Samsung 250GB Portable SSD + Laptop/Tablet/Phone Bag/Sleeve/Case (or any $2 Item) for $125 @ Harvey Norman

330

Was previously posted for $219 and $199, so I think this is a great price. Currently this SSD is $169 at Bing Lee and $179 at JB, with officeworks also at $148 (presumably price matching HN)

A very fast SSD which is small enough to fit in your wallet, yet it's description states that read/write speeds can go up to 450mb/s, with amazon reviews confirming speeds of >350mb/s

Already a good deal at $148, it is a bargain when you add the $25 Harvey Norman voucher. Add the SSD to your cart, add a $2 item to bump your cart to $150, and you'll be able to use your voucher for a $25 off, bringing the final price down to $125. To get your voucher, sign-up to HN's newsletter, and you will get it emailed.

Cheap ssds at hardly normal? What is this world coming to?

  • What is the advantage of a portable ssd over an external hdd?

    • +5

Speed, and much higher drop resistance.

    • Pretty much the usual arguements of SSD vs HDD: smaller (more portable), lighter, quieter, less power, faster, reliable (less failure), durable (higher drop resistance),

      • Does a HDD struggle to keep up with USB3? I would have thought the speed bottleneck was the USB?

        • +1

USB3 is capable of much higher speeds than traditional spinning hard drives are capable of. The bottle neck is most definitely not the USB standard.

Hence why this can clock at ~4-5x the speed a traditional external drive is able to.

This one is much smaller and lighter than a 2.5" external HDD. They basically package an mSATA internal SSD in a case with a tiny USB 3 interface board.

    • This thing is small… like smaller than a credit card small

  • In my experience where a USB HDD (as opposed to SSD) falls down is the inability of a lot of them to allow write caching. I am unsure if this is a restriction of the OS or a limitation/restriction of the USB to SATA controller.
Write caching setting is set in Windows Device Manager.
If you are wanting to have a 2nd drive in your PC, but it cannot accommodate it for some reason (e.g. my laptop can't accommodate a 2nd drive) you can use a USB3 drive instead, but the performance really suffers with the lack of write cache. I'd imagine with a USB3 SSD, these performance issues will be virtually gone.

  • it is a bargain when you add the $25 Harvey Norman voucher.

    Er, what voucher?

Edit: OK, I should have read it all.

  • Can anyone confirm if this is indeed an msata? I would like to use it to upgrade the 64gb ssd in my tablet.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks OP. Got ONE

    • Did you select pickup? What other item you added to make it $150 so as to get the extra $25? All the other $2 items I'm trying to add do not have a store pickup option or there is no stock available in the designated store for pickup.

      Any advice I'll be appreciated.

      • The Fuji a4 paper roll is a commonly stocked item did you try it?

      • There is no Harvey Norman store near me, I paid $5.95 for shipping and otdered a laptop bag with SSD

Thanks guys and OP. Got one, ended up getting a Targus backpack to make the $150 for the $25 welcome voucher. Awesome deal 👍🏻

  • Thank you, bought one with the Laser 16" laptop bag :)

  • Big thanks for this!

Bought with ream of paper total cost $125.50.

Now using as boot drive for my iMac 27".

Speedy and tiny. The cable weighs more than the drive!
