    • Johnny is the CC Guru - I have 100% faith in him!!

  • Just wanted to ask if you purchase the Qantas business flight for the lounge passes then refund the tickets does the cost still counts towards your total eligible purchase?

    • +1

If you've received the points, you're unlikely to lose them. If you haven't yet qualified, then no, it probably won't count.

  • So it's best to book a flight two months in advance. Get the lounge passes and get the points then apply for the refund. When you're booking these flights are there any cc fees that you'll have to pay?

    • +2

Fully refundable. Best to book a flight 11 months in advance, just in case something gets held up.

  • +1

    Thanks for your help John!

  • Does the business class refund trick work towards the minimum spend as well?

    • It would…the problem might arise when you refund it though, as you'd have a credit. Amex would have to pay it back to you, but they might feel inclined to review your points eligibility (in theory they can deduct as well as add).

      • It does mean that you have more than 3 months to spend the $3k though, if you weren't planning on getting the $3k back in cash.

    • Not worth the risk.

      • +1

To clarify my point, the business class refund trick is worth it for the lounge passes, but to get the 80,000 bonus points I would make sure that your minimum was not including spending on something that you are planning on getting re-credited with, such as the business class refund trick.

  • Still trying to work out how to get these 2 x Qantas lounge passes.

The t&c's on card points to reference 10:
    10. Selected Qantas products and services are Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. directly from Qantas and Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays and Qantas branded non-airfare products. Subject to the Qantas American Express Cards Points Terms and Conditions

Which is vague. It then links onto this page, which has clear reference to how to get the lounge passes:
    https://icm.aexp-static.com/Internet/IntlHomepage/japa/AU_en…

Going onto Qantas's page to purchase points is this:
    https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/program/usingPoints/topupP…

This can only be done over the phone, however the t&c's on points purchase suggested you can only do so if your short of points in redeeming a flight:
    19. Top-up Points
19.1 If Members do not have sufficient Points to redeem a particular Reward Flight, they may purchase additional Points towards that Reward Flight at the rates specified by Qantas Loyalty, subject to the following:
    (a) the purchased Points may only be credited to that Member's account;
    (b) the Points may be purchased only to redeem a specific Reward Flight;
    (c) each purchase must be for a minimum of 500 Points and a maximum of 20,000 Points, and in such blocks of Points as Qantas Loyalty may specify;
    (d) the number of Points purchased must not exceed 15% of the number of Points required for that Reward Flight, rounded up to the closest multiple of 500 Points;
    (e) each Member may purchase additional Points only once in each twelve consecutive month period; and
    (f) once Points have been purchased, they cannot be refunded.
19.2 The purchase of additional Points does not guarantee the availability of a Reward Flight.
19.3 Points do not have a monetary value and cannot be converted to money. They cannot be sold, transferred or exchanged other than in accordance with these Terms and Conditions. The prices for additional Points do not represent a monetary value for Points.

Has anyone been able to work through this rather than purchasing an actual flight?

  • Referral link appears to be 80000. This should be updated on wooo referral page. Can't see exact details though. Anyone know?

  • Got my card January 8th
    Spent $2,500 by January 20th
    80,000 points transferred January 22nd

Thought it would take 3 months+

    • Wow you got your 1st statement already? They are quick to bill the $249 annual fee eh

      • Nope haven't even had my first statement yet

  • +1

The referral links page is up to date. All referrals for this card now match the current 82,500 offer.
There are a few referrals in there that are clearly outside of the required protocol - i.e. no commentary is allowed. e.g. USERNAME 82,50 offer…
They should be edited by the mods to keep it fair for everybody.

Anyhow, the amex referral wiki is here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals
Might as well help out a fellow ozbargainer at no cost to yourself.
And when you've received your card, create your own referral link and jump in the pool with the rest of us. ;)

    • To confirm what does the person who signs up under your referral get? Then what do you get for referring?

      • The person can potentially get 82,500 points with the same conditions as this deal (3k spend). The person referring will get 15,000 points if they have the premium card

      • +1

There is no benefit for the person applying other than sharing the love.
Of course the applicant should generate their own referral link after they receive their card and hope somebody else is kind to them in return at a later date.

  • Can anyone provide an answer on what are selected purchases to get the 2,500 points. Could I buy a 15 dollar toy plane from qantas gift store ?

    • +1

      The T's & C's state this:

"10. Subject to the Qantas American Express Cards Points Terms and Conditions"

Excludes Qantas branded non-airfare products, so I'm guessing a toy plane is out.

