  • Location?

Edit: thanks for updating. I guessed where it was but its much easier for everyone if the location of a deal appears in the title in the first place so no need to waste time googling deals :)

The food and drink at these are unbelievable. Highly recommend going. See my previous posts

    • when was the lunch provided?

      • After the speakers were finished. So in 2014 it was about 2PM but there were 3 very interesting speakers. I didn't go last year but I imagine if you go towards the end then the food will be out.

        • The website states: 'You're guaranteed to leave with a fresh new outlook, after enjoying a complimentary 'TASTE' of MCEC's award-winning food and…
= neil, do you think the organisers wont go 'all out' this year with their food?

          @rawm:

Well, they've promoted the event and have hired 2 speakers. Probably wouldn't be a good look to offer 1 dim sim to prospective clients.

      • May be by 1.00 PM. Called them and said each speech roughly around 1/2 hour.

    +1 for wank

Scotty, if you have a marketing budget - send out free OzBargain shirts to most active members. :)
Or even partner with a couple of Companies to sponsor the shirts.

      • +2

We send t-shirts/bags out regularly. Valentine's Comp

        • Awesome to hear. Send more out! Can never have enough 'free' publicity.

      Good idea

  • Thanks op

I am conflicted, a part of me wants to upvote for linking a great event. The other part can't justify it with that opening line. This event sounds fantastic and it annoys me that there are people out there intent on shitting anything publicly funded that doesn't align with their interests.

  • i am in! great find! for people who went last time, would it be awkward if i get there at 13.45?

    • +1

Nope. It's a big place made for conferences.

  • +1

I have been to this in the past and it is a good event. Great speakers and excellent food.

Rabia Siddique sounds like a badass and would make an interesting speaker.

Hostage survivor my arse. It all went to plan at the handover. Half the coalition air force was racetracking above and no one on the Iraqi side was going to shoot at anything and be the one to cause trouble.

      • -2

        You were there?

        • +4

I had been in country for two years by then. I was not in Basra for this incident, i was further north. The lawyer deserves all the credit for being a solid and effective liason however the label "hostage survivor" takes away from the many people who suffered terribly as hostages.

Cool, open space, will there be astronomers and stuff cause I'm curious to hear more about these new galaxy's.

  • Would it be weird, or ozbargainy to rock up at 1pm, gorge, leave?

  • My graduation ceremony was at MCEC in December. Can vouch that they had some pretty decent pastries, macaroons and mini quiches.

No dumplings. And mine was a paid event.

    Assuming same catering.

  • Any other OzBargainers actually attending this? I'm considering. Hoping my T-Shirt and Bag comes in time haha https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/232961

    • I am, see you at 1pm!

Got an email today from the MCEC that food will be available from 1:15pm - 2:00pm

  • Do they have free wifi?

  • Im not interested in the food. Anyone know what the speakers will speak about

  • Listening to these people spout would probably be enough to put me off the food

  • You had me at Free

  • Thanks OP. I went for the speakers, the food was a bonus!! 😜
Lots of people, but lots of food. It was a great event.

  • +3

It was totally awesome. Don't question it. Just go every year. Enough said!

    If you want details:
Crowds released a bit late, so after 1.20pm. Second speaker was amazing. All kinds of fruit juices (Noah's) and water. One dessert special and ice cream bar (pistachio, hazelnut ice cream and mango and berry sorbet, hazelnut was to die for). Two types of rolls (pulled pork with pineapple and chicken banh mi). 4 types of salad (more of a miss). Various canapes came out as well (charcoal bun beef brisket, some sort of toasted wrap, blue cheese and onion tartlets).

    • +3

      A closeup of the dessert.
It appeared to be a jelly of chopped apples topped with fresh whipped cream and apple puree. The "spoon" was actually made out of white chocolate.

    • Thank you very much OP.

Both speakers were excellent. Fully agree that 2nd speaker was amazing. What great courage for her to overcome adversity. Really admire for her resilience. Many attendees - myself included - stood up & applauded when she finished.
