$0 annual fee in the first year for existing Westpac customers who apply via westpac.com.au and click on the Westpac customers 'Apply now’ button. New cards only. Offer ends 29 February 2016. See 'Things you should know' section below for this promotion's terms and conditions.

    • wait so new customer didnt get this $0 fee?

      • New customers need to pay $150.

        • +4

Drop into wbc to open a new acct before applying online.

        • +1

          @googleyahoo69: Even better…

*Existing Westpac, St George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA customers currently holding a credit card or have closed a credit card within the previous twelve months from card activation are not eligible for this offer

    • +5

So let me get this straight. Existing Westpac customers don't have to pay annual fee but are not eligible for the deal if they have had a Westpac, St George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA credit card?

Do St George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA customers have to pay the annual fee?

      • +2

Yeah, that's what I read.. WTF.. would make this deal USELESS to existing customers who have had a credit card cos they don't get the points anyways.

  • Free for the first year & Min. spend $1,000 on eligible purchases within 90 days is Very good. But a transaction account is probably going to cost $5 per month so that you can become an 'existing customer'

    • -1

But can get 'Westpac 55+ and Retired' fee free a/c

      • +6

But only if you're 55+ and retired :((

        • True, and that info was for those people!

    • You don't have to open an Everyday Account. Savings accounts have no fees. Also if you deposit $2,000+ in the month, the $5 fee gets waived with the Everyday Account

      • Looks like there's 2 Savings accounts options, only one of which does not require it to be linked to the Westpac transaction account. This is the Westpac Reward Saver and it has no monthly fee.

However, it appears they charge $2.50 for all methods of money withdrawal - online, telephone, EFTPOS, ATM, branch:

        http://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/bank-accounts/sav…

It has been a long time since I've seen a bank account charge for online withdrawals!

Maybe open this account and only put in $0.01?

  • +3

The T&C's would make a large chunk of OzB'ers unavailable. Currently hold, or have cancelled a CC within the last 12 months.

"Free" 40k QFF points are good tho…

  • +3

Not as good as the ANZ FF Black offer here 13/01 …. which is still open. Might appeal to those who find the $1000 spend condition more achievable than the $2500 on the ANZ card .. but for way less points AND the ANZ card is free in the first year to all (unless you've had an ANZ FF card in the last twelve months) .. :-) .. !!

    • +3

or for those who already have an ANZ card. Which if your interested in this deal, would be the vast majority.

    • Or for those whose income is below $75,000pa.

      • +1

But you don't need $75k to apply for an ANZ card…you can still get the Platinum (50k Qantas points) and $0 first year annual fee.

        • +1

I was just commenting on the enthusiasm for the Black card, which does have the high income requirement. :)

        • +1

          @bloomer:

Since when did 75k become high income on the interwebzzz

    • the ANZ points are totally worth it. $320 in cashback if you spend the minimum.

  • So as a non Westpac customer can I just set up an 'everyday savings account' or something similar and then just apply for the credit card online?

  • +7

Existing Westpac, St George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA customers currently holding a credit card or have closed a credit card within the previous twelve months from card activation are not eligible for this offer

    :(

  • +2

Minimum income requirement of $30,000 makes this a very good offer - better than the about-to-expire Jetstar offer which has the same income minimum but requires a spend of $3,000 in 60 days.

The downside: $150 annual fee for non-Westpac applicants, and rather high foreign transaction charges (but we all use 28degrees for that, right? :P ).

  • Is the $150 included in the minimum spend amount of $1000?

    • +2

      I doubt it

      • +2

        Agreed. It's a fee, not a purchase.

    • Thanks. Not sure why a genuine question needed a neg vote. Maybe someone doesn't like questions…

  • no more for me again with Westpac, their system is not consistent. I got bad experience about last deal
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/222385. I need to make so many phone calls and went to the branch to sort this out. Until now, I still haven't received my 1st $50 rebate. I requested to change my electronic statement to paper statement in the branch. They say they can't do it and asked me to ring IT department for help.

    • +4

The IT department is just going to ask if you've tried closing your account and reopening it again.

  • I don't receive a salary, so can someone please answer a few questions for me about credit cards.

