  • nexus 5x vs samsung s6?

    • +5

IMO, I would pick nexus because of Google updates and stock Android version. I don't like Samsung touch wiz and "some" of their apps you won't use.

    • 5X

    • +1

I am using Nexus 5X, it's an excellent phone. Also Nexus devices seem to retain value very well if you plan to sell it in a couple of years time for an upgrade.

HN offer is an excellent price. I bought in when price was higher and managed to price match it when the price dropped last week.

I think for Aus stock, this is price hard to beat (combined with HN voucher and AMEX offer).

      • Whats the call quality like? Thinking of getting one as a second phone.

        • It's very good.

Even though back cover is plastic, it feels very premium and high quality.

        • @fidelio:

Dual stereo speakers is on the Huawei 6p, not the 5x.

        • @newwizard: Yes you are right, just one speaker on top

    • +4

Honestly you people that say that the 5X is better than the S6 are crazy.

1080p IPS LCD screen vs 2k screen AMOLED screen which is industry leading.
Both have no expandable storage but the Nexus starts at 16gigs which is an absolute joke. The price difference is made up a bit more when you got the 32gigs
The Nexus 5's camera on paper sounds great as it is the exact same optics and sensor at the more expensive 6P, but the video and optical stabilasation makes it look like the person holding the camera is having a stroke. https://youtu.be/l_zth08zFLw?t=4m55s The Galaxgy S6 on the other hand has again an industry leading camera which is matched only by Samsung's other offerings, this year's iPhone and the LG V10.
Single front firing speaker vs bottom firing, Nexus gets a slight win here, but neither are stereo.
All plastic vs glass and metal
Snapdragon 808 vs Exynos 7420, the fastest chipset out right now
2 gigs of RAM vs 3 gigs of RAM
Comparable battery sizes and performance, which is never more than a day
No wireless charging on the 5X vs Qi and PMA on the S6

True, stock Android is "cleaner" than TouchWiz but this year Samsung has really cleaned up TouchWiz on all of their flagships as well, and now performs just as well as any softer Android skin such as HTC Sense.

      • +5

You need to consider price, some people prefer LCD screen over AMOLED. Advantages of Google stock Android, fast update etc. Also plastic build is more durable over glass, again this is personal preference. List goes on.

Saying someone is crazy for having different opinion is, well, quite mature isn't it? :)

      • +3

Not sure 2K is "industry leading" when Sony has a 4K screen… Also, I personally prefer 1080P, my experience with Samsung is that the screen uses up too much battery…

        • +2

That depends on what you're viewing. For mixed content (e.g. text with photos or videos, or games), OLED can be more power-efficient than LCD. Lots of details here.

You also need to realize that the Z5 Premium only just came out recently, and it only displays photos and videos viewed with the stock app in 4K.

"Industry leading" doesn't have to refer to the resolution. The accuracy of the colors on the S6 is certainly industry leading:

the Absolute Color Accuracy for the Basic screen mode is an impressive 1.6 JNCD, tied with the Galaxy Note 4 for the most color accurate display that we have ever measured for a Smartphone or Tablet. It is visually indistinguishable from perfect, and very likely considerably better than your living room TV or any display that you own.

        • That "4K screen" only works for less than a handful of apps, the rest of the time it's just a 1080p screen.

        • Samsung's screen is industry leading according a number of tech reviews.

I agree with the reviews after I have done my own personal comparison in carrier's stores.

In my view, Samsung's flagships have the best screen than any competitors.

        • Replied to the wrong person.

      • -2

Yeah but it has Samsung written on it.

      • -2

The 5X will take the S6 to the cleaners in the battrery life department. Only thing I'd pick the Samsung for is the 3GB RAM.

        • +4

          Samsung Galaxy S6: 7 hours 14 minutes
          Google Nexus 5X: 6 hours 25 minutes

I gave the 5X the benefit of the doubt because of Marshmallow and Doze, but you should really not talk if you don't know what you're talking about.

