Their website says you can pick up a complimentary copy instore, and it has been saying so for years…

          @bonky:

It might say $5 but if you ask at the counter, they will generally give to you for free anyway. Especially if you are buying something at the same time. Also applies to Jaycar Electronics.

      catalogues aren't bargains…

This isn't just a catalogue, I have spent many days of my life in the toilet reading the Jaycar and Altronics catalogues over the last 20 years and looking for ideas on how to make my life more complex. So yes this is a bargain as it saves having to pay to obtain one and it's not just a catalogue.

You never have to pay, they're always free, as per their website over the past few years….

        • hey jv! are u the kinda person tht buys calendars 6mths into the current year.. to save a few dollars?

        • five finger discount JV?

          buys calendars

          Nope, I print my own… https://goo.gl/41Trc0

        • There's always been a massive pile of them at the Auburn store entrance, never had to pay to grab one (or more) although these days it's so much easier to search the website.

          @ JV

Knock it off. They are NOT always free. Like Bonky said above (jokingly), they would not give a catalog to me on two occasions, in shop while making purchases.
The catalog is 'often' free but it costs them to produce these glossy books, much like Farnell and RS Spares cats. So they say they are just passing on the cost to the customer.
JV I think you're effectively flaming in this post. Have you even shopped in Altronic's store? For shame, for shame, for shame ;-/

        • Well Bonky is the exception. These catalogs are pretty much always free.

      • @Maverick-au

You should probably go grab the free Royal pic offered here recently.

Also good for the throne. Nothing like a good Royal Flush.

    • Tell me about it - I get dozens delivered to my letterbox every week for nothing!
Can't understand how this got front-page

  • Best part about Altronics is that they actually send it even when they get Ozbargain'd… unlike Jaycar.

Who's old enough to remember the Tandy electronics cataloge..1/2 thick and chocked full of bargains.

    • +1

Whoaaa I remember them when I was really really little, the catalog was huge, I used to think it was a book when I was little, but inside was always a bazillion prices of things.

    • +1

We'll all be saying that soon about the Dick Smith catalogues as well. Been a little while since I've seen one - they came attached to Silicon Chip magazines like Jaycar and Altronics catalogues do these days.

      • Yes, lots of good techie stuff in the back too. And who can remember the random "fake" items such as the Co-Tanger aerial?

    • When I was a kid, it was the Farnell and RS catalogs which were the holy grail. So many parts, so unobtainable…

    • +1

I can remember when Tandy gave out "free battery" cards, every month you could go in and claim a free battery. It was almost always a 9V battery, at the time there wasn't a lot of things that could be powered by a single AAA, AA, C or D battery.

      • Ahhhhh!!! this reminds me of my days before ozbargain

        I had two Battery Cards

        shhhhhhh!

        • Aaah, yes I remember the good old days accumulating my free zinc batteries!

  • +3

jv doesn't like it, so it must be a good deal!

I'm pleased to see Altronics still exist, they're good, and their cattledogs are awesome!

    • +4

Dickos and altronic cats have had a handy reference section in them too. Was using this before the web and Altavista changed things a bit.

      • +5

Yep, I keep an ancient copy of a DSE catalog just for that purpose. I can't tell you what year it was, the cover has long since disappeared.

Remember when DSE catalogs always had one humourous item in them? I remember the "energy saving broken light bulb" and the "Co-tanger replacement car antenna, also a map of Australia". It was a coat hanger bent into the shape of Australia.

I can't remember what I did last week, but I remember these well….

  • Mine finally turned up today. I think it was bigger last year.