Are the purchase of gift cards considered an eligible purchase? I plan on purchasing $1000 worth of gift cards.
If there's an annual fee on the credit card, how many award points do I need to pay that annual fee. I think this card has an annual fee of $150.
I get paid once or twice a year from grants and after I complete contracts, so how will they check if I'm eligible? I have no active loans or credit cards.

    • Are the purchase of gift cards considered an eligible purchase?

Probably not. The rules vary from lender to lender, and they're deliberately vague, but transactions involving the purchase of cash or 'cash-like' instruments are often not 'eligible purchases'.

If there's an annual fee on the credit card, how many award points do I need to pay that annual fee.

You don't. The fee will be charged in money, not points. They want cold hard cash!

I get paid once or twice a year from grants and after I complete contracts, so how will they check if I'm eligible?

They probably won't check. They'll do a quick automated scan of your credit history and they'll ask you about your monthly income, expenses, etc. Just fill all of those in with pro-rata numbers that reflect your true income. They'll want proof if you're borrowing half a million bucks, but they won't if you're borrowing a few thousand.

    • Altitude does offer the ability to pay the fee via points. For the Platinum card, which has a $150 Fee, it's 30,000 points.

Not sure about eligible purchase, same goes if you opt for Qantas FF.

    • They do ask for evidence of income. Which you can email to them, or present at a branch. I suggest that you email evidence of history of income with an explanation.

  • Can I open a new savings account to be an existing customer and apply for this credit card to avoid the $150 fee?

    • -2

Yes but you are Ineligible to get the points if you hold a W/P credit card anyways, see T&C's so why would u.

      • But I don't hold a W/P credit card and the T&C's does not say anything about how old the savings account needs to be? Am I missing something?

        • Then you should be ok I guess.. ask them just in case

  • +1

Existing customer is classified who holds the account over 6 months as per conservation with WBC in last deal.

    • +4

I've just had an online chat with westpac and they have confirmed that you can apply for any account now and can be eligible for the credit card as an existing employee. There is nothing in their terms and conditions which defines existing customers.

      • +1

Here's hoping we get on their payroll system as an existing employee!

  • Ok, as a Westpac savings account holder who does not have a CC it looks like I might actually be eligible for this.

    Couple of questions:

    • I have 28K in savings, is that close enough to the 30K mark to be approved?
    • Is the $1000 thing just spend that much on anything using the CC?
    • Any link to what 40 000 rewards points will actually get me?
    • Can I just cancel this card after a year so I don't need to pay any fees?
    • +2

      In your order:
Income, not savings, must have evidence of annual income >$30K
Yes but excludes cash and quasi-cash
Value is approximately $250 if used to fly, but depends on what you use the points for and how you do it.
      Yes, like almost everyone else .. :-) .. !!

    • +3
      1. You need to earn $30k a year, not have a minimum of $30,000 saved in a savings account.

      2. Yes, $1000 spend on anything

      3. No idea, check the rewards redemption page

      4. Yes, lots of people do this

      • Sweet. Sounds like I'll be getting my very first credit card!

    • +1

$43k points give you $250 gift-card (Woolies, big W, dan murphys)
I'd cancel it straight after getting the points, so the one year starts ticking again.

  • FML, I should have cancelled my card much much earlier

  • hey guys, a credit card Virgin here… please bear with me… What is the benefit of concierge service? Do you get discounted bookings and stuff?

Thinking of breaking in with this offer as it fits my income brackets. I have no plan to use the "credit" just applying for the FF points really.

When they say 45 days interest free, does that mean 45 days after a purchase I have to pay the outstanding balance in full?

    Thanks for the help all.

    • +4

The concierge service can help you make purchases, but it's not necessarily discounted. So, for example, if you want tickets to a sold-out concert, they might be able to get them for you, but it's going to be expensive. Don't expect much from a concierge service servicing people on $30k/year either.

The interest is UP TO 45 days. What this means is that at the end of each month you have 15 days before your bill is due. Therefore, purchases made on the first day of your billing cycle have 45 days interest free, the second has 44 days, and so on. Keep in mind that if you make a purchase on the last day of the billing month, it means you have 15 days to pay it before interest kicks in.

