    • Far out anyone would have to be thick to buy from Dick Smith online. In-store only or stay the f**k away.

  • +3

don't purchase online unless you're happy to throw money down the drain

    • Pay with PayPal or Credit Card & your funds will be protected.

      • true but you still have to stuff around to claim your money back

essentially the will take your cash, not give you your product and then YOU have to chase YOUR money

        • DS as a business is still trading, selling goods, as usual. There is no indication orders will not be sent out. PayPal disputes in this type of case should be straight forward.

  • So, what about warranty stuff? I guess just call the manufacturer if something goes bust?

I feel sorry for the staff. They opened up a new store here only a few months ago. We have 2 DS stores now, so that's a lot of staff on the streets again :(

    • +1

For reputable branded products you would be ok, but for the DSE branded and other no name products I would say that your goose is cooked.

      • +1

Warranty, especially extended warranty may be underwritten by a different business or insurance company. That's common practice, but may not be the case with Dick.

Also the DS business will be offered for sale, so DS product warranties may be covered… we will see.

        • Will be interesting to see if they get any interest in the sale? It is virtually an empty shell they are selling with a lot of debt and a long established business name that has been well and truly soiled under the current ownership.
Could the present owner have planned for this outcome? Is there any way he could have profited from it? I realise the finance provider and the shareholders have been stung hard but how will Nick Abboud come out of this?

  • DS recent issues from businessinsider

The company then opened up for what was essentially a fire sale, offering some private-label products for a discount of up to 97.5%. While the sale was meant to drive strong sales across the Christmas period, stores had a serious lack of inventory. This pushed customers away even more, with no viable options to replenish stock due to Dick Smith not wanting to take on more debt.

If that wasn’t bad enough enough for the struggling retailer, suppliers in recent weeks have allegedly become worried about getting paid and some have even begun demanding cash on delivery.

That's very bad for a business - sacrifice stock to raise funds, to buy new stock, but not raise enough money, and so not have enough stock for peak sales period when business makes its main profits for year!

    • +1

You got it all wrong, this isn't bad business move, this is a heist. This probably planned long ago. The fire sale was their last heist to empty out the coffer before the company goes under.

      • You got it all wrong,

The two views are not incompatible as you think ;-)
It's only the intent of management that differs. We don't actually know what was discussed at DS boardroom, so your 'theory' is simply that. We do know what the outcome so far is, as I outlined. Going beyond that without proof, is mere speculation & gossip.

        Time will tell.

      • -1

A heist by who? Management? The PE firm has already exited.

  • -3

1000+ (-) votes should inspire them to file bankruptcy which will force them to sell all their stocks instore at least 50% less RRP. Yey! :)

  • +1

Spare a thought for all the employees and suppliers. Management of the online section was, unfortunately for those caught up in the mess, clueless.

    • +2

Few ds store staff were either pleasant, professional or honest.

For years ds management has allowed staff to do what they want and directed that paid orders be withdrawn as unavailable even when stock has been in store.

I once placed a click and collect order in front of the store stock, got a confirmation after paying, and then received the following day an email from the store saying out of stock. Rang them up and was told the same. 2 weeks later the stock was back on the shelf at full price.

I have even had confirmation at another store to pick up and no goods unless I bought something in addition from that store.

Pointless trying to complain because there are no retail protections in Au, which is why I ship so much stuff from abroad.

Australain retailing is completely corrupt, no consumer protections under this government or any other in recent years.

DSE has only survived because of this look the other way and turnbull's crap about competition while putting into place bankruptcy protection makes plain his true position.

To the 10% decent staff bad luck, to the rest of the cheating lying staff who did take the majoriy of the deals for themselves and family and friends good luck killing your next employer be it jb, good guys or hn.

      • I've only met 1 DS staff member who was not reasonably professional - they were sacked after my complaint to head office. That was a manager years ago.

Staff I have met have been if anything far too friendly - remembering me, shouting hello when I enter their store. Always very helpful.

So your criticism may say more about your interactions or your area.

        • +1

'years ago' seems to be relevant here.

I note your attempt to blame me for online orders being cancelled without any personal contact whatsoever after payment being taken.

I assume therefore you are saying that it is ok for dick smith staff to routinely cancel and refuse to supply paid online orders because they don't like certain people.

          That is illegal.

Those ds staff are then legally neither professional or honest.

Mates rates comments will abound here

      • +1

Generalised waffle which does a great disservice to the majority of DSE staff. Their systems were poor - as anyone who has had online deliveries can attest, their upper "management" even worse.

        • Most issues with Dick do boil down to terrible stock & online systems. Staff always complained about them in my experience.

