such as

      Iraq, Iran, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan…

      Point made.

    Kudos OP, Great Deal!

I feel bit baffled on how people have defined India as Unsafe Destination to travel. I don't like to be Keyboard Warrior, but few opinion above just tricked me a bit to write my opinion on this matter.

    Humble Request :

I always tell my friends who intend to visit India, don't visit India if you have only the perspective from the documentary you saw on Discovery channel or National Geography. They will always show you Poor, Dirty, Crime ridden India cause you wont be interested in watching Good infrastructure, World Business models, Advance technology etc, because this is what you see already around you, so lets sell you one sad poor village story from 638,000 villages that are in India(more than population of many cities in world).

    • +2

      @BigBrother:

Read creafully what you have posted. "reported" crime rates. Police in India will only file a case if you have money. 80% of India is poor. So you can imagine if those 80% report crimes than India will the leader in that group.

      • +3

        80% of India is poor.

If that's from Wikipedia I'm going to lose it.

      • +2

@amsaini15, I think your numbers are really Out of Date. People living below Poverty Line are 22.9%, Link. And this number seems similar to other sources as well. Though 22.9% is high, as you are out of date, I will let you know that India has shed this figure by half in recent times. There are issues everywhere, you need to get your context correct.

Also, I haven't missed anything on what I have written, I know it says reported crimes, but this things goes same everywhere, even in developed countries.

    • +8

. They will always show you Poor, Dirty, Crime ridden India

Exactly, Imagine a story about Australia that only talks about the problems in Aboriginal Communities, Lack of education health or any other development measure. Imagine if all we spoke about when we mentioned Australia is the Marginalisation and suffering of the Aboriginals.

You wouldn't like that but when it comes to India that's the only thing that matters. Just focus in the the crime and the poverty, that's all that there is to it ???

      • IGNORE 5000 years of civilization, ignore breathtaking temples monuments and history, Ignore the diversity in Land, Food and culture from state to state. Ignore the different weather patterns and everything from Deserts to Snow to mountains, to rainforests, ignore the diversity of wildlife, ignore the 42 UNESCO WORLD Heritage sites.*

Can't believe some people are so SELF LOATHING.. Sucks to be you I guess. Get a Backbone guys and stand up straight, India has ISSUES but bitching isn't doing anything about it.

  • +3

    @amsaini15

Read creafully what you have posted. "reported" crime rates.

You ask for stats and when someone provides them, you counter with the following:

Police in India will only file a case if you have money. 80% of India is poor. So you can imagine if those 80% report crimes than India will the leader in that group.

    Great logic.

  • +5

Yawn!!! Mods.. I have had enough for the day. Care to step in? As much I like this deal and some of the valid comments being made, the level of stupidity and ignorance exhibited here is simple too much to handle for my brain cells.

    • Teacher! Teacher!

These guys are all saying India is safe and it's upsetting me! :(

      • Your level of sarcasm really blows. :D

And yeah, I am upset. Upset for the OP. A great deal for travel has simply been blown away by all the ridiculous arguments and counter arguments.

  • There are so many negative comments on reddit or ozbargain about India whenever a thread comes up, i'm beginning to think there is some latent racism involved. Not everyone, just the subtle attitude of making sweeping generalisations about entire countries and the people in it. "what a shithole" is a common line.

    • +5

John, it's not racism when Indians are advocating people against visiting their own counties of origin.

The generalisations that you speak of, and the opinion strongly pushed here that 'India is an unsafe country' has all been initiated in this thread by Indian members themselves.

Surely it's not racism when Indians diss India??

      • +1

I am Indian :) and I love India. And I love australia. Believe it or not, among all the countries I have been to , I love Vietnam.

I certainly dont hate any specific country

        • been allover the world and Vietnam has been my absolute favourite, lovely people, felt safe everywhere compared to most other asian countries and great cheap food and drinks

  • +1

Price is great to get to India, however biggest downfall of the deal is the fact that for any domestic travel you'll have to take a connection from chennai bumps up the price of domestic travel. Still an amazing price and considering going early next year. Thanks!

  • Alright I think everyone has said their piece, lets leave it there and move on. Whilst I understand that these comments are about the destination in question, comments have turned into arguments so lets stop it now before it turns into personal attacks.

    Thanks

    • Thanks.

    • Finally. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  • TBH honest Australia isn't safe at all either.

The difference is that here we have a better policing and non-corrupt system which sometimes covers the problem at a surface level,
but that won't help you when you get glassed in the face or just stabbed for standing somewhere post 9pm.

The drunken idiots and drug-takers are the major cause of this. Light sentences and "slap on the hand" approaches have only fueled this behavior.

e.g (1): Person A gets shit-faced drunk, walks around and stirs up a fight with a guy and his GF minding their own business. Later punches and/or injurs the man. Result? light sentencing as he was non-coherent and is now "sorry"

e.g (2): exact same scenario above only the perpetrator is not drunk, much heavier sentencing.

So you see, alcohol is really a barrier from people here being rightly sentenced for rape and battery. I'ts rather stupid.

  • +7

If you are in " Wrong place at the Wrong time " you get fxxxked . no matter where in the Damn world .
Dont bias on a country /creed for that.

  • Interesting discussions on a travel deal.
visit http://smartraveller.gov.au/countries/india# to know about updates and warnings.

Moreover whichever country of origin you are, you are respected by your behavior, attitude, acceptance and tolerance.

  • +5

Seriously people…some comments here are disgusting and especially considering that it came from the natives of that particular country makes it even more shameful.

Honestly India is like any other country but culturally very diverse. Its a must visit country for the food, people (nicer ones) and the beauty. Agree there are places where you shouldn't be going to, but hey its there in all parts of the world.

So comment on the deal here and not about how your wife or sister got stared at when they were queuing up to buy some street food:)

  • This thread is great with popcorn

  • +2

India is one of the dirtiest smelliest places you can visit and is hard work while your there but when you get home you just want to go back.

While I was there my wife had her ass felt up about 50 times but we didn't really care. It is just part of the india experience.

    • And what city was this?

      • +1

The dirtiest ? Well for me Kolkata was. Shocking air pollution as well.

  • +1

All people, cultures and countries are exactly the same. Otherwise you are a far right racist and bigot. Throw in misogynist as well.

  • +1

similar countries esp countries surrounding India are exporting "various products" to blow thing up irrespective of their skin "color/colour".
People go to India to understand, why not India?…which is so diverse that travel 100 KM in any direction, you will encounter different culture and language, but still its world's largest and functioning democracy ….

    • Failing as a democracy, but let's not get into that.! I'm wondering how I'm going to get from Tiruchalappali to Chennai.

  • -1

Smelly Delhi Belly for $400 is a marvellous deal friends.

  • +1

I am going to ignore all the negative comments and keep my focus on deal.