        • +1

Which touchwiz is known to not have good memory management to take advantage of the 3gb and will kill background tasks straight away so when you switch back they reload anyhow.

        • I am speaking from personal experience.

      • Also nexus has stock android, even with the better machinery in the s6, the nexus has far less bugs and runs a lot faster. Google make android for the nexus phones, Samsung butcher android as they are not a software company for their phones.

        • You say that, but Lolipop was a hot mess when it first came out for the Nexus. How is it that it takes all the way until Android M for stock android to get proper volume controls instead of being a broken piece of crap on stock android Lolipop? Also where's multitasking or multiwindow on stock android on the 6P or the Google Pixel C to take advantage of the real estate.

Again, you seriously don't know what you're talking about. Both stock android and skins of android have bugs and different features.

        • @smileymiwo:
I agree lollipop had some problems at release, still better than the s5's version of touchwiz though in comparision.
I'd say current lollipop and marshmellow are better than the s6's touchwiz and all its issues.

      • Touch wiz might be cleaner in the S6 but previous benchmarks have put touchwiz on lollipop up to 34% slower on equivalent hardware.

It's still not going to be as smooth, the more powerful hardware and higher resolution screen just serve to drain it's battery faster.

I have an S4 and going to cyanogen mod stock android has doubled its lifespan.

Also very disappointed in S6 canning the SD card. Apparently S7 should get it back.

        • -2

To touch on the last point, Nexus phones have never had SD card expansion. Strictly speaking, Nexus 5X vs S6, you can't even BUY a Nexus 5 at anything more than 32gb. The fact that this base model at $523 is the 16gigs varient is a joke.

        • -1

          @smileymiwo:

Yeah look I agree the fact that Google think they can sell a premium phone for 7-800 with 16-32gigs non expandable is a joke. But they want us to use cloud I guess.

Sucks how they abandoned their affordable Nexus 4/5 strategy

Personally I'm skipping this generation of snapdragon. 820 couldn't come sooner enough. Hopefully they don't suffer from heat throttling etc like the 810

        • @G Wok:

Interesting how people on this site follow themes like stupid sheep.

"TouchWiz is bloated" but somehow people love the LG G3 and G4 whose skin of Android this year is probably so bad it's even worse than any rendition of touchwiz ever.

"Not buying the S6/Note 5 because no expandable storage" yet people don't seem to give a shit that the Nexus phones have had neither for the past 5 years?

Apprently we're meant to bend over backward and suck stock Android's chode and pay huge amounts of dollars for not much.

If you guys want a phone that's better than this one AND cheaper, go get a OnePlus X. Better screen, slightly older processor, more RAM, expandable storage, comparable camera and Oxygen OS is stock android with a bunch of very very useful features as well as far better build quality. And only 200~250 USD.

        • @smileymiwo:

I prefer LG skin to Touchwiz. Though I believe TW was improved on 5.1.1. My LG runs smoothly and when I switch between apps its instance with no reloading. On my Note 4 everytime I'd go to switch apps it would lag. Go to gallery app was the worse. So I'm more of a fan of LG than Samsung, but that is just my experience. It was similar experience with my tab s. I was really blown away by how good the performance of the G4 is, I was expecting it to be as bad as my Note 4.

        • -1

          @smileymiwo:

Speak for yourself Samsung fanboy, I ain't no sheep.

I've tried both and touchwiz is horrendous. I never said LG G3/4's UI is any better, in my opinion, It's just as bad as you said.

Lack of expandable storage is a distinct limitation as I've mentioned, can you read?

Touchwiz also takes up a significantly larger amount of storage space compared to stock.

Admittedly, touchwiz has improved and is less crap, and with high end specs it runs better. But it is still not stutter free. Which is ridiculous, because iOS has been lag free for ages. Call it how it is.

But this doesn't bother everyone and these phones would be fine for most people.

The S6 exynos is superior to the current snapdragon generation though, better camera and better screen. But touchwiz still sucks.

        • @G Wok:

Well I get lag on my iPad air 2 on iOS 9. Can't speak for the new A9 chip, it probably runs lag free on that.

