  • Great find! Nb this isn't an ultraportable laptop (ultrabook) at 2.3kg but with these specs you can't go wrong!

    • Thanks, was looking for that.
My 3yr old Dell Inspiron 15R is 2.7kg (plus case and charger) which isnt fun to carry long distances.

      • I have the same laptop.. Crazy how big and heavy it is.

The deal for its smaller brother that you lined to is a much better machine and therefore was a much better deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/231175

The deal is still available. I have no idea why it is marked as expired.

All you're getting with this is more bulk and weight to carry. The screen is the same resolution.

The DVD drive is useless - I seriously can't remember the last time I even saw a DVD. It has been years. Blu ray maybe.

The differences between the graphics cards are minimal: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R7-M360-vs-Radeon-R7-M370

In either case, you are not going to get anything like desktop graphics performance - these are not gaming laptops. Either will do for some low intensity gaming.

There is no reason to get the 15" unless you really want the larger screen.

The best VFM deal is to spec the E460 with the 1080p display and the i5: http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/deals/current-offers/laptops-fo…

Says $765. It may be possible to make it cheaper.

Remember, when comparing the i5 6200U vs i7 6500U, the only difference is the higher clock speed and larger cache. i7's used to almost universally be quad core, not any more.

tl;dr Get the E460 with the i5 or i7 and 1080p display depending on your budget - you're really not losing out on much by getting the i5.

I'll let TA update the deal, have to run :-)

    • I got $821 with upgraded 1080p screen, 8gb ram, better WiFi, and downgrade to Win10 Home.

Deduct $67 for 4gb ram and STD WiFi ($754).
Extra $88 to upgrade Intel 520 gfx to AMD Radeon R7.
      Weight is "from 1.9kg".

      • +1

$17 for 2x2 WiFi is worth it if you are connecting to a decent router.

Better to go 4GB RAM and pay $50 for a 8GB stick separately and make it a 12GB machine
$200 for i7 totally not worth it
Pro version Windows for $100 unlikely worth it unless there's a specific must-have feature
And buy SSD separately of course

    • What would you suggest primarily for snappy browsing, and maybe some light video editing?

I can't decide if I should just go bottom end or if the few hundred extra might give a substantially better machine (Ie good vfm)

(Fwiw I use an external monitor 60% of the time)

      • +1

$899 for 14" E460 with 1080p screen and the i7 processor. As soon as you get the laptop set that hard disk on fire :P and buy an SSD - at least 500GB for video editing. 16GB RAM would be nice but you can upgrade down the line.

        http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/deals/current-offers/deals-of-t…

I haven't the faintest idea why anyone would pick the 15" over this one.

        • Thanks! Last question, I'm new to SSDs and OZbargain seems to like Samsung EVOs, but I can't quite work out what size I'd need… It has a 2.5" HDD, but Google says there are different thicknesses, I'd hate to make a silly mistake! Thoughts?

        • +1

          @nuchalis:

Not an issue. It comes with a hard drive which means there's a 9mm slot. Most ssds these days are 7mm and come with 9mm adapters. Just look up specs of the ssd you buy.

    • +1

M370 is about 50% faster than the M360, but the outcome is the same as your point makes out, both are still terrible for gaming.

      • +2

Could be. There's also an R9 M370 and some sort of M370X and at that point I am too pissed off with their deliberately misleading names and the general crappiness of laptop graphics to do any more research :D

The R7 M370 is about the same as the 740M on my five year old Dell laptop, and even back then gaming on the 740M was a massive disappointment: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R7-M370-vs-GeForce-GT-740M

  • Is the processor speed the highlight of this deal as eveything seems pretty ordinary.

  • +4

Oh dannyboi, the Lenovo Thinkpad's calling,
From chip to chip, and down the processor socket
The CPU's strong, and the UHD screen's vibrant
The price is good and you must buy and I will ship

    • +1

        Racism against the Irish

        • +1

I still don't get it. I see nothing but a song about a laptop set to a well known tune. Words requires negative context before they can be racist - there is none of that here(?).

  • +1

TA, please link my deal to your deal (the one with the Australia code)

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/230997

    • Thanks & done :)

  • +1

Oh yeah and you can also add a notebook sleeve to your order for $1

  • The touch pad on with those buttons are ugly on this. Dont know why Lenovo persist with it

    • +1

The trackpoint + buttons provide better control and precision. I like it much better than the touchpads.

      • try touch pad on macbook pro.

the touch pad on my xps13 is ok, way better than the one on sony's pro13. but nothing can be compared to mac's.

        • Had to use a Macbook Pro the other day and ended up plugging in a crappy Acer mouse I found lying around because the touchpad caused me no end of trouble.

Give me real buttons on a touch pad any day of the week.

