Yes as you did not get the AmEx card from American Express itself. Ie. Your card was bank issued so no problems.

  • +1

Note it's only 0.5 qantas points for utility spend (except petrol which is 2 points. Compared to say discovery which is 1:1

  • What's the minimum credit limit on this card?

    • I would also like to know this from anyone that's applied?

      • +1

According to the T&C's min is apparently $2k!

  • Please don't go singing up for new credit applications guys

    • +5

I am sure some will do sing after signing up

    • A cappella

    • why not? or can I be your additional card holder under your card?

    • +1

      You guys! He he

  • Thanks I've been looking for a new Amex.
Just got approved within a minute!

  • Thanks! Just applied :)

  • anyone have a personal referral link..?

      • +1

        Thanks

      • Please excuse my ignorance, but is it possible to get both the 80k points + 50k points by using a referral link? Or is it just one or the other? I'm trying to find information on it but haven't found anything that explicitly states either.

        • No,I do not think so.Only one offer applies. If you apply through the referral link, you only need to spend $500 for the 1st 3 months to obtain the bonus points. You will have 2 lounge passes as well.

        • @Neoika:
Thanks a lot for your reply. I just called AmEx to confirm and you're right.

  • Do bank issued amex cards trough ANZ count as having an amex? Will I still be eligible for the 80k points?

    • No, only being just an American Express cardmember.

      • What about if i have signed up for that american express connect?

        • It won't matter. Only the card issuing institution matters.

  • Does purchase constitute bills?

    • Yes.

  • Thanks for the the deal OP, I couldn't find what eligible purchases were in the T&C's just a 3k spend on anything?

    • Apparently so. You can even pay your family through Paypal and it constitutes a purchase.

      • awesome, buying some Bose QC25's with points might not be a bad deal.

      • +4

lol why paying fees to paypal? this is joke of the year

        • is it possible to gift and not pay fees?

  • 2,500 bonus Qantas Points after your first Card spend in Australia on selected Qantas products and services

May I know what are Qantas products and services?

    • 10 . Selected Qantas products and services are Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. directly from Qantas and Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays and Qantas branded non-airfare products.

      • So need to purchase a Qantas air ticket is that what it is saying? Hardly fly Qantas nowadays. Anything else that could be purchase to constitute as Qantas products and services?

        • +3

Keep focused on the main goal! Don't worry too much about eligibility for the 2500 points when there's 80000 points available under different criteria.

        • @octagonalman:

So 80,000 is equivalent to $500 gift voucher is that right? Does this mean the only reason to get this card is to gain $250 profit? And should cancel it after a year?

Any other reason to keep it after a year?

        • +2

          @wildstone:

I have never considered the gift card equivalent as I'll always find someone-(family/friend) to benefit from reward airfare value - that way the 80000 points is worth closer to $1000.

It might be a good idea to cancel before a year has elapsed - before the membership renewal arrives. Set a calendar reminder so you don't forget.

        • @octagonalman:

Thanks, will keep that in mind.

        • +1

just go to a qantas shop and purchase a cheap toy plane lego kit like i did a few years and i got the bonus ff points.

        • @wildstone: Gift vouchers are generally poor value for FF point redemption. 80,000 points will get you nearly to the USA in business class.

        • +1

          @wildstone:

I hate this way of thinking and the fascination people have with these shitty gift cards.

76,000 is two business class fares from PER-BNE and back again.

The price difference between a red and business class fare on those legs.
          Red - $315
          Business - $1929

          http://imgur.com/a/guvAa

The true value in these points promotions are for the massive savings on business fares.

        • @ameno:

Hi ameno, thanks for the insight, however isn't taxes and other fees to be paid on top of the points? Is there any way we could find that out to get the real equivalent of money spent if the fares were to paid by cash?

        • @ameno:

          Some considerations:

          1) What if you don't (or rarely) fly, whether it be due to lack of interest, phobia, lack of time (family/work) or otherwise?
          2) Would you pay $1929 for that fare anyway if you had to pay cash? If you would, then you can see it as a significant saving and calculate the value of the points based off that $1929 cost. Otherwise, you're artificially increasing your perception of value of the points by basing it off the $1929 value.
          3) What if you're the type of traveller that wants to get from A to B from the cheapest price possible? i.e. you wouldn't even consider Qantas to begin with
          4) What if the dates you want aren't available? Particularly with Qantas, they're notorious for relatively poor availability. Even more so for regular full-time workers working Mon-Fri 9am-5pm who try to fly Friday evening and back Sunday evening (domestic).