        • @G Wok:

Not calling you sheep, calling people like RI4V4N above.

        • 34%?

That's quite a precise figure. How did you come to this?

        • -2

          @smileymiwo:

I'm sorry am I meant to take your made up figures seriously? People who buy lg g4's etc also don't know better, but can all flash to stock or cyanogen, unlike the horrible mess of the galaxy s6.

        • @G Wok: From your link:

As you can see for yourself, while there are some exceptions in which the Note 4's TouchWiz software is up to snuff and rivals the performance of stock Android on the Nexus 6, the overall scores match our more subjective impressions during the test. Namely, all is well with TouchWiz when talking lighter operations, but when relatively heavier apps such as the Gallery and the built-in browser are involved, the image sometimes gets choppy and less fluid than on the Nexus 6.

We'll admit that walking in, we were expecting to finally have proof of just how much TouchWiz needs a de-bloating session. However, throughout all the testing (which took more hours to complete than you'd care to know), we were consistently surprised to see that Samsung's software isn't quite as bad as some members of the community were painting it, especially considering all that's packed in it.

Interestingly enough, the company is rumored to be working on slimming down TouchWiz with the Galaxy S6, which could push its highly controversial launcher into the hearts of more people.

So … it's only the gallery and browser that are less fluid?

Nice how you cherry-picked the 34% figure from the review of a phone from 2014.

        • @eug:

Also to add, they vastly improved the Gallery app on the S6 and Note 5, and just use Chrome instead of the browser.

        • @RI4V4N:

          Sure.

        • @G Wok:

I'm not defending Samsung, but you do know that that test was using an old iteration of TouchWiz, right?

You know, old TouchWiz is generally considered 'bad / laggy', while the newer one (not 'bad') is tainted with that bad legacy?

Your basing your negative view of Touchwiz, on an old 'bad' version of Touchwiz.

        • -1

          @inose:

Yeah look I acknowledge that was probably one of the worst versions which I had the pleasure of using for a year until the warranty expired.

Also, there are multiple things in the table on that article that are less fluid.

Currently, there are no benchmarks of the S6 Nature UX version of Touchwiz. But from anecdotal experience of borrowing an S6 for a while, as well as from multiple friends, it remains not as fluid. Definitely less so, but certainly still not stutter free. It's a pity that such good hardware is IMO brought down by software, when a google play edition would suffice for users who care about this stuff. Many people I know who use S6 don't notice/care about it, and I did mention that my previous post.

I guess there is scope to benchmark these two platforms again. It may not be as bad, but it still won't be equal.

Let's see what happens with the S7, shall we?

        • @G Wok:

In that case, maybe you'd like to correct or clarify your previous statements, rather than lead others to believe something based on your (unconfirmed) anecdote.

          http://www.phonearena.com/news/Living-with-the-Samsung-Galax…

…the Galaxy S6 flies, whereas its predecessors — even the Galaxy Note 4 — were crawling in comparison. This is the first time in years that I'm truly impressed with a Samsung device, and that's saying quite a bit…

So basically, unless you're being anal about lag, or you still have that "Touchwiz is lag" idea ingrained, you won't notice lag. (This is my unformed anecdote, and I have a Nexus 5 as a benchmark.)

        • @inose:
I actually had an s6 for a few months (I like to try new phones), its not the lagginess of touchwiz thats the problem now, its just the bugs and stalls and other things wrong with it. Samsung is not a software company, android is not made by them, it just ends up being worse than pure droid or cyanogen on the nexus or motorolla lines, however, the s5 was still ok because you could run cyanogen. With the s6 you do not have that option.

        • @inose:

Lag, stutter, bugs, memory management, slow updates.

Minor to be sure, but it's still not as clean. Better, but not for everyone. If you've used stock nexus, I'm sure you would appreciate that.

Would be great if they brought back the google play edition. Unlikely though.

        • @G Wok:

Would be great if they brought back the google play edition.