The sale by Woolies was expected to bring a needed change to those systems, but it still was bad. At the time of purchase, the mature online sales system was seen as the major asset, along with the huge discounted inventory. Many expected the closure of stores, but new stores have opened.

Management in head office failed DS. Hopefully the next owners (if anyone is brave or foolish to buy it) will overhaul it.

  • +2

i am very happy as i didn't buy a lot from them. i am also happy for sales staff as they very the rudest people i met in this country so they will learn a lesson

  • I dare say the staff maybe in viking mode. Rape and pillage before the company slowly sinks….

    • -1

They been doing that to customers for years..

  • Remember who bought TANDY

    • I remember when Dick Smith bounced on a pogo stick in Sydney shouting he was 'hopping mad' about a foreign electronics store entering (his) Australian market ;-)

  • I will hold on, maybe we will see a closing down sale from dick very soon …

  • Just went and used my gift card in store. Was quite difficult to find something actually worthwhile to buy given the crap that they have left. Staff were aware of the announcement but still trading as normal.

  • Arrrgghhh!

Got a $100 gift card for xmas, and have work meetings all day…hopefully can swing by on my way home and grab some eneloops or memory cards / sticks or something lol!

    • -1

DS may trade out of the current credit problem. But best to be safe.

I cashed in my DS cards when things started getting shaky, before the sales. Bought a $299 in store product with discount codes online using discounted cards costing $99. Sold for a profit on Gumtree to recover my cash. Trouble is there is so much DS gear on Gumtree now, it would be hard to get a decent price.

      • How things change fast. Unfortunately that option won't be available now, since the gift cards are worthless :-(

Selling a product was the only way to recover the full cash amount of my money easily from DS Gift Cards. The buyer was very happy getting such a good bargain.

    • +2

      You're out of luck

In a blow to customers, Ferrier Hodgson said it would not honour outstanding gift vouchers or refund deposits paid for goods.

      http://www.theage.com.au/business/retail/dick-smith-goes-int…

    • malvern store still accpeting GC till close of business today . call em and see if u can pay over phone

  • So go in store to buy and not online

    • +1

OP deal is for online only.
Instore purchase would not allow application of discount codes provided.

      • Thats the price to take the possible risk. When dealing with a business in receivership, your funds are not protected.

        • My point was that comment has no relevance with regards to deal.

If you buy instore, this entire thread is moot point.

AFAIK, there are no advertised bargains for instore purchase.

Those interested in getting rid of gift cards are another subject altogether.

        • IMHO this is no deal.
There is no guarantee that you will receive goods, neither any guarantee that they give you goods to collect.

Having to chase refund off third-party is too much hassle with regards to the potential money saved

        • -1

          @StevieRay:
Agreed. I had upvoted your comment on those grounds.

    • +1

Paying online with Credit Card or PayPal will protect those funds. Gift cards will be more risky useless.

  • Will keep an eye on the DS website but I'm quite wary of ordering online with them right now. I wonder when they'll start sales in store?

  • +1

Just seen this in the article on The Age

In a blow to customers, Ferrier Hodgson said it would not honour outstanding gift vouchers or refund deposits paid for goods.

    http://www.theage.com.au/business/retail/dick-smith-goes-int…

    • I was about to post the same thing from the Herald Sun

    • +1

Usual practice when a receiver is appointed

Get into a store quick - it may take a while for the gift card system to be disabled - knowing DS. Otherwise buy a nice frame for it :-(

      • +1

accepting gift cards at malvern store as system still accepted them.

  • As long as a sale price list gets posted here first as I can't see the staff going out of their way to put up discount labels in store.

  • -1

Thanks OP but sorry for negative vote.
I would not dare to order anything online until the dust settle with DSE. I would hunt bargains in store though.
I was lucky enough to have my eBay 15% off 's jbl flip 3 order cancelled by DSE and refunded through PayPal on yesterday morning.

  • Dick Smiths now in administration, so warranties wont be worth the paper they written on

    • Both for DS store brands & probably extended warranties. Best to check who is underwriting DS warranties, as they may still honour them.

Name brand products that carry manufacturers warranties will not be effected.

  • Placed an order online this morning for eneloop batteries and quick charger. Just got an sms its ready for pick up.

    • Run ;-)

It is likely their systems will run as good as before ;-(
Will take a while for administrators to change larger systems. But they can quickly close down gift card payments!

      • Im happy to take the risk. If not will lodge a dispute with paypal. :)

        • Its waiting in store - so should be fine.

  • -1

Trying to get a pricematch at Officeworks. "Sorry, we do not pricematch DSE, they are going burst."

    • +1

This is where its safe to use the word "bust" ;-)

    • +1

      The Dick Burst!

  • So can I still use my ds gift card? Do hey sell game cards?

