  • Im a bit wary of the "UpTo 8mbit Speeds".. I always thought ADSL1 would have somehow a guaranteed speed because the lines are well established? If its "up to" 8mbit, then i might aswell use the cheaper ADSL2+ with "up to" 24mbit speeds?

    • dont adsl and adsl2+ use the same lines just different techniques?

    • ADSL1 has the same distance limitations as ADSL2.

The only reason you'd go ADSL1 is if you can't get ADSL2.

      Cheers

      • People on CMUX/RIM (as mentioned in the post) can't get ADSL2+..
I'm one of those.. "up to 8mbps" is as good as I can get.
I do get 8mbps at 3am… but usually get about 3mbps

  • +2

Wow, that Beginner plan is really poor value. 2GB/month + $3/GB excess for $35, and they count uploads.

Sounds more like a trap than a plan. I think they're doing their customers a disservice even offering it.

    • This is actually very good for 8mbps ADSL… It's all resold Telstra capacity, noone else has ADSL1 equipment

    • A fair number of people around Australia are paying Telstra $29.95 for 200mb 256k ADSL. For the same price, if you bundle, they can now access the internet at uncapped ADSL1 speeds (up to 8000k), and get 10x the usage limit.

      • ^^ what you are saying is incorrect.

The lowest plan Telstra have at the moment is 1500/256 2G cap for $40 http://www.bigpond.com/internet/plans/adsl/plans-and-offers/

edit … and on a 24month contract it could be $20 or $30:
        http://www.bigpond.com/internet/plans/adsl/latest-offer/

        • No, while the plan I quoted is not one that Telstra currently sell, it was on sale since 2004 - 2009, and there are lots of people on it.

          • @aaNet: locked in for 24 or 36 months.. as is the Telstra way.

      • Telstra is a white elephant anyway. They charge some ridiculous amounts for all their very basic internet plans. With Internet and telecommunication facilities, some poor developing countries are far ahead from Australia and Telstra must play a big role in holding Australia back in infrastructure side.

  • wow..upload is counted and they still call it: "Generous" usage quota!!

  • +3

i was quite sold to it until i found out that upload is part of your quota..

    RUBBISH

  • yeah it looked good until you read uploads counted

  • +1

Before you dismiss these plans because they count uploads, it's worth noting that apart from heavy usage of peer-to-peer file sharing, at least 80% if not 90% of internet usage will be downloads only.

The 8000 Family plan is actually pretty good value - most ISPs charge a premium for 8Mbps plans. By comparison, with Internode you also get 50GB p/mth for $49.95 but this is only at 1.5MBps*, and uploads are counted also.

However I don't know the reliability of aaNet nor the bundled features, so caveat emptor as always. And for the record, I'm with Internode (and I'm not planning on changing).

    * Unless you have access to ADSL2+ plans, in which case you will get better value with other ADSL2+ plans anyhow.

    • +1

      aaNet have a decent reputation.

      • It is also important to note, aaNet does sell ADSL2+, and those plans do not count uploads.

This range of 8000k plans is perfect for people in RIM or CMUX areas - and cannot get ADSL2+

  • Boo Hoo :-(

Can't get it on my exchange. 50GB even with upload counted at that price is still great value!

  • -8

    Erm. Not a good deal.

TPG, Exetel etc offer 8-12 TIMES more quota for the same price ($50).

    • +2

      On ADSL1 they don't…

  • I'm confused are these throttled ADSL/2 plans that require and ADSL/2 DSLAM ??
also fufufu can you point me to the TPG page that offesr 8Mbit ADSL for $50 with 8-10 times the 50GB limit, I can't find it :-(

    cheers

    • +1

My bad, I was looking at ADSL2 plans (TPG offering 130GB and exetel 90GB).

      Disregard my comment above.

  • 8000-Family is a great deal, pity my exchange cant get it.

  • Pretty sure he's referring to ADSL2+ plans.

The 8000 Family isn't half bad for an ADSL1 plan

    • If adsl1 is the only thing you can get, the 8000 family is the best out - dont know why you only say "isn't half bad" … The only negative thing is that it isn't a normal 8000 plan, in that it's not available to a lot of exchanges that have normal 8000 capabilities.

      • I agree I am on a standard ADSL 1 plan with with exetel, I cant get ADSL2 and the family plan is only 5 bucks more than what I am paying now & heaps cheaper than the exetel 8M option ($90) its the best value I have seen. Their off peek 2 for 1 download isn't a bad sweetener, only other provider (8M 25G/25G $55) in that price range is Dodo and wouldn't touch them with a 400 foot pole

        • Im currently with exetel on a now extinct plan ( TELM) $65 a month + $3 admin fee + new $5 fee to stay on extinct plan and although i can't get this aanet special 8k plan i just saw that dodo adsl2 is available to me. For a little less a month, the plan is adsl2 with 100gig. Im currently on 12/54 so i am thinking about it. But i am quite a distance away from the exchange (around 3-4 kms) and my Line Attenuation is 49 for download and 28 for upload. What are the chances that i will be syncing at anything higher then 6mb?

          TY

          • @RJE91: Steer clear of Dodo no matter what your sync speed I say..