      • These rules.

      • +2

thank you so much! it is much clearer now

  • +7

For anyone like me wondering what 40,000 points actually gets you it's a $200 Woolworths gift card. So unless you are already a westpac customer (or want to sign up for a transaction account first) it's not really a deal as the annual fee is $150.

    • -6

Definitely agree with this. There's no point signing up for a CC just for the 'rewards'. If, like me, you use it as you would real cash (spend only what you can pay for/use it as a way to consolidate most purchases into one bulk thing at the end of the month) then its a nice little kick back, otherwise you're going to get wrecked in fees and interest.

      • +1

That was a big leap in logic from chiefbodge's comment.

And there is definitely a point in signing up for a CC just for the rewards. I do that and I've never paid fees or interest.

        • +1

Meant it from a longer term angle, not the short term benefit. Fair point though, was thinking a bit too fast haha.

      • +1

I didn't pay any fee or interest to get my $300 woolies card last time. You noob.

        • +1

As I said above, I was talking more long term, so I misunderstood the post I initially replied to, sorry.

That said though, keep in mind that the credit checks that are required to get a line of credit like a CC or a loan do effect your credit history in an ever so slightly negative manner, which could in turn effect your ability to secure other lines of credit in the future. It's not going to be major unless you're hitting these things up very frequently, but something to consider. :)

        • @LibertyPrime:

What are you even talking about. If I pay off the card on time, there will be $0 interest.

          Yes, I know.

    • +2

Gift cards are a pretty poor value way of using your points. QFF points go much further when put towards a flight or sold.

      • Good point - I didn't read it properly and thought it was altitude points.40,000 QFF points are worth double what altitude points are worth for certain transactions. It's still not quite a $250 gift card via QFF though - which I agree is bad value.

  • Are additional card holders considered "Existing Westpac, St George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA customers currently holding a credit card"?

    • +1

NO additional card holders is not counted! Because the system - statement always under PRIMARY card holder name.

      • Thanks!

    • Im wondering if you/2nd card holder tried to apply?
thinking of doing the same as we have 2 card holders on our account

  • What evidence do they want? 2 weeks Pay slip or Notice of assessment for last year? I barely get above the minimum requirement for this deal.

    • This is like any other line of credit, so it'll likely be recent payslips.

  • good stuff, signing up for their online account as $5 a month is cheaper than $150 :D

    • Me too. They said that they will notify me by email within 2 days of account number and then I have to go in for ID verification. A very slow process !

      • I gave up waiting and went in to branch and opened up an account straight away ! Considering that you have to go in anyway for ID., in the end this is a better way of opening a new account.

        • so they declined my application

          closing account now

        • @jabroni: so got the wife to open a bank account then apply for this and also declined even though she makes over 30k and has no mortgage or other loans

  • Just closed off my Black so that I can become eligible for other offers in 12 months time. I hate missing out on all these repeat offers :)

    • Did they offer to waive fees? I'd like to hold onto my Black, as the benefits are great.

      • +1

A reduced annual fee of $195 which I said no thanks.

  • +1

I am holding altitude black now, no annual fee due to homeloan with westpac. I just login my internet banking, got an offer for this card as well, with limit $19,000 ready. Should I accept ? But i dont think it is qualify for those bonus points :(

    • You won't be eligible for the points, so unless you need the extra line of credit it'd probably be pointless. The amount of credit you have held against you (i.e. the total limit of all CCs/loans) has an impact on things like loan capacity and other CC signups in the future. It also earns less points per dollar spent compared to the Altitude Black IIRC.

  • +1

How many velocity or krisflyer points does one altitude point get you? I looked for 10min through westpac website and couldn't find out… It seems you have to log on to view more details.

  • I currently have a low rate card with westpac.

Can I take up this offer and transfer my balance off my low rate card (to take advantage of the 0% transfer) onto this one?

Is that possible within the same bank?

  • -4

    Useless sh*t.

New customer will get points but needs to pay $150 annual fee.

Existing customer has first year fee waived but don't get any points.

    Nicely done Westpac!