I still think (and agree) that there is better value to be had by redeeming it for flights in premium cabins, but you simply can't apply the logic to everyone because it is not applicable to everyone.

Trying to convince someone who never flies to "make the savings in business class" is like trying to sell a guy make-up and telling him the $200 eyeliner is now selling for $2. In fact, it'd probably be easier to sell the eyeliner.

Another analogy would be buying a $50k car for $30k, and only buying it for $30k because you felt there was $20k worth of savings, even though you would've been perfectly happy with a $5k car to get you from A to B. Are you actually making a $20k saving? Not really - because you were happy to get a $5k car anyway. You've just overspent by $15k. If you had intended to buy the $50k car anyway then it would be a totally different discussion.

        • @wildstone:

Yes you almost always have to pay taxes on top. You can try and make a dummy booking if you have enough points for the route you'd like to check, otherwise someone else can do a dummy booking for you to check.

        • Its not much of a saving when you take tax into consideration

ie say a fare cost 100,000 points for what would be 2c a fare, if you were to be taxed and fees $1000, that changes to 1c a fare.

Better than gift cards which are around 0.55c

But would you normally have paid $1000 for a business class flight.

Qantas points on business flights are only really good for those who already buy business class.

For the rest of us economy users, the taxes and fees still makes its an expensive.. unless we want to splurge.

There is too much focus on the points conversion pre tax and fee and not post tax and fees

      • Although this specifically excludes Jetstar, I can confirm I ppurchased a JQ fare and not only got 2500 points but 5000 gold the gold card.

  • "Pay no annual Card fee for up to 4 Supplementary Cards so you can earn more Qantas Points". Does anyone have experience as to whether Supplementary Cards also qualify for 2 lounge passes. If you were to get 4 lounge passes all together, then that would almost offset the $249 annual fee.

    • +1

I have no personal experience but I would assume that only the primary card holder will have access to the bonus invites. Just like how all earned Qantas points will goto only the primary account holder's account.

  • What would be the best way to secure the full points without actually spending the $3000? As in basically clear the 3k with the 3k spend. I'm not sure I'm making sense hah! Just woke up from my NYE Crazy night.

Also when do the points become active. I have a flight to Thailand needed at the start of February. The insurance will be a bonus too.

    Thanks!
    Happy new year y'all

    • You'll be waiting up to 90 days for the points after you qualify (that is, after you accrue $3,000 in spending).

  • Think I'll get one since I should be ok as I only have an Anz amex. Anex connect won't affect it will it?

  • So i could transfer $3000 via paypal to a friend/family +2.4% + $0.30 fee. $3072.30? not sure if this would count?

    • I wouldn't recommend it: Firstly, it's a waste of $72.30 for pretty much no reason. Second, PayPal will likely limit your account with a sudden transaction such as that. A limitation means PayPal will freeze your account, and possibly the recipients, until you satisfy them that you're low risk. Sometimes this can end badly.

  • I have an AMEX Corporate card under my name - does anyone know if this would preclude me from the deal?

  • Is this the same lounge pass that you get sent? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Qantas-Club-Lounge-Pass-expires-N…

    • This listing 262220264520 has been removed, or this item isn't available.

  • Also, though it is mentioned that you need to make a qantas purchase (flight) to get the extra 2500 pts, it appears you also need a qantas purchase to get the complimentary lounge passes.

    • +2

Refundable business class fare will do the job. Ade-Mel is the cheapest I've found.

      • WoW !! That's gutsy!!

        • I'lll admit I was a bit apprehensive when I did it. When I got the lounge passes, then refunded the fare in full, I was well satisfied with my strategy.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: So they automatically sent the passes?

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: is it always fully refundable?

        • +1

@cheapo999: I had a look and it seems to be. Do your search and click on the 'i' next to the fare types.

        • +1

@cheapo999: Just make fully sure you are booking a fully refundable business class seat. Discounted business is not refundable. Take a screenshot to be super sure if anything goes wrong.

        • +1

@peck: A long story, but I believe it is automatically triggered. Be prepared to wait a month or two before refunding.

        • @peck: Thanks I definitely will print it out just in case. of dispute

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Thanks, gotta be carefull lotta money involved :D.

        • +1

          @cheapo999:

Might try this tactic what is a refundable fare Mel - Adl even worth? I assume
You would book for 2+ months ahead to be sure you get the passes in time before the flight date to then cancel.