          • @RJE91: I was with TPG ADSL2+ for two years. But I am moving house next month. My new place is just 500 meters away from exchange and it's ADSL2+ enabled. Some providers have available ADSL2+ ports but TPG doesn't have available ports. When checked with TPG they don't tell anything on the availability of ports in future or any future plans to upgrade at the exchange. If they give a hope, I can wait until they upgrade. iiNet is there and have ports left. What do you say on iiNet. Is it a good ISP ?

        • I can't see on Dodo's website the 8M plans you talk about?

  • Sales Contact hours:

    Saturday - 10am to 7pm AEST
If you are a new customer and have a sales enquiry, please call us on 1300 665 076.

TRIED TO CONTACT THEM, its 7:24pm AEST here. "NUMBER IS INCOMPLETE"??? whats the go aanet? This number is also the technical support…

  • Hi Phankhi
We've just tested the number from Perth and the number is working. You just need to select '3' for sales when you phone the number.

  • ahh they charge on excess usage! not for me then…

    i prefer to be shaped

  • Hi REP,

I have just applied and it says u can check your order status on the left, but there is no link on the website to do that. WTH!

How can i track the status.

Also, I am on a pair gain line, what would happen if Telstra rejects my application? I hope AANET doesnt charge you the application fee.

  • The Pay-as-you-go plan from a few months ago was better than this one, but this is still heaps better than Optus Cable I have at the moment. Hopefully I can switch to this one.

    New setup fee $129
    Churn fee $59

    A bit expensive …

    • +2

IIRC the PAYG plan is only available on ADSL2+.

Agree, connection fee a bit high, but taking into account it's only a 12 month contract, not too bad at all.

silversurfer, would you consider doing a special for OzBargain fans by waiving/reducing the connection fee?

You will get A LOT more +'s and ultimately greater exposure here on OzBargain! Just ask LogitechShop of the benefits for both business and consumer!

For eg. I would churn to aaNet right now, but I would have to terminate my Internode connection early ($99 fee) + pay $59 churn fee to aaNet.

  • Time to switch from Exetel! :)

  • very few exchanges supported….

    • There is over 400 telephone exchanges in the supported list, including any associated sub-exchange equipment. It is available in far more exchanges than any ADSL2+ provider - and is an option for those who cannot get ADSL2.

      • Why then can I (Gympie exchange) get ADSL2+ (Dodo and Telstra) but not 8M from aaNet?

EDIT: Ah I see, I can get 8Mbps from aaNet, but not on these particular plans. Hmm…

  • +1

It's just a reminder how lucky those of us that can get ADSL2 are.

  • -2

    How is this a bargain?
    TPG $50 for adsl2+ 130gb dls and 24mbit speeds
    Or
Optus $60 for cable 20mibt (stable net) 90gig dls good offpeak times 12-12

    • Umm… if you read through some of the comments you will realise this IS a bargain for people who can only get ADSL1 from their exchange.

Especially re the 8000 Family $54.90p/m 50GB plan, I have never seen this kind of pricing.

    • Yup.. I currently pay $65/month to get 10Gb/10Gb (On/Off peak) 8mbps ADSL1 (I'm on a RIM so I can't get ADSL2+) and there's no cable running down my street (It run's down all my neighbor's streets just not mine, probably because we have a park on one side, ie no customers that side). At the time I connected, that was easily the best price available.
So the $50/month 50Gb is superb value to me!
For all you b@stards on ADSL2+, stop your whining…

  • something tells me the telcos know when you're boxed in a corner and can't get adsl2 and so jack up adsl1 plans, you can blame telstra for lack of upgrades!

    • Telstra, the feudal lord of exchanges in Australia…

  • REP - did the number checker and I can't get these plans. :( Are these plans using Telstra wholesale? Would love to get one of these plans if you can bend the rules. :)

  • For those who can't get ADSL2+, if you live in Adelaide, you may try AdamMax.
    http://www.adam.com.au/products/adammax/adammax_cost.php

The speed is up to 12Mbps. what i get is 10Mbps.
50G (25+25) for $69.95. But it doesn't need a telstra landline. So if you cancel that, the price is around $50 for 50G.

  • why I suddenly feel that I'm reading whirpool discussion thread rather that ozbargain?

    lol..

  • Im on a 95g plan with pacnet (bundled) for $99. Wish I could get adsl2 though.

  • I wish I understood the logic or technical reason for which exchanges qualified.

  • +1

i live in boronia, suburb of melbourne, yet we have no ADSL2 services here except horribly over priced plans from telstra which every exchange in oz can get…YET we cannot get this 8mb plan from AANET….

the point i was getting at is that very few exchanges support this plan, in comparison to the amount of exchanges in australia….so the usefulness is limited to "some" people

i dont know the logic behind why some exchanges get it and others dont

basically if i want a faster speed my only option here is to pay 3 times as much, and get less than 1/30th of the quota for the price!!

    • +1

Agreed…REP - can you explain this?

I would love to use these plans…please, please, please, please, please, please

  • -1

It is simply not possible for aaNet to offer these low rates on other exchanges at this time - if we did so, we would lose significant sums of money on those plans every month.

400 exchanges, including their RIMs and sub-exchanges is more coverage than any ADSL2+ provider at this time.
