    NEVER happens to NSW

    • because the govt is greedy…

    • See the trend? Free transport in Labor states.

I feel it should have been free in Sydney after midnight to help ease congestion when it comes to entering/exiting stations and buses.

I was thinking to not go the city tonight for fear of packed car parks but if there's free public transport then Elder Park & Victoria Square here I come. :-)

    • Yeah, good luck. There'll still be hordes of peeps!

      • I live at Henley South so I might go to the Bay. Plenty of choice in my slow, boring town. :)

        • We just arrived at Fulham, Henley's a lovely part of the world mate, but it's soooo hot :-)

        • @mochariffic: Haha! I know, mate. It's 39 today and 35 tomorrow, but after that it will get little bit better. I hate the heat but it's that part of the year.

OP - might be worth adding in Melbourne Metro too rather than me duplicating for Melbourne

  • Look at that Opal logo

      We had it first :)

this happens every year, is it a bargain really?

    • +4

free is free is free !

sounds like a bargain to sydneysiders who never get a free lunch

    • +2

How on earth is this not a bargain? Other cities don't have it, and Adelaide and Melbourne don't HAVE to do it…

This will save some people upwards of $40 on taxi fares each way?

    • +1

Yeah bet it's real nice and safe where you are right? Lol

      • -1

Why yes, yes it is. Thank you for your concern.

  • Why not Sydney???

  • +2

I remember there was only 1 "fare free" day in sydney in last 12 years. It was monday of an ordinary week where most of the people bought weekly ticket.

  • +3

Other cities should follow suit. Well done Melbourne & Adelaide.

  • A good step up from the previous free travel only from midnight. Great deal to pair with the free Zooper Dooper tickets for the cricket and free fireworks :)
Hopefully Rail decide to run more than 2 cars on each line (especially after cricket) and not to bring the midi buses out

    • each train should be mandatory 3 car tonight, that was the briefing, (work there)

      • Good news :) any chance you can bring a non-decommisioned jumbo for me? ;)

shame half of the public transport in ADL atm is either closed down (train lines) or running at half capacity… buses etc.

    Will be a disaster zone.

    • +2

none of the train lines are closed down today

  • Why not Sydney, hey? Never?

    • It's anti-Sydney day, again

is there also free public trnasport in melbourne tonite?

  • Same thing should be done for all cities. At least give that incentive before getting rid of paper ticket

  • RAA are also running free buses between harbour town and glenelg
    https://www.holdfast.sa.gov.au/NYE

    • That place looked packed when we drove past before, it could be due to retail, do you think it's a good idea to try and park there later tonight?

  • Waited on the 3-car train after the cricket for 30 mins for it to leave at it's scheduled time of 10:50. Packed to the brim, breathe in to close the doors, meanwhile a whole platform was getting full of people going out. They have much better organisation for footy matches (trains go as they're full) why did it have to be such a rat race today?

    • Agree!!! And probably no arrangements to keep the buses and their seats neat and clean from garbage when so much of rush was already expected?
