  • so is the apple tv good for Australian streaming services like Netflix, Stan, Presto etc. please? Just after an easy to use streamer for someone who isn't tech inclined. Thank you.

    • Good for Stan and Netflix. No Presto support, I believe.

      • Actually, you can stream Presto to it. You need to select and start from the app (on your iPad or iPhone), then select the streaming option from within the app. During play you can either use the Apple TV remote or the instigating device for play, pause, ff, rw etc.

If you have an iDevice :(

    • Yes very simple to use and set up.

      • thanks, yes I think this is the gift I'm looking for.

        • but really annoying the $25 promotional code doesn't appear to work no matter what I do to enter it.. mind you, the web site checkout is playing up a lot also.

    • buy one of those little android boxes for $60-$80 …. plays all formats, and you can load which ever streaming clients you like ……

They have replaced my apple TV which is off to Ebay.

This is last gen Apple TV, i believe a chromecast would be a better/cheaper option?

    • +5

Chromecast is cheaper but god not a better option.

      • yeah not good if you don't have a phone / tablet to cast FROM.

    • +1

      Cheaper, but not better.

    • The difference is that you can stream stan and netflix to the apple TV (plus a bunch of other stuff including youtube, Fox sports news, etc). With Chromecast you need to use another device (usually your phone/tablet) to load netflix/stan/youtube then send it from your phone/tablet to the chromecast.

In other words, it all depends if you're happy using your phone or tablet each time you watch (chromecast), or if you just want to use a remote (Apple TV). The Apple TV is generally better if the family want to use it to it's always available.

  • Yes this is last generation, ATV 4 is now out enabling the installation of apps.

    • and it's about 3X the cost.

      • With 4 X the Storage, and 4 X Ram, 4 X usability.

enjoy driving in your Tesla, I'll enjoy driving in my Hyundai. For short, daily, city trips we'll arrive at the destination together.

        • if we are car pooling, is there space in the Tesla ?

What a weird analogy. The new Apple TV has an App Store and a completely different remote, allowing for games and developer-created content. With newer hardware and a modern touch-input for navigating a movie or TV show, it actually works where the previous Apple TVs have failed. I don't think you will end up at the same place at all.

        • @Jesmond:

haters gonna hate, or haters just don't know the difference

          ATV3 = can't install any apps
          ATV4 = can install apps.

essentually like purchasing an iPhone without being able to install apps, useful when streaming providers develop them……not just for the games

        • @rokkz: There was never a good reason why the ATV could not have more apps .. if they allow other TV streaming apps and dedicated streaming like Netflix why not a Plex app? Probably because Netflix and others kick back money to Apple and Apple in turn wanted to negotiate content for their own services (which are yet to eventuate).

        • @Jesmond: the analogy was to try to equate the enhanced storage, speed and COST of the ATV4 to the ATV3 - I don't care if the ATV4 has app support and can run games, I just want something simple where the end user (who is not technically inclined) can turn it on, select Stan, Netflix, Youtube etc. and then just watch the show.

As long as there is continued support for the ATV3 then it will suit this user's needs perfectly.

So in that result.. both ATV3 and ATV4 both allow the end user to view streaming content, there is no need for electric windows, cup holders, CD players and TV screens for every passenger (to stay with the car analogy).

The above is also one of the key reasons why I STILL use my 2nd generation (2008? 2009?) WD TV media player in preference to my android based media player with Kodi - it just sodding works! Switch it on, connect a USB drive (or stream through the network) and press play. No updates every time I switch it on, no need to update the database with metadata for files etc. IT. JUST. WORKS.

I could have built them a RaspPi2 / Kodi / OSMC media streamer.. but it's way too complicated for them to use and see my personal reasoning above.

Some people want all the extras, bell and whistles. Others just want it to work. I'm more pragmatic and don't care about aesthetics as long as the device does what it claims it can do.

        • @Elijha:

You can install the Plex app on the ATV4 https://blog.plex.tv/2015/11/02/plex-on-the-new-apple-tv/

  • Is Apple TV 3 worth it if you have the first gen?

    • +2

      Nope

    • +1

Definitely not a real upgrade. The only real upgrade over v1 is the v4 which is why it costs so much.

      • ok Thanks :-)

    • If by 1st gen you meant the white one, then yes, absolutely.

      • Why? What more does it do?

        • For me, maybe 1080p, Netflix. In general more "tiles" and support for extra content, streaming services including Stan etc. Sure you could customise it, but for the average punter, the Apple TV 3 has been the best one in terms of price and functionality - until the Apple TV 4 came out.

        • @quarrymaster:

An ok cheers. Guess that's why I need a chromecast as well as my ATV1.

    • If you want to stream 1080p, yes.

      • To be honest I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p :)

        • If your TV is small enough, sure. If the content is great, you'd even tolerate lower than 720p after a while, like stuff on iView!

  • this can be jailbroken and use usb storage with xbmc?

    • I heard an ATV3 jailbreak will be released any day now…

      • according to google jailbreaking ATV3 has been around for a while.

    • http://snow3rd.com/ say it's out now? Haven't try yet since I don't have one

  • No this one can't atv1/2 can. Apparently atv4 has a alpha version of kodi(xmbc) available. I haven't used it myself as I don't own atv4 yet.

  • +1 for this deal. I was going to buy the ATV3 out right for $86, and and a cheap 1TB hdd for the young fella's Xbox(around the 60-70 mark).
I have a chrome cast but the apple tv is standalone and can be operated by my 4&6 yr old so it's perfect for what I use it for. The chrome cast sits there collecting dust.

    • The Chromecast's price (I'm referring to 1st gen here) is the most attractive bit. Have to say I don't use it that often anymore. Was useful for playing catch-up TV on the big screen for Stations that required Flash. It also supports HDMI-CEC or whatever it's called, which is not available on the Apple TV pre 4th Gen.