    • The touch pad on with those buttons are ugly on this. Dont know why Lenovo persist with it

It's been a signature design hallmark of ThinkPads going back to the IBM days in the 1990s. The trademark red tactile buttons above the trackpad, red pointing stick/TrackPoint and black-on-black, no-nonsense aesthetic. Brand recognition; and besides ThinkPads were always about substance over style.

  • Any deals on laptops with a SSD?

    • There's a 192GB SSD upgrade option for $100.

    • Umain get Samsung ssd and install yourself.

      • upgrading using their option is fine for people that don't want to / can't be arsed.

  • you can also get an additional education discount, around $30-$40 with Student email Address. I've been shopping for months for School Laptops. Missed the microsoft store $700 Dell at XMAS, the current microsoft store Dell 15 5000, just sold out, and the Dell online store, does not have any FHD screens for under a grand. Thanks Lenovo, got one (560) this morning.

    • how do you? my cart says its still the $934. ive signed up using my connect@quteduau address, and im at the final stage of my cart checkout, still saying 934

edit:dont worry, figured it out, have to get there via the education store

      • Any idea if the education store is compatible with Cashrewards?

  • -5

    It's only a dual-core processor, I'll pass.

    • +2

do you even ulv processor bruh

    • You doing rendering or parallel programming with a laptop?

$934 for a core i7 dual core with HT is a bargain. You're not going to get a 4 core mobile CPU for that price.

I'd buy it but the battery life isn't above 8 hours, so I am gonna pass.

      • I've seen Laptops with an AMD A6 quad core CPU going for around $600. But i suppose you didn't mean AMD 4 core mobie CPU's.

        • +1

I just don't consider AMD CPUs anymore. I might in my next desktop build, because it's sad to see the underdog lose so badly.

        • Actually you can currently get a AMD A6 4 core CPU laptop for $465.80 from JB. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/lenovo/l…

Technically speaking it is a 4 core mobile CPU laptop. Just saying you can find a 4 core CPU laptop for under that price howbeit not near as good as the Intel i7 one.

    • -2

Which new i7 laptops have quad core these days? Quad core doesn't always been better performance either. Look at the benchmark tests before sounding like a dill

      • Dell XPS15, HP Spectre 15, Dell Alienwares, high end metaboxes, Lenovo has a few.

They still exist. I don't particularly like dual core CPUs, but they offer good battery life.

        • -2

All are double the price or more and half the battery life. Quad Core laptops just not practical anymore for mainstream computing needs.

        • +1

          @Gavman:

You don't get to decide what's practical.
All the laptops I mentioned are premium consumer laptops.

They're practical for people who can afford it and don't mind 5-6 hours of battery life. The Dell XPS15 offers the FHD XPS15 with an 84Wh battery that can last up to 8 hours. Please don't talk nonsense just because you can't afford them.

I have one in my hand. A large increase in performance with a decrease in battery life is something I am willing to accept.

        • -1

Hence the word i use 'mainstream', bozzo. A premium customer (what ever the hell that means.. Lol) i'm guessing wouldn't waste their time on sub $1000 laptop not hang out waiting for one being anywhere near this price tag (mind you this is a sub $1000 laptop deal if you failed to notice) because I'm guessing they might need to perform 'non mainstream' tasks like working with graphics and multimedia..

        • @Gavman:

I don't think you know what the word mainstream means and I'm well aware what this thread is about. You're the one who started attacking quad core laptops for unwarranted reasons.

Your use of vague words like mainstream only serve to denigrate your ridiculous preconceived notions about quad core laptops. Gaming, photo editing, video editing are all mainstream tasks in my opinion.
I said 'premium consumer laptops,' which are a class of laptops that are made of high-end materials and usually have better than average specs. That doesn't mean they're not marketed towards everyday consumers.

My parents do mainstream tasks, but that doesn't stop them spending $2k+ on laptops. Many uni students own macbooks, which are in excess of $2000 these days and they use it for surfing the web and word processing.

        • OK. I rekon your missing the mark here but yeh, agree to disagree as I don't think Video editing is mainstream at all. Your average joe pc user wouldn't know how to use video editing software and even simple editing they may know how to use wouldn't absolutely require 'quad core power'. Mainstream would cover your average news/social media following, word processing, email reading, occasional gaming etc.

And practical means suitable for a particular purpose. Obviously your purpose is different to others. But common sense tells me that $2000 laptops are not the mainstream and the market would suggest that as well.

I believe with a good SSD drive, most users would not notice a difference therefore they wont justify paying an extra $1000 on Maybe 10-20% CPU performance a quad core processer which they will never utilise at the expense of battery life most mainstream PC users would

        • Agree. It's a shame the quad-core's are becoming rare. Laptops with an i7 quad-core from 4+ years ago are beating 6th-gen ULV i7's. If people had a better understanding of the performance difference, and the quad's were more common, I doubt many people would choose the ULV ones.

