Masters - Charcoal Grill Deluxe BBQ $150 (Save $31)

560

Hey guys and gals, current masters catalogue in victoria has this for $150. Great price, i purchased this several weeks prior to xmas for $162- and the normal selling price at masters is $181. Fantastic charcoal bbq and for 150, its a bargain. Great to cater for family and friends. Having previously owned a weber kettle, this is a brilliant unit and gives you the ability to raise and lower the coals during the cooking process.

I bought one for Father's day last year. My dad raves about it. So I got myself one too. They're great, pair it with masters 10% off if you can.

Only warning they take between 2-3 hours to fully assemble, and my 2nd one only had Fahrenheit on the thermometer.

    • can you provide a photo of the inside?

  • I have one of this, great bbq, easy to empty/clean charcoal. I modified it, installed the spit roast machine. Super useful with the adjustable height. When you cut the meat for the spit, just wind it down so it wont burn you, same goes for warming the food.

    • +6

Can you share some pics of how you modified it? sounds interesting.

      • +4

I am in the process getting it patented. But just for you, when I get home, I will take a few photos!

        • +5

Here it is, pending patent no.3569.

Sorry about the mess, Gordon Ramsay came to my house in the new year to check out my spit, still haven't got a chance to clean it.

          • My advice is, when you mount the brackets, try to find the adjustable bracket or something slightly higher than mine, the reason for that is you can do bbq and spit at the same time. As is, i can only do 1 side spit and 1 side bbq.
  • silly question is this a smoker?

    • +15

      Social.

    • +2

If you're thinking American style ribs/brisket, you're probably looking for a purpose built offset smoker like this: http://bit.ly/1Rb1lQR

This is not one of those. However almost any charcoal barbecue, including this one, can be adapted for slow smoking.

      • +2

You don't need an offset smoker to smoke meat. You can easily do it in this unit by dropping the charcoals and closing the lid.

    • +2

It's not a texas-style smoker as Simulacrum points out, but you could definitely use this to do some smoking. I use an old fashioned kettle bbq to achieve the same type of result.

  • how tall is this thing? the site only has length and width.

    • +1

      It's approx 105cm

      • thanks mate

  • +1

Take another $3.62 off through cashrewards (2% at masters)

  • For anyone who's bought one… how big is the box? Will it fit into the back seat of an average Falcodore sedan?

    • +1

i will hazard a guess it will fit. The box isnt too big.. Picked it up in the missus rolla and it fitted no worries.

    • You should be alright! I could fit it into a Mazda 3 back seat.

  • These are amazing, have had one since they were $99 around a year+ ago. Not quite as cheap as then, but still a bargain. Needs a fair bit of assembly but well worth the effort. Missus won't let me use the gas BBQ ever again

    • +1

Lol.where was the ozbargain post, thats a sensational price.. Same here, gas bbq is slowly being made redundant..mainly just using the wok burner on the bbq now.

      • It was on their catalogue, and all 2 shops in WA at the time only had 1-2 in stock… Felt more like bait

  • +2

Got my 5 burner for free on Gumtree

  • wonder if this will be around in a few days for the upcoming 10% off special

  • If you wait till 11th you get another 10% off if you click and collect?

  • Already have 5 bbqs..
Wish I had room for another :P

  • Does it have a cover to avoid rust ?

    • No

  • How big is the cooking area?

    • 50 cm x 35cm

      • Thanks

  • +2

I have one of these. Nice bbq, the charcoal tray does get rusty pretty easily though, probably because I am a noob and don't know how to properly clean a bbq. It has a nice build (although very hard to construct - IKEA construction on drugs). Has a bottle opener, hooks for utensils and has a charcoal tray that is able to be lifted higher or lower to adjust heat.

PROS - nice build, huge cooking area, double shelf grill, adjustable charcoal tray, hooks for utensils, side table to store food, lots of area to store things.
CONS - Hard to clean, Hard to construct

  • Everything as said above. Great bbq. Friends and family liked it so I'll be passing this onto them in case.

  • Awesome. been eyeing this. Time to upgrade from my kettle. Thanks OP.

  • Does the catalogue show an end date for this special?

    • +2

quick search shows Wed 13th Jan

      • +1

Thanks! So it looks like if you wait until the 11th you can get an extra 10% off!

        …..if they still have stock…..

        • +1

I wasn't prepared to take that risk… extra 5% first purchase clinched it

        • Always the million dollar question..do you wait or just buy now. Saying that though, my local masters prior to xmas when i purchased it had several pallet worth of bbq.. Might be worth ringing and asking your local masters.. Or just bite the bullet and have it now for the weekend.

        • @trippyfoo: Looked like Burnside Masters had ~20 in stock today.

  • Off topic question, has anyone ever attempted to modify one of these to be a gas started charcoal BBQ? Would that be possible or even legal?

Yes, I'm very aware that I'm super lazy :D

    • +4

you my friend need a LOOFTLIGHTER.. look it up

    • The everdure echurrasco is dual gas/charcoal. Have been tempted by it, but accessories are a must have and they're all quite expensive.