  • Damn didn't read it correctly at all! I have existing CC with Westpac and applied thinking I will be eligible for the points and $0 annual fee but nope spoke to a rep and said I will only get the $0 annual fee no points :(

    • Most, if not all, CC offers DO exclude existing CC holders.

  • Have a Westpac mortgage so get free credit card, which is in my name.
I wonder if my missus can sign up for this deal, as she is additional card holder.

  • I have a question about the balance transfer feature of this card.
As i read from the other posts for balance transfer, seems like that if i have the balance transfer applied.
Whenever i make a purchase will not entitle to the normal interest free period (Let's say 45 days) and if I use this card to buy stuff worth $1000 to earning the FF point, I will need to pay the interest for ( Balance transfer amount and the new purchase )?
Is that true? Or because this card have 0% purchase interest rate for 3 months, that kinda cancel each other out?

    • I was just asking Westpac the exact same thing! I asked:

So say I have a $10k balance transfer, and then I spend $1k to be eligible for the bonus points. I wouldn't want to pay interest on the $1k of spending and have no interest on the $10k, so if I made a $1k payment on the card, would it pay off the $1k of spending, or would it reduce the $10k interest free portion to $9k, or would it do something else?

      They responded:

The purchase would be paid off first before the balance transfer

      • This is true, but you will be charged interest on the full closing balance amount for the amount of time there are purchases on the card until the purchases are paid off. so better not using the card if you have a bt

      • The part that I am certain of is that "Repayments will always come off the highest interest rate portion first" (ie to your benefit)
My 'uneducated' suggestion would be to pay the $1000 plus a margin for interest say $25, plus whatever would have been your minimum payment for the $10k balance transfer - to which I would also add a small margin for error…. say another $25.

      • Did anyone end up getting a clearer answer to this question from Westpac?

        • Yes, today's chat:

Me: I signed up with deal to get 40k QFF bonus points for a minimum $1k spend in the first 90 days, and took up the offer of an interest-free balance transfer at the same time. Now I understand that if I make a payment, first it goes towards the additional spending I have made, then it goes towards the outstanding balance transfer balance? So if I transferred $10k, and spent $500 in the first statement, I would need to pay $500 plus some minimum repayment percentage of the $10k balance transfer outstanding balance?

Westpac: Yes that is correct so you are trying to maintain that balance transfer without affecting the interest so you would need to make a minimum 2% repayment on the BT of $10,000 and then repay the full amount of $500 spent in the first statement.

I contacted them because I just received a statement, and the minimum payment amount due is 2% of the total outstanding balance (BT + spending). My actual payment will be (2% of BT) + spending, rounded up to maybe the nearest $10.

        • +1

A safe way for BT is: spend 1k to get the 40k QFF piont, pay off the balance, then apply for the BT, I talked to Westpac, and was informed that the BT offer would be valid within 30 days since the card application.

  • A little off topic but anyone know if Westpac is willing to waive annual fee for existing customers with the Black CCs? Ive just been charged the fee for this year but was contemplating cancelling and signing up for another card.

    • Check the financial table in the email you received when your cards were ready to be collected.

      Credit fees and charges

Annual Card Fee $0.00 annual fee. Charged to your account following the first cash advance or credit purchase transaction and charged to your account in subsequent years on or after the anniversary of the first charge.

      And at the bottom…

Under the contract, the annual percentage rate, the interest free period, the minimum payment and the fees and charges may all be varied without your consent. Your credit limit may be reduced without your consent. New fees or charges may also be introduced without your consent. We will notify you or advertise changes before they are made as set out in the Consumer Credit Cards Conditions of Use.

Call them and note this reference, and offer to forward the email on to them. They'll have to make a compromise here…

Let us know how you go, cause there are a lot of us here with that card, and I think we've all grown quite fond of it. :)

      • Oh my, I had forgotten about that. Now to do sort through my paperwork and find that document just in case. Edit: found it, turns out just piling paperwork on your desk is a usable filing system.

Finally cancelled my Woolworths Platinum card today which I haven't used in over a year, retention offer was 1000 QFF points.

  • For anyone curious the application process online is pretty quick…. i setup a new savings account yesterday, then applied for the credit card straight after, got email this morning saying approved and cards are being sent. So… there is still time to snag those qantas points!