          What a dream!

Fingers crossed for Cyanogenmod… which I am sure will be supported soon (even with the Exynos chip, since my Galaxy Tab S recently got support :D)

      • I haven't seen a more controversial post on OZBargain, congratulations!

You have as much haters, as non-haters! (Currently more non-haters)

    • +2

I am waiting for a S6. I am a NExus 5 user at the moment.

I just think the S6 is better than a Nexus.

      • No it's not stock Android, but why get it? It's bare-bones Android (feels empty). Also, TouchWiz has 'cleaned up its act' with its superfluous functions (like in the s3 days), and nowadays it's very snappy / does not feel like a skin. It's got very good performance, while having awesome features that I use (multi window, side-sync).

      • S6 is undenibly the sexiest phones around!

      • Yes, the S6 has a much better screen, leading CPU and camera etc… but I don't think these really matters to the general consumer.

      • Regarding Android updates, yes, Nexus get them first. But we can (wait for?) something very close to it - Cyanogenmod ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Would I get another Nexus phone in the future? YES, I am a happy Nexus 5 owner!! But as mentioned before, the Nexus nowadays is too expensive for what they offer, I just don't think they are good value. They are expensive for what they offer (basically bare-boned Android (stock)) in my opinion, when you can get (pretty much) the same software for free. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • S6 is undeniably the sexiest phones around!

        well i'm denying it lol
i prefer the design of the 5X to the S6 tbh

        • +1

Surprising, but each to their own :)

        • I'm waiting for next gen phones, the only phone I'd consider at the moment is the V10, and only if it came down to under $500 today(which won't happen).

      • -1

S6 isnt getting cyanogen mod. The new hardware includes some really weird differences from other phones that has put modders off. It also just cause a lot of bugs and slipups with android in general.

This isnt a widely reported issue because most people who buy Samsung phones are thr kind of people who have only ever owned Samsung or apple phones and have never experienced the difference.

If you have a nexus 5 or s5 I would keep it over the s6.

        • I wouldn't rule it out.

My Galxy Tab S 10.5 has recently been adopted by Cyanogenmod :D …Even though I've no issues even with this older TouchWiz, it's nice to know.

This may be the same case for the S6; it's one of the most popular phones around, and so I would expect it to get cyanogenmod support sometime soon :)

        • -1

          @inose:
From what I understand its the exynos chips and architecture causing problems. Think everyone has given up with ports. Otherwise it would be out by now already because as you say its a very popular phone.

        • @RI4V4N:

My Galaxy Tab S 10.5… has an Exynos chip, and it's being supported :D

There's more than enough <3 for the S6, so there is much hope!

        • @inose:
It actually isnt supported, at best there is a buggy unofficial version that barely runs after over 1 and a half years, its the same issue with the s6.

        • @inose:
Well maybe there is hope yet, from the forums I read about the galaxy s6 though, not a lot of progress is being made.
Noting its a bit worrying its taken a year and a half when these things are usually on a 2 year update/release timeframe.

    • S6 if you value display, battery life, camera, performance, less heat, build quality and extra features.

5X if you value a better fingerprint scanner, faster Android updates and a much bigger XDA community for ROMS, mods, kernels and the likes.

The fact that you're asking though, I'd say definitely go with the S6. As long as it doesn't cost much more, it kind of kicks the 5X's ass in most areas.

      • -1

If you actually used and s6 and then a 5x, you would not say the performance is better. Yes, the processor and etc in the samsung are better, but its the disconnect with the software that causes it a lot of bugs and slowdown. I agree with the other points though.

        • I don't even know why I wrote performance, I know for a fact the 5X is a lot faster in daily usage. I guess I was just thinking SoC performance. My bad :P

  • Sorry, which voucher is being talked about, especially in relation to the Nexus 5X? I did a quick search and can't find a reference to "Harvey Norman Voucher", so if someone could point me in the right direction (or give me the code) then many thanks!

  • Why don't they stocked the LG 5x Ice ….. I don't wanna pay the premium from Google Store.

