Used by people in countries where if you browse the wrong sites the army or police take you away. Was developed by the US to enable disidents to use the Internet and communicate.

i thought the title read "access to the Danknet" and was used by people in countries who were born too late to experience history, too early to explore space, but just in time to access Dank memes

      • +2

The danknet is all around us my friend.

Used in those Orwellion countries where the government keeps records of your browsing and communication history so it can be used against you if need be.

  • You just never know when KGB decides to audit your internet browsing.
Sorry, didn't mean to make you paranoid.

    • Now I can't privately send an email to Roman to go bowling without the homeland spying.

Niko Bellic is a Serb ;-)

        • Close enough :P. I always thought he was Russian purely off his accent.

  • Is this an alternate to VPN? I mean will the ISP be aware of my traffic?

      https://www.hotspotshield.com/learn/tor-vs-vpn/

I wouldn't recommend Tor if you're in Australia. It very slow, and if you're doing something that needs that level of protection it's probably (very) illegal.

It is okay for an unblocking service if you are behind a work/school proxy.

TOR itself is insecure. Its design has been proven insecure over and over again.

    • Yes, I also wanted to mention this. Before using Tor you should do your research and learn a bit about how it works. Whoever is in control of guard nodes and exit nodes (NSA, CIA, etc) can basically control the network and determine your identity. Also the fact that you can be used as a relay means that your IP could be used for shady activities far worse than 'piracy'.

      • Can you confirm if this app uses your connection as a relay? Or are you speaking generally?

        • I was just thinking generally, I don't know for this specific app. Are you willing to trust that they aren't?

You normally need to opt-in to be a relay on your computer. Regardless of whether you are a relay or not I wouldn't trust it with my privacy on the internet.

  • Thanks OP, will give it a go!
