2TB Seagate Desktop Hard Drive = $115 Less 20% = $92 Delivered @ Futu Online eBay

CVALENTINE20

These 2TB Seagates (ST2000DM001) have a bad reputation in some circles, but in my experience they are no worse than any other 2TB drives and a hell of a lot better than WD Green drives…

Note some Australian wholesalers have increased drive prices by a few $ recently too…

Anyway $92 delivered is a steal.

They are normally about $98 to $100 at MSY, without shipping. Around the same at Shopping Express who sometimes have free shipping promos…

Cheapest price on StaticIce is $98 (Warehouse 1 list as $90.95 but then charge a minimum of $15.95 delivery….)

  • meh 2TB is too small to waste a sata port on!

    • in my NAS anyway.. shit i feel too entitled.

      • 6TB NAS for $348?
        8TB Archive for $295.20?

        • that 5TB ext hdd was a beauty at $190

        • @xEnt: so was the 4TB ext HDD for $84

        • @xEnt:

          not really.

The best deal was officeworks 5TB for $149.

    • yeap,

I don't even bother looking at 2TB anymore

it is just a waste of sata port, and eventually you will want a bigger hdd.

      ===
The minium hdd I would get is 5TB.

I would love an 8TB at a cheaper price, below $200.

They are normally about $98 to $100 at MSY

So 20% off an inflated price for the worst brand of hard drive ever.

    Any bargains?

More bargains than you've ever posted in six years..

    • click and collect at woollies is good for people who don't live near msy or who don't like to stand inline at msy on Saturday mornings or be put on hold trying to find out if local msy has stock.

so msy is good on price but might not suit everybody's location or shopping experience
preferences , so these deals are great for some people although the price might not be rock bottom.

ST2000DM001 is the worst hd drive I ever use. High running temperature, very very very noisy motor, but low reliability, low speed. You can buy this one if you just want to save data as backup hd drive, its a bargain. But for normal use or NAS, this is not the one.

I wonder if you are talking from real world experience or just a lemming following the crowd?

When these drives were first released (4+ years ago) a bad batch and bad firmware led to a high failure rate of early drives.

      This was addressed by Seagate.

The drives are hardly slow. Noisy at times perhaps, hot perhaps, but slow they are not.

In my real world experience (200+ drives) excluding those early drives, their failure rate is far lower than 2tb WD Green and isn't abnormally high.

+1, I have one of these drives and they're amazing (almost 1 year old today). Seems quiet to me, runs below 50 degrees in summer, and gives >200MB/s sustained read/write speeds.

I did some diagnostics on my failed WD green … turned out the head was parked too often and exceeded specs ….. some type of types of downloads do that, so not good a drive to download torrents onto just as it parks the heads, the torrent client has some more data it wants to write, proper NAS drives is much better suited for that ….. but I haven't lost a green under normal use and they are low power, make good boot drives …. the 5400 rpm is to save powered lower heat ….. the one in my iMac has been going for over 6 years.

I think it's a matter of right drive for the right job and different drives are designed for different applications…….

        • If you are torrenting shouldn't you be almost continually writing?

Therefore the heads won't park too often because they park when there is no activity for a certain time (5 seconds, 10 seconds, etc). As a primary drive that is not torrenting parking is more of a problem - think every time you open a web page the drive has to unpark.

Greens are designed to be non-boot data drives. I used to get them (2tb) but I experienced a lot of DOA drives and about 25% failed within 1 year so I stopped using them.

      • I had 2 of them 2 years ago in my Synology NAS running 24/7, first one dead after 14 month, second one dead after 19 month, and they are noisy (motor) compare with WD RED. May be hit and miss, bad luck.

        • Bear in mind WD Red are around $130+ each versus less than $100 for these.

I can't comment on Reds quality because I won't pay that price - I do love 1TB Blues - but the 2TB Blues are expensive and hard to find.

Been running this drive since July 2013, and have had zero issues or concerns - as much as I don't like Seagate as a brand.

No heat issues, no noise issues, no reliability issues.

    Must be hit and miss.

  • +1

have used a number of Seagate drives over the years,
    havent had any issues.
currently 1TB sshd, 3TB and 4TB, no complaints.
and yea it will run hot if you have crap cooling lol

  • Great drives for the money, one of the best bang for buck in respect to quality and performance. ( if you have no need for more than 2TB i mean]

Bought mine in 20102 and its still going strong at 100% health and performance.

Not noisy and doesn't heat up as far as I can see, and this particular drive is installed in a system that is in a humid place all year round.

Tempted to grab one, but really look at a minimum of 4TB these days

    • "Bought mine in 20102" Well….that's cool !?!

  • I have a 1TB thats been going since 2008 the 2TB I bought lasted 2 yrs. =\

  • Classic ozbargain hdd arguments: non-expert v expert.

    • +3

I can guarantee no one here is a real expert, despite what they think. These arguments are just a collection of opinions from people that own a computer.

  • are wd green really that bad? was gonna get the 4tb from futu.

    • 5400rpm and head parking.

Even if they are more reliable than I believe they are, why would you do it?

    • Why not buy the 4tb WD Blue they have for sale. I love Blues…

      • Wd blue? Care to share the link? Is it from futu as well?
Was looking to buy the external HDd which most says is a green in a box

    • WD green were slower speed drives that suited builders of quiet systems looking for cheap storage. Some people didn't like the trade off. The head parking issue could reduce life expectancy in some scenarios.

WD are no longer selling Green drives. They've been merged into the Blue range.

  • This exact model drive just failed on me today after a couple of years use. Probably just bad luck, but I won't buy the same unit again.
