ridiculous tax charges for the award tickets.

    • +2

And you can't use points to avoid the taxes any longer. You can on Virgin. Qantas have ruined the frequent flyer program. After many years of being loyal to QF, no longer.

      • +10

That doesn't bother me since using points to pay for taxes is not at a good cents/point conversion rate (usually lower than what I'd consider as good value for the airfare component) anyway.

    • -1

Always has been, nothing has changed in years.

      • What relevance is "nothing has changed"? Isdnman raised a critical consideration that the "fees" alone are on par with a sale fare.

        • +1

i've only ever use them for business or first to get the best value… otherwise economy is just a waste and cash back cards are better…

        • @anthonyaaa: I'm in the same boat…but these points discounts are a bit of an exception.

If you're flying return, then paying $700/800 of taxes are probably a waste of 80,000 points to go to Europe (which you could conceivably do for $1100/1200 outside of peak season). If you're flying one way (e.g. to relocate/fly a different way home), the charges are very good. Still, you could get to Europe one way for less than $700 (with a dodgy airline mind you), which is about equivalent to $330 tax + 40k points.

    • I bought two tickets from NY to Melbourne for my son with the 50% off promotion about 6 weeks ago. Used 130,000 points but tax was Aus$2,350 for two tickets for April 2016.

      • +1

        Obscene.

      • +2

Lol. Isnt a normal return ticket about that price?

        • +1

On special and flying airnz, yes.

        • It was for April 2016, apparently fares were close to $3K each. I'm not upset as we got 50% off the points and I'm looking at it like it was a $1200 fare, which is fairly cheap, but Qantas is for sure not doing me any favours.

        • @abacus: Just FYI i booked BNE-LAX return for about $847 per person in August 16 (2 adults, 2 kids) which was only slightly more than the taxes i would have had to pay on top of the damn near 300,000 points. Stupid Qantas.

  • Some sweet deals on this one. I was too busy booking to post :)

An example. SYD<->PVG for spring festival 2016 is showing $1800 return (although it's flex fares). Or with this it's 43,000 points + $430

  • Doesn't seem to work for an international destination to Aus one way
Ie. I'm looking to book Johannesburg to Mel one way in July/Aug it doesn't apply the 35% off
They are Qantas operated Johannesburg - Sydney - Melbourne

    Strange

    • it says from 11:59pm tonight! I was trying it too and wondering why

however I dont see anything advertised for 35% off

unfortunately, im looking for Melb to BKK flights Mid Jan return end Jan (flexible with dates)

but all paid flights are $800 ish return, when if I travel in feb its down to $450 ish

      which kind of sux

      • The discounted points payment are showing up for other flights already I tried Melb - La it shows up 35% off points.

I got the email as well - not sure why there isn't a banner yet on their site

        • What page do you see the discounted points? Is it in the 'check' or 'book' tab?

      • I can see discounted points flights already

    • In the T&C, depart from Australia and NZ ONLY.

  • redeem for business class flights more value per dollar

    • -1

Only if you value the business class flights at the price they are charging for them.

      • +1

I'm happy to pay 3-5x price for lie-flat bed, priority service, and quality food & beverage. Worth it for me, but I love flying more than most.

    • +3

35% off only applies to international economy award redemptions

  • man i was so keen last time this was offered - 50% off classic reward flights. I need SYD>HON and Return from LAX>SYD for my honeymoon next September. Had the chance and missed it now they arent releasing any more reward seats. The QFF program is on the way down. And is it just me or are flights getting more expensive if you use points + pay? SYD>LAX return is now over $2k each return for next September…WTF!

    • +1

For HNL just book with Jetstar don't use QF points. You end up on JQ metal half the time anyway.

      • -1

No you don't. If it states operated by Qantas, it will be a Qantas Aircraft. If it says Operated by Jetstar then it will be Jetstar.

        • +1

They can do a switcheroo at the last minute though and switch you to a Jetstar plane.

        • +1

Not always. I've flown QF metal to HNL and numerous times 80 Jetstar passengers come running over and get on the QF plane. Luck of the draw depending on loads.

        • -1

@973728: They can't switch from A Qantas Plane to a Jetstar plane. They can possibly switch Jetstar to Qantas though.