    • You can buy it outright from Telstra for $480 if you sign a 12 month contract.

      • +2

Isn't that the opposite of outright? Might be able to squeeze a better deal if getting a plan.

  • +3

I'm sure the Flex has a nice looking screen but ~$400 for a two year old phone?

  • I was tempted to get the G Flex. But a bit baffled now after doing some research.
Its a 2013 model phone, with not so decent screen resolution (720p, ~245 ppi) and no sdcard slot.

The Flex 2 (released 2015) looks better, has better resolution (1080p, ~403 ppi), microSD slot, better camera and latest OS.
And I can get one (probably grey import) for ~400AUD delivered from here

    Confused

    • +5

I Would stay away from that site, dodgy as

    • You know, 245ppi is still very good!

      • I wouldn't say very good. Maybe acceptable.

        • OK. Not 'very good', but still good enough for most people. Because it's pretty good!

No one complained about pixelation on the Galaxy S3 lol. Nor the Nexus 4. Both had terrific reviews, no arguments with their displays. Still applies today.

    • +1

I bought the G Flex 2 unlocked (make sure you get the 3gb RAM H950 version exclusive to AT&T, not the 2gb Hong Kong versions) and it is amazing - love this phone. Got it for around $389 delivered from here http://www.ebay.com/itm/171838677560?lgeo=1&rmvSB=true#shpCn… a few months ago. Pair it with the genuine LG Window cover (really slim as it replaces the back cover rather than clipping over) and it is an awesome phone (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-OEM-Smart-Quick-Circle-Windo…). Whacked in a 128gb micro sim and it takes great photos and videos for a phone too.

      • My friend's dad has had major issues with overheating. He's an average user, so knows nothing about the Snapdragon 810, so it isn't in his head.

After a few minutes of use, the phone gets BURNING hot and the screen turns white. It requires a few minutes of cooldown before it's operational again.

        You've had anything like this?

        • +1

Nope not a thing…use it heaps with kids on games and videoing etc never even felt it warm :)

        • @DrBrazen: Oh well that's good, must be a problem with his unit.

    • You know there's advantages that come with the G Flex that other phones don't have. The battery like is phenomenal, and performance will beat most current gen phones because of the low res screen.

      • The screen also has some major issues though.

    • Website-name-with-dash very dodgy

  • No stock for small items near me then delivery is $14.95 PER ITEM :/

Edit: Non sale items are capped at $5.95

  • Still waiting on S5. Harvey called saying 2nd week of Jan.
    Thinking of cancelling my order.

  • is the nexus 32gb good value? im looking for a good spec phone as i lost my Z3 in aus and currently on a low budget phone.
the comments from the UK version of this site state its a little pricey and the G4 is comparatively the better option …
    http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/nexus-5x-32gb-sim-free-black…

whats the best 5.2" or under phone for $600 bucks at the mo? the 5x/s6? anyone recommend the 5x? hopefully the HTC m10 will be out soon..

    • +2

I'd recommend the 6p if u want a phone that big. I don't usually see them for that cheap. Otherwise the nexus 5x for sure, after that maybe a moto x play? The play doesn't have the same quality screen or processor as the others but runs pretty much plain droid (it just has a few moto apps), has a huge battery, decent camera and has a SD card slot.

Currently I wouldn't buy any phone that isnt either a nexus or the new gen of Motorola's. The only reason I wouldn't buy a one plus or etc, is they are missing critical 4g signal bands for large portions of Australia.

    • As a Nexus 5X user, I highly recommend to get 5X especially at this price point.

    • LG G4 >>> N 5X imho

16gb simply is not enough memory dont forget the OS will use up some of that.

    • +1

Again depends on what you need.

I heavily rely on streaming and cloud, never carry any mp3 or movie files on my phone.

I don't download any large game either.

      16GB is enough for me.

      • Thats ok for some but is network dependent, always better to have a bit more memory in my opinion

  • My new Nexus 5x awaits me at the local store. Thanks OP