        • @ezza:

Looked at booking a flexible mel - adl fare and terms state this:

          Cancellations (including no show)
          Before the scheduled departure time:
Re-booking - see 'Booking Changes' above.
Ticket value can be used towards a new booking of equal or higher value for travel anywhere on the Qantas network within 12 months of the date that the original ticket was issued. This credit must be used within 12 months of the date the original ticket was issued.
Any credit is the Australian dollar price.
Refund permitted. A cancellation fee of A$88 per person applies

So its $88 cancel fee? Unless I'm looking at the wrong fare?
The options of fares are Economy Reward, Red E-deal, Flexible then it moves into Business Reward or Business

        • @ezza: It has to be Business class, not Business Reward or Business Sale. And there is a Card Payment Fee (AUD $7.00 fee per passenger).

        • @cheapo999: This begs the question, is the Credit card payment fee refunded to Qantas when they reverse the transaction/re-credit your card, and therefore is that included in your refund?

        • +1

          @peck: It is.

      • Yeah I want to know also did they send you the lounge passes straight away?

      • Why does it have to be business class?

        • +2

They seem to be the only fully refundable, fee free cancellations.

  • +1

Took the plunge and applied its pretty good for a $249 annual fee.
Will cancel before the 1sy year is up!

  • I would be interested to hear if people get their lounge passes by any other means (other than by booking a QF Flight) I am planning on a One-way Business class redemption in about 9 months time, and will try to get the passes that way (even though I will already have lounge access)

  • would it satisfy the requirements if you got a classic rewards seat with points and paid the taxes with the card?
Also good to see they have lowered points and taxes with QFF program. checking for South America and 90000 pts and round 400 in taxes is pretty good. Forget what is was previously but pretty sure was quite a bit more. Also like how you can easily get one way with QFF system (without paying return flight costs)

  • So i got my card in the mail today and the referral link i generate for the QF premium card is a 50k offer :(

hopefully they'll update the referral offer to match this one..

(it does let me refer the QF ultimate card though which gives 80k points but has a $450 fee)

    • You signed up through someone's referral link?
The welcome said you only get 50k? instead of 80k?

      • I signed up through the link in this thread..the offer says 80k
Im saying now when i try refer people for this card it only gives me an offer to send that has 50k

  • Read somewhere that you can top of QFF points and pay for them with the card and that is classified as Qantas purchase. Was an old post though, anyone know if still works?

    • is there a minimum you must buy?

      • i think you can buy 500 points for 20 bucks

    • Let me know if you find out — I want those passes.

  • I applied for this on 6th Jan at around 7PM. It said that it will take five to ten business days to determine my eligibility. Is it normal for it to take this long? I thought it said an answer in sixty seconds. Perhaps I'm a complicated case, LOL.

    • +1

Same thing happened to me, i called the next day and the agent told me it was approved and card will be out in days to me.
This was followed by a text message saying it was all approved.
      Call them on 1300 557 743

      • Thanks, just called them and they said it was approved immediately and is being sent out.

  • Will they charge the first year annual fee right away, or can I cancel this card after 364 days :)

    Thank you…

    • Every credit card company who has annual fee charges on the 1st statement.
By cancelling 364 days later you are avoiding the next year's annual fee charge.

      • Thank you!!

  • Does anyone here have any experience with getting the sign-up bonus who also happen to have a David Jones AMEX storecard (the one with no annual fee)?

  • Good deal if you are considering travelling in the next year, are the lounge passes valid for 1 year??

    • Generally a year or more, but there's no rule to it. I got some from Westpac last year with a two year expiry. YMMV

  • Applied last Friday, not instantly approved online, but called them up and they said it has been approved and ,ailed, received today. Very good deal. And yes I already had other bank issued amex card, so it is not an issue.

  • Does anyone know if the complimentary card gives you airport lounge as well?

    • Doubt it. It's two passes on your first Qantas spend each year.

  • Did anyone else get a 5,000 bonus points for card activation? Just checked my points statement, and on the very first transaction it has an activation bonus.
I wonder if this is in addition to the 80k points, or part of it.

    • +1

Pretty sure it's part of it.

      • I got that bonus too, but no it's not supposed to be part of this deal… I looked into it and saw that the 5,000 activation bonus applies to the Ultimate card sign-up offer. But the Ultimate card has only 50,000 rather than 80,000 in total sign-up bonii. So we definitely need to make sure Amex follows through with the Premium sign-up offer, as their might be a glitch in which offer is being applied to our accounts.

  • Dang for $249 annual I got a return flight to Vietnam and another one way on top. Decent value if I say so myself. All thanks to Ozbargain.

No just need to test JohnHowardsEyebrows strategy for those two Qantas lounge passes and I'm set.