  • +1

Just got my 80,000 points today. It came in two batches. I got 5,000 points when I used the card for the first time (activation bonus), then I got my remaining 75,000 yesterday after reaching $2,700 in spend.

Now just gotta work on the Qantas spend to get 2,500 and some lounge passes.

If I do the 500 / $20 points top-up are they going to grill me on what I'm going to spend the points on, and go through my account in detail etc?

  • Anyone know if I purchase a domestic Jetstar flight does that constitute a Qantas purchase? Freak excludes Jetstar. So guess it'll have to be refundable business class flights.

    • +2

Problem is the merchant will be Jetstar.
Some possible ways to trigger the Qantas spend:

      • Frequent Flyer redemption (i.e. pay the taxes);
      • Seat selection on existing Qantas reservations;
      • Point top ups (if you can justify buying 500 points to the operator on the hotline);
      • Fully refundable flight.

Obviously the last one is often the only avenue available to most. I'll update when I get my passes to indicate the lead time between spending with Qantas and receiving the passes (in theory you should be able to refund almost immediately and the passes will still be triggered, but this may not be the case).

      • Thanks so much for your help. I will wait for your outcome and also explore the possibility of points top ups (just need a convincing reason). Anther thing is if you refund the tickets do you lose the 2500pts bonus?

      • has anyone tried purchasing QF flights using points and paying just the tax and receiving the lounge passes after? does that work?

        cheers

        • Don't know if anyone has responded to you but I believe that should work because the taxes are still billed by QF, i.e. it's still a "QF" purchase

edit: I just realised the comment you replied to has the answer to your question…….

  • Anyone know if I can sign up for The Platinum Business CC when I already have the Qantas Amex Premium?

  • +3

I purchased 500 QF points over the phone… I was genuinely 418 points short of booking an international fare.
I got a bit grilled by the consultant who done the purchase for me, around where I am going, whats the points required etc etc. This was late last week, I logged into my Amex online account today and can see 2,500 bonus points with another line saying Lounge passes. So I guess I cracked the code and should be getting the lounge passes in the mail.

    • @ezza, What part of your account did you see 'Lounge Passes'? I am stumbling around their web site and can see the 2,500 points for my Qantas transaction under 'View Points Summary' but I cannot see 'Lounge Passes'.

      • +1

If you click on the plus symbol, you'll see a breakdown of the points given, and it should also list lounge passes activated.

        • Brilliant! Thanks Johnny. The worst thing about churning CC's is getting to know new web sites.

    • Can I ask how much Qantas charges for fees and taxes?

      • Depends where you're going. Mel-Syd a bit over $30. Going overseas, $200-400.

        • Excellent. That works for me. time to call Qantas customer service.

  • +1

Purchased the 500pts from Qantas. Was a lot easier than I thought. Just searched for a flight online and told them about the points breakdown that I need and BAM! done.

  • FYI for those of you who use public transport (and can top up at 7/11), and want to rack up points quickly…
Go to 7/11 and top up your Myki (VIC) for example.
7/11 shows up as a petrol store so its 2 points = $1 (and they do accept AMEX)

  • +2

Got my 2 x Qantas Club invitation passes today in the mail. Looks like the 500 points purchase for $20 worked!

    • +1

How long did it take? I'm still waiting over a month later…

      • Purchased the 500 points on 8th Feb (my post above) and got the vouchers today so 21 odd days

        • OK, thanks… might have to give them a call..

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: I made a flight booking on 3 Feb. & CC shows lounge passes activated. Awaiting their arrival.

        • Lounge passes received today. They included a contact phone number American Express Service Centre on 1300727169.

    • Hi Ezza, I want to buy 500 points for $20. I have 10,100 points (AMEX bonus points will be reflected on my qantas FF account on 19 Feb)…any advice on flights from melbourne to any place in oz which requires roughly 10,500 points? This will assist me in convincing qantas to let me buy 500 points so I can get the lounge passes.

I looked up sydney/brisbane/cairns/canberra/dubbo/towomba/adelaide….they are all either too expensive or below 10,000 points…

      Thanks in advance.

  • I received my card today. I'm a little worried how I'm going to reach the 3k spend as I my credit limit was a bit lower than I was hoping (was planning on buying an engagement ring to fulfill the requirements and pay back straight away) I don't spend enough on day to day things to rack up 3k in 3 months generally.
I see some people said transferring money to friend/family through paypal might work? Anyone tried this?

    • +1

You'd pay a hefty fee to transfer money with PayPal. Best bet is to simply pre pay the amount your limit is short by, in order to buy the engagement ring.

    • You can split across multiple cards for large payments. Pay what you can with the jeweler on the Qantas card, then pay the rest cash/debit card!

