This has always been the case… a questionable deal at best…

  • Do these qantas cards work with all those amex offers popping up on ozb?

    • +4

These cards work with all AMEX offers.

      • -3

How much do the cards cost?

        • The cards in this particular deal cost $0.

        • @KaptnKaos: Wow. So you're saying i can get the amex cashback deals for free? And it's been this way all along? Wow. Thanks!

        • @Putnum:

Yes and yes. Free. No catches.

    • Yes they do.
I have 2 in my household and I receive all those deals, the ones I don't, I sign up for using amex connect (those ozbargain deals) and enter my card number.

      • -3

Surely they don't work. That means you can get an amex card for free?

        • Do they work or not…I'm ready to pull the trigger.

        • +2

@nocure: I've got this card. They work.

And, if you don't have it offered to you, then most times, you can find a manual link on ozb.

Can I encourage you to use the referral links instead because you get more points? Win win for you and referrer.

Ps. Supplementary cards get different numbers, so you can sign up for the deal more than once if you have more than one card.

        • Yup. I've had mine for the last 5 years going on 6.

        • -3

@bluedufflecoat: how much have you paid for the card?

        • there are currently 4 fee free Amex card, direct from Amex

(therefore, not sure why people would complain about "but….but….but I don't have an AMEX!!!1!!!1!!!!"

        • @Putnum: no annual fees, so nothing?

        • -2

@FW190: IKR!! haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate hate though.

  • I have been thinking about getting one of those Qantas AmEx card, but they really limit where you earn Qantas points.

In most cases one will be earning 0.5-a point per dollar spent, and I already have Westpac Black card which gives me 0.625 on Mastercard purchases. AmEx is not accepted everywhere.

the only point is getting this card to earn sign up points and cancelling card after points received.

    • +4

      0.5-a point per dollar spent

Let's not spread untrue information here. The Discovery card's earn rate is 1 point = $1.

      • +1

that is correct, but another one which is in the link

earns 0.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent with providers of utilities, telecommunications, government services and other insurances

which is pretty pathetic taking into account that AmEx excepted everywhere.

In this aspect Disovery card beats $450p.a. Qantas American Express® Ultimate Card

    • There are better cards for points earning, but I keep this one since it has no annual fee.

      • You can maximise frequent flyer point earns paying low or no annual fees.
My aim (and achieved!) for Amex is:
        - 1.5pts per dollar for general use
        - 3pts for restaurant / grocery spends

You then need another card like Virgin money which is currently 1pt per $ for Visa spend

You CANNOT get all this from 1 card, you need a combination of cards and able to churn some cards before 12 months is up!
eg NAB Amex/Visa, Amex Velocity Platinum and Amex Platinium Edge

        Cheers

      • Any recommendations on better Qantas FFP earning credit cards ?

You can get additional bonus points if you use one of the referral links:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…

Plus you will help a fellow ozbargainer get bonus points too.

    • Additional 15,000 points for you and 10,000 for your referee.

      • Can you double them up? I got referred by a family member recently, thinking I would get the 7500 points for signing up plus the 15,000 from the referral bonus and so far I have only received 7500 for the referral plus 2 x 2500 points as an "acquisition bonus".

        • I suspect no. I clicked on a referral link, and the deal offered is 15,000 bonus points if you meet the spend criteria. If you clicked on this realm you get 7,500 points so the referral one doesn't apply.

Hence, going on referral would be more beneficial.

Looks like you already have 12,500 points, so if you spend on Qantas, you get the additional 2,500 taking it up to 15,000.

        • @bluedufflecoat:

          Right, gotcha. Thanks.

        • @bluedufflecoat: *offer not realm, Hah!

  • +1

Yea this 7500 points bonus is one of those always ongoing ones with a supposedly fixed expiry date which has continually been extended (for as long as I can remember - the last 2 years).

  • Can you get free postage on Amazon using Amex. What's the arrangement?
Someone said their FX cost kills it. Is there a plus with Amazon using Amex?

    • +2

There was a deal on free shipping for smallish items last year with Amex, but it's long gone.

  • Cheapest thing eligible for qantas spend?

    • Ummmm….

    • $9 price-matched Jetstar flight? (I'm not sure if it has to be /Qantas/, or if Jetstar is close enough)

  • Anyone simply looking for a fee free Amex card for a year, I highly recommend the Platinum Edge deal that has just been extended https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198715

Free for the first year and claim a domestic return flight straight away.
