Install the steam client if you haven't already.
There should be a '+' icon at the bottom left corner of the client.
Click that then choose to activate a product on steam.
Keep pressing 'Next' or 'I agree' and paste the download code.
The game should download and install.

I already own a copy and didn't end up buying it. I would assume it may appear in your order history. You may also have received a confirmation e-mail which usually has the code on it.
On the website order history, look under Your Downloads. There is a box that says Serial Numbers (for activation). That's the steam key. Copy and paste with the above instructions by Unseatingcargo1.

About half way down the page under * Your Downloads * the name of the game is in purple. To the right of this is the code which you enter into Steam.
1) Launch Steam
2) Click on the "Games" tab then on "Activate a product on Steam"
3) Copy and Paste the code and click next.
4) Then follow the instructions on screen.
5) The game shoudl now be added to your library, you may have to go to your library, right click it, then click 'Install Game…'.

Complete edition usually implies that you get the base game and all DLC released (with some exceptions). So no, you don't need to already own the base game.

For some reason it's saying the product code is invalid? I'm trying to "Activate a product on Steam" by copying the code, but it doesn't seem to be working. Can anyone help?
Edit: I see what I've done wrong. I thought I could do it all through Steam, didn't realise I had to buy the code off of their website! My mistake.

There are two versions of this game on this website. The Mac version is full price.

I think (but cannot confirm) that if you activate the PC version on Steam it will be available on Mac.

Can anyone suggest where to start for a newbie like me who has never playing any of the Civ games? May as well train up whilst I wait for my 8+gb download from Steam ;) It seems with all the expansions included it could get overwhelming. Any recommended trainers?

I think that video is for before the expansions, so it wont be that useful. For single player games check out Marbozir and for multiplayer FilthyRobot is probably the best.