      • Not sure why down voted exactly.

        • +1

It wasn't me, but I am pretty sure that alex was saying that he needed to pay for the whole ring price with CC to reach his bonus minimum spend, but that this was below his credit limit. EG Min spend $3,000 credit limit $2,000, ring cost $3,000. And so, as per john's example, prepay $1000 to credit card, will give ability to pay $3k on the ring with CC ($1k above credit limit)

        • +1

@peck: Yeah I get that, but I read his comment as he has the cash to pay for an engagement ring in full, so why not just hit the $3k spend on the card then pay the rest in cash? No different to how he has put it forward, just that instead of say spending $10k on the card he spends $3k and the rest in cash, albeit missing out on some point however he will still get his bonus 80k.

Unless I read it wrong of course.

        • +1

Thanks guys for your helpful suggestions. I think I will try and preload the card (didn't know they allowed that) or as dazzywazzy suggested, just split payments between credit and debit cards. Either way I should still be able to reach the 3k :)

  • I just paid off my card (before receiving my statement) and almost immediately I received all of my bonus QFF miles. I don't know whether or not the 2 things were connected, but I feel that they were.

    • Did you already have a direct issued AMEX or is this your first?

      • +1

This is my 1st direct issued AMEX.

  • Hi guys am I right in saying that I can apply for the card for $249 per year and than apply for the supplementary card for my wife and not pay the 249 fee but we both are able to claim 80000 qantas points if we spend the minimum spend In the time frame? Many thanks in advance

    • Nope
Yes both of you will hold the card, but you are still the primary account holder and still only pay the one annual fee, but any time she uses the card it will get linked to your account. This also means that you are only eligible to get one set of 80k QF points.

      • Awesome. Thanks for the clarification

  • Is the 500 points for $20 expired?
    Link please.
    Thanks.

    • No link…you've gotta call them (and convince them you're topping up for a reward you're eyeing off).

      • Thanks

  • Hi guys, I want to buy 500 points for $20. Have you had a look in the shop? Do other rewards count? Otherwise, just tell them you're waiting on some points to come through on your credit card in a few days, and want to be ready to redeem your flight.

  • +1

does anyone know what is Referred Friend Bonus 42,500 Points? I haven't spend $3k yet but after receive 5000 activation bonus point today I have received this one. (and I haven't refereed anyone)
    Thanks

    • Did you add your Amex Referral Link to the Ozb WIKI? A few people may have used it?

      • I didn't add my referral link to referral page

        • Very strange then. If I was you, I would just wait until $3k spend hits, see if you also get your 80k points, if you don't, give them a call and they sort it. If you do get them, then go to Qantas website and book yourself a nice business class bonus.

    • Sounds like you only got the current deal (50k points - 5k on first spend, 42.5k on $1k, 2.5k on first Qantas spend).

      When did you apply?

      • Hey John have you received your lounge pass yet? I still have not received mine and I'm looking to cancel the card as well. =(

        • Still not mate. Emailed them last week, they responded that maybe my details didn't match between Amex and Qantas, and that that could create delays. Once it gets to two months post spend, I'll be going back to escalate. I had a similar issue with Westpac last year. It was 5 months (and multiple phone calls and emails, being told they'd been reported lost and reissued) before I got my passes.

The kicker though: finally they sent me two passes Express Post, seemingly outside of the normal proceess - two weeks later, four more passes arrived via the official channel. :D

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

Yeah I have my Amex and Qantas address not matching as well. When I tried to call up Amex they would just handball the matter to Qantas and vice versa. Getting quite annoying to me.

  • I have applied around 20 Feb and used credit card before 29 Feb

  • has anyone tried purchasing QF flights using points and paying just the tax and receiving the lounge passes after? does that work?

    cheers

  • Got the card, boooked flight, applied for upgrade using points, got upgraded and flying out today in business class. Thank you OP

  • Can anyone help with getting the 2500 Qantas shop points? Nearing 3 months cut off date and can't really think of anything to buy to get the 2500 points. What's the cheapest I could spend and where to trigger this bonus?

    • some people have purchased 500 ff points over the phone pretending that they need them for a ff spend. I personally booked a classic rewards domestic flight and played the $30 tax with my amex card and got the 2500 points.

  • I got the referred Friend Bonus 42,500 Points aswell. Very weird…I made sure that it said the 80,000 points. Used a referral from referral page. Probably have spent $700 on the card since ive had it. I applied and got accepted on the 21 Feb…first used for 24th Feb.

    • Send them an email. They're usually very responsive and helpful.
