Dell Inspiron 15 Signature Edition Laptop $699 at Microsoft Store

560

It's back again for the 4th times. There is no expiry date as per Microsoft reps. They only said until all sold out.

You can replace the HDD with SSD, but I was told it will void the warranty.

Boxing day starts very early this year. Merry Xmas everyone.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2015

Only thing concerns me is the weight..

    • Weight: 2.45kg!

      • Yea I bought one anyhow. Hoping to have this docked so should be ok.
Any idea how long cashrewards take to show up the purchase? I did go through their website to order.
        Also any SSD recommendations? Thanks!

        • it takes forever. i brought this last month, never receive email from cashrewards.

        • Excuse my ignorance, but what does "docked" mean?

        • +4

          @nuchalis:
docked = station on your desk
most ppl using laptop because of it's portability (on the couch , bed etc), some like just to put it on the desk (docked)

  • Lappy just died and looking for a new laptop. I have an ssd from my old Lappy. Is it worth voiding the warranty?

    • +1

Pretty sure that's bullshit. They just won't cover your "software" warranty and obviously any user damage.

doesn't seem to be any void stickers. Keep the drive it comes with, use loctite on the screws and they'll never know you've opened it come warranty time

        • That loctite comment is very dangerous if the user doesn't know what you meant. Don't use normal off the shelf loctite from reject shop. Use a proper thread locking version or it will reveal itself even earlier to the warranty tech.

        • I doubt the warranty techs care. They'd have to:
          a) be trained to specifically note that the screws aren't locktite
          b) care

If this is even a consideration, perhaps Dell isn't a good option for your purchase :)

  • I play medium level games, pretty old games too. Think Civ 5 and the likes.
    Will this laptop be sufficient?

    • Civ 5 will run fine and has a touchscreen version that works fantastic! ;P

  • Is this an ispiron 3000 or 5000 series?
Can anyone confirm whether it has a backlit keyboard

    • +2

      It doesn't have backlit keyobard.

    • 5558

    • Learn to touch type, it's the best money saving bargain and you don't have to deal with key glare :)

      • +1

Got any tips for learning? After 20 years of 2-finger typing I fing it hard to change!

        • +1

Practise. Typing software. Covering your keyboard (hands) with paper or better yet, blank key caps.

  • My first Dell was a Latitude and was a brick but lasted forever. But 10Gb hdd will only get you do far. How's the build quality these days for the Inspiron?

    • well inspiron is entry model ,so do not expect too much. but ok for normal home use

      • +1

My first laptop was a Dell Inspiron also, lasted me a good 8 years before I bought a new Inspiron earlier this year through Dell factory outlet. They've served me well so far :)

        • love those inspirons, brother used one through uni then handed it down to me for uni. Gave it away to relatives, still going strong after about 10+ years now

  • Would this be good for a 2016 year 7 student for a BYOD?

    • I think so.

      it supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac

    • if you do not mind the weight.

    • +1

Would be fine, but something smaller, less weight and longer battery life might be better.

    • 15 inch is going to be too heavy to carry to school every day. You need something like a 13 inch and a large external screen at home.

    • +1

If your kid tells you they need a laptop at school, particularly in year 7, they lying :P All we ever did was play games on them.

      • Agree with this

      • +1

If your kids tell you all they are doing on the laptop is playing games, they are lying…

        • amen!

  • +2

Nice laptop. I bought it last time.

Positive: good price for specs, quality design, nice FHD graphics and touchscreen.
Neg: heavy, hdd makes it slow so must upgrade to ssd.

No warranty avoid sticker. I had to return it because the screen and bazel had gap which was unusual.

    • How many ram slots does it have? How many are taken up?

      • +2

        2 slots. both used 4gx2

    • Just checking that it has a DVD drive?
I see it in the specs but couldn't make it out in the picture

      Edit:

Ok i presume they just got lazy with the screenshots for this:
From the us site there are at least 2 different signature series

      no dvd and crapier specs
      http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Dell-Ins…

      similar spec with dvd drive
      http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Dell-Ins…

      • it does have dvd drive. that pic is wrong one.

    • Is there space for the SSD, or do you need to remove something?

      • +2

remove orginal hdd. or you want to make ssd+ hdd, might need to remove dvd drive

        • Thanks! Yes, I was thinking of getting one of the ~$100 240gb SSDs we see here, for OS and some software, and keeping HDD for data… I don't use a DVD much anyway I guess…

    This is also 40% off, was $1,698.99 now $1018.99 - http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-15-5558-laptop/pd?oc=y5104… from http://www.dell.com/au/p/deals/popular-laptop-deals?

I don't know about Dell though. Got a desktop from them and no end of glitches.

The site is short on information too.

  • Wifi in the 5k series inspirons can be really poor, alot of the previous models have no antenna in the back of the screen and are so poor users often buy a usb wifi antenna instead.

  • 2 Points per $1(Flat rate) for Microsoft from Qantas/Velocity online shopping mall is better than Cashrewards' 1% Cashback on Hardware.

  • Powerful enough to play Dota 2 at low/medium setting?

    • yes

  • Dick Smith has the hp ac106tx for 699 right now. I think may be a better option as it has an amd m330. It's not FHD, but very reasonable

    • if you mean r5 m330 2G.
      according to game debate.com
"In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Intel HD Graphics 6000 Mobile are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon R5 M330 2GB."

  • +1

    I got one last time.
It's a lot better than I was expecting. Yes it's heavy but if that's not a priority then it's really good.
The number pad included in the keyboard was a nice addition. Speakers much better than my Lenovo that's three times more expensive.
I got it for my boy and so far plays Minecraft and spore without issues.
I saw a similar model at jb HiFi. Same 5000 series Dell but lower resolution screen and no touch screen which was selling for just over $1100. So the inclusions for this model are great.

    • agree. i got one for my parents. they are happy.

  • Is it easy to upgrade ram and SSD in this if required?
The way things are going 8gb might need doubling soon.

    • +1

      check youtube, very easy.

  • Hmm, I'm confused about a few things.

Where is the DVD Drive which it mentions in the spec sheet located?
Isn't the i5-5200U equipped with the Intel HD5500 not the HD6000 (according to intel spec sheet)? Are they the same thing?

    • +1

that pic is wrong. dvd located at normal position, right side of the laptop. cpu is i5 5250u, come with intel hd 6000. some info always incorrect on the website.

  • Thanks OP.

  • damnnn oos

    • Same here.