        • Depends on what people want from a laptop and how much they want to spend. People who need processing power of quad-cores know about them and seek them out over sub $1000 people expect to have ULV's. Does anyone really expect to buy $900 laptop with quad-core processor these days?

        • @Gavman: I did when I first started looking, because that's what I got 5 years ago! But I agree that more people would care about battery life than having 4 cores.

        • @Gavman: >Your average joe pc user wouldn't know how to use video editing software

          You're amazingly thick lel.

Video editing software is included in all distributions of Windows and Macintosh. It's very easy to use.

      • You're right that most new laptops are not quad core, but quad core is usually better performance for multithreaded programs. My 5 year old i7 quad-core Dell cost $800 and outperforms this according to cpubenchmark.net

        • Yet you would probably get 2 hours battery life out of it. Hardly compare on that basis really.

        • @Gavman: It's nearly always plugged in so I don't care about battery life. Yes, ULV processors use less power but are also less powerful.

        • Fair enough. The stock battery being 5 years old would be dead by now anyways unless u replaced it.

      • The skylakes even have quad core i5 now (no hyperthreading). Dell XPS15 is an example. The actual chip costs the same from Intel as dual core Core i5 versions, but requires 45W instead of 15W for the low power i5. This means the laptop manufacturer needs more expensive engineering and battery capacity to keep it cool and retain long battery life.

  • +1

You also have the option to add the 3D sense technology for $67 in the E560 but not on the smaller brother E460. With 3D printers becoming mainstream, the realsense camera might be useful.

    • +1

The Realsense camera can also be used for the facial recognition login in Windows 10.

  • +1
  • If only it was lighter and slimmer, ie. lose the CD drive. Really need a 15" screen for designing but can't quite justify the XPS 15.

  • what external monitors connections does this have? I'd want to be able to run 2x 24inch monitors side by side

  • code DECWELC2015 doesn't stack with AUSTRALIA?

  • +2

How are you getting that price. Clicking on ur link the E560

eCoupon:AUSTRALIA Gives me the price $1,142.40

    After downgrading windows. $ 1,057.40

Option says subtract $ 100.00 but as shown above its less.

    • Because Lenovo have jacked up the starting price by a couple of hundred. Not much or a discount anymore.

      • I think I saw the equivalent going for cheap in the US. Guess Lenovo here realised they forgot to apply the Australia tax.

  • I had the same issue as Damned above, but seems like it's been reverted. I can get $934 again.

  • Is it free shipping?

  • Looks like the "love" for lenovo has long forgotten.

  • I was looking to buy a new computer, but only when I bought new memories and battery to upgrade my laptop, this deal showed up. I'll try to pass, but it's very tempting

  • Ok bit the bullet on this one.

Downgraded to Windows 10 Home but took the $100 Office Home and student offer + $1 sleeve = $1034

    Thanks.

    $825.30 instead of $917.00

    • +3

Couldn't help myself at that price, thanks for that.

    • Unreal value. I just bought this config but with the 192Gb SSD (I figured for $100 its good to go out of the box and will keep me going for a while). All for $915 with DECWELC2015. Takes it down to $881 with Cashrewards! Can't see anything coming close to that in terms of value.

    • Shit, just bought new memory and battery to upgrade my 6yr old lapt. But I`m very tempted to get this one.

      • I'm holding off till later this year, AMD and NVIDIA are releasing new GPUs and I want one of those as it should really benefit mobile devices.

    • Is it possible to add a second harddrive to E460?

      • +1

No, replacement only as it is more of an Ultrabook than laptop. Good news is that it isn't too difficult to replace.

If you plan to replace the drive, it is a good idea to pick the 1TB as it is cheaper and is more useful as an external drive than 192GB SSD.

        • +1

you could also replace that dvdrw player with a hard drive caddy, if you don't use the dvd feature that much

        • +1

@KeplersLaws: Yes, you could if you had an optical drive there…

    • Has this price expired? Can't seem to quite get the 825.30 anymore

      • Probably.

  • AUSTRALIA discount code is no longer valid.

    • I still got it, using my uni account, but I created a new account and the code seems to have expired

  • Did anyone receive their laptop without a battery or power pack?

    • Someone I know bought one but is due to arrive this Friday. I will ask him when it arrives.

      • Lol, please don't. It was tucked into the side of the box, the box looked empty.

        Feeling pretty foolish right now.

        • Was just going to say check the box. Yes its on the side =]

        • Tee hee

  • I took delivery of an E560 with i5 and FHD IPS panel last week - I'm sending it back for refund due to terrible backlight bleed in one corner. Just as well, looks like I got ripped off as this i7 version is (was) slightly cheaper.