    • +2

I reckon it'd be pretty easy. Though to be honest using a chimney starter is even easier than the looftlighter people below are recommending. I used to use a looftlighter.. now i set a chimney full of coals over a couple of fire starters and by the time i've finished my beer its good to go.

again off topic.. anyone have an attachable fan for bbq to blow smoke away..

http://www.thegrillstore.com/maverick-grill-fan-cordless.htm… - but they are in america

    • i use this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Outdoor-portable-rechargeable-bat…

saw they were quite popular in HK in summer (people using them on the street, waiting for bus)..
i bought one, but use it to blow away smoke, as well as additional help getting the charcoals ready..

requires a 18650 Lithium-ion battery (which is recharged whilst inside unit via micro usb cable)

  • How powerful is it? Does it blow away a decent amount of smoke?
When using a charcoal bbq and the putting fatty sausages on there, it creates heaps of smoke which you can barely see through

  • Plenty of stock at Williams Landing store. Got mine this evening.

  • Has anyone received a thermometer that is in Celcius? Mine is Farenheit and I read somewhere (aussiebbq?) that someone else had gotten a second unit that didn't have Celcius.

    • Picked one up this morning… They had 2 on display.. One appeared to be the new model with Fahrenheit and Celsius, and had enamel coated grill…. The older was Fahrenheit only and had cast iron grills..

All the boxes available for purchase seemed to be new stock and listed the enamel coated grills on the box (haven't opened mine yet to confirm this though)

      • +2

after building it… i will reverse what I said

new stock appears to be Fahrenheit only and cast iron grills (despite the box mentioning cast iron enamel grills)

  • +2

btw.. anyone looking for reviews, this is the same bbq from walmart in the US
    http://www.walmart.com/ip/33603464

  • 10% off code from this deal doesn't seem to work online. Seems like a more general issue with the code rather than it not applying to this item.

  • Thanks op
Bought one and it is excellent
I got so many compliments about it
i accidentally threw the box that contained the wheels so I went to bunnings and bought a pair.
Lovely bbq and we'll worth the money.

  • Just bought one with the 10% discount. Looking forward to fire it up this weekend.

    • Nice work.. Thats a great price. The ozbargainer in me was like..i knew i should've waited..lol..nah.. Its a great little unit and for $135.. Even more of a bargain. Enjoy ..and happy that so many other people are enjoying the deliciousness.

  • +3

I waited and bought one today too, there are still at least 5 left at Bayswater WA.

Also, the extra 10% off ($15) I took down to Coles, who currently have their 'Redheads' range of bbq stuff on special for 30% off. PLUS, there is currently a promo through Redheads.com.au for a free BBQ set if you buy their gas lighter, a box of charcoal and a pack of firelighters in one transaction. Those three items are exactly what you need to get this BBQ deal started, and for 30% off, and with a free BBQ tool pack on the way. Go Ozbargain!

  • Now we just need a deal on some great charcoal!

Lump/hardwood charcoal all the way guys.

  • anyone have any issues storing this outside under the weather conditions ?

  • no more stock NSW metro :)

  • Picked up mine today, the setup was mildi=ly frustrating but nto too bad, beats IKEA. I forgot to buy a chimney which makes getting things started a lot harder (ended up borrowing one). But after it got lit it's a really nice and simple bbq. The temperature control is fantastic and the whole thing is just a breeze to use.
    Would recommend

  • Lol. Nothing beats ikea.. Thankfully i have a friend who visualises it like the matrix. Back to the bbq, yup, very happy camper here as well.. Such a great little unit, even at its normal price of $181, i would pay it.. Well maybe..

  • how do you clean this bbq? it seems hard to empty the charcoal.

    • ive only used it a couple of times, but so far Ive found laying down some foil in the coal tray makes an easy way to collect it all up.
Ive also seen some images online of people using foil trays to hold the charcoal as another alternative

      • Thanks that's sounds like a good idea. Just wondering does the foil become so hot that it sticks to the coal tray?

        • nope

Aluminum melts at about 1220F/660C which should be considered the safe upper limit for your bread baking. Below that temperature, aluminum is relatively corrosion resistant and non-reactive due to a thin layer of aluminum oxide that forms on the surface of the solid metal."

I dont think any non-insulated charcoal grill would ever get those temps :)

        • @SBOB: thanks

    • I dunno if I'm doing it wrong but at the end of a cook the coals normally just disintegrate into ash.. I just push it them through the coal plate onto the tray below, then empty the tray below straight into the bin? I've used it 15+ times and have only done it once. It kinda soaks all the oils and fats from the stuff you cook anyways so it's not all bad having it there!

  • Has anyone found a decent cover for this to keep outside?

    • +1

Not yet. Im just waiting for the inevitable masters closing down sale. Aiming to buy another and just store it in my shed.

    • I bought one from masters for it. fits perfectly, does the job imo. i think it was 15 bucks? well worth it imo

  • Did anyone keep their manual by any chance (or remember which US firm sold a rebadged version)? I took out the silver roasting rack to clean and can't for the life of me get the bl**dy thing back in properly. It shouldn't be that hard to put the tray and it's strut back in, but it took me a good 15 mins of swearing before I gave up.

(H/t to Hamza23 for reopening an old thread too, let's use this opportunity to reminisce the days when Masters was still going out of business)

    • +1

Lol.. maybe.. will have a look tomorrow in the garage for it.. may still be floating around.

      • Thanks! Fingers crossed.
