Dual Core HD Media Player + HD Digital TV Tuner with Record Function Via USB $99 Shipped @ Strong.com.au

50

Just ordered one of these so can't vouch for quality. But it's a great price (almost 50% off) and includes free shipping. I've been searching for a TV Tuner/Media player in one device and this seems to represent great value. Customer Sales assure me there is no lag and these devices run pretty good.

  • Do people still use glorified set-top boxes anymore?

    • People with older TVS that are still rocking it.

    • Do people still use glorified set-top boxes anymore?

Yes, because most of them are also PVRs. On the rare occasions when there are multiple programs I want to watch, all on at the same time, I watch one and use the STBs to record the others.

I also have two old CRT-based TVs in bedrooms, they have lasted much longer than I expected, and they need STBs.

      I bought my STBs for $20-$30 though, I wouldn't spend $100.

This device is more like an Apple TV, or a media player. If you are in the market for one of those, this box may be a contender.

U can get these type of thing for under $50

    • +1

Example of comparable product for said amount?

This one's better for about the same price: http://www.tinydeal.com/xiaomi-tv-box-3-andriod-50-4k-amlogi…

What's the shipping and warranty like from Strong? Does it ship locally or drop ship from HK or Shenzen or the like?

        • +1

Key thing missing is TV Tuner.

        • @escimojoe:
          Huh. How'd I miss that?

It does look better now, although for a much narrower group of people.

I got one from coles or big w or something a few years ago, was HD and had usb recording. So if you need an example, start your hunt in one of thise two places - probably big w would be your best bet

    • We're still waiting for your alternative product.

      • -3

Well you should find something better to do then, than wait for a random person on the internet to post a product that you arent going to buy

  • HEVC support? Nice it has a HD Tuner built in. Would be even nice if you could have added a HDD internally as opposed to USB.

  • I've been happy with my Strong double tuner, but the "^ US VPN is required, subscription charges may apply" footnote to the claim of Hulu and netflix following the comment from netflix this morning that they will be blocking VPNs makes it look like a quick dump.

    http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/15/netflix-to-stop…

Still, a nice solution for older TVs - comparing it to cheaper Android sticks isn't really fair given that it is primarily a "smart" tuner, just don't expect many updates for the jelly-bean.

  • Does Android even support 24fps yet?

Nexus player/Shield and Kodi does perfectly

      • About time. :p
I know it was an issue a little while ago.

  • "US VPN is required, subscription charges may apply"

If I don't have that, what won't work?

    • Email response i received the other day:

A VPN is not required since Netflix has launched in Australia, you can still use a SmartDNS service such as Getflix to obtain US content through it however as the catalogue is different to the Australian one and we suggest looking at the Getflix website for more information on that. The application runs fine without any lag, any buffering would be a result of a bad internet connection.

Careful of the TV tuner. Is it DVB-T2?
I have just had to replace my 2 Hauppauge tuners because they are only DVB-T and will not pick up the new 9HD.
I expect more TV stations will go this compression type soon so we can have more gambling and shopping channels.

    • The new channels are native mp4 right? Thats gonna be a space saver.

    • Useful info thanks. Probably won't be able retune my window media centre… The tuner card is pretty old.

  • Can this thing be used as a windows media centre extender? I'm currently using an xbox360, but I'm getting a bit sick how much noise it produces.