    • +1

According to the Administrators, gift cards are no longer accepted

    • malvern store accepting them till close of business tioday

  • +1

Walked into DS Bourke St (Melb) store today.
Signs at each register state they are 'current not accepting gift cards', along with cheques and diners not being accepted anymore.
I feel for those who cashed in on the gift cards when they were on offer at times

    • Thanks (I think) for that unfortunate confirmation.

Hopefully, those who bought Gift Cards recently paid by Credit Card. Lodge a claim against your bank for that purchase. Best to track down your receipt, or ask the store for a copy of your receipt.
      Hope you are successful!

      • Maybe they are still accepting them online? Not sure

        • +2

No. Online site only takes Credit card and Paypal only. The use of giftcard is not an option!

        • Already confirmed - can't use.
At least you are protected with PayPal & Credit Card payment.

  • +4

WARNING WARNING! DO NOT GIVE A COMPANY IN ADMINISTRATION YOUR MONEY!

  • +1

If people have paid by gift card before they stopped accepting them…

The risk is the order may be cancelled. As that is far too common a practice with Dick in normal times ("out of stock", "pricing error", etc) - its now even riskier.

If the order is cancelled, usually a refund is paid as a gift card … which would be worthless :-(

    • the risk is they simply don't fulfil your order, and treat you as an 'unsecured creditor'….same as issuing a gift card I suppose

      • +1

PayPal or CC payment is protected if they cancel your order or don't send it, as usual.

Its just people with orders awaiting fulfillment, paid by gift card, may be out of pocket.

  • I warned people in the previous 70% off deals not to buy any extended warranties because it was likely something like this would happen soon.

    • Extended warranty should be covered by a third party, not DSE, so likely will be valid even if DSE shuts the door.

      • third party extended warranty could go burst too……..

it happened to me few years ago with product brought from MYER with extended warranty!

  • +1

In a blow to customers, Ferrier Hodgson said it would not honour outstanding gift vouchers or refund deposits paid for goods.

    • I posted this already

      • yeah, sorry, I didn't read page 2

    • +1

Probably should be added to OP - it's very important.

      • agreed…but I don't know how to edit the post

    • malvern still accepting gift cards. be quik

  • +4

I think businesses which are in administration should not be allowed to have posts on Ozbargain.

    • +1

What if there is a liquidation clearance?

      • If I can hand over money at the same time as receive the goods, maybe. If course there will be a warranty issue. But this deal is for buying online. Hand over money, hoping they will give you the goods.

  • +5

Its a pity poor OP is getting negatives. When the deal was posted DSE was trading normally and $10 off $49 spend is over a 20% discount and a reasonable deal ( I realise the exemptions ). Clearly events have overtaken the original post which the OP would have not been aware. Yes the deal is NOW poor not when posted

    • it's still a good deal though
basically DSE are offering 10-20% off your order (depending on how much you buy) but you've got to go and pick it up yourself

I don't see any problems with this, other than that DSE aren't accepting gift cards (which this isn't, it's a discount code)

  • My friend managed to use his gift cards at Sydney Central Plaza DS (Myer Food court)

Burwood (Sydney) DS Westfield won't accept DS gift cards.

    Good luck!

malvern dick smith was still accepting gift cards at 330pm as they said the computer system still accepts them and it was the managers decision - good on him.
bnrighton and southland stores not accepting gift cards.
southland store was looking bare in many sections.
be quik if u want to redeem at malvern

    • I feel sorry for people who might have gone back to work today and didn't have the chance to use their gift cards. They might be worthless now.

      • On Tv it was advised that the Liquidator will not be honouring gift cards, and that people should immediately do charge backs to their credit cards.

  • +1

Probably why the ebay sale was terminated early. Ebay would have been liable for refunds on non delivery of DSE items.

  • Mega10 working for anyone?

    • Try MEGARISK

I know their eBay store is out of action. Maybe the same with their online store too.

      • Not much risk in trying to get a Chromecast for $39 via Paypal and click and collect is there?

        • +1

Fairly standard price for a common product. Might as well get it elsewhere even if it costs a little bit more. Bing Lee have it for $45, but you can always pricematch at Officeworks.

        • +2

Not sure. I had a quick look inside the Fountain Gate store today, which is one of their large stores, and their chromecast display was empty.

If you are not in a hurry to buy then Harvey Norman have these for $38 from time to time.

        • @unity1:

There were heaps of Chromecasts at Camberwell this morning. Also accepted my gift card this morning.

        • @unity1: They had them for $38 just recently. Ended Sunday.

  • Your order will never get processed.

    • Read comments - orders are being processed. eg

  • My comment just got an "Inappropriate use of a negative vote"….wow. Who is defending DSE??!