  • So email only states economy flights or will this work for business class too?

    • +3

You've already answered your own question?

      • -6

I'm not asking what's stated in the email but if it will work for business too, smarty. People might have experience from similar deals in the past.

  • +1

Can you use the Qantas giftcards to pay for redemption taxes? Has anybody done it before?

    • I tried a few ways, seems like it's not possible.

I didn't try calling them tho

  • +3

Exceptionally good deal for those heading to London for extended stays. My guess is their fuel surcharge rip off has led to redemptions drying up on economy, with people taking advantage of business/first, and other carriers, which are all usually better value than Qantas economy for redemptions. The normal rates are pretty poor, with return taxes costing over half (in some instances over 80%!) of the cost of a heavily discounted return ticket.

    • Yeah the London flights Are pretty cheap now actually.

I wish they'd include business class in these deals though!! I'm 6"3 and it is basically the only way for me to travel…

      • Know how you feel. It's a tossup between burning 85k extra points, and geting there comfortably.

        • I'm more than happy to because otherwise I'll be exhausted by the time I arrive… and my back will be screwed.

But I looked ages ago there are no business class tickets for June

        • @knick007: The popular routes are always booked out for business and first. If you go to another European destination (one served by Emirates), you shouldn't struggle to find availability. Madrid, Paris, Brussels etc. And better to fly out from the continent to avoid the outrageous premium passenger duty the UK charges ostensibly to combat climate change.

        • @knick007: Oh BTW, if you need availability in June in business class, one alternative is to fly to Asia first (might have to do this uncomfortably with a budget airline), then onwards from HK or Singapore. The taxes out of Hong Kong are amazingly low, about $50 regardless of class. You can fly BA or Cathay for about 130k points in first class from there, and avoid the taxes nearly entirely.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: You'd be surprised to know most cities are all booked out.. I tried every option I could think of.

Cathay charges Qantas some sort of ridiculous premium to book a Cathay flight with Qantas points maybe it'll be slightly less now this sale is on.

        • @knick007: Maybe it was first I was looking at, but in late July there was no problem getting first class (and I think business…) with Cathey or BA. Cost a little bit more (like 10k more points - as they're not a tight codeshare partner like Emirates), but only $50 tax.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Late June there were no classic rewards for First or Business. Late July there's nothing coming back from London but I can come back from Frankfurt, the fees from Cathay are just crazy though.

      • -2

I'm 6 5 and pull the can I sit in the exit row every flight. Have only been knocked back once. Saves paying for business..

        • I've tried exit rows and really don't think they make that much difference. The seats are always uncomfortable and are narrower.

Don't forget Amex Qantas deal as well. Can buy qantas vouchers.

    • Which deal is this - can you link to it please?

      • Unless you've already registered your card, it's not available.

    • Has this deal expired?

      • Now all you need to do is use your registered American Express® Card and make the qualifying purchase online at qantas.com or at your local travel agent of $700 or more to get a $100 credit. Credits are generally issued within 5 business days of an eligible transaction. But be quick - this offer is only available until 31 December 2015. Terms and Conditions apply.

        • Thanks Apples.

  • It should be in the subject line this only apply for INTERNATIONAL flights. Not for domestic. Maybe put it in the main listing description.

  • I am booking the flight from Sydney to Hong Kong in Feb but the discounted point doesn't show up? Do I need to do anything?

    • Is it economy class on a Qantas plane?

      • Yes, they are.

    • classic reward flight?

      • Yea, they are.

The discounted points, do they show on the search page or the book and pay page?

        • What dates are you looking at and what's the number of points showing on the system?

        • Showing up as 19,500 points when I search Feb 25. Pretty damn good.

        • +1

Just did a search with for Mon 29 Feb 16 (outbound) and Fri 11 Mar 16 (inbound) and it's showing 39000 points (which I believe is already discounted) once you've selected the flights on the search page.

        • Thanks guys, i tried again, some of them showed discount, some didn't, maybe they are not direct flight.
I want to get the business class as we will travel with our 6 months twins.
          Many thanks.

        • @wangsk: Only valid for economy.
